MISSION STATEMENT

We are a Roman Catholic community. We are inspired by the

example of St. John Vianney to build up the Body of Christ. We are

fed by the Word and Sacraments to proclaim the Good News of

Jesus, to serve one another as Jesus did, and to invite others to join

us in the mission of Christ.

VISION STATEMENT

We seek to be a place where Jesus is known, not just known about;

a place where anyone can belong and anyone can make a

difference.

WEEKLY CATECHESIS

(Taken from the YOUCAT)

53. What is hell?

Our faith calls “hell” the condition of final separation

from God, the absolute “No” to love.

Jesus, who knows what hell is like, speaks about it as

the “outer darkness” (Mt 8:12). Expressed in our terms,

it is cold rather than hot. It is horrible to contemplate a

condition of complete rigidity and hopeless isolation

from everything that could bring aid, relief, joy, and

consolation into one’s live.

54. What are angels?

Angels are pure spiritual creatures of God who have

understanding and will. They have no bodies, cannot

die, and are usually not visible. They live constantly in

God’s presence and convey God’s will and God’s pro-

tection to men.

An angel, wrote Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, is “so to

speak the personal thought with which God is turned

toward me”. At the same time the angels are turned

completely toward their Creator. They burn with love

for him and serve him day and night. Their song of

praise is never-ending. In Sacred Scripture the angels

who have fallen away from God are called devils or

demons.

55. Can we interact with angels?

Yes. We can call on angels for help and ask them to

intercede with God.

Every person receives from God a guardian angel. It is

good and sensible to pray to one’s guardian angel for

oneself and for others. Angels can also make them-

selves noticeable in the life of a Christian, for example,

as bearers of a message or as helpful guides. Our faith

has nothing to do with the false angels of New Age

spirituality and other forms of esotericism.

56. Does man have a special place in creation?

Yes. Man is the summit of creation, because God creat-

ed him in his image (Gen 1:27).

The creation of man is clearly distinguished from the

creation of other living things. Man is a person, which

means that through his understanding and will he can

decide for or against love.

CROSS CATHOLIC OUTREACH

Father Bernard Olszewski will be visiting our parish next

weekend to speak at all the Masses on behalf of Cross Cath-

olic Outreach which was founded to create a meaningful

link between parishes in America and the priests and nuns

working in the Church overseas in the Caribbean Africa,

Asia, Central and South America.

Dear Friends,

Thanks so much for coming to Mass today!

Over the years, and thanks to many great people who influenced my spiritual life, I have grown very close to Our Lady.

Some months ago, a friend who I attended the seminary in Italy with was telling me that in his work he encounters no small

number of challenges. He explained further that he had, in the past year, started directly and expressly entrusting the things

before him to Our Lady, and he was increasingly finding most everything started unfolding better than he could have ex-

pected.

After our conversation, I decided to be more intentional about doing the same thing. I have found that just saying to Mary in

a little prayer, “Mother, I need you to take care of this or that for me”, and directly giving things over to her, most everything

seems to unfold in a way that is at least positive, and more often even better than I could have hoped.

Mary is a Mother, and she’s our Mother, thanks to the kindness of Jesus from the cross. Personally, I feel she is my greatest

ally in life. She is the most powerful and influential person in history, next to Jesus. It is love, humility, generosity and kind-

ness that have made her so. I pass on the recommendation of my friend, to put things in her hands.

Here’s one of my favorite prayers to her:

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help,

or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to

thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in

thy mercy hear and answer me.

Amen.

Many blessings to all of you this week!

Fr. Mark

First Saturday’s with the Saints

As announced last week at Masses, I’ll be offering a new opportunity for everyone to learn about the Saints. The stories of

the lives of the Saints is one of the greatest inspirational sources I have encountered. Beginning in October, each First Satur-

day of the month, we will have a simple Mass without a homily at 8:00 A.M. Immediately following Mass, I’ll give a 30-35-

minute talk about one of the Saints. The program will end not later than 9:15 A.M. In the weeks ahead I’ll let you know

which Saints lives we’ll be focusing on in the year ahead. All are welcome to join and take inspiration from the lives and

witness of our brothers and sisters, the Saints.

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SAINT JOHN VIANNEY

RCIA

My RCIA thoughts:

I was not raised Catholic, but started practicing when I was about 20 years old, when a friend took me to a Catho-

lic Church and I began to go there regularly. I went to church every week, was baptized and considered myself a

Catholic. I was married in a Catholic church in Buffalo and continued to “practice” the faith.

Flash forward several years later, and we have a young son, who is now attending Religious Education at St. John

Vianney. I had a nagging feeling that I needed to do more when it came to my faith. I saw a notice for RCIA

classes in the SJV Bulletin and decided to go through the process. They were led by Deacon Maloney and Diane

Bernard. I found them to be interesting and I looked forward to going each week. Sometimes there were guest

speakers and other times those who had been through the process would come and talk about their experience.

During the process, I could tell I was doing what was right for me and to help make my family more complete

when we went to mass together.

At the end of the process, during Holy Week, I attended a retreat and mass on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and

during Easter Weekend. It was at the Easter Vigil that I made my confirmation and my First Communion. It

made me very happy and I felt more at peace with my faith life.

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Prince of Peace wants to set the world on fire? This Sunday's Gospel can sound more intense than what we may be ac-

customed to. It's a passage of contradictions. Jesus so clearly prays for unity, yet here he speaks of division. Why would our

God who comes as an offering of love speak so frankly about causing relationships to be torn apart?

The sobering truth is that Jesus is divisive. We see this throughout the Gospels, as the Pharisees critique him, the Romans

condemn him, and not everyone in the crowd is enthusiastic about his words. Jesus has not come for the purpose of dividing,

but what he does is so radical that it upends the status quo. And it doesn't end with his preaching and miracles! "There is a

baptism with which I must be baptized." Jesus isn't talking about his baptism at the Jordan River, which has already oc-

curred, but the passing through the waters of death on the Cross and rising again to new life in the resurrection. This is divi-

sive stuff! Christ's spiritual fire turned the "fathers" - the Jewish people and Pharisees - against the "sons" - the common

people. Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants to be set on fire with the desire to love oth-

ers. Some prefer to put on a warm sweater and curl up in front of the TV.

In living and loving as Jesus did, we, too, might ruffle some feathers. In disciplining our teenage child for sneaking out, we

may cause some division (temporarily, we hope!). In standing up to gossip and the spread of cruel rumors in our workplace,

we might cause division. In emphasizing the dignity of both the desperate mother and the unborn child, we might cause divi-

sion. Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants the Gospel we are invited to live. But that's no

excuse not to live it.
