CATHOLIC CHURCH

January 10, 2021 Baptism of the Lord
Things above from Fr. Bilot
St. John Henry Newman (1801 1890),
native of England, was a prolific writer and speaker
in his day. He was an Anglican Priest prior to his
conversion to Catholicism. One of his reflections
from his “Meditations” spoke on happiness and I
believe a good meditation for us as we embark on a
New Year.

“God knows what is my greatest happiness,
but I do not. There is no rule about what is happy and
good; what suits one would not suit another. And the
ways by which perfection is reached vary very much;
the medicines necessary for our souls are very
different from each other. Thus God leads us by
strange ways; we know He wills our happiness, but
we neither know what our happiness is, nor the way.
We are blind; left to ourselves we would take the
wrong way; we must leave it to him.”

With the calamity of the past year and its
effects still lingering into the present I believe we
need to step back to spiritually look at where we have
been, where we are, and where we need to go. We
need Jesus to help us find the happiness and calm we
are searching for.

I use the quote from St. Newman because
everyone wants to be happy. We may believe we
know makes us happy, but St. John Newman
challenges us to make sure by checking in with Jesus.
Newman says we “must leave it to him (Jesus)”. We
celebrated Christmas, God becoming human, because
we were and are continuing to make a mess of our
humanity. This “mess” of course stems from the evil
one “messing” with our heart, spirit and mind. Evil
wants to convince us that the pleasure and desires of
the world are better than the gift of God’s love and
friendship.

In prayer, if we are docile and humble, we can
discern what happiness is and how it should move us
forward in life. Our souls were created in God’s
image and likeness, and God’s plan for each of us is
different. So how do we know what will truly make
us happy (even if we say I am happy already?)

I suggest we embrace praying Sacred
Scripture, which in turn, will help us to be more
mindful of contemplating on the Word of God. There
are many different opportunities to make the reading
of Scripture a part of your daily life. On page … of
the Reporter there are several options to embrace.
Pick an option that you can accomplish without
giving up. Fr. Michael Schmitz has a daily podcast
with him reading Scripture with a short reflection. It
lasts 20 minutes and you will finish meditating on the
entire Bible in one year! How cool is that?! By the
way, this particular podcast by Fr. Michael Schmitz
is the number one podcast in the United States right
now.

We are all searching for happiness, which in
spiritual terms, means a union with the Holy Trinity:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. At Christmas we
celebrated the Father sending the Word who is Jesus.
The Scriptures, through the movement of the Holy
Spirit leads us to Jesus, to be with Jesus who will
guide us back to Father. Embarking on and
embracing the New Year challenge of reading
Scripture I believe we can find our way to true
happiness that St. John Newman spoke of.

Will you take the challenge? Move forward in
confidence and just say yes!

All the best,

Fr. Jim Bilot

Note: Fr. Tom Slowinski had
“shoulder replacement reversal
surgery” on January 5
th
. He is
now recovering at his home. In
a couple of weeks he will begin
physical therapy. He will be out
for approximately four months.
Please keep him in prayer.
BLESSINGS ON THIS NEW YEAR

Join us for a Year of Saint Joseph!

On December 8
th
, 2020, on the 150
th
anniversary of the declaration of Saint Joseph as Patron of
the Universal Church, the Holy Father declared a ‘Year of Saint Joseph” that will be in effect until
December 8
th
, 2021. Pope Francis’ new Apostolic Letter, Patris corde, (“With a Father’s Heart”)
describes Saint Joseph as a beloved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient father, an ac-
cepting father, a father who is creatively courageous, a working father, a father in the shadows.
The letter was written amidst the backdrop of the covid19 pandemic, and speaks to the importance
of “ordinary” people exercising great patience, without being in the spotlight.

How can we become more like Saint Joseph?
Each month we will be looking at one of Saint Joseph’s virtues or examples to see if we, like
Saint Joseph, can quietly play an important role in the history of salvation in our families, work-
places, neighborhoods and beyond.
For the first month, we will look at Saint Joseph as the Most Valiant Protector of the Church. The
Holy Family was the entire Church and under Saint Joseph’s care and protection, entrusted to and
by his wit, obedience and sacrifice as he valiantly defended them. God is entrusting you to be a
valiant protector of your domestic church (your church at home) as well as your local and wider
church. What does that mean for you in terms of using your wit, being obedient and making sacri-
fices? Pray and ask the Lord for His guidance and courage to act on it.

Prayer to Saint Joseph
To you, O blessed Joseph,
do we come in our tribulation,
and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse,
we confidently invoke your patronage also.

Through that charity which bound you
to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God
and through the paternal love
with which you embraced the Child Jesus,
we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance
which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood,
and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities.
O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family,
defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ;
O most loving father, ward off from us
every contagion of error and corrupting influence;
O our most mighty protector, be kind to us
and from heaven assist us in our struggle
with the power of darkness.

As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril,
so now protect God's Holy Church
from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity;
shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection,
so that, supported by your example and your aid,
we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness,
and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven.
Amen.

