To Our St. Felicitas Family, As you know, a few weeks ago, we had a disturbing and sad event happen in our community. We had someone walk down the driveway of our school and shoot at our beautiful and iconic St. Felicitas Statue at the front of the school in broad daylight on Saturday afternoon. It’s important for the community to know that we continue to be in contact with the police and the District Attorney and will continue to update you as we know more. On Monday, June 26th, the suspect had his preliminary hearing at the Hayward Hall of Justice, to decide if he would remain in custody. I was asked to testify by the DA in order to inform the judge about our community, the statue, location, and our regular weekend activities. After I testified the two police officers who arrested him testified. As I waited outside the courtroom I was able to personally thank the officers on behalf of the community for getting to the scene so quickly and protecting our neighborhood from harm. As a result of the hearing, the suspect was kept in custody and will be “Held to answer” for 5 criminal charges, 4 felony and 1 misdemeanor. This means he will not be released. He will go through his arraignment (on July 12th) and trial and then be sentenced to a certain amount of jail time. As Fr. Tom and I have continued to discuss and pray over this situation we can't help but feel that there was some divine intervention at play. Divine intervention that our beloved statue was minimally damaged in such a horrible event. Divine intervention that not one person was injured. And divine intervention that they caught the suspect within moments just around the block. Even in the fear of such a horrific event, we can't help but feel God's love and protection. We are so very blessed that no one was hurt. But it is an extremely important reminder to also remain diligent with our security measures as a community, particularly on the weekend.

So here are some reminders for all of us to help maintain security on the weekends: ♦ When using any buildings assign people to be greeters at all entrances. ♦ Never ever prop doors open and leave them unattended. ♦ All buildings when in use should be locked and doors closed as best we can. ♦ Children should be attended and supervised closely wherever they are and at all times. ♦ During CYO practice - keep players and siblings in the gym during practice, don't allow children free time

near the statue on their own ♦ Please inform the parish or school office immediately if you see any suspicious behavior on or near

campus

Finally, let us pray for the mentally disturbed individual who was responsible for this awful event and offer prayers of thanksgiving that we are all okay. Being at the courthouse allowed me to meet the suspect and also gave me the opportunity to connect with the suspect’s family who has ties to our St. Felicitas community. I offered my condolences on behalf of the community because they couldn’t be more heart broken. Please continue to pray for the suspect and his family that he gets the much needed mental health help that he needs and that God continues to be with the family to help heal their wounds and pain. We live in a difficult world and even our wonderful community is not immune to that. Please know that all of us are safe and will continue to be safe especially when we all take extra precautions and look out for one another. This is a wonderful time filled with fun when the children are taught important Bible stories. Thanks to our generous parishioners we are able to do this ministry at no cost to the parents. Each day the children are given a snack. If you would like to help with the snacks here is our wish list:

