PA STOR ’S COLU M N
I always find Palm Sunday to be such a jarring experience. We begin
with a procession marking Jesus’ triumphant entrance into
Jerusalem, waving palm branches and singing “Hosanna! Blessed is
he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Then, mere moments later
in the reading for the Passion we are shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” What an abrupt change! And so
it must have seemed for Jesus Himself nearly two-thousand years ago. People are fickle. We are fickle. As
much as we say we want to welcome Jesus into our hearts and lives, there is still a part of us that would
rather go about our way undisturbed.
We mistakenly think that somehow God wants to limit our freedom, when in fact He is the author of
our freedom. Without Him we are slaves to our sins and selfish desires, slaves to a material world in which
nothing is ever enough. In the end, as St. Teresa of Ávila says, “God alone is sufficient,” and we are happiest
and most free in right relation with Him. This is why Jesus came, suffered, died, and rose.
The challenge and the opportunity of this week will be to walk with Jesus from the gates of the city,
to the garden of Gethsemane, through the streets to Calvary, to the tomb, and ultimately to the true freedom
of the Resurrection. To be a Christian means to be marked “soul deep” by these events, which we sum up as
the “Paschal Mystery.” I hope that you can participate in as much as possible this Holy Week in the various
liturgies we will be celebrating, or at the very least that you can make some extra time for personal prayer
and reflection.
Monday, for the first time in two years, the priests and deacons of the Diocese will gather with the
bishop here at Sacred Heart Cathedral for the Chrism Mass. At this Mass Bishop Zinkula will bless the Oil of
the Sick (used in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick), the Oil of Catechumens (used just prior to
baptism for infants and for those older children or adults enrolled in the catechumenate), and he will
consecrate the Sacred Chrism (used to anoint the newly baptized, for the Sacrament of Confirmation, for the
dedication of churches and altars and in the ordination of priests). It is also at this Mass each year that the
priests renew their promises in the service of the Church. While the time of the Chrism Mass this year
(2:00 pm) may not be the most convenient for peoples’ work schedules, I hope that many will still be able to
join us for this powerful liturgy. Please make note of the other times listed in the bulletin for the Triduum
and Easter liturgies this week.
Lastly, on a personal note, please know that you, the people of the parish, will be in my prayers in a
special way throughout this week. I feel so blessed to be here and am looking forward to my first Triduum
and Easter with you!

STEWARDSHIP
In the Gospel story of the first Palm Sunday we
hear that the owners of the ass had only
to be told, “The Master has need of it,” to give
the animal gladly. Do I give as readily to

DEACON DAN’S CORNER
“This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.” Lk 22: 19
I was struck by a news report this past week on an American citizen that was captured in Ukraine and brought into Russia. When asked by the reporter about his experience, he could have focused on the cruelty on parade within Ukraine. That seemed to be where the reporter wanted him to go with his answers. Instead, he chose to
highlight the good he experienced by a litany of people within Russia who risked much, so that he could be able to go home again.
How far are you willing to go to help a complete stranger? If you think about it, our Rice Bowl discipline only risks a little bit of time in intentional prayer, a little bit of fasting and sharing a little bit of money to help feed a hungry person. This man’s helpers were different. Some of this man’s helpers risked imprisonment and death in order to get him home safely. Some people are willing to die to protect a spouse, child or family member. Some are willing to die for their country, or to save the life of one of their comrades. Some are willing to die for a cause. What are you willing to die for?
Each year the Church takes this Sunday to proclaim the entirety of the passion narrative. The story is filled with images of complete darkness, violence, deception, cowardice, and wickedness and cruelty on a scale that we just can’t relate to. If our eyes, ears and attention are focused on these darker moments, we can lose sight of the good that the story contains. This is a love story that shows the depths to which God will go to save a wayward people to be able to come home again.
In John’s gospel Jesus told his disciples that “Greater love has no one than this, that a person will lay down his life for his friends.” In Luke’s passion narrative that we hear this weekend, we are reminded that our Savior laid down his life for many souls, including yours and mine. This is the love that the Church turns its attention to. It does so in hopes that we will be reminded of all that God has done for us, and all God continues to do in a world that sometimes is dark and scary.
How easy it is to profess a faith when we don’t see a cost. It is easy to say yes. It is easy to cheer and praise when there are no threats or challenges. In contrast how hard it is to say yes to the things that cost us financially, physically, and psychologically. Any of these situations can shake the foundations of what we really believe, and what we are willing to sacrifice for. But that’s exactly what so many people did for the young man entrapped in Russia. They brought light to the darkness around them. They helped bring a person home.
Today is actually a day that we give glory and praise to God because in Jesus, what seems like the end, really isn’t. Evil and darkness do not have the final word. Love has the final word. In Christ, that kind of love brings light to a world that sorely needs it. Jesus believed in self-giving love, that he was willing to sacrifice title, wealth, prestige, and earthly honors, so that we might be saved from our sins. What are you really willing to sacrifice in order to be more faithful in your discipleship? Consider bringing this to prayer.
Have a blessed Holy Week.

