LITERARY GREATS VISIT UCSB The8thannualLuisLealAwardforDistinctioninChicano/LatinoLiteraturewasawardedonOctober28,2010toJimmySantiagoBaca.NamedafterProfessorLuisLealwhodiedinearly2010attheageof102andwhowasoneofthepioneersinthestudyofChicanoliterature,theawardhonorsawriteronChicano/Latinosubjectswhohasachievednationalandinternationalacclaimthroughasubstantialbodyofwork.JimmySantiagoBaca,anativeofNewMexico,isapowerfulandcourageousvoiceasapoet,shortstorywriter,memoirwriter,essayist,andnovelist.HissubjectsarehispeopleofNewMexico,themestizos,Indo‐HispanosofthatregionwhotracetheirancestrytothatlandforseveralgenerationsbutwhoareasnewasthoseMexicanimmigrantswhocrossedthebordertoday.BacawritesfromhisownexperiencesasasurvivoramongstapeopletoolongmarginalizedinAmericansociety.Hisisavoicethatweverymuchneedandappreciate.Fromimpoverishedconditionstoanorphanagetothepenitentiary,Bacasurvivedandlearnedthepowerof

literacyandofwritingandhasbecomeoneofthemajorpoetsandwritersintheUnitedStates.Bacahaswrittenmorethanelevenvolumesofpoetry.In2001hepublishedhisgrippingandpowerfulautobiographyAPlacetoStand.In2009,hepublishedhisfirstnovelAGlassofWater.Forhisoutstandingwork,BacahaswonnumerousprestigiousawardsandhonorsincludingaNationalEndowmentfortheArtsLiteraryFellowship,theAmericanBookAwardforPoetry,theWallaceStevensEndowedChairatYaleUniversity,andtheInternationalHispanicHeritageAward.Devotednotonlytohiswriting,BacaestablishedCedarTree,Inc.,anonprofitfoundationthatconducts

Herslippersshufflingacrossthestage,SandraCisnerosapproachedthepodiuminbrightbluepajamassportingmulti‐coloredpolkadots.Hundredsofstudentsaccompaniedbycommunitymembers(onestatingintheQ&AsessionthathetraveledfromLosAngeles),staff,andfacultyfilledCampbellHallTuesdayevening,November17,2010tohear“WritingintheTimeofMexiphobia,orPackingYourPapers.”Cisnerosdidn’tfocusheavilyonimmigrationthemes,pollingtheaudience,identifyingveryyoungmembers,andcontinuingwitha“G‐Rated”versionofherthoughts(tothepartialdisappointmentofsomewhocametohearCisnerosonsomethingrelatedtoher199Xcollectionofpoetry,LooseWomen).Herless‐than‐formalattirereflectedthetitleof

Cisneros’sforthcomingbook,WritinginYourPajamas.Sheintroducedselectedreadingsfromthework‐in‐progresswithcommentsonhercommunityservicework,encouragingeveryonetopickupapenandpaperandengagetheartofliterature.‘Writethefirstdraftasifyouaretalkingtoyourbestfriend.Completelyhonest.

Likeyouwerecomfortabletalkingtothemevenwearingpajamas.’TheaudiencewasenthralledasCisnerosreadashortstoryfollowingthenarratorthroughhercommunityinsearchofbothalostcatandthecompanyofherrecentlydeceasedmother.TheaudiencewasalsotreatedtoafictionalwindowintothelifeofFridaKahloandherrelationshipwithDiegoRivera.Cisneros’svoicewasmelodicandinviting

MESSAGEFROMTHECHAIRComodeciamipapá,“parecesdiscorayado,”wheneverIfoundmyselfsooverlyexcitedaboutaprojectthatIcouldnotrestrainmyselffromtalkingaboutit.Asweendanotherquarter,myChair’smessagecontinuestobethesame—thisisagreatdepartmentwithextraordinaryaccomplish‐mentsandeveryquarterwekeeprakinginnewandexcitingdevelopments.ForthisquarterIwanttohighlighttheintellectualandresearchactivitiesofourfacultyandgraduatestudents.Firstofall,IwouldliketothankProfessorMarioGarciaandouracegraduateassistantsJessicaLopezLymanandEddyAlvarezwhoworkedasateamtoorganizeanoutstandingcolloquiumseries.The“colloquiumteam,”astheycallthemselves,coordinatedadistinguishedpanelofspeakersthatincludedhistorians,communityactivists,politicalscientists,creativewriters,membersofourfaculty,andgraduatestudents.EveryWednesdaywetooka“SipofKnowledge”(yomasdiria,unjarrotedesabiduría)inthecompanyoffaculty,graduatestudentsfromacrosscampus,staff,aswellasvisitorsfromoutsidethecampus.

