July 10 - FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 11 - Saint Benedict, Abbot July 13 - SaintHenry July 14 - Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, Virgin July 15 - Saint Bonaventure, Bishop, Doctor of the Church July 16 - OurLadyofMountCarmel

Saint Benedict the father of Western monasticism, built his own life of prayer and praise on the Word of God. He di-rected that all those who would follow in his footsteps, begin their daily prayer with Psalm 95 ACalltoPraiseandObeyGod, so that they might be reminded to keep open the "ear of the heart"; he died in 547. Magni icat Saint Henry was born in 972, he became the German em-peror in 1002 and Holy Roman Emperor in 1014; he en-couraged and supported Church reforms of priestly life; he died in 1024. Saint Kateri born in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon (Auriesville, New York); as a young girl, she lost her parents and brother to smallpox; moved by the preaching of Jesuit missionaries, she was baptized at the age of twenty, taking the name after Catherine of Siena; she died in 1680. Saint Bonaventure sought wisdom in God's revelation through prayer and study; he illed the hearts of others with the fruits of his learning through his work of teaching, and in wisdom he built up the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) through his leadership; he died in 1274. Magni icat Our Lady of Mount Carmel ...title is named for the lovely place where the Prophet Elijah dwelt in service to the word of God, expresses a sense of the beauty, silence, and prayer that characterize Mary, the Moth-er of our Redeemer. This feast, instituted by the Carmelite Order, commemorates the anniversary of the day in 1251 when the Blessed Mother gave the brown scapular to Saint Simon Stock. Brothers and Sisters,

On this 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time we gather together to listen to God’s word and celebrate the Eucha-rist. We look around and see many people and may ask the same ques on asked of Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus’ response has enormous implica ons for how we are called to relate to the world around us . In today’s first reading, Moses stresses that God’s will and love are “very near” (Dt. 30:14) as opposed to something “mysterious and remote” (Dt. 30:11). God has given us the “book of the law” (Dt. 30:10) but he has also placed it “in our mouths and in our hearts” (Dt. 30:14). Observance does not require strenuous external feats but hearts open to God’s will and ac ons that follow it. As expressed by St. Paul in our second reading from his le er to the Colossians, the perfec on of this love described in our first reading is realized in and through Jesus Christ. It is in Jesus that the fullness of what it means to live a selfless love is best exemplified through this selfless love. God reconciled everything on earth and in the heavens bringing peace to all. The law of love is not beyond our reach, for it was planted in us in bap sm. We know what we should do; we rely on God’s grace in following through. “Apeirogon” is the tle of a novel published in 2020 by the Irish writer Colum McCann. (The word apeirogon is the mathema cal term for “object of an observably infinite number of sides.”) The novel is inspired by the real-life friendship between two fathers from people historically, bi erly divided: Rami Elihanan, an Israeli and Basson Aramin, a Pales nian. They are united in grief by the loss of their young daughters: 13 year-old Smadar, killed by a Pales nian suicide bomber; and 10 year-old Abir, shot by a member of the Israeli army. Both fathers become members of the Parents Circle, a joint Israeli-Pales nian group of families who have lost children or close family members during the ongoing conflict. Both men commit to spending their lives sharing their stories and working for reconcilia on and a just and peaceful resolu on to the conflict. “This became their jobs: to tell the story of what had happened to their girls.” In today’s famous parable of the good Samaritan, Jesus selects a Samaritan as the hero. Jews regard Samaritans as enemies. Jesus is turning the social world upside down, challenging deep-seated feelings. It is the Samaritan who behaves as a loving neighbor even though he has no obliga on to do so. The priest and Levite, who are supposed to be examples of virtuousness reject the opportunity to show love and to be a good neighbor. The response to “Who is my neighbor?” is that everyone, includ-ing my enemy, is my neighbor. Jesus asks that we care about our neighbors with the same intensity that we care about our-selves. The command to love our neighbor is placed immediately a er the command to love God and it demands a serious effort to elevate the neighbor’s need to the same level as our own. Faithful

Christ Jesus . . . is the head of the body, the church. — Colossians 1:15, 18

RIGHT RELATIONSHIPS Our God is about relationships. In the irst reading, Moses reminds the Israelites that the laws, which are already in their hearts, keep them in right relationship with the God who loves them so much that they always ind forgiveness. Centuries later, along comes Jesus, whom Paul describes to the Colossians as “the image of the invisible God,” the very embodiment of this God of love. In his parable about the good Samaritan, Jesus explains how the law of love overrules the letter of the law. Instead of answering the question “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus demonstrates that it is not about who is worthy of being loved, but rather loving as God loves—about being neighbor, about being the good Samaritan. Jesus wants us to continue his work as images of this God of love by loving all people, even those who seem to be our enemies. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

VINCENTIAN CORNERVINCENTIAN CORNERVINCENTIAN CORNER In today’s Gospel, when Jesus asks “which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” the scholar of the law answered, “the one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus then said, “Go and do likewise.” This week you can also “treat the poor with mercy” by donating to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. If you know of someone that needs assistance, please have them call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at 951/684-7386 so that together we can continue to help those who are suffering.
