Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus!

Last Saturday, November 2, All Souls Day, we prayerfully remembered our deceased loved ones. We did well in praying for them. Tomorrow, Monday, November 11, we

celebrate Veterans Day. This is the day when we honor all the veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. This is a day to pray for them and a day to express our gratitude for their service to our country. God knows how we need His help and the help of our service men and women to protect us from harm.

This past week, there were several important events in the parish. On Saturday, November 2, we had a leadership training session with Sister Donna Ciangio (She is a Dominican Sister of Caldwell who is the director of Church Leadership Consultation and works nationally and internationally with parishes. She is also Chancellor of our Archdiocese.) The training was for those who are currently leading some ministries and groups in our parish. It was also for potential leaders identified by the parish staff. There will be more recruitment of potential leaders in the near future.

Last Sunday, November 3, the children in our Faith Formation program, together with their catechists and parents, had so much fun in the annual Family Faith Festival. They gathered in the Maria Room to pray and sing together, prepared meal packages and hygiene kits for a local homeless shelter, made get-well cards and flower arrangements for the sick, sent thoughtful notes to the seniors in nursing homes, decorated thanksgiving crafts, wrote prayer intentions and participated in other service projects such as cleaning outside the church and convent. This is such a great act of love by these children. They put into action what they learn from the School of Religion through the efforts of their catechists and parents.

The other happening this past week was a sad one. We bid goodbye to a well-loved, very good and faithful servant of God and our dear brother, Deacon Nick Fargo. You can read a little write up about him on the cover of this bulletin. He will surely be missed. Our prayers go out for the repose of his soul and for his remaining family. And for those of you who went to pay your respect to Deacon Nick, either at the wake service or funeral Mass, thank you so much from the bottom of my heart! May God bless us all! Love,

+ Father Marty

DO YOU LOVE GOD, DO YOU LIKE CHILDREN? If you answered YES to those questions, you might be the kind of person we are looking for to help us with our LITURGY OF THE WORD WITH CHILDREN. Each Sunday at our 12 Noon Mass, we have a special program for children in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. Just before the readings, the children are invited to our Daily Mass Chapel where adult volunteers share the readings and a reflection geared to their age and understanding. The children then return to the church during the collection and participate in the rest of the Mass with their parents.

We need additional adults to help with this program. We will provide you with the training and resources you need to help the children of our parish grow in their understanding of God’s life-giving Word. For more information, speak to Father Tom or email him ([email protected]) or call him at the parish office (201-434-7500, Ext 104)

IS YOUR MARRIAGE VALID? If you were married civilly, that is, not in the Catholic Church before a priest or deacon, it might not be a valid marriage. Some couples believe that a marriage before a Justice of the Peace or a non-Catholic minister is valid. For a marriage to be valid in the Catholic Church, the marriage must be in a Catholic Church or Chapel and officiated by an authorized Catholic priest or deacon along with 2 witnesses. (There are limited interfaith exceptions with proper permission.) We invite you to speak with one of our priests if there are any questions or if indeed you wish to validate your marriage. The process can be simple and your marriage will now be blessed by the Church.

ARE YOU EXPECTING? All Moms & Dads to be, our Baptismal Team would also like to celebrate your joy with a “Gathering To Rejoice!” Every month we have an event just for that. The team is ready to rejoice with you and to assist you as you look forward to your child‘s baptism and beyond. Let us know that your are expecting by stopping by or calling the parish office at 201-434-7500. Let‘s rejoice together!

JERSEY CITY TOGETHER – OLM LOCAL CHAPTER UPDATE & INVITATION

TO HELP ADDRESS PARKING ISSUES

September 16, the OLM Local Chapter of Jersey City Together (JCT) sponsored a meeting in the Maria Room to identify the issues of concern that residents feel need to be addressed in order to improve the quality of life in our area.

The top three issues identified by those at the meeting were (1) Foul Odors and Loud Noise Impacting Quality of Life. (2) Parking Problems at Specific Locations, Package and Mail Theft, Lack of Police Presence (3) Poor Response from Animal Control concerning racoons and other pests.

In response to these concerns the OLM Chapter of JCT is in the process of organizing a meeting tentatively set for Tuesday evening, December 3, at our parish. At the meeting we hope to have the following representatives present: the head of Animal Control, The South District Police Commander, the Director of the Department of Public Works, and the Director of the Parking Authority.

In preparation for the meeting of December 3, we would like to have volunteers walk through our neighborhood and identify areas where parking is especially difficult. Even more importantly those volunteers would identify areas that might be used or re-purposed in order to provide additional parking spaces. We need volunteers to walk the walk and take a look! Volunteers will meet at 10 am at OLM Church on Saturday, November 23, and then spend an hour walking through the neighborhood and identifying problems and possible solutions. The information gathered will then be presented to the appropriate city agencies.

Those who were at the meeting of September 16 will be contacted by email to help prepare for the December 3 meeting . If you are not contacted, or were not at the September meeting, and would like to be involved please send an email to [email protected]