Therearetwopresent‐ationsinparticularIwouldliketohighlight.ThefirstisthepresentationbyJimmySantiagoBaca,thisyear’srecipientoftheannualLuisLealAwardforDistinctioninChicano/LatinoLiterature.ProfessorMarioGarciachairstheawardcommittee.InadditiontoSr.Baca’spláticaatthedepartment’scolloquium,hespoketoanaudienceofover600students,faculty,staff,andcommunitymembers.Itwasawonderfulexperiencetowitnessyoungpeople’sinspirationfueledtousetheirownlivesandcommunitiestobecomethenextgenerationofwriters.ThesecondpresentationwasbySandraCisneros,therenownedChicanawriterwhoalsospoketoanaudienceofcloseto800urgingyoungpeopleto“writelikeyouareinyourpajamas,atyourkitchentable,talkingtoyourbestfriendandthenedit,edit,andtheneditagain.”EarlierinthedayofMsCisneros’presentation,agroupofourgraduatestudentspresentedatthedepartment’scolloquiumseriesexploringthesignificanceofMsCisneros’work.Thedepartmentisalsolinkingitsintellectualactivitiestoourlocalcommunity.Onherfirstdayoncampus,MsCisnerosattendedadinnerwithsupportersofourdepart‐ment.TheeventwasorganizedbyProfessorMariaHerrera‐Sobek,AssociateViceChancellorofDiversity,EquityandAcademicPolicy,andbyMichaelMiller,DirectorofDevelopment.InattendancewerePaulaLopez,localnewsanchorandreporter,HonorableFrankOchoaJr.,SantaBarbaraSuperiorCourtJudge,AlPizano,Chairofthe

EDITORIALBYGERARDOALDANA,NewsletterCo‐editorBUTWHY2012?JoséArguelleswasaChicanostudyingArtHistoryattheUniversityofChicagointheearly1970s.HefocusedhisstudiesonMesoamericanartataboutthetimethatthedeciphermentoftheMayanhieroglyphicscriptentereditsearlyproductivephase.Arguelleswasalsoaculturalcritic,raisingethicalconcernsaboutmodernscienceandtechnology.WithinMayanastronomy,itappearshefoundanopportunitytoresolvehismodernconcernsandfeedhisancientinterests.Arguelles’sinterpretationsofMayanastronomyinTheMayanFactor—beforethedeciphermenthadcometofruition—setthebasisformodern2012“prophecies.”MytakeonwhatArguellesconfronted,andontheinterpretationofancientMesoamericaingeneral,isthatweareupagainstthecoreoftheSubalternStudiesprojectdescribedbyGayatriSpivakin“CantheSubalternSpeak?”IrealizeofcoursethatancientMayarulersweresubordinatetonoone(exceptoccasionallytoeachotheraslocalpoliticswouldhaveit),sothat“subaltern”isnottechnicallytherightterm.Butinmyestimationtheroleofrepresentationinthetwo

casesstemfromsimilarcomplications.Thatis,eventhoughClassicMayarulerswereabletoproducerepresentationsofthemselvesandoftheirintereststoClassicMayanpopulations,noneoftheserepresentationsisavailabletomodernculture—allfirstmustbetranslatedthroughnewrepresentationsbymoderninterpreters.Despiteappearances,ClassicMayahegemonscannotspeakforthemselves.Beyondtheimmediateproblemsofanancientlanguageandcomplexandunfamiliarartisticimagery,anythingweseetodaypassesthroughhundredsofyearsofreligious,political,economic,andracialcontestation.“Pagans,”“primitive,”“humansacrifice,”“stone‐agetechnology,”“indios.”Allofthesetermsgeneratebarrierstoaccessingindigenousexperiences—barriersthatarewoventhroughoutmoderncommonsense(s).Wedon’tseetheancientMayathrough2012propheciesormodernscholarship—weseetherepresentationsthattherepresentor/representativeprovidestous.Whenitcomestoacademicor2012representations,theonesthatsellaretheonesavailabletothepublic.Inordertogetatsomethingclosetoanaccuraterepresentationofancient

Mayanculture,then,wehavetogetpastthephilosophicalbarriersidentifiedbyJacquesDerrida(andfurtherarticulatedbySpivak),thesocio‐politicalsubordinationofMesoamericanandindigenouspeopleoverthelast500years,andtheconsumermarket’sappetiteforesotera.Sowhy2012?Mythoughtsarethatitrepresentsapointofarticulationbetweenthetraditionalscholarshipandthepopularizations.TraditionalscholarshiphasmadeapointofemphasizingtheaccuracyofMayanastronomyasamarkerofitsculturalappraisal.Popul‐arizershavecapitalizedonthispurportedaccuracytoextendtherepresentationtoincludethefantasticandtheprofitable.Throwinaconvenientdeadlineandyouhaveaperfectstorm,disastrousforrepresentationsoftheClassicMaya.SowhilemyarticleontheMayacalendarcorrelationproblem(CalendarsandYearsII,OxbowBooks,2010)wasinnowaydirectlymotivatedbytheissuesaround2012—anddoesn’taddressthemexplicitly—itdoesresultinthefinaldismissalthatanysuch“prophecy”hasoriginsinMayanculture.Yetwhilethearticleputsanailinthecoffinof2012interpretations,myhopeisthatitwillmotivateacorrectivemeasureonthescholarshiponMaya
