With the help of over 400 donors, our Brother Martin community of current and past parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, students, friends and donors raised over $65,506 in just 24 hours!

The funds raised for our first #GiveBrotherMartin day went to the Brother Martin Fund. Why the Brother Martin Fund?

The Brother Martin Fund allows our school to facilitate reasonable tuition for all families, attract and retain quality faculty, continue to initiate advancements in technology, accommodate a low student-teacher ratio, maintain a clean and orderly environment and provide an expanded curriculum that offers electives consistent with many college majors.

Throughout the #GiveBrotherMartin campaign, there was alumni and donor representation across the map with donations from Oregon, California, Hawaii, Colorado, Texas, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Our class leader board was neck-and-neck the whole campaign, but the Class of 1997 came out with the most donors and most funds raised for an alumni class. The Classes of 2008 and 2002 placed second and third respectively. The Classes of 1984 and 1990 placed second and third respectively for the most funds raised.

As we continue to build for the future, we thank you and we appreciate your support for our inaugural #GiveBrotherMartin campaign!

Brother Martin High School held its annual Fishing Rodeo on Saturday, June 2, 2018. It was a beautiful day for the gathering of alumni, families and friends of Brother Martin as participants competed for various titles in 15 categories.

The Captain’s Party held at Sportsbeat Pub & Cafe in Metairie kicked off the annual Rodeo earlier in the week. Fishermen and guests were able to register while they enjoyed complimentary food, beverages, and fishing tips. Participants were also able to pick up their complementary ditty bags and t-shirts.

The Class of ’73 Culinary Squad provided a delicious cuisine of fried fish, hush puppies, sno-balls and more. Team McCrossen, a four-time winner, took home the trophy for the Largest Two Redfish 27” & under. This was a new record for the team for they also had 13 spots on their redfish!

Adding to the event, the Brother Martin Cheerleaders walked around selling tickets for a 50/50 raffle of over $500, a “Big Board Raffle,” and a Parade of Prizes consisting of restaurant gift cards, Brother Martin metal art, a Brother Martin pirogue, and much more. The Brother Martin

THREE CLASSMATES CANOE THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER

Matthew Reineke ’14, Ben Hailey ’14 and Patrick Healy ’14 canoed the entire Mississippi River. They started their journey in the Headwaters of Itasca and paddled all the way to the Gulf. You can see their adventure on Instagram @RiverDudesNOLA.From casually kayaking in Bayou St. John to seriously canoeing the Mighty Mississippi, three alumni decided to have a summer they won’t repeat, but will never forget. Matthew

Reineke ‘14, the mastermind of the operation, was inspired by working on the Creole Queen Paddleboat. One of the guides continued to repeat on his tours that you can still canoe down the entire Mississippi. This sparked him to convince his two friends, Ben Hailey ‘14 and Patrick Healy ’14, to jump on board. The first challenge of their trip was their parents, who initially told them no. After much persuasion, watching videos, and a test canoe trip in Arkansas, the boys were given the green light. For the trip, they purchased a 19 ft., two-man canoe and a 14 ft. kayak. They also had waterproof food storage, tents and sleeping bags, and a 20-gallon fresh water container. They started their journey in Itasca, Minnesota where the Mississippi River is a little wider than the canoe. The River then goes into large lakes that the boys would have to paddle across. Sometimes it would take them a whole day of paddling to get across the lakes. Just outside of Minneapolis, they were stopped by the sheriff department. When they told the officers what they were doing they did not believe them. On the trip, they would post to social media groups dedicated to people kayaking the Mississsippi RIver. Those groups gave them access to places to stay along the journey. After 8 weeks and 12 hours a day of paddling, the boys popped a bottle of champagne in the Gulf of Mexico. When asked about the things they missed on this trip, they responded with, “AC, no bugs, and beds without sand.” Matt, Ben, and Patrick agreed it was the best experience they ever had, but they are never doing it again.

