TODAY'S READINGS First Reading -- I will lead the people to brooks of water, on a level road, so that none shall stumble (Jeremiah 31:7-9). Psalm -- The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy (Psalm 126). Second Reading -- It was not Christ who glorified himself, but rather the one who said to him: You are my son: this day I have begotten you (Hebrews 5:1-6). Gospel -- Immediately the blind man received his sight and followed Jesus on the way (Mark 10:46-52).

Today's readings begin with a joyous reunion of the blind, the lame, and those who departed in tears. All are consoled and guid-ed. The psalm celebrates the return of captives, filled with laughter, their lives transformed from weeping and sorrow to rejoicing. The reading from Hebrews reflects upon the Old

Testament priesthood and the Jerusalem Temple, and con-trasts it with the priesthood of Christ. The priest's glory comes from being, like all of us, a child of God. In the Gospel a blind man, crying out to Jesus, is rebuked, told to be quiet. Nevertheless he persists. Jesus calls to him, and his request is simple and straightforward: "I want to see." Jesus recognizes his faith, returns his sight, and sends him on his way. His way, it turns out, is to follow Jesus. The blind, the lame, the sorrowing, captives, and priests who, like us, are weak--are not successful by worldly measure. Yet they are the ones whom God seeks. (Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.)

THE GOD’S WORDS THE HOPE AND PROMISE OF REDEMPTION The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord's kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God's love and care for us. "Those that sow in tears / shall reap re-joicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves" (Psalm 126:5-6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first representative body of many Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near today's Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were Carthusian monks who refused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution was particularly vile, since the con-demned were hanged and their living bodies quartered to be displayed around London as a horrific warning. Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women practices con-templative prayer and "spiritual hospitality" in the Benedictine tradition. Oddly, the community is French in origin; it was expelled from France a century ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life. England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the communi-ty in. In gratitude to their new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In the public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350 martyrs. 28 tháng 10— Chuyến Xe Cuộc Ðời Cách đây hơn một trăm năm, khi đường sắt vừa mới được phát minh, nhu cầu đi lại mỗi lúc một bành trướng, một văn sĩ nọ, trong quyển lịch sử của xe lửa và đường sắt, đã ghi ra một số chỉ dẫn cho hành khách. Trong một chương có tựa đề "Những lời khuyên trước khi lên đường", ông đã đưa ra vài căn dặn như sau: "Trước khi bắt đầu cuộc hành trình, hành khách nên quyết định: mình sẽ đi đâu, sẽ lên chuyến xe lửa nào và ở đâu, tại nơi nào sẽ đổi tàu...". Trong một đoạn khác, ông nhắc nhủ hành khách như sau: "Khuyên quý khách mang theo hành lý càng ít bao nhiêu càng tốt... Riêng với các bà, các cô, không được phép mang quá ba hành lý và năm gói nhỏ". Những lời khuyên trên đây xem chừng như không có chút giá trị nào đối với hệ thống đường sắt hiện tại ở Việt Nam. Chen chúc nhau để có được một chỗ ngồi thích hợp, đã là quá lắm rồi, còn chỗ đâu để xác định số hành lý phải mang theo. Nhưng dù thanh thản trong một con tàu đầy tiện nghi, hay chen chúc nhau trong một wagon chật hẹp bẩn thỉu, mỗi khi bước vào xe lửa, ai trong chúng ta cũng được mời gọi để tưởng nghĩ đến chuyến đi của cuộc đời... Ðời cũng là một chuyến đi. Bước lên chiếc xe lửa của cuộc đời, ai trong chúng ta cũng được mời gọi để chuẩn bị cuộc hành trình bằng một số câu hỏi cơ bản: tôi sẽ đi về đâu? Tôi phải mang những gì cần thiết cho cuộc hành trình? Trên một số tuyến đường liên tỉnh tại Phi Luật Tân, thỉnh thoảng hành khách có thể đọc được một bảng hiệu có thể làm cho họ phải giật mình suy nghĩ: có thể đây là chuyến đi cuối cùng của bạn. Thật ra, ít có ai khi lên đường, lại có ý nghĩ ấy. Có lẽ người ta nghĩ đến công việc, nghĩ đến gia đình, nghĩ đến những thú vui đang chờ đợi hơn là phải dừng lại với ý nghĩ của một cái chết bất ngờ. Thái độ khôn ngoan nhất mà Chúa Giêsu thường lặp lại trong Tin Mừng của Ngài: đó là "Các con hãy tỉnh thức, vì các con không biết ngày nào, giờ nào". Con người sinh ra để chết. Nói như thế không hẳn là một phát biểu bi quan về cuộc đời, mà đúng hơn là một cái nhìn trong suốt về hướng đi của cuộc đời. Giá như ai trong chúng ta cũng nghĩ rằng: công việc ta đang làm trong giây phút này có thể là công việc cuối cùng trong cuộc đời, thì có lẽ mọi việc đều có một ý nghĩa và một mục đích khác hẳn. LA ESPERANZA Y PROMESA DE REDENCIÓN El profeta Jeremías anuncia el fin del exilio en Babilonia. Describe cómo los débiles y los tristes ahora regresarán con alegría. Éste es el pueblo dispersado de Dios: los cie-gos y cojos; preñadas y paridas. Serán guiados por un camino llano para que nadie tropiece. La bondad y miseri-cordia del Señor están con este pueblo débil y deshecho. Aquí y en el Salmo 126 (125) encontramos imágenes poéticas extremadamente hermosas del amor y cuidado que Dios tiene por nosotros. "Los que sembraban con lágri-mas, / cosechan entre cantares. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En México y otros países latinoamericanos se están preparando para celebrar el Día de Todos los Santos (1o de noviembre) y el Día de los Fieles Difuntos (2 de noviembre). Estas dos fiestas cristianas fueron mezcladas con antiguos ritos y devociones mesoamericanas. Ellas enfatizan que la muerte es parte normal del ciclo de la vida y que los difuntos no se olvidan de sus seres queridos. Es-ta es la base de la devoción católica a los santos: Dios es Dios de los vivos y no de los muertos (Mateo 22:32); por eso los muertos siguen vivos en una nueva dimensión. En estos días, las familias pasan tiempo en los cementeri-os, visitando las tumbas de sus parientes y amistades, la-vando las lápidas, poniendo arreglos de zempasuchil y en-cendiendo veladoras. En casa, muchos latinos construyen y adornan altarcitos dedicándolos a las almas de sus seres queridos que han muerto. En los altares se encuentran papel picado, fotos de los difuntos, artículos religiosos, comida, bebida, cigarritos y otras cosas que los ya muertos disfrutaban durante sus vidas. Esta misa es especialmente para todos los que han fallecido sin importar cuantos años tienen de haber muerto es un día que la Iglesia junto con los familiares los recuerda y oramos juntos ( asistir a misa y ofrecerla por su eterno descanso)

St. Barbara Catholic School Kindergarten and 1st Grade students visited Tanaka Farms. They were treated to hay rides to tour the farm, got up close with goats at the petting zoo, and were even allowed to pick their very own pumpkin and vegetables, including radishes, green onions, and turnips. The fall harvest is a time to celebrate the blessings which God provides for His children. And, it is a time to remember, that as parents, educators, and cate-chists, we are planting the seeds of faith in our young Catholics, with hopes for a bountiful harvest.

commitment of accepting certain religious and

spiritual responsibilities for the child by both

parents and godparents. The role of the parish

staff is to help assist you in making these commit-