Chúa Nhật 14 Quanh Năm Gánh nặng và gánh nhẹ

"Hãy đến cùng tôi", "Hãy mang ách của tôi", "Hãy học với tôi". Ai là người được Ngài mời gọi? Tất cả những ai đang vất vả và mang gánh nặng nề. Gánh nặng của cuộc sống, gánh nặng của bản thân, gánh nặng của nỗi đau và trách nhiệm, gánh nặng của những lề luật phải tuân giữ. Mọi người đang oằn vai dưới gánh nặng đủ loại đều được mời đến với Ðức Giêsu, để tìm lại được sự an nghỉ cho tâm hồn. Chính Ngài làm cho ta được an nghỉ (c.28). Sự an nghỉ đích thực có được khi con người sống an hòa với Thiên Chúa và tha nhân, khi con người biết mình được Thiên Chúa yêu ngay giữa những đau khổ và nước mắt, khi con người xác tín là mình đang làm đúng ý Chúa dù phải chịu nhiều thiệt thòi mất mát. Như thế sự an nghỉ Ðức Giêsu hứa ban không phải là thứ an nghỉ giả tạo, hay hèn nhát né tránh. Ðức Giêsu không ngần ngại nói đến "ách" của Ngài mà kẻ đến với Ngài phải mang. Ngài không giấu chúng ta về những đòi hỏi nghiêm túc của Ngài, về con đường hẹp mà Ngài đã đi, về thánh giá mà chúng ta phải vác. Tóm lại, Ngài không đưa chúng ta rơi vào ảo tưởng về một thứ an nghỉ dễ dàng, không cần nỗ lực chinh phục. Nhưng Ngài cho thấy ách của Ngài thì êm ái, gánh của Ngài nhẹ nhàng. Eâm ái và nhẹ nhàng là do lòng yêu mến. Chính lòng yêu mến làm cho mọi sự trở nên êm nhẹ. Thánh Âu Tinh đã nói một câu nổi tiếng: "Ubi amatur, non laboratur; aut si laboratur, labor amatur." Chỗ nào có lòng yêu mến, thì không có sự vất vả nhọc nhằn; mà giả như có vất vả nhọc nhằn, thì người ta cũng thích cái vất vả nhọc nhằn đó. Ðức Giêsu mời chúng ta đến học với Ngài. Ngài vừa là trường học, vừa là Thầy giáo, vừa là bài học. Bài học nằm nơi chính con người Ngài: "Vì tôi có trái tim hiền hậu và khiêm nhu" (c.29). Nếu chúng ta đến học với Ngài, chúng ta phải học bài của trái tim. Chúng ta được uốn nắn để có trái tim như Ngài, để rồi tìm thấy sự an nghỉ mà bạo động và kiêu căng không thể ban được.

Có khi nào bạn thấy theo đạo là một gánh nặng không? Bạn thấy giữ đạo là việc nặng nề ở điểm nào? Có cách nào làm cho nó nhẹ nhàng hơn không?

DESDE EL RÍO HASTA LOS ÚLTIMOS RINCONES DE LA TIERRA

¡Cómo anhelamos la paz en el mundo! Pareciera que constantemente estamos rodeados de noticias de muerte y destrucción, ya sea en nuestro país o en el extranjero. Las escuchamos y las lamentamos, tratamos de dar refugio a quienes escapan de la guerra y el crimen en sus países. Oramos por ellos y por nosotros, que el miedo no nos invada y nos haga hacer cosas necias o que nos aprovechemos de personas inocentes. Dios "anunciará la paz a las naciones" (Zacarías 9:10). Podemos confiar en esta promesa de paz, si nos convertimos en personas pacificas nosotros mismos y no somos vengativos o dejamos que la ira profunda nos domine. "Ustedes no viven conforme al desorden egoísta del hombre, sino conforme al Espíritu" (Romanos 8:9).

VEN A MÍ

Una de las palabras de más consuelo en los evangelios están en la lectura de hoy. "Vengan a mí, todos los que están fatigados y agobiados por la carga, y yo los aliviaré, . . . porque mi yugo es suave y mi carga ligera" (Mateo 11:28, 30). Algunas veces cargamos lo que parece ser una carga difícil, cargamos nuestra cruz. Pero quizá estemos cargando la cruz equivocada. Nuestra cruz, se nos promete, será suave y ligera. Pareciera que esto no es verdad cuando sufrimos la pérdida de un ser querido, quedamos desempleados, perdemos la casa o nuestro sustento. Pero si volteamos hacia Jesús, siempre encontraremos el consuelo y amor bondadoso del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Los niños voltean hacia nosotros los adultos por consuelo y apoyo, pues Dios ha "escondido estas cosas a los sabios y entendidos, y las ha revelado a la gente sencilla" (Mateo 11:25). Podemos aprender de los niños acerca de nuestra dependencia en Dios. Y Jesús nos dice "tomen mi yugo sobre ustedes y aprendan de mí, que soy manso y humilde de corazón" (Mateo 11:29). Una vez más, la humildad del Señor no revela arrogancia ni una falsa negación de su poder, sino que revela un reconocimiento de su amor por nosotros.
