Feast of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist
Dear Parishioners and Friends of Holy Angels,
Thanks to the Medical Sisters of St. Joseph, most especially Sr. Susmitha, for coming last weekend to all the Masses and telling the story of their origin and their apostolate of mercy here and around the world. What great missionaries these religious sisters are! What angels of mercy we have in them at our Archdiocesan owned and run Villa St. Francis for the elderly and the infirm! I hope that you give generously to the Mission Appeal we are having this weekend in our second collection to help these and other missionaries fulfill their work for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I also ask you to pray for
their success in their holy work.
There are always people to pray for and causes to champion. Thank heavens we have our wonderful Prayer Chain that Pat Scheibe and Judy Goens administer so lovingly to express our needs and desires in the spiritual realm. Unfortunately, however, into each person’s
life come shocks that shake us to the core. Prayer is so important
for each of these shocks.
I ask that you especially continue to remember in prayer the parishioners of our neighboring church, St. Francis de Sales, in Lansing, their new parochial administrator, Fr. Balachandra Miriyala, known as Fr. Bala, and our long-time neighbor, native of Leavenworth County, alumnus of Immaculata High School and beloved priest of our Archdiocese for decades, Fr. Bill Mc Evoy, as he transitions from being pastor there and goes to Mayo Clinic on a leave of absence. May God be with all of them and guide them
always.
Most sadly and unfortunately, we have suffered in our presbyterate an inordinately high number of priests of late asking for and receiving a leave of absence. I ask you to pray for all of them and for our presbyterate who goes for the first time in two years to Conception Abbey, more than a hundred miles away, for this coming week, for convocation. Because of that, we will not be able to have 8
am daily Masses Tuesday through Thursday of this coming week.
I also ask your special prayers for the family of a seminary classmate and dear friend whom many of you encountered not even a year ago last October when he came here and delivered a great presentation in our church on Covid-19 and the Church’s response to it: Fr. (and Dr.) Tad Pacholczyk. He asks for prayers for the soul of his nephew and consolation and comfort for his entire family in this most soul-searing time for them. Tragically, we know that since this time of pandemic with the restrictions, quarantines, and isolation of so many, in which normal and good personal and social interaction has been cut off to make so many too solitary in their life, the statistics have soared for those who have taken the most tragic route because of it – most especially and sadly among young
people. We need to continually reach out to the most vulnerable because of this – but sometimes we cannot detect who those most
vulnerable are – as we see here.

October is Mary, Queen of Victory and The Holy Rosary and (fittingly) “Respect
Life Month”
Archbishop Naumann has asked that parishes
reinvigorate their pro-Life Committees and
distribution lists as he leads our archdiocese in the pro-Life battle preparing for next August's "Value
Them Both" Kansas Constitutional Amendment
vote.
Monday, Sept. 27: Holy Angels Day for 40 Days
for Life on the sidewalk at 4840 College Blvd, Overland Park, KS
Sat, Oct. 2: Liberated by Truth: Pro-Life
Conference by Renown Author and speaker Terry Beatley, followed by the Life Will Be
Victorious Celebration with Archbishop
Naumann, St. Michael the Archangel Parish in
Leawood
Sun, Oct. 3: National Life Chain Sunday,
2:30-3:30 on 4th St in Leavenworth.
Dear Holy Angels Parish,
After three long years of saving, fundraising,
applying for grants and a whole lot of praying, we finally have the handicapped converted van, we
needed, for Emma. Words can not express our
gratitude, for all your help, in making this dream
come true. Please join us in celebration, Sunday
October 3, as Bishop Conley and Fr. McDonald
bless our van!
Much love, gratitude and prayers.
The Shay Family
(Nathan, Brieanna, Ethan, Emma, Eli and Elliott.)
Many times, we classmates ask for our brother priest’s prayers for various things. Rarely does one of us ask specifically for the efficacy of a Mass for an intention as we know how important each Mass intention is and we restrict the request for a Mass from another of us for only the most important spiritual matters. Listen to my friend’s request
for prayers.
