PARISH LIFE & MINISTRY
FR. TOM
You have been told what is
good, and what the Lord
requires of you:
Only to do justice,
and to love goodness,
and to walk humbly
with your God.
—Micah 6:8
“I can do all things in Him who
strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
This quote from today’s Second
Reading is one of those verses I
have committed to memory. I
repeat it over and over again as I
train and compete. Notice that the
emphasis in the verse is on Him,
that is, God / Jesus. I must
continually reexamine my life to
make sure He still is the focus. In our
society it’s easy to get off track and
fall into self-centered behavior
rather than God-centered.
In today’s Gospel (Matthew 22)
Jesus notices some are not
prepared for the wedding banquet,
they are not physically dressed
correctly. To be “physically
prepared” is important, but this
Gospel is really talking about being
“spiritually prepared.” It is important
that we all make time to improve
our soul as well as our body. To be in
good shape is a wonderful thing,
physically and spiritually.
This month of October, this Respect
Life month, is a great opportunity to
respect our spiritual lives and give
more time and attention to our
faith. Spend some time with Him
who gives us strength. You can
make private time for prayer or use
an app to grow in faith. Our parish
has a subscription to Formed.org
and the steps for free access are
spelled out in our bulletin.
Formed.org has movies on saints,
sacramental programs, Bible
teachings and more. The
Archdiocese is also presenting a
Pathway for Missionary Discipleship
(free) and the information and
registration is available via the link
http://store.la-archdiocese.org/mdp
and go to the Office of New
Evangelization.
We make efforts to eat right and to
exercise so to stay in physical shape.
What steps can be made to stay in
spiritual shape? Take advantage of
our parish subscription and be
“Formed” in your faith.

STAYING IN SHAPE
WOMEN’S RETREAT AT MATER DOLOROSA
WALKING WITH GOD THROUGH DIFFICULT TIMES
NOVEMBER 6—8, 2020
Where do we go in difficult circumstances, and how do we find God?
Walking with God is a retreat that may help considerably. Many of us have
felt hurt and separation during this health crisis, just as those did before us
in sacred scripture. In listening and feeling, we can reflect on where God is
calling us during this process, that far from being abandoned, He is with us
on the journey if only we can notice His presence.
Mater Dolorosa has options for in-house retreats, online retreats, and
individual private retreats. Please visit https://materdolorosa.org/events/
category/retreats/weekend/ for more information. If you have any
questions, call Jill Muhs (626) 688-1253 or Ana Ptasinski (626) 355-3146.
Please remember to pray for
more vocations to religious life
and the priesthood during this
holy season. This can be our
special gift to the Church.
Next Sunday is World Mission Sunday. World Mission Sunday offers us a
unique opportunity to fulfill Jesus’ call to be witnesses to the ends of the
world. Please support the missions.

A CALL TO FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP
PRAYER LIST
A STATEMENT FROM THE REGIONAL BISHOP EDWARD WM. CLARK
CONCERNING THE NATIONAL ELECTIONS
In just a few weeks, the Nation will complete the voting process. I am taking this
opportunity to respond to some inquiries I have received from Church members in recent
weeks. First, the Church does not support or oppose any candidates running for
office. Second, where the Church takes a position on particular legislation, that position is
based on issues of morality and not of politics. In casting your vote, consider the moral
implications of the proposition. Third, there is no “Catholic party.” No political party fully
agrees with all the moral positions of the Church. If anyone, even a bishop or a priest, should
tell you that as a Catholic you cannot vote for a particular party or that you must vote for one
party rather than the other, know that the Church does not endorse such a position. Vote
the party of your choice. Fourth, the Catholic Church is not a one issue church. There are a
great many moral and ethical concerns the Church is called to address. It is a danger to
consider only one issue to the detriment of all others. Fifth, as Catholics, we are called to
vote for the common good (in other words, to vote for what is the greatest good for the
greatest number of people) and to vote from our conscience (not from political, social or
financial convenience). Finally, the Church encourages each one of us to register and vote –
it is the responsible and Catholic thing to do. We are all called to be faithful citizens.

How do you become a Missionary Disciple?
The Office of New Evangelization for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has
developed a Pathway toward becoming Missionary Disciples. The process is a
journey through 3 stages: Hear, Give and Go. The first stage of Hear is
entitled Truth of the Cross. Explore the liberating truths found in Jesus’ death
on the cross and His glorious resurrection from the dead. Two large group
presentations will take place: October 14, 2020 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. or
November 7, 2020 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. A Continuing Process of four weeks of small group gatherings with
different options throughout the week will follow. For more information on this and the other Pathway events click
