TRIRD SUNDAY OF LENT (Year C) - March 20, 2022 Today’s Gospel Reflection: Luke 13:1-9

HOLY GROUND Moses met God in a most astounding way in the bush that was burning but not consumed by fire. Mo-ses clearly had a powerful encounter with the Lord. He even felt bold enough to ask God’s name, some-thing unheard of among his people at the time—God’s name was unspeakable. Moses stood on holy ground. Do we not also stand on holy ground? As people who are created in God’s image and drawn to Christ through the waters of Baptism, we have been filled with God’s grace and goodness. The ground of our lives is holy. Sunday, March 20, 2022 Dear parishioners and friends, Russia’s war in Ukraine enters a fourth week. Pope Francis condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine last Sunday, calling it a “massacre.” “The only thing to do is stop this unacceptable armed aggression before it reduces cities into cemeteries,” Francis told a crowd of the faithful gathered at St. Peter’s Square. “In the name of God, I ask you: stop this massacre!” Pope Francis said, before asking the crowd to join him in silent prayer for an end to the war. By making this

urgent plea, the Pope no longer takes a neutral position, which the Vatican usually chooses in international relations. He pointed out the Russian leader to stop what is called “special military operation”. Russia is the one that causes this massacre. History repeats itself. The world, and especially Europe, awakens to the Russian threat. One hundred five years ago, Our Lady of Fatima appeared on May 13, 1917, only a few months after a revolution began in Russia that would spread through the whole world. Two months later, she specifically mentioned the conversion of Russia. Why did Our Lady of Fatima only mention Russia? After the abdication of Czar Nicholas II on March 15, 1917, a new beginning of an even greater movement arose, as it facilitated Vladimir Lenin’s rise to power. Lenin was a disciple of Karl Marx and was ready to introduce his own version of Marxism in Russia, beginning with a socialist revolution. His version of communism would devastate Russia for seven decades to come and would spread to many other countries throughout the world, including China and Vietnam. When Our Lady of Fatima appeared on May 13, 1917, the world was aware of the February Revolution in Russia, but not of the communist rise to power that would grip the world. Then, on July 13, 1917, she spoke to the children at Fati-ma about Russia. “To prevent [another World War], I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and the Communion of reparation on the first Saturdays. If people attend to my requests, Russia will be converted and the world will have peace. If not, she [Russia] will scatter her errors throughout the world, provoking wars and per-secutions of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, and various nations will be destroyed. In the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me; it will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world.” Yes, “a certain period of peace will be granted”, but it won’t last. The world in 1917 could have never thought of the damage the Rus-sian government and its communism could inflict upon the world. Thirty years after the Soviet Union collapsed, Russia awakens and shakes the world with a new threat that destroys lives, undermines international law, and sovereignty of states. “The good news is that the future is not set in stone and we can influence the world for the better, beginning with Our Lady’s call to, ‘penance, penance, penance!’” (Philip Kosloski, a spirituality writer for Aleteia.org) Our Lady of Fatima: Pray for us! March 25 The Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord

God enters through the back door. The Annunciation is the Feast celebrating the Lord’s incarnation in Mary’s womb, initiating a new history. It is interesting to notice that God does not send the angel to the Temple in Jerusalem, but to Galilee, a despised region, considered a haven for unbelieving pagans. Nazareth is a city that is never mentioned in the Old Testament. O Holy Virgin Mary, we ask your intercession

to make us as generous as you in accepting the will of God in our lives, especially when that will is expressed in mysterious ways. May you be our example of a generous response to what God de-sires of us.

2022 CHRISM MASS April 5 at 7:00 p.m.

Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph During Mass, Bishop Cantú will conse-crate the sacred Chrism and bless the Oil of the Sick, used in anointing of the sick;

the Oil of Catechumens, used during Baptism; and the Oil of Sacred Chrism which is the primary anointing oil. It is used in the sacraments of initiation and Holy Orders as well as special acts of dedication. The word “chrism” means “consecrated oil”.

