Gospel ReflectionQuestions

• Think of what it meansto live as a child of light.

• Think of times in yourlife of light and times of darkness.

• Think of what God hasdone for you that sur-prised you.

Some Questions forFamilies & Children• Think of why Jesuscured the blind man.

• Think of what reasonJesus gave for the manbeing blind.

March 31st - Fourth Sunday in LentJohn 9:1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38 As Jesus passed by he saw a man blind from birth. He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes, and said to him, "Go wash in the Pool of Siloam" —which means Sent—.

So he went and washed, and came back able to see.His neighbors and those who had seen him earlier as a beggar said, "Isn't this the one who used to sit and beg?"

Some said, "It is, "but others said, "No, he just looks like him."

He said, "I am."They brought the one who was once blind to the Pharisees. Now Jesus had made clay and opened his eyes on a sabbath. So then the Pharisees also asked him how he was able to see.He said to them,"He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see."

So some of the Pharisees said,"This man is not from God,because he does not keep the sabbath."

But others said,"How can a sinful man do such signs?"

And there was a division among them.So they said to the blind man again, "What do you have to say about him, since he opened your eyes?"

He said, "He is a prophet."They answered and said to him,"You were born totally in sin,and are you trying to teach us?"

Then they threw him out. When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out,he found him and said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"

He answered and said, "Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?"

E-mail Father Tony: [email protected]

On any number of occasions, young people have told methat they feel bad when they take for granted the sacrifices

that their parents are making in putting them through school. Needless tosay, I am so impressed when I hear someone confessing the lack ofappreciation for the efforts that are being made on their behalf. I am notsure if I would have had that level of awareness or maturity in myhigh-school years. While I would hate to admit it, I think I just presumedthat parents make sacrifices of money and time for their kids - it’s part oftheir job!

But here I am as an adult, and I wonder if I still take for granted all that hasbeen done on my behalf to bring me to this point in my life. God hasplaced some extraordinary people in my path - living saints - who not onlyhave modeled for me the true meaning of discipleship, but have offered meencouragement, advice, challenge and forgiveness. Have I made the best ofall that has been offered to me? Or have I settled for mediocrity out oflaziness or indifference?

In today’s gospel, Jesus offers a parable about growth. The story is of a figtree that is not producing fruit. It is taking up space, “exhausting the soil.”I wonder how many times that judgment could have been made about mein my educational career - just taking up space! In the parable, the gardenerpleads on behalf of the fruitless tree, promising all the extra efforts thatwill be made so that the tree will bear fruit in the future. Again, I think ofall the times the Father has labored to offer me opportunities andsecond-chances to “get it right.” I think of the many promises I have madeto the Lord to make a greater effort to change this or attend to that otherthing in my life. I suppose the bottom-line question is this: have I taken theFather’s mercy for granted?

I have heard it said that God loves me so much that He is willing to meetme where I am at. But, He loves me even more in that He doesn’t want toleave me there. The mercy of God is not only experienced as a forgivenessof past sins, most especially the sins of omission where I failed to producenourishing fruit for others; that mercy of God is also experienced as Hisrenewed commitment to offer me new opportunities to change, to grow, toflourish. Were I to take the time to reflect on all the many people who havemade sacrifices to bring me to this point in my life, the Father wouldrespond by saying, “Wait - you ain’t seen nothing yet!” So today, I openmy heart to the renewal that God is offering me through even greaterefforts He is making for my personal growth. May I open my heart morediligently to those opportunities for growth that lie ahead in my future.

Taking mercy for granted

The “Right to Privacy”I find it very interesting (andencouraging) that both countyexecutives Laura Curran ofNassau and Steve Bellone of

Suffolk have fought for opt-outclauses in any future statelegislation concerning the

legalization of marijuana. Forsome, “recreational pot” couldbe seen as a privacy issue; whatpeople do behind closed doors is

their business. However, thequestions are being rightfully

raised about how therecreational use of marijuana

might have public consequencessuch as the effect on childrenand adolescents, on traffic

safety, and on any other numberof public concerns that need to

be studied.

Would that the same logic havebeen applied to state legislationconcerning abortion! As long as

we see abortion as a privacyissue and ignore the very

obvious public consequences ofeliminating the rights of the

unborn, we will soon beapplying those same “right to

privacy” privileges to physicianassisted suicide. Even the mostprivate decisions have public

consequences.

It is never a waste of time to bea voice for the voiceless. I urgeyou to continue to let your voicebe heard by registering with the

Lenten Programs at Saint BrigidUsing the Scriptures for Daily Prayer

Perhaps you may have read Bishop Barres’ Lenten letter that wasprinted a few weeks ago. He calls all of us this Lent to be engagedin a prayerful reading of the scripture so that the word of God canbe that place of dialogue between me and the Lord who labors tolove me so. Each day in Lent, This practice of reading thescripture (Lectio Divina) offers us a simple method to be present tothe Lord.Throughout the season of Lent, I will put on the parish website acitation from the daily scripture along with a guided meditation tohelp us reflect upon the word of God.

I also direct your attention to a blog created by some of the men of our parish entitled,“Fishers of Men.” Log onto https://outcasts4christ.blogspot.com/

Parish Lenten Mission: April 6 - 11: “Beginning Today”Beginning Today is a four-night Lenten mission - an opportunity to listen, to pray, to reflect

and to be invited to recommit ourselves to the gift of God’s savinglove for us. Our parish Lenten retreat this year will be given by FatherKevin MacDonald, a Redemptorist priest from Woburn,Massachusetts, about ten miles north of Boston. He entered theRedemptorist missionary order after attending Boston College andplaying seven years of professional baseball with the PittsburghPirates organization and overseas in Holland and Australia. He is amember of the Boston College Hall of Fame. Ordained in 1991, he has worked as a parish priest in Dominica, NewYork, Boston, St. Lucia, and the Virgin Islands. He is currentlyassigned to the Redemptorist Community in New Smyrna Beach, Fl.He will be preaching at all of our Masses on the weekend of April 5 -

6, and certainly, from his charismatic energy, you will not want to miss this event in ourparish! What a great opportunity for us to invite those who feel distant from the Church oreven stuck in their relationship with the Lord.

“God Calling”: Bethany Retreat Morning for Women“God Calling” is a morning of prayer which will take place in St Anthony’s Hall at 9:00 am

Domingo Tercero De Cuaresma. Ciclo C.“Conversión Es: Dar Frutos De Vida

Third Sunday of Lent C, 2019La vie sauvée par Jésus.

Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Each of us meets people like this every day.

- Pope Francis

Dear Friends:

During the special Lenten season, please allow me to share a special request with you. If you have never years, please

consider making this the year that you join with me and other members of our Parish family to make a donation to the 2019 Appeal.

As you may already be aware, 100% of all the money raised by this fund is restricted to the ministries and programs that serve more than 600,000 people each year, and our parish shares in the money raised to use for our own local needs.

These programs include services to people in need; affordable housing for senior citizens; people with disabilities and our veterans; respect life initiatives; and formation of our priests, deacons, lay leaders, and young people. These are just a few of the programs that help make our church and this Island a vibrant and wonderful place to live.

But to help ensure that we can always serve those who come to us for aid, support and spiritual guidance, we need help from you!

If 100 of our parishioners who have not supported us in the recent past made a $25 contribution this year think about how many more people we could help! If that amount is more than you can manage, consider $5 or $10. Every gift counts and makes a difference in the lives of others! THANK YOU!!