SCRIPTURE
CHALLENGE
Take the Scripture Challenge!
Have you always wanted to read the Bible but don’t know where to start? Have you ever gotten started
but can’t seem to continue or you lose interest somewhere along the way? Have trouble understanding
what you are reading?
Here are several different suggestions on ways to read, listen to, pray and meditate on Holy Scripture:
Find the daily Catholic Mass scripture readings at www.usccb.org under the “Daily Readings” head-
ing. Take the time to read, reflect and meditate on the Holy Scriptures. This is can also make a big
difference on your experience at Mass to help you have greater understanding and meaning and
time of prayer. The usccb also has a list of approved Catholic Bibles on their website (under the Bi-
ble search tab).
Take the challenge and listen to Fr. Mike Schmitz’s “The Bible in a Year” podcast, currently the #1
podcast in the United States. For only 20/25 Minutes each day, you will hear Fr. Mike read scripture,
provide a reflection, helping you to allow the Word of God to soak in and allow God to speak to you.
There is also an introduction to certain portions of the Bible provided by Jeff Cavins to give an over-
view making it easier to understand. To subscribe, search and download on your favorite podcast
app or visit www.ascensionpress.com and sign up.
Join the Archdiocese of Detroit’s “Run So As to Win the Race” Grow Year Scripture Challenge.
Choose from 6 different reading plans for families and adults based on various commitment levels…
there is something for everyone! To sign up, visit https://www.unleashthegospel.org/scripture-
challenge/
Watch a short (5-6 minute) video reflection on the Sunday readings by visiting the Formed Catholic
digital platform. You’ll also find a weekly prayer journal you can download for free for further reflec-
tion and prayer. Go to www.Formed.org , enter “St. Paul on the Lake” and enter your email address.
In the search bar, enter “Opening the Word”. The website is free for St. Paul parishioners, and has
other valuable resources for reading, contemplating and praying on the Word of God as well as oth-
er ways to help you grow in your faith for adults, teens and children.
There is something for everyone…now is a great time to start!! Ask a friend or family member to join
you! If you have any questions, email [email protected].

LETHAL “COMPASSION”:
THE LIE OF EUTHANASIA
ASSISTED SUICIDE

Canadian columnist Andrew Coyne once observed that “A
society that believes in nothing can offer no argument even
against death. A culture that has lost its faith in life cannot
comprehend why it should be endured.”

Our culture is indeed profoundly confused about the
meaning and importance of life. St. John Paul II identified a
“culture of death” that maintains that life has value only if it is
productive and pleasurable. As St. John Paul II explains, this
culture sees death as a “rightful liberation” for those whose lives
are deemed to be no longer meaningful. Hence inflicting death
becomes the compassionate “fix” for suffering.

For example, a 2015 survey of Dutch physicians found, of the
almost 1,500 responses, that 31% of primary care physicians and
25% of elderly care physicians would grant euthanasia for
patients with advanced dementia, while 37% and 43%,
respectively would grant euthanasia for those with psychiatric
problems.

The Catholic Church teaches that life is the gift of a loving
God a gift over which we have stewardship but not
absolute dominion. As the Vatican Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith has said, “nothing and no one can in any
way permit the killing of an innocent human being, whether a
fetus or an embryo, an infant or an adult, an old person, or one
suffering from an incurable disease, or a person who is dying,”
We have no right “to ask for this act of killing” for ourselves or
for those entrusted to our care (Declaration on Euthanasia,
1980).

Moreover, enshrining euthanasia/assisted suicide as a legitimate
“choice” in law threatens vulnerable people, including the
elderly, persons with mental and physical disabilities, and those
with terminal illnesses.

As St. John Paul II observes, “Euthanasia is one of those
tragedies caused by an ethic that claims to dictate who should
live and who should die. Even if it is motivated by sentiments of
a misconstrued compassion or of a misunderstood
preservation of dignity, euthanasia actually eliminates the
person instead of relieving the individual of suffering.”

“Assisted dying” is based on a false concept of human life, and
of its worth and dignity. Life, as St. John Paul II reminds us,
must always be protected from conception to natural death.

St. Mother Teresa please pray that we respect, protect
and cherish human life from conception to natural death.

ST. PAUL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
SCHOOL NEWS

Blessing of the Classrooms
“Chalking the Door”

On January 5, 2021 Fr. Jim and Fr. Colin teamed up to bless all
of the classrooms at St. Paul School.

What is “Chalking the Door”?
“Chalking the door” is a sign and symbol of asking God’s
blessing upon those who live, work, or visit throughout the
coming year. In Exodus, the Israelites marked their doors with
blood so that the Lord would pass over their homes; but in this
service, we mark our doors with chalk as a sign that we have
invited God’s presence and blessing into our homes.
In Deuteronomy 6:9 God tells the people of Israel: “These
words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You
shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of
them when you sit in your house… You shall write them on the
doorposts of your house and on your gates.” Chalking the door
is a tangible way to honor God in our lives.

Using chalk, wr ite on the outside of your house or inside
above the front main entrance, above or next to an entrance:
+20 Christus Mansionem Benedicat 21+ or +20 C M B 21+
Pray: Lord God of heaven and ear th, you revealed your
only begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star.
Bless this classroom and all who work here and all who visit.
May we be blessed with health, kindness of heart, gentleness
and the keeping of your law. Fill us with the light of Christ,
that our love for each other may go out to all. We ask this
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The letters C M B come from the traditional names for the
three kings: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. It is also an
abbreviation for “Christus Mansionem Benedicat” which
means, “May Christ bless this dwelling!” The first and last
numbers simply refer to the current year.

Just before Christmas, the second graders had a special story hour with Fr.
Colin, where he talked about the traditions he enjoyed with his family. Fr. Colin
shared some funny stories about what he and his sisters would do as children during
the Christmas season. The students were excited to share how many of their family
traditions were similar in many ways.

Fr. Colin and the children discussed the true meaning Christmas, including how
Mary said "Yes" to the Angel Gabriel, and how Joseph truly accepted what was told
to him by faith. The class concluded with Fr. Colin sharing one of his favorite
Christmas storybooks, which told the story of Christmas from the Annunciation
through the Birth of Christ. It was really a sweet time shared by our future First
Communicants and Fr. Colin.
