John J. Olshefski

PASTOR’S PEN ...a word from the heart

During this diocesan holy

year, I have joined other

priests in our area to explore

avenues of faith through a

forty week spiritual exercise

process. One of our primary

resources is a book about the

transforma!on journey. In

it, I read an examina!on of

self using The Decalogue of

God. You might also find it to be worthwhile. It is

good for us, I think, to regularly return to The Ten

Commandments as a basis for how we are fulfilling

God’s plan for us while on earth.

Here are some of the authors’ reflec!on ques!ons

star!ng with the First Commandment: In what ways

is God the center of my life? In what ways have I

displaced God’s central status with my career, social

life, wealth or pleasures? Does the honor of God take

shape in my weekly religious prac!ces of gra!tude,

prayer, and forgiveness?

The second and third decrees con!nue to reflect

upon our rela!onship with God. How do I speak

about God? Do I hold anger or hatred toward God in

my heart because of bad circumstances or horrible

tragedies that have occurred in my life? Do I honor

God in the words that come forth from my mouth?

Do I prepare myself for Sunday liturgies and make the

Lord’s Day a true !me of spiritual rejuvena!on and

rest? Do I allow re-crea!on to take place in my soul

or do I sprinkle most Sundays with other ac!vi!es and

events that do not give honor to the Lord?

With the fourth command, we switch from decrees

pertaining to the Lord to those that pertain to others,

star!ng with parents. Am I properly thankful for the

gi" of life and the ancestry that shaped me in so many

ways? Do I forgive the shortcomings of my parents or

hold grudges against them because of my make-up?

Am I pa!ent with their aging process or any infirmi!es

that they bear? How do I respond to their needs? For

deceased parents, how do I honor them in imita!on of

their good spirit and uphold their good name?

The fi$h decree challenges us to dignify life at every

age and stage and in every person. Have I ever

par!cipated in ac!ons that led to another’s death?

Have I piled-on in killing the spirit of another person?

In what ways do I overcome the prejudices that I bear

against other individuals or groups? Do I risk my life

or well-being by using drugs not meant for me? Do I

risk the life of others by driving recklessly or while

intoxicated? Do I strive to promote the value of

human life from concep!on to natural death? In what

ways do I support civil servants and poli!cians who

protect and promote abor!ons, euthanasia, capital

punishment, or other issues that destroy or diminish

life? Am I connected to other people in a way that I

am impacted to mourn the death of another—any

other human—and offer prayers for their soul?

The authors link the sixth and ninth commands, as

well as the seventh and tenth in unified examina!ons.

Do I understand and protect the covenant rela!onship

with my spouse and uphold its sacredness? Do I

encourage, support, and promote my spouse, or do I

compare him/her to others for depreca!ng purposes?

Do I seek emo!onal support or a%en!on from others

that I shouldn’t? Do I use pornography or denigrate

others’ integrity by exploi!ng physical appearance?

How do I cul!vate purity of heart and reverence

sexual intercourse in its proper place? Do I recognize

God’s crea!ve energy in the gi" of love or do I view

sex casually, inhibi!ng God’s loving expression?

Do I steal or cheat to a%ain the upper hand? Am I

honest in my investments, financial dealings, and

taxes, or do I use legal loopholes to take advantage?

Do I vandalize or harm the property of others? Do I

treat customers, co-workers, and neighbors with care

and respect or always seek ways to profit from them?

Do I let wealth and comfort take a central spot in my

life or do I help others with the gi"s I possess? Do I

respect the limited resources of the earth to the

benefit of all while minimizing waste and protec!ng

the environment? In what ways do I put my own

profits ahead of the welfare of crea!on and society?

The eighth decree calls us to live honestly and as

neighbors to one another. Do I uphold the honor of

other people’s reputa!ons? When I speak of others, is

it toward their benefit or do I seek and spread gossip

about them? Do I gravitate toward or seek to avoid

personali!es that are destruc!ve and malicious? Do I

a%empt to remove the plank in my own eye before

concerning myself with the splinter in another’s? Do I

have an honest heart?

Let these decrees ruminate within us.

STEWARDSHIP AT SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO

Are you 70 and ½ or older? Do you want to save federal and state income taxes? Giving directly from your IRA to a qualified charity like your parish, school, Annual Catholic Appeal, diocesan or parish ministry can be a tax-wise strategy. Please consult you legal or tax adviser or Laura Gray at the Office of Stewardship and Development at [email protected] or 816-714-2363. Gifts of this type satisfy your “required minimum distribution (rmd)” and will help you avoid paying income tax on whatever amount you transfer directly to charity.

Donating Securities and Mutual Funds Are some of your shares of stock or mutual funds higher than when you bought them? This provides you a wise method of giving to St. Charles Borromeo Parish. Donating appreciated stock or mutual fund shares is a strategic gift-planning method. In most cases, the donor receives an itemized deduction in the full amount of the fair market value (FMV) of the shares donated as of the date of the gift. This value is deductible up to 30% of the donor’s adjusted gross income and can be carried over for up to five years after the year of the gift. Please consult your financial or legal adviser.

July: $(2,673) YTD: $(2,673)

“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” (Luke 12:15)

The Gospel message today is contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle and become more “other-centered” and less “self-centered.”

Please join us in welcoming Rev. Lukasz Drozak, Redemptorist, who will speak on behalf of the Redemptorists ministries in Ukraine and Russia, this weekend, August 3/4. a

The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, Redemptorists, is a missionary congregation that ministers to the poor in more than 70 countries around the world. The area of the former Soviet Union is undoubtedly a place where many neglected people need help. Thanks to the efforts of Polish Redemptorists, we have been building the next church there. In front of us, there is the next project: the completion of the construction at the church and pastoral center in Togliatti - central Russia. We would like to express our deep gratitude to all of you for your prayers, kindness and support of our projects. Every day, we thank God in our prayers for all people of good will, their prayers, and generosity. May God Bless you all.

A Note of Gratitude from the Stark Family

“This book is a cry from the heart. I am a lifelong Catholic, and I’ve been a priest for thirty-three years and a bishop for four years. I have dedicated my life to the Church. The sexual abuse scandal has been for me, for millions of other Catholics, and especially for the victim-survivors, lacerating. I have written this book for my fellow Catholics who feel, understandably, demoralized, scandalized, angry beyond words, and ready to quit. What I finally urge my brothers and sisters in the Church to do is to stay and fight – and to do so on

behalf of themselves and their families, but especially on behalf of those who

have suffered so grievously at the hands of wicked men.”
