Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Since next Sunday is Mother’s Day and the month of May is set aside to remember the Blessed Mother Mary, I would like to spend time reflecting on Mary in our faith and in our lives. We have respect and admiration for Mary’s example and her crucial role in the plan of salvation. Even though she was afraid, her deep faith and purity motivated her to say yes to God’s will (see Lk. 1:26-38). In her womb, God united humanity to Himself when He became one of us. Mary was closely united to Jesus, keeping all that He said and did in her heart (see Lk. 2:19). As Mary stood at the foot of the cross, Christ’s heart was pierced by a sword made of metal and Mary’s was pierced by a sword of sorrow, as Simeon had foretold in Luke 2:34-35. As Christ gave up His life for us on the cross, He also gave us His mother when He spoke to His beloved disciple and to all disciples, “Behold your moth-er” (Jn. 19:27). Mary, our Blessed Mother, partici-pated in the key moments of Jesus’ work of salva-tion: at the conception and birth of Christ, His Pas-sion and death, and the birth of the Church on Pen-tecost (see Acts 1:14). It doesn’t end there, be-cause Christ has brought her to heaven. She was assumed into Heaven, body and soul, and reigns in heaven as the Queen of heaven and earth (see Rev-elations 12). In doing so, Christ has fulfilled God’s promise of fidelity to the throne of David, the king of Israel (see 2 Sam. 7:16). Like the kings in the line of David, such as King Solomon, whose mothers would be queen and sit at the king’s right hand--“At your right hand stands the queen, clothed in gold of Ophir” (Psalm 45)-- so too does Christ respect and love His mother by giving her the same honor. Our Blessed Mother Mary sits in heaven with her Son and savior, looking upon us with love and speaking to Jesus about us, praying for us. Mary loves us and wants us to live happily with her Son forever in heaven. She is a powerful intercessor and a loving mother; so let us ask her for her pray-ers. I would like to encourage you to pray the rosary at least once a week this month and to turn toward her with a daily “Hail Mary”. Pray as a family, and place flowers by a picture of Mary in your house this month. May she continue to bring us closer to our Lord, who is our hope and salvation. In Christ, Fr. Matt

Make a friend, be a friend, bring a friend to Christ

REFLECTION ON PIETY We learned at our Cursillo weekend that Piety, Study and Action are the three ele-ments necessary to grow spiritually and to reach out to change the world in Christ’s name.

Piety is living a life of grace in a conscious, growing and shared manner. The practice of piety is an intentional process of spending time with God.

We must remember that authentic Piety is not how many rosaries we say or how many masses we attend. It is the orienting of our life towards God, doing our very best to carryout His will and His desire regardless of our own personal will and desires.

A life that is geared towards God is not always an easy road, but a road that is worth traveling. To live a life of true piety one must be joyful and courageous.

What will you do this week to help you grow closer to God? Have you discerned God’s will for you? Will you be courageous enough to put His will before your own desires?

ULTREYA Saint John the Baptist will host our next Ultreya in Sebahar Hall on Saturday, May 12 following 8:30 am Mass. Our witness speakers will be

Bob and Kris Malanandruccolo from St. John the Baptist. Please bring a friend! This is a great way to introduce others to the movement and help in their discernment process for attending a future weekend.

For those interested in learning more about the Cursillo movement or attend-ing a Cursillo Weekend, please visit www.jolietcursillo.org or contact our Parish Coordinator, Amy Serritella at: [email protected]

Are You Called?

We need parishioners who are able to commit to spending one hour each week in the Chapel at St. John the Baptist. Especially needed are adorers to cover the night hours weekly from 10:00 P.M. Tuesday through 7:00 A.M. on Wednesday morning. Most urgently needed is someone to cover 3:00 A.M. to 4:00 A.M.

It is a wonderful way to experience the silence and peace of the Lord’s presence as we keep watch before the Blessed Sacrament.

As Jesus says to his disciples in the garden of Gethsemane in Mark 14:37, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour”?

Please contact Arlene Reichert at 1-630-890-2857. Thank you.

Estate Planning Gifts

When making or updating your will, please consider a gift to St. John the Bap-tist. An estate planning attorney can assist you in adding your bequest or endow-ment. If you want to leave the proceeds of an insurance policy or IRA assets to St. John’s, be sure to indicate this on the insurance form or IRA beneficiary forms and not in your will because insurance proceeds or IRA assets will be disposed of by the terms of the insurance policy or IRA document and not your will.

Please remember the good works of our parish in your will. For more information on how you can accomplish this, please contact Father Matt Pratscher at the parish office, 630-668-0918, ext. 0. Thank you.

