A note from the Pastor...

Dear St. Gabriel Family,

I write to you from the 2021 Annual Meeting for the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. As a member of this order, our mission is to strengthen the practice of Christian life in absolute fidelity to the Supreme Pontiff and according to the teachings of the Church, observing as its foundation the principles of charity which make the Order a fundamental means of assistance to the Holy Land. I am blessed to be able to pray for you and my parish family. While I am unable to be with you this weekend, I would like to continue our Eucharist Initiative, which began with the series of three sermons shared by our entire Catholic community here in San Diego, by reflecting on the profound beauty of the Mass. I recently read a book titled The Splendour of the Liturgy by Maurice Zundel, a Swiss theologian. Over the next several weeks I hope to share with you excerpts from this text that give us little hints into the wonders of the sacred Mass. In his preface, Zundel writes: “This book seeks to make men see the light which illumines her [the Church’s] countenance and the dream of Beauty glowing in it, and seeing them, recognize her as the dwelling-place of the Spirit and the Bride of the Lord.” The book delves into each portion of the Mass, both the liturgical rubrics as well as the sacred meaning that infuses our actions. Over the next three weeks, we will be splitting the Mass into three parts and carefully studying and reflecting on each portion. I encourage you to take this as an opportunity to further your own personal appreciation and reverence for the Mass. One of the things that Zundel focuses on in his theology, and something that is so often missing in modern culture, is a sense of awe. I would like our St. Gabriel’s family to rediscover, rekindle, and fully embrace a sincere awe for our Lord and our God. There is no more sure sign of our belief in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist than our unbridled awe for the gift. Think for a moment of the things that inspire awe in us... a shooting star that streaks across the night sky or a beautiful voice whose song touches one’s very soul. We are awed by majestic beauty. Now imagine a miraculous healing that restores a loved one to health. Imagine a crippled, lame little boy suddenly throwing down his crutches and running for the first time, past you and down the aisle, straight into his mother’s open arms... breath-taking awe. We are awed by supernatural power. At every single Mass that we attend, the God of the universe becomes present under the appearance of bread and wine, and He becomes one with us. At every Mass we are each made holy to carry the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ. We are transformed in holiness to become ever more conformed to Christ. Every single one of us – isn’t that so much more than the stars and the songs and the bodily healings? At Mass, Christ’s holiness streams down the aisle in each one of us. What a massive miracle! The Eucharist, the source and summit of our Christian lives, is life changing. That should truly take our breath away. If we fully recognized the gift of the true presence, a conforming, transforming and salvific holiness, we would fall to the ground overcome with awe. Let us see Christ on the altar, in our hands, on our tongues, and in our souls. Let us be filled with awe. I pray that as we continue to study the Eucharist and the Mass, we rediscover our sense of awe. In His Service, Very Reverend Michael Froidurot If we think about the many healings in the Gospel narratives, we can only imagine how awe-struck we would be if we were physically present for these encounters. Can you imagine watching the man born blind regain his sight? Can you imagine being the man born blind? The physical and transformative healing would have

This Sunday’s Readings First Reading: Genesis 2: 18-24

The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him." So the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man. So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said: "This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called 'woman, ' for out of 'her man’ this one has been taken." That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 128: 1-2, 3, 4-5, 6

R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. Blessed are you who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways! For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork; blessed shall you be, and favored. R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home; your children like olive plants around your table. R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. The LORD bless you from Zion: may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. May you see your children's children. Peace be upon Israel! R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. , and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one’s need.

Second Reading: Hebrews 2: 9-11

Brothers and sisters: He "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels,"that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering. He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them “brothers.”

Gospel: Mark 10: 2-16

The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them. to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were

¡Paz a Israel!

Connect! Sunday Reflection from LPI “This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” Ten years ago, I wasn’t brave enough for Genesis, chapter two. While thumbing through my parish’s liturgical guide for wedding planning ahead of my 2012 nuptials, I remember my gaze falling on this Sunday’s first reading — the excerpt from the second chapter of Genesis. “Nope,” I thought. “Definitely not. Next, please.” The image of Eve crafted from the flesh of Adam has been so often misconstrued and misunderstood, both by those who would deny the equality

THE RIB OF ADAM AND THE BODY OF CHRIST

of the sexes and those who would accuse the Church of doing so. I was concerned with what the non-Catholics on my guest list would think of the Church (and, I will admit, of me) if words like “this one shall be called ‘woman,’ for out of ‘her man’ this one has been taken” were read aloud at my wedding. But a decade of marriage has shown me that this Scripture passage is not about subservience at all, but about belonging — and not just belonging within a marriage, but within the entire Body of Christ. The concept of belonging can be almost as controversial as sexism can. We don’t like to think that we belong to anyone else, that we need them and they need us. It’s not easy to need someone and to be needed in return. It’s inconvenient. Sometimes, it even feels undignified. The funny and wonderful thing about sacramental marriage is that it is a reflection, in miniature, of the human family itself. In the simple challenge of facing daily life at the side of your spouse, so much is revealed of how we interact with other people: how we live with them, how we love them, how we honor them and how we don’t. Marriage shows you the places of connection to other people that you didn’t even know existed. It’s a crash course in how the choices you make with your physical body — with your voice, with your actions or with the lack of them, with something as insignificant as the way your face looks when someone else is talking — can make another person feel safe, affirmed, and cherished. It can also make them feel threatened, offended, or degraded. Earlier this month, when the Supreme Court declined to block a Texas law banning abortions after the child has reached six weeks’ gestation, I saw my social media feeds erupt in a fight about ownership, autonomy, and responsibility. People everywhere pontificated on where one person ends and another begins. All this discourse made me think of Genesis. It made me think of what marriage and “the rib of Adam” has taught me about the human family. “This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” Marriage showed me how woefully inept I am at looking at any particular situation and thinking, before thinking anything else, “How can I ensure the good of the other? How can I best take care of this person?” Belonging, after all, brings with it accountability — another reason it can be an uncomfortable state. If I am flesh of my husband’s flesh, I must be concerned chiefly with his welfare. He must do the same. He and I must die to our own desires when they conflict with the good of the other. But I — and he — must do the same for the unborn child. We must do the same for that unborn child’s mother. We must do the same for the widow, the orphan, the refugee, the worker, the immigrant, the medically vulnerable, and the homeless veteran. As I said, I am woefully inept at it. But when I read Genesis, I see why I must keep praying for the grace to embrace the ways in which I belong to the other members of the Body of Christ, and the ways in which they belong to me.

“So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.” (Genesis 2:19)

The creation story reminds us of two important points. First, since the start, God has put the entire world into our care. Second, stewardship has been around since the beginning of mankind, it isn’t something recently invented by the Church. Just as past

generations built our Church, it is now our responsibility to continue to nurture and develop these gifts for future generations. ou r lives?

to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” (Matthew 16:26) St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.” We often forget this stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent, and treasure to gain more of the world’s riches. We need to set our priorities based on God’s values and not the values of the material world.

Your children also come to you first for faith. You set an example and show them the love and mercy of God in how you love them. Faith begins at home. Our Catechists here at Saint Gabriel, add to the faith-building you start at home. They spend hours preparing for class.