This Mass is concelebrated by the priests of our Diocese who publicly renew their promises to serve. We will pray and offer encouragement to our bishop, our diocese's retired bishop, and our priests whose vocations are “born from an encounter of love: with Jesus, and with the People of God.” (Pope Francis).

ABSTINENCE All persons, 14 years and older, are obliged to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. Other forms of abstinence, for example abstinence from alcoholic bev-erages, television, video games, the internet, and social media, are also beneficial.

FASTING Everyone from ages 18 to 59 is obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Voluntary fasting on other weekdays of Lent, especially on Wednesdays and Fridays, is highly recommended. Fasting is understood to mean that one full meal may be eaten. Two other small meals may be eaten, but together they should not equal a full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted.

PRAYER Daily Mass, Daily Rosary, Holy Hour Weekly, Family Prayer each night, Friday Stations of the Cross.

CONFESSION Frequent Confession is generally said to be once a month and this would be a good practice to have all year along. Resolve to make a good examination of conscience.

PENANCE Our Lord told us that penance is necessary for salvation. Works of penance are a way of mortifying ourselves and growing in sanctity.

ALMSGIVING Increase your donations to the Church, give to cloistered monas-teries or convents, support the missions, support crisis pregnan-cy centers, support Christian Service Programs, help the poor.

ESPIRITUAL READING Read the Bible at least 15 minutes daily. Read a good Catholic book. Read from the lives of Saints.

ENTERTAINMENT We can drastically limit our TV viewing, give up favorite pro-grams or give up television altogether. Perhaps instead we can watch a good program as a family or religious video

SUELO SAGRADO Moisés se encontró con Dios de la manera más asombrosa en una zarza que ardía pero que el fuego no la consumía. Sin lugar a duda, Moisés tuvo un impactante encuentro con el Señor. Incluso se sintió lo sufi-cientemente valiente para preguntarle a Dios por su nombre, algo inaudito entre su pueblo en ese tiempo, no se pronunciaba el nombre de Dios. Moisés estaba en suelo sagrado. ¿Acaso nosotros no estamos tam-bién parados sobre suelo sagrado? Como personas que somos creadas a imagen de Dios y atraídas por Cris-to a través de las aguas del bautismo, somos llenados con la gracia y bondad de Dios. El suelo de nuestras vidas es sagrado. Catedral Basílica de San José Durante la Misa, nuestro Obispo Oscar Cantú consagrará el sagrado Crisma y bendecirá el Óleo de los Enfermos, utiliza-

do en la unción de los enfermos; el Óleo de los Catecúmenos, usado durante el Bautismo; y el Óleo del Crisma Sagrado que es el aceite de unción principal. Se usa en los sacramentos de ini-ciación y Órdenes Sagradas, así como en actos especiales de dedicación. La palabra “crisma” significa “aceite consagrado”. Domingo 20 de marzo de 2022 Estimados feligreses y amigos: La guerra de Rusia en Ucrania entra en su cuarta semana. El domingo pasado el Papa Francisco condenó la invasión rusa a Ucrania calificándola de “masacre”. “Lo único que se puede hacer es poner fin a la inaceptable agresión armada, antes de que reduzca las ciudades a cementerios”, dijo el Papa Francisco a una multitud de fieles reunidos en la Plaza de San Pedro. “En nombre de Dios, les pido: ¡detengan esta masacre!” dijo el Papa Francisco, antes de pedirle a la multitud que