Sacrificial Giving We are ever grateful for your loving generosity and sharing in the Ministries of Serving the Lord here at

St. John the Baptist Parish. Parish Collections

Abram tithed (giving at least 10%) as a symbol that he depended totally on God. Moses said tith-ing was holy and an act of worship. Yes, even Jesus talked about money because money is a necessary part of our lives and it is also a neces-sary part of the viability of the church. Our tithe is merely a way to recognize that. Each family should prayerfully discern their own situation and understand that tithing is God’s plan for sup-porting the church and the poor. We are ever grateful for your generosity and sharing in the Min-istries of Serving the Lord here at St. John the Bap-tist. Please help us meet our weekly needs of $25,845.

The second envelope is for your personal Mass intention card for the Mom in your life.

Dear Parishioners, If you haven’t yet made a donation to our St. John the Baptist School’s Children’s Annual Ap-peal Fund, will you please prayerfully consider making a donation this year? Because of your gen-erosity, our donations to date exceed $33,000.

CATHOLICS FOR LIFE

“May the dignity of man according to the Creator’s plan be spread.”

~St. Pope John Paul II God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." -Genesis 1:27-28 Father of mercy and grace, we thank you for the gift of our children. Grant that every fiber of our being may rejoice when a new baby, our own or any else’s, is born into the world. Help us to welcome them as we would welcome you, for whenever a new baby is conceived, another life to bear your image and another voice to praise and worship you, is beginning.

Congratulations, Fran Hartigan! Woman of the Year, 2018

St. John the Baptist Council of Catholic Women

Fran Hartigan was selected as this year’s CCW Woman of the Year and is well known to all of us for the love and care she shows to everyone, especially the many people she serves. We know her smile, her generosity, her many talents, and her will-ingness to always be there to help on so many projects.

Fran is a valued volunteer at CDH in the gift shop where she has helped out for the past 15 years, often filling in when staff-ing is low. She has been the principal caregiver for family members, is a good neighbor, visits the sick and always sup-ports our CCW activities by baking and working at them. Fran is especially known for the love and care she gives to the resi-dents at Winfield Woods. She spends every Wednesday morn-ing at Winfield Woods running BINGO games, bringing cal-endars, magazines, greeting cards and essentials to the residents. She gives out birthday cards with a thought-ful present inside each card which brings much joy to the residents. Fran also extends a special invitation to the residents to attend our CCW Holiday Fair and Spring Bazaar. On those occasions we see first-hand her affection for the residents and their affection for her. They enjoy the opportunity to shop and visit with other CCW volunteers, as well.

Fran was celebrated along with women throughout the Joliet Diocese at the annual Woman of the Year Mass and luncheon at the Cathedral of St. Raymond on Saturday, April 21st. Fr. John Sebahar, the Spiritual Advisor for the JDCCW, was the presider at the Mass, along with many other spiritual advisors to parish CCW groups who concelebrated. Fran is pictured above with Fr. Tom Cargo, former pastor at St. John’s. Our pastor, Fr. Matt, was unable to attend because it was at the same time as our First Communion here at St. John’s.

Fran will be crowning the Blessed Mother at the May Crowning after the 8:30am Mass at St. John’s on Saturday, May 5th.

This month St. John the Baptist Parish is conducting its Baby Bottles for Life cam-paign to benefit, support and educate pregnant women facing crisis or unintend-ed pregnancies. The funds collected through the Bottles for Life campaign sup-port the programs and services of the Waterleaf Medical Clinic and Education and Resource Center located in Aurora. Waterleaf provides practical help; pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, STD testing and treatment as well as contin-uing education and support for women in our community who would other-wise be at risk for choosing abortion.

Last year with the support of churches like St. John the Baptist, Waterleaf served 846 clients, performed 540 pregnancy tests and 404 ultrasounds, and rescued 83 babies.

If you didn’t take a Baby Bottle last weekend, extras are in the parish office vestibule which is open 24/7! Bottles should be returned to the parish by the weekend of June 2nd & 3rd.

Please make checks payable to Waterleaf. Your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Dear Friends of Catholic Schools: Urgent action is needed. Notify your state senator today, urging him/her to vote "NO" on SB 2236. Go to this link for instructions: Urgent Action Needed on SB 2236. More than 50,000 families state-wide have applied for the new Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Over $45 million has been raised thus far. School Choice has very strong support in Illinois. Sen-ate Bill 2236 attacks the new initiative that allows low-income and working-class children to receive scholarships to attend a school of their choice by tying the program to the unpredictable budget process EVERY year. Your support is crucial. Please let other supporters of Catholic schools and school choice know that action is need-ed now. Thank you for assistance. Rev. John Belmonte, SJ, Ph.D. Superintendent of Catholic Schools Diocese of Joliet