DIOCESAN CHRISM MASS April 11, 2:00 pm, Sacred Heart
You are invited to take part in one of the most special liturgies in the life of a
diocese—the Chrism Mass. At this liturgy, the bishop gathers the faithful of the
diocese—priests and deacons, religious and laity—around him for the blessing and
consecration of the oils that will be used in all our parishes in the coming year. Here
the Oil of the Sick, used to strengthen and console and heal those who are infirm, will be blessed. Here the Oil of Catechumens, used to strengthen and free those who are
preparing for baptism, will be blessed. Here the Sacred Chrism, used to ordain bishops and priests, to confirm, to anoint newly-
baptized infants, and to dedicate churches and altars, will be consecrated. And here, too, we will witness the Rite of Recommitment to Ministry by our priests. May our presence
at the Chrism Mass be a sign of our support and gratitude for their ministry—and a
reminder that baptism calls all of us to lives of service.
OPERATION RICE BOWL: Don’t forget to bring your Rice Bowl contributions to our Holy Thursday Mass at 7:00 pm. The collection on Holy Thursday goes to help the most vulnerable in our own community and across the globe. Baskets will be at each of the entrances during the Triduum and Easter weekend. Feel free to place your rice bowl in one of those baskets on your way into or out of church.
CONFIRMATION FORMATION Candidates for Confirmation will return for their
next session on Sunday, April 10, 4:00-5:30 pm, in the Gathering Space conference room.
Please contact Dcn Dan if you are unable to attend.

CLOTHING CENTER: "I was naked and you clothed me." Mt 25:36 We are reminded frequently of the three pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We practice almsgiving when we feel compassion for those in need and want to help. Most people automatically think of a financial contribution. But all of the corporal works of mercy are a form of almsgiving. At the Clothing Center, our emphasis is on clothing the naked. One of the authors of "The Little Black Book," daily prayer reflections for Lenten study, suggests buying something new to donate. She reminds us that when we give a gift to someone, it is something new, and she recommends we do the same for those in need. She likes to purchase one new clothing item to donate during Lent. A lovely, generous thought. During the last few weeks, we have shared many stories of generosity. Please know that whatever way you choose to support Minnie's, we are grateful. Contact info: 563-362-0915 or [email protected].

BẢN THÔNG TIN CỘNG ĐOÀN MẸ MÔNG TRIỆU
CHÚA NHẬT LỄ LÁ - NĂM C
Chúa Nhật Lễ Lá luôn
luôn cho tôi một cảm giác sốc
động. Chúng ta bắt đầu với một
cuộc rước Lễ,đánh dấu Chúa
Giêsu chiến thắng vào thành
Jerusalem, vẫy lá và hát bài
"Hosana!
tự do. Không có Ngài, chúng ta
là nô lệ của tội lỗi và những ham
muốn ích kỷ, nộ lệ cho vật chất
trong thế giới mà nó sẽ không
bao giờ thỏa mản chúng ta.
Cuối cùng, Thánh Teresa của
Avila nói, “Chỉ có không thôi là
đầy đủ rồi,” và chúng ta sẽ được
hạnh phúc và tự do nhất trong
mối liên hệ với Ngài. Đây là lý
do Chúa Giêsu đến, chịu khổ
