Prayer of the Faithful *+*+*+*

We have been baptized in water and the Spirit. As sons and daughters of God, then, let us bring to God our prayers for the needs of the world. For God's holy Church, carrying forth the word from God’s mouth and commissioned to see people of every nation and baptize them in the name of the Trinity, let us pray to the Lord.

For nations to share their life-giving water supplies with all who need them, rather than hoarding them or fighting over them, let us pray to the Lord. For those who work with adults and children preparing for baptism, and for those who minister to par-ents preparing for the baptism of their infants, let us pray to the Lord. For students resuming their studies after the Christmas holidays, whether at home or on campus, that they may pursue their studies with renewed energy, let us pray to the Lord. For all who have been baptized in the past year, that they may con-tinue to grow in faith and in the grace of their baptism, let us pray to the Lord. For all those who are sick, for all who suffer from COVID-19, and for all who have died, let us pray to the Lord. For all the prayers that we hold in the silence of our hearts; for all our intentions spoken and unspoken, let us pray to the Lord.

FEAST OF FAITH The Sign of the Cross

At the beginning of our prayer, we make the sign of the cross together. This sign, simple and powerful, operates on many levels. We trace the sign of the cross over our bodies, reminding our-selves that the cross of Christ has become our source of resurrection, life, and grace. With this

sign, we also profess our faith in the Trinity: the presider does not say “in the names,” but “in the name of the Fa-ther, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”—three per-sons, one God. The sign of the cross is also a baptismal reminder, for every sign of the cross echoes the words spoken over us at our baptism, which marked our entry into the saving mystery of Christ. This many-layered sign is also our primary sign of blessing: the cross is traced over people, places, and things upon which we ask God to impart divine benediction. In blessing ourselves with the sign of the cross at the beginning of Mass, we acknowledge the mystery that has gathered us together: that Christ, the crucified and ris-en One, is living, and that we are members of his Body. Các thiếu nữ có tên thánh là Lucia chắc phải thất vọng khi muốn tìm hiểu về vị thánh quan thầy của mình. Các

sách cổ viết dài dòng nhưng rất ít chi tiết liên hệ đến truyền thuyết. Các sách mới đây cũng dài dòng dẫn chứng

một sự kiện là những truyền thuyết này không có trong lịch sử. Chỉ có một chi tiết về Thánh Lucia còn sót lại

đến ngày nay, đó là người cầu hôn với thánh nữ vì bị từ chối nên đã tố cáo ngài là Kitô Hữu, do đó ngài bị xử

tử ở Syracuse thuộc Sicily vào năm 304. Nhưng cũng đúng là tên của thánh nữ đã được nhắc đến trong lời cầu

nguyện Rước Lễ Lần Ðầu, có những địa danh và một bài dân ca mang tên thánh nữ, và qua bao thế kỷ, hàng

chục ngàn thiếu nữ đã hãnh diện chọn ngài làm quan thầy.

Cũng dễ để hiểu những khó khăn của một thiếu nữ Kitô Giáo khi phải chiến đấu trong một xã hội trần tục như

ở Sicily vào năm 300. Cũng tương tự như xã hội ngày nay, nhiều thói tục của xã hội đã ngăn cản chúng ta sống

xứng đáng là người theo Ðức Kitô.

Các bạn bè của Lucia có lẽ cũng ngạc nhiên về Ðấng mà Lucia yêu quý, đó là một người đi rao giảng khắp nơi,

sống trong một dân tộc nô lệ và đã bị tiêu diệt cách đó 200 năm. Người từng là một người thợ mộc, từng bị

chính dân của Người kết án và chết trên thập giá. Với tất cả tâm hồn, Lucia tin tưởng rằng chính Người đã

sống lại từ cõi chết. Thiên Chúa đã minh chứng tất cả những gì Người nói và hành động. Ðể làm chứng cho

đức tin ấy, thánh nữ đã thề giữ mình đồng trinh.

Thật là một điều khôi hài đối với các bạn ngoại giáo của thánh nữ! Giữ mình trong trắng trước khi thành hôn là

một lý tưởng cổ hủ của người Rôma, ít người còn giữ nhưng không ai kết án lý tưởng ấy. Tuy nhiên, ngay cả

cô ta không muốn kết hôn thì điều đó thật quá đáng. Chắc cô ta phải có điều gì xấu xa cần giấu diếm, như

miệng lưỡi thế gian thường đồn đãi.

Chắc chắn Thánh Lucia đã nghe biết về nhân đức anh hùng của

các vị đồng trinh tử đạo. Ngài muốn trung thành với tấm gương

của các đấng ấy, cũng như theo gương của người thợ mộc, là

Người mà ngài tin là Con Thiên Chúa.

Nếu bạn chọn Thánh Lucia làm quan thầy thì đừng thất vọng.

Vị quan thầy của bạn thực sự là một nữ anh thư, hơn hẳn mọi

người, là một hứng khởi vô tận cho bạn và cho mọi Kitô Hữu.

Sự can đảm sống luân lý của người thiếu nữ Sicilian tử đạo ấy

đã tỏa sáng như để soi dẫn giới trẻ ngày nay cũng như giới trẻ