se uniera a él en oración silenciosa por el fin de la guerra. Al hacer esta súplica urgente, el Papa ya no toma una posición neutral, que el Vaticano suele hacer en las relaciones internacionales. Señaló al líder ruso detener lo que se denomina “operación militar especial”. Rusia es la que provoca esta masacre. La historia se repite. El mundo, y especialmente Eu-ropa, despierta ante la amenaza rusa. Hace ciento cinco años, Nuestra Señora de Fátima se apareció el 13 de mayo de 1917, solo unos meses después de que comenzara una revolución en Rusia que se extendería por todo el mundo. Dos meses después, mencionó específicamen-te la conversión de Rusia. ¿Por qué Nuestra Señora de Fátima solo mencionó a Rusia? Tras la abdicación del zar Nicolás II el 15 de marzo de 1917, surgió un nuevo comienzo de un movimiento aún mayor, ya que facilitó el ascenso al poder de Vladimir Lenin. Kính thưa Quý Cụ, Quý Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em:

Cuộc chiến của Nga xâm lăng Ukraine đang bước vào tuần thứ tư. Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô hôm Chúa Nhật tuần trước đã lên án hành động này và gọi cuộc xâm lăng này là một “cuộc thảm sát”. ĐTC nói với đám đông các tín hữu qui tụ tại Quảng Trường Thánh Phêrô: “Chỉ có cách duy nhất là dừng lại hành động xâm lược vũ trang không thể chấp nhận này, trước khi nó biến các thành phố thành các

nghĩa trang.” ĐTC nhấn mạnh: “Nhân danh Thiên Chúa, tôi kêu gọi: hãy dừng cuộc thảm sát này!” Sau đó ĐTC mời mọi người cùng cầu nguyện trong thinh lặng với ngài xin cho chiến tranh mau chấm dứt. Qua lời kêu gọi khẩn cấp này, ĐTC đã không còn chọn vị thế trung lập, vị trí mà Toà Thánh Vatican thường chọn trong các quan hệ quốc tế. Ngài chỉ ra đích danh vị lãnh đạo nước Nga và kêu gọi hãy ngừng cái gọi “chiến dịch quân sự đặt biệt” của Nga. Nước Nga gây ra cuộc thảm sát diện rộng trên đất nước Ukraine. Lịch sử lập lại đấy. Cả thế giới, cách riêng là Châu Âu, đã tỉnh giấc trước mối đe doạ mới của nước Nga. Hồi tưởng lại 105 năm về trước, Đức Mẹ hiện ra tại Fatima vào ngày 13 tháng 5 năm 1917, chỉ vài tháng sau khi cuộc cách mạng bắt đầu tại nước Nga và sau đó lan ra cả thế giới. Trong lần hiện ra vào tháng Bảy, Đức Mẹ nêu đích danh nước Nga cần phải được hoán cải. Tại sao Đức Mẹ Fatima chỉ có nói đến nước Nga? Chuyện là sau khi Nga Hoàng Nicholas II thoái vị vào ngày 15 tháng 3 năm 1917, thì một khởi đầu mới của một phong trào xuất hiện, dẫn tới sự kiện Vladimir Lenin lên nắm quyền. Lenin là đồ đệ của Karl Marx và lúc đó rắp tâm đưa học thuyết Marxism vào nước Nga, bắt đầu bằng cuộc cách mạng xã hội chủ nghĩa. Thế là thuyết cộng sản của Lenin từ từ tàn phá nước Nga trong suốt hơn bảy thập niên tiếp theo và lan rộng ra nhiều nước trên thế giới, trong đó có Trung Quốc và Việt Nam. Khi Đức Mẹ hiện ra tại Fatima vào ngày 13 tháng 5 năm 1917, thế giới chỉ biết đến cuộc cách mạng tháng Hai tại Nga, chứ chưa biết chủ nghĩa cộng sản đang nhoi lên nắm quyền và lan rộng thế giới. Thế rồi đến ngày 13 tháng 7 năm 1917, Đức Mẹ tiên báo với ba trẻ Fatima về nước Nga như sau. “Để ngăn ngừa [một Thế Chiến khác], Mẹ sẽ đến yêu cầu dâng Nước Nga cho Trái Tim Vô Nhiễm Mẹ, và việc rước lễ để đền tạ vào các ngày thứ Bẩy đầu tháng. Nếu lời yêu cầu của Mẹ được lưu ý, Nước Nga sẽ trở lại và sẽ có hòa bình; nếu không, nó sẽ gieo rắc các sai lạc của nó khắp thế giới, gây ra nhiều cuộc chiến tranh và bách hại Giáo Hội. Người lành sẽ bị tử vì đạo, Đức Thánh Cha sẽ chịu nhiều đau khổ, nhiều quốc gia sẽ bị tiêu diệt. Cuối cùng, Trái Tim Vô Nhiễm Mẹ sẽ chiến thắng. Và nay giai đoạn đó đã sang trang. Nước Nga lại quậy nữa. Thế giới vào năm 1917 không thể tưởng ra được những nguy hại mà nước Nga và thuyết cộng sản gây ra cho thế giới. Hôm nay, hơn ba mươi năm sau khi Liên Bang Xô Viết xụp đổ, nước Nga lại cựa quậy và đang làm chấn động thế giới với mối đe doạ mới khiến nhiều người thiệt mạng, coi thường công pháp quốc tế, và sự toàn vẹn lãnh thổ của các quốc gia. Mối đe doạ của Nga còn có nguy cơ gây ra thế chiến thứ ba và cuộc chiến tranh hạt nhân. Nhưng theo ký giả Philip Kosloski của tạp chí Aleteia, “Tương lai không được viết trên đá và chúng ta có thể làm cho thế giới được tươi sáng hơn, bắt đầu với lời kêu gọi của Đức Mẹ, ‘hãy sám hối, hãy sám hối, hãy sám hối’”. Bài đọc 1: Xh 3,1-8.13-15. Chúa cho ông Môisen biết Chúa là Ðấng Hằng Có. Và sai ông đi cứu dân Người khỏi nô lệ Ai Cập, dẫn về đất Chúa hứa.

