A UNIQUE RESTING PLACE The Memorial Garden on Saint Catherine of Siena's campus is a modern version of a Columbarium. It is an in ground repository into which an urn containing cremated remains is placed for permanent burial. The Memorial Garden, nestled behind the church, provides for the respectful placement of cremated remains in a serene and solemn area for prayer and meditation. With your final resting place only a short distance from the Church, your family and friends attending Mass will be able to visit and pay their respects often. For further information or questions on purchasing a niche, please contact Marcy Thompson at the Church Office at 919-570-0070, ext. 105.

Celebrating Corpus Christi – Joining the Church throughout the world in celebrating the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Our Lord (Corpus Christi), observed in the USA on June 3, 2018, we will be doing a traditional Corpus Christi Procession that Sunday afternoon, two weeks from now. I had hoped to do the procession through our neighborhood, but regrettably, we were not able to secure permission from the City of Wake Forest. Thus, we will still do the formal Eucharistic Procession, using our parish grounds, with the traditional canopy, accompanied by devotional prayer. Our prayer will start that Sunday morning of Corpus Christi, June 3, 2018 directly following the 8 am Mass with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church. Morning Prayer will follow beginning at 9:30 am, followed by a Eucharistic Procession outside and around the church, then concluding with Benediction on a special altar to be erected for this devotion on the esplanade in front of the church. Both the bronze doors and the wooden doors into the Adoration Chapel will be opened and thus from the esplanade, you will be able to follow the reposition of the Blessed Sacrament into the Chapel and the continuation of our beautiful parish commitment to Perpetual Adoration of Our Lord. Plan to join us then for this great devotional prayer of the Church honoring Our Lord in His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Blessed Sacrament. Update: Now Welcoming Two Summer Seminarians – I recently announced the blessing that we will welcome the Rev. Mr. David Miller, a newly ordained transitional deacon, for the summer months, from June 3 through July 29, 2018. Deacon Miller is com-pleting his third year of theology and formation for the Priesthood at Saint John XXIII Seminary in the Boston area, having had a full career in the United States Army, serving in Special Forces. Please God, Deacon Miller will be ordained to the Priesthood for the Diocese of Raleigh in June 2019. This week, we have the additional blessing of adding Seminarian Jairo Maldonado. Originally from Ábrego, Colombia, Jairo has been studying for our Diocese for several years and is now in Second Theology at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia. Please God, Jairo will be ordained to the Diaconate in the Spring 2019. I know you join me in welcoming both Deacon David Miller and Seminarian Jairo Maldonado to Saint Catherine, as well as assuring them of our prayers, together with all our seminarians and all those who are discerning a priestly vocation. Letter Regarding Change in Assignments – In case you were out of town last weekend and do not have computer access, kindly see a copy of my letter placed in the body of the text of this bulletin for your reference. As a reference point, ideally, the Bishop assigns Parochial Vicars for a period of about 2 years and also in a couple of different parishes, so that these brother priests may have priestly ministry experience in a variety of parish settings before beginning service as a new pastor and under the direction of our mentoring process. Pastors, are ideally given two terms, with a maximum of 12 years at the assigned parish.

We were blessed here at Saint Catherine’s to have Father Tighe as Pastor for 9 years, preceded by Father John Parish, who sadly died very unexpectedly at 49 years old. Continue to pray for the repose of his soul. My term has also been far too short, but follows the retirement and reassignment, respectfully of two Passionist priests, serving at the Cathedral, Father Justin Kerber, C.P. and Father Ed-ward Wolanski, C.P. Father Kerber has served in our Diocese as a pastor in faithful, dedicated priestly ministry for over 20 years – near a record for a religious order priest in our Diocese. Thus, please keep among your intentions, all our priests receiving new assignments and those retiring, as well as our three transitional deacons, who will be the first priests to be ordained to the Priest-hood in our new Cathedral: Deacon Michael Coveyou, Deacon Chris Koehn and Deacon Marlon Mendieta, whom you know and was stationed with us here at Saint Catherine last summer. Their ordination to the Priesthood will be celebrated June 23, 2018 at 10 am. You are most welcome to join us for the Mass.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN THE CATHOLIC FAITH? St. Catherine of Siena will soon begin a new journey in faith to share the richness of the Catholic Church and our parish family. We invite you to learn what the Church teaches, and be introduced to some of our parish members. These sessions also are opportunities for you, and others that you may wish to invite, to ask those perplexing and difficult questions you may have about the Church. These gatherings are for inquirers and are open to people who are unbaptized, as well as those who are baptized Christians from Protestant or Evangelical backgrounds. There will be four sessions before the RCIA process begins in August. This first session is June 4th, at 7:00 PM in the dining room at St. Catherine of Siena. The other classes are June 18th, July 16th and July 30th all at 7:00 PM. Feel free to come to any or all sessions. If you would like further information, please call at 919-570-0070 ext. 108 or email at [email protected].

BEREAVEMENT APOSTOLATE Our mission is to be present for the bereaved when they need it, at the time they need it. The death may be recent or it may seem like “time should have healed this wound already” and you may not be quite sure where to turn to get that quiet listening ear – that is when you can contact us for support. We also hold Bereavement Support Group Sessions for adults when needed. We have just completed our Spring Session and plan to hold our next one in the Fall. VOCATION PRAYER FOR ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA Come join us every Tuesday after the 8:30 AM mass at the communion rail as we pray for religious vocations. God tells us an amazing thing, that even before he created us, he knew us and called us. Everyone is called by God to know, love and serve him and has a particular vocation in life. We pray that the Holy Spirit will enlighten and open our hearts of our children and grandchildren to hear the call of God's invitation to love and serve Him and His Church in a consecrated, religious or priestly life. We all need to pray for an increase in religious vocations and for labors for the vineyard of the Lord. One of the most important ways we can support the Church and our priests is through prayer. Come join us on Tuesday! For any questions contact Chris Verdecanna, 919-435-7277, via e-mail [email protected].

