The strength of a material is its ability to withstand an applied load without failure

or plastic deformation. The field of strength of materials deals with forces and

deformations that result from external forces that acting on a material.

DEFINITION

Units • British system: a system of weights and measures based on the foot and pound and second and

pint. British Imperial System, English system. system of weights and measures - system of

measurement for length and weight and duration.

• Metric system : The metric system is a system of measurement that uses the meter, liter, and gram as

base units of length (distance), capacity (volume), and weight (mass) respectively. To measure smaller or

larger quantities, we use units derived from the metric units.

• SI system :SI unit is an international system of measurements that are used universally in technical and

scientific research to avoid the confusion with the units. Having a standard unit system is important

because it helps the entire world to understand the measurements in one set of unit system. Following is

the table with base British system , metric system and SI units:

Name of the Quantity British system Metric system SI system

1 Length (l) Foot (ft), inch (in) Meter (m) Meter (m)

2 Force (F) Pound (lb) Newton (N) Newton (N)

3 MASS (M) Pound (lb) GRAM GRAM

4 TIME Second (sec) Second (sec) Second (sec)

5 temperature Fahrenheit (°F) degree Celsius (°C) degree Celsius (°C)

6 Electric current (I) Ampere (A) Ampere (A) Ampere (A)

TYPES OF Loads

1-Concentrated load

2-Concentrated moment

3-Uniformly distributed load

4-Triangular load