Bài đọc 2: 1Cr 10,1-6.10-12. Thánh Phaolô cho biết Chúa đã thương ban nhiều ơn cho cha ông chúng ta, nhưng các ngài vô ân bội nghĩa nên bị Chúa Phạt, chúng ta cần lấy đó làm bài học cho chúng ta.

Bài Tin Mừng: Lc 13,1-9. Khi nghe biết có số người bị tổng trấn Philatô giết. Chúa Giêsu bảo: "Nếu các ngươi không sám hối tội lỗi, các ngươi cũng phải chết như vậy". Ðó là Chúa dạy chúng ta phải cải thiện đời sống.

Công trình xây tường rào chung quanh khuôn viên nhà thờ. Dãy hàng rào gỗ xiu quẹo. Nay giáo xứ kêu gọi mỗi gia đình tặng vài viên gạch cho công trình xây dựng này. Mỗi viên gạch block lớn có giá là 7 mỹ kim. Cần tổng cộng là 10,000 viên gạch block. Xin đưa những đóng góp cho các cha sau lễ. Dự tính khởi công vào tháng 5 năm nay.

Tổng cộng quyên góp tính đến hôm nay 20/3: $51,891.

Tuần vừa qua có thêm rất nhiều viên gạch. Giáo xứ xin biết ơn những tấm lòng luôn muốn chỉnh trang và xây dựng Nhà Chúa.

Báo Cáo Gây Quỹ ADA 2022: Sau tuần thứ 6, giáo xứ xin được tổng cộng $263,673, tức là 90% mức chỉ tiêu, đến từ 569 gia đình.

Năm nay giáo xứ xin mỗi gia đình đóng góp $400 cho quỹ ADA. Ba công trình sẽ được xây dựng: (1) Bãi đậu xe Đền Thánh (2) Hệ thống chiếu sáng trong nhà thờ, (3) Dãy tường rào chung bao bọc khuôn viên nhà thờ.