ADORATION Would you like to be a night watchman with Jesus? In the Garden of Gethsemane, the night before He died on the cross, Jesus agonized alone because the Disciples could not keep watch with Him for even one hour. Jesus said, “The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” Today we are invited again to keep watch with Our Blessed Lord in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar, to be a night watchman. Can you spend one hour with Jesus? Currently, there is a great need for generous souls to sacrifice one hour of sleep a week to keep watch with Jesus. There are many committed adorers who have already answered this call, but they can use your help! I would love to tell you more about Perpetual Adoration and our chapel that is open 24 hours of the day, 7 days a week, for almost 10 years now. Please call Linda Specter, Adoration Coordinator, at 919-761-8705.

WHAT IS RCIA? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process established for the universal Church for individuals to become Catholic and receive the sacraments of initiation — Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. This initiation process also involves a parish community experiencing a renewal in faith as it prepares and welcomes new members into the Church. The Rite speaks of conversion as a “spiritual journey.” Centered on fostering a deep relationship with Jesus and the Church he founded, this journey takes place through distinct stages over a period of time suitable to bring about a thorough catechesis, significant experience of the parish community, and commitment to the liturgical and moral life of the Catholic faithful. The RCIA process is a restoration of the ancient catechumenate, arising within the first three centuries following the era of the apostles. It was the early Church’s way of Christianizing the pagan Roman Empire. The Second Vatican Council called for the restoration and use of this venerable and powerful method of initiation for the worldwide Church. Who is RCIA for? 1. Persons in need of Baptism. 2. Persons baptized in another Christian tradition who desire to become Catholic. 3. Persons baptized Catholic in need of First Communion and/or Confirmation. If you would like more information regarding the RCIA process here at St. Catherine’s contact Sue Gammon 919-570-0070 ext. 108.

CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD CGS is a Montessori style hands-on approach for preschool children,

ages 3-5, to learn about their Catholic faith. The children are brought

to a joyful encounter, with the mystery of God, through ancient biblical

images such as 3-D maps of Israel and Jerusalem, the use of dioramas,

a miniature altar and baptismal font. They come to understand Jesus as

a real person who lived in a real place and time, yet is still alive today

caring for them as their Good Shepherd. Class meets for two hours

per week from September thru May. To learn more about the program

go to www.cgsusa.org or on You Tube: The Catechesis of the Good

HELP NEEDED The St. Catherine of Siena Altar Society is in need a few servants to help straighten the Church on Monday mornings. If you have any ques-tions or would like more information, please contact Teri Bailey, [email protected].

WHY CATHOLIC EDUCATION MATTERS St. Catherine of Siena School students learn that God is present and active in their lives and in the world. They learn to recognize God in their daily experiences, especially in the midst of life’s challenges. They develop a strong sense of sacramental awareness through daily prayer, weekly mass, and monthly confession. They see the signs of God’s love around them, and become instruments of God’s grace in their own neighborhoods, communities and the world through Virtue Education. There is no such thing as a secular subject, as all learning starts with God at the center and permeates from there to develop a child's understanding of such subjects.

May 13, 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord today, it is with renewed joy for the Life God gives us in Christ, especially in and through the precious gift of our dear mothers, who we also remember today with the intercession of Our Lady, in this month dedicated to Her and the example of faith She provides to all people.

Each of these celebrations remind us that in our encounter with Christ, we do not do alone the mission He gives to us, but always in communion with the work Christ gives to His entire Church, guided by the Shep-herd He provides to each Diocese. To that end, Bishop Luis Zarama has informed me that he has prayerfully discerned that the mission of our Diocese requires that Father Chesco Garcia begin to serve the faithful at the Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary in Wilmington and that I serve as Pastor and Rector of Holy Name of Jesus Ca-thedral in Raleigh. Father Jim Magee will continue to serve as Parochial Vicar here at Saint Catherine, under the priestly leadership of Father Bill John Acosta, whom the Bishop has also prayerfully discerned will serve as the new Pastor of this parish.

That said, the challenge in any move is leaving our regular interaction with friends, co-workers and fa-miliar surroundings. There is no doubt than when the effective date for these new assignments arrives on June 26, 2018, I will greatly miss regularly serving among you. Saint Catherine of Siena is an exceptional Catholic parish community that is blessed to have an excellent pastoral staff. It has been truly my honor to serve you and as I continue to assist Bishop Luis as his Vicar General, I look forward to work closely with Father Acosta and our parish Facilities Committee, as we determine how we may provide buildings which best serve the tre-mendous current and future growth of our parish community.

For now, Father Chesco and I join in asking your prayers for our parish community during this time of transition, as well as for Father Acosta, Father Chesco and for me, as we prepare to serve those who will be entrusted to our care. Through the intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church, may Our Lord Jesus strengthen us in the Holy Eucharist we receive, that we may do His Will and serve as He intends, today and always. Sincerely in Christ,

Msgr. David D. Brockman, V.G. Pastor