“If you might be able to offer prayers and a Mass for the repose of the soul of my 17-year-old nephew, Owen Luke Weldy, I would be grateful. He took his own life in Phoenix and I did his funeral and committal yesterday. Such a bright, promising fellow, being pursued by Harvard, Yale and Stanford, an athlete, outstanding violinist, and the only person in Arizona to receive a letter for early acceptance from West Point.” I was honored to celebrate a
Mass for Owen’s soul today.
These shocks to our system remind each of us never to think we really know the struggles of another and to continually reach out to others – even those we think may
be doing quite well – because we never know in what state their soul and mind really are. Remember that we all need to pray for each other, and that we all need others in our lives and to reach out to those who may seem isolated. Please, if any of you know of parishioners who seem
isolated or in need of company, let our office or me know.
After so much isolation, we offer up prayers for a wonderful, festive Patronal Feast of the Holy Angels “2 Fer One” celebration next weekend. We exult in our parish reuniting and coming together again as we celebrate the parish’s feast day to enjoy each other’s company and to rejoice in the significant addition to our church and to our liturgical rites in the blessing and first use of the pipe
organ in the 10:30 Mass.
Many months ago, in the last part of spring, our parish office issued a survey asking folks how they – after restrictions were lifted on Mass attendance – would best like to come together again as a parish family. The majority that responded to the 600 surveys that were sent said that they most desired returning to Mass and for an “adult parish celebration”. With our festive gathering at the Angelus Hour next weekend on Sunday Oct. 3 for all parishioners and all who are at 10:30 Mass, we hope to fulfill the desire of those parishioners who responded to the survey by enjoying adult beverages offered at our parish’s
noon patronal feast celebration.
Next weekend’s celebration, however, is really more of a “3 Fer One” in that we rejoice in having the blessing immediately after 10:30 Mass of the handicapped-accessible van our parishioners in great part aided in
purchasing for our then-parishioner Shay family’s special-needs daughter, Emma. How wonderful to have that beautiful family be part of our parish celebration! Please see the great photo of them thanking us and the
accompanying note from them to us in today’s bulletin.
Finally, may we exult in the start of the glory of beautiful
autumn weather!

Catholics - Did You Know?
We’ve probably all heard the name “Purgatory”,
but may lack an understanding of what that
means. Although the word itself is not in the
Bible, the concept is. In the Old Testament there
are instances where the Jews mentioned offering
prayers and even alms to help cleanse the souls of the departed. Jesus and his Apostles grew up
with this faith. In the New Testament, Jesus
references Purgatory in Matthew 12:32, where He
states, “[W]hoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.” This implies that forgiveness of some sins will happen after death. It makes sense this would happen before one could enter Heaven, meeting God face to face. So what happens in Purgatory?
We don’t know much about the nature of Purgatory, or how long one would be there. The
Catholic Catechism reassures us that “all who die
in God’s grace and friendship, but still
imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their
eternal salvation; but after death they undergo
purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of Heaven” (No. 1030).
God is just and merciful, but death doesn’t free
us from the consequences of what we have done -
or not done. We need to be purified before we
become one of the saints in heaven.
The Catholic Church has a great tradition of “The
Communion of Saints” in Heaven being
connected to the living. On November 2 we
celebrate All Souls Day with Mass (which always
brings Heaven to earth), remembering those who have departed by offering them our prayers.
Every Mass is offered for someone – usually
deceased. During Mass you will hear the priest
calling us to remember the faithful departed “who
have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection”. So, remember this heavenly bridge
can be used as an offering for someone who has
died and may still be in Purgatory, and ask them
in turn to pray for you!
CONGRATULATIONS TO
Bryan Nierman & Sarah Wirtz
who were married on
September 25th.
Lord, bless this couple who have been joined in the
sacrament of matrimony.
Grant them many years
together, that they may be a
sign of your faithful love.