Andy Bourgeois (SA ’56) shocked the new Brother Martin community by resigning as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach after just one year. In June, 1970, he took the position of Freshman Football Coach at Tulane. The new principal, Brother Brice Hendrick, S.C. (SA ’53), split Andy’s positions between two people. Brother Kieran Dugas, S.C., became the Athletic Director while Bob Conlin moved up from Assistant Football Coach to head man.Bob continued his predecessor’s policies and procedures, including the minute-by-minute daily practice schedules that Andy learned as one of Paul Dietzel’s Chinese Bandits at LSU and the “Power I” offense. Bob’s staff included his brother Dan, Chubby Marks, Pat Morris, V. J. Gianelloni, Barry Poche, and Rod Krentel.Conlin’s first Crusader team won five straight games before falling to Holy Cross 13-12. After easy wins over Redemptorist and Archbishop Shaw, the Saders lost their last two contests to St. Augustine (41-13) and Jesuit (30-24).Their 7-3 record didn’t get them into the LHSAA playoffs but did earn an invitation to the Miracle Strip Bowl in Fort Walton Beach FL where they were beaten by the host Choctawhatchee (FL) Big Green Indians 20-0.With numerous juniors and sophomores returning, prospects looked bright for the ’71 Crusaders. Since the defense would be as solid as anyone’s, a district championship loomed as a distinct possibility if the offense could hold up its end of the bargain. The season got off to an auspicious start against Kennedy in the slop at Tad Gormley Stadium. Sparked by LB Pete Farnet’s touchdown on a pass interception return, the Crusaders won 16-0.The schedule called for an early season meeting with the Blue Jays. The team reached an emotional peak too early in the week, resulting in a very uninspired performance. Jesuit reversed the score from the previous week, winning 16-0. After such a disappointing loss, no one would have predicted that the Crusaders would not lose another game the rest of the season.Dissatisfied with his offense, Bob made a change he had contemplated for some time. An admirer of coach “Bear” Bryant, who converted from the “T Formation” to the “Wishbone” at Alabama, Conlin unveiled his version of the wishbone against Abramson the following week. The result was a 25-6 romp, which included a 99y drive culminated by senior HB Steve Treuting’s 1y plunge. The Crusaders showed the next week against Rummel that a team can pass effectively out of the wishbone. With the Raiders geared to stop the ground attack, junior QB Joey Mattingly passed for three TDs to 6’5” senior TE Kenny Bordelon. Final score: Martin 27 Rummel 7A defensive battle ensued against De La Salle. After three scoreless periods, Treuting’s 5y run late in the game gave the Crusaders a 6-0 victory. The Crimson and Gold defense pitched its third shutout of the young season against Chalmette, the only public school in the Catholic League. 20 points were more than enough to secure the victory. The streak of scoreless quarters ended early against Holy Cross. The Tigers led 6-0 until 48 seconds remained in the contest. Mattingly hit senior WB Andre Allen with a 28y aerial for the tie, and Darryl Brue calmly added the PAT for a

heart-stopping 7-6 triumph.Despite an obvious letdown after an emotional victory, Conlin’s crew managed to eke out a 12-7 victory over the pesky Redemptorist Rams. The Mattingly-Bordelon connection produced the first TD in the closing seconds of the first half. Then sophomore RB Owen Riemer raced 62y in the final stanza to secure the win.Treuting scored on a 67y punt return and a 34y scamper in the fourth shutout victory, this one over Shaw 19-0 at Hoss Memtsas Stadium. The 8-1 Crusaders entered the regular season finale against St. Augustine needing a win or tie to maintain their chances of making the state playoffs. The Purple Knights, fresh off a 17-0 thumping of Holy Cross, rested their hopes on the passing arm of QB Keith Pete and the running of Ray Lation.

The best way to stifle a passing game is to put pressure on the QB, and that’s what Chubby Marks’s front line did, dropping Pete for substantial losses. In a replay of the De La Salle game, the fourth quarter began with goose eggs on the scoreboard for both sides. Finally, Treuting gave the Saders marvelous field position with a 27y punt return. Three plays later, he bolted into the end zone from the 3 for the game’s only TD. The 7-0 triumph gave Brother Martin its first district championship. The playoffs began with the fifth and sixth shutouts of the season by a defense that boasted nine future college players. In a rematch with Kennedy, Riemer’s 47y jaunt produced the only score.A trip to Houma resulted in a 14-0 whitewashing of South Terrebonne. Allen opened the game with an 82y kickoff return, and the heralded defense did the rest. The second half began with senior DE Steve Mallerich dropping on a fumble at the Gators’ 6. Treuting did the honors three plays later behind the blocking of junior Gary Oser and seniors Paul Lanaux, and Tom Wischer.

Because they traveled in the second round, the Crusaders hosted Neville from Monroe in a semifinal matchup at East Jefferson Stadium. The Tigers fielded a defense almost as good as Martin’s. So guess what: another 0-0 battle midway through Q4 on a field made slick by rains earlier in the day. BM got a break when a Tiger punt traveled only 14y into the strong wind. Starting from the Neville 41, Mattingly twice connected with E Scooter Parris in between runs by Treuting and Riemer to keep the march alive. The first completion came on 4th-and-4 at the 22. The second gained 5y to the 2. Steve dove over from there with 5:15 on the clock. Brue’s PAT made it 7-0, a seemingly insurmountable lead with so

little time left the way the Martin defense was playing. The odds of a Crusader victory increased when LB Don Angle recovered a fumble on the Neville 43 on the first play from scrimmage after the kickoff. That gave Martin the opportunity to at least run some clock or force the Tigers to use their remaining timeouts. After a punt into the end zone, Neville started from its 20 with less than two minutes remaining. Needing big plays, Charley Brown’s club got them. QB Dennis Surratt took the first snap and sped 36y on a keeper to the BM 44. After a screen pass gained 8, a fluke play nearly cost the Crusaders the game. Surratt found E Les Loper running a crossing pattern over the middle. S Pat Dearie came up to make the tackle, but his feet slipped out from under him on a wet spot, and he watched

Henry Nuss, Darryl Brue, and Tommy Wichser celebrated the TD against Neville.

on his backside as Loper raced past him to the end zone with 0:54 on the clock. The TD not only brought the Tigers within one point of the Crusaders but gave them a tenth first down to nine for Martin. With no provision for overtime, Coach Brown could kick the PAT to tie and hope his defense could keep the Crusaders from gaining another first down. But the problem with that strategy was that he had no kicker. All season long, the Tigers had gone for two. So that’s what he ordered.Surratt took the snap, faked to his right, then rolled left and made a beeline for the pylon. But MLB Farnet met him just inside the sideline at the one. An arm tackle might have allowed the runner to reach the ball over the goal. But Pete drove his shoulder into Surrat and, with the aid of several teammates who arrived a split second later, drove him sideways out of bounds to preserve the lead.Junior G Tim Oster fell on the onside kick to allow the Crusaders to run out the clock. The hard-earned 7-6 victory set up an all-Catholic-league AAAA final with St. Augustine, who had beaten Captain Shreve 6-0 that same evening at Gormley. After the rock ‘em sock ‘em 7-0 Crusader victory over the Purple Knights to end the regular season, fans had every right to expect another defensive struggle, especially the way the two teams had bottled up their North Louisiana opponents in the semis. But only half of that expectation came to pass before a crowd of 24,000 that filled the horseshoe in City Park. The tone was set by a defensive end on St. Aug’s first two possessions. Pete dropped a screen pass to Lation who sped 28y to the 48 where junior LB Henry Nuss made the tackle. Three plays later, facing 3rd-and-8, Pete faded to pass but was clobbered by all 5’9” 165 lbs of Mallerich for an 11y loss to force a punt. But a fumble recovery soon put the Knights back in business at their 48. Mallerich struck again on 3rd-and-9. Bordelon joined him to dump the QB onto the muddy turf 14y behind the line of scrimmage.Pete’s problems continued when Farnet intercepted a pass on the last play of the opening period to put the ball on the SA 23 after a face mask penalty. Mattingly surprised the defense with a first down pass to Riemer for 12. Then Treuting smashed up the middle to the 2. On the next snap, Steve followed FB

Marc Robert to pay dirt. 7-0 Brother Martin. In the final minutes of the half, Mattingly worked the clock masterfully during a scoring march that started at the BM 44. After one first down, the drive seemed to have stalled as the Crusaders lined up to punt on the SA 38. But a long count drew a defender offside to move the chains. With Treuting split wide right to spread the defense, the junior QB scampered 18y up the middle to the 15, where he called timeout as soon as he hit the ground to stop the clock with just one second left. Time enough for Brue to bang through a 32y FG to make it 10-0 at the break.Crusader pressure produced another turnover on the Big Purple’s second possession of Q3. Back to pass, Pete was blindsided by Bordelon, causing the ball to bloop to Brue on the SA 22. Four runs placed the pigskin on the 4 as the period ended. Treuting’s 3y run made it 17-0 after Darryl’s conversion. With the crimson defense in complete control, the outcome was no longer in doubt. Mattingly’s 4y TD run made the final score 23-0. St. Aug thus joined Kennedy as 1971 opponents who couldn’t score on Brother Martin in eight quarters.Coach Otis Washington, who would lead St. Aug to three state championships from 1975-79, said his team was “keyed too high” and “played lousy.” But he added, “You can’t take a thing away from this Brother Martin team. They took advantage of every mistake, like a good team should.”Coach Conlin spoke like a man who had the weight of the world lifted off his shoulders. “We didn’t do anything different from the first time we met. There’s no sense in changing when you’ve come this far on a successful season. It’s just a question of a team with everyone concerned doing their job.”After 47 years, which have seen five trips to the state semifinals plus one to the finals, Brother Martin is still waiting for its second state football title.
