FROM THE PARK BencH

What you to play? This summer, ”What will inspire You to Play?” I find my answer on our eastern border. Forest Park and our beautiful lakefront are an integral part of my summer experiences. I am lucky enough to have memories as far back as I can and no, I won’t tell you how long it has been. They include sun-filled days and bonfire nights growing up with family and friends. My memories have been created by laughing and playing with my sons and now by utilizing the activities that the Parks and Recreation Department offer such as kayaking, sailing and paddle boarding. I have literally spent my youth and adulthood at this beautiful facility. How lucky am I?

When asked to describe my favorite aspect of the lakefront facility, I have a hard time answering. Honestly, I love every aspect of this facility. My words of advice are explore and discover!

When you approach the Forest Park Facility located at Deerpath and Lake Roads, you will find sweeping vistas of beautiful Lake Michigan. The park has been rehabilitated, enhanced and preserved by the Forest Park Project Board and generous donors, in conjunction with the City of Lake Forest. This spectacular entrance to the City’s crown jewel provides new walking trails, a meandering woodland boardwalk and restores ecological communities. Visit the park and enjoy “Your Park - Forest Park”!

Once you have thoroughly experienced the upper park portion of the facility, find your way to the lower level and enjoy some beach time! Forest Park Beach is undeniably one of the most beautiful beaches on the North Shore. Our Parks and Recreation Department encourages you and your family to come and enjoy the splendor of the beach while creating lasting memories with your family. Whether you enjoy activities such as swimming, sailing, paddle boarding, playing volleyball or would prefer more passive activities such as walking or picnicking, this is the place for you. Forest Park Beach is a great place to spend your summer. Pack your lunch, bring a chair and prepare to spend play inspired, fun-filled, sun drenched days. We look forward to seeing you there!

Kick-off your summer and find “What inspires You to Play” at Forest Park by joining the Forest Park Project Board and Master of Ceremonies, Bill Curtis, for the ribbon cutting to re-open Forest Park on June 14, 2015, from 3:00- 5:00 p.m.

What is squash? Rated the # 1 healthi-est sport in the world by Forbes Magazine! Squash is the perfect recreational activity for all ages and is an awesome stress reliever, especially for those of us

who need a break or two. Playing squash not only keeps one fit, it also increases muscular strength and endurance while getting the heart pumping. This fast growing sport offers the best work-out for any athlete and is a great social past-time.

Squash is played by two players (or four players for doubles) in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball. By participating in a rally, the objective is for each player to try to dominate the ‘T’ - the intersection of the red line near the center of the court. Dominating the ‘T’ gives each player the opportunity to better retrieve the returned balls and control the game. Hand-eye coordination is a key component in this mentally and physically challenging sport. Why not give it a go?

serena a. carbonell began her squash career as a 9 year old growing up on the East Coast. She competed as a top-ranked junior captained and played for #1 Westminster School (CT). Serena was awarded Second Team All-American from 1994-1996. After graduating from Trinity, Serena became a Nationally Certified Licensed Massage Therapist and ran the Honolulu Marathon in 2002. Before moving to Illinois, Serena was the Assistant Squash Pro at the Westminster Club on Nantucket Island. She is an active member of US Squash, a US Squash Level 1 Certified Coach and Club Referee as well as being involved with the Illinois Squash Association (ISRA) and a supporter of the METROsquash urban league. Serena is the Head Squash Coach for Lake Forest Country Day School and was the Head Coach for Lake Forest Acad-emy from 2010-2014.

Max Ballo is the new Assistant Squash Professional at the Lake Forest Recreation Center. He started on his school’s Thirds team understanding and honing in on the basics of squash. His sophomore year, he continued to excel and worked his way up the ladder out of 32 boys: starting at the 21st position, then to the 11th. His dedication and drive continued during the season and into the summer months. By his junior year, Max was playing 6th on varsity. During this same year (2012 - 2013), Max often played in tournaments throughout the east coast and his school placed 15th for that season in New England. Out of the 8 varsity players, Max had the best record that season with 13-2. Senior year (2013 - 2014), Max placed 2nd on the team and found very challenging and well-rounded players to compete against. His team placed 18th in New England for his final year.

If your family is a member of the Lake Forest Fitness Center, a discount will be applied to your child’s racquet sports program fees up to age 14. Discounts will apply when you register in person at our facility.

A Northern Barred Owl that was found badly injured by an Iowa road in October is quickly adapting to his new home at the Wildlife Discovery Center. Our newest resident recuperated for two months, thanks to the Iowa state University School of Veterinary Medicine, and is already vocalizing, a good sign of adjustment.

While predators are attracted to roadways because they offer greater visibility of prey, many suffer serious injuries, often fatal, as they sometimes veer into the path of vehicles. This was likely the case with this fellow. His left eye, beyond recovery, had to be removed for the sake of his survival, gravely impairing his ability to hunt in the wild. It appeared that euthanasia might be the only recourse -- but there is a happy ending to the story! One of the Wildlife Discovery Center’s summer staff members, a student at ISU, suggested they release him into our care. This beautiful animal now has a safe home and will be a wonderful ambassador to the Center’s many visitors.

Although we are not certain of his sex, we are calling him a “him” for now. But we’ll know the sex for certain soon via DNA testing. It’s not always easy to ascertain the sex of many animals, including the Northern Barred Owl! Sexual dimorphism is not uncommon among many animals. This just means that aside from the obvious difference between males and females (their reproductive organs), there are other physical differences, and in this case, size. The male tends to be smaller than the female of this species, Strix varia, which seems to be the case here.

Already adult-sized, we figure he’s at least one year old. With a wingspan of three feet -- but weighing in at a surprisingly low weight of 28 ounces -- he is no pipsqueak, but some Northern Barred Owls can reach a wingspan of up to 50 inches. In the wild, he might live to be ten years of age, but with the luxury of a steady diet, good health care and proper shelter, he could live into his 30’s! Now in residence in the outdoor Kookaburra enclosure, come April, he will relocate to a cage specially modified for his needs when those big Kingfishers take to their summer residence. Visitors might be able to hear him call, “Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all,” as he vocalizes once again, a sign of his recovery.

Meet the newest memberof the Wildlife DiscoveryCenter family.

Why Plant trees? With the loss of tens of thousands of ash trees in Lake Forest from Emerald Ash Borer, it’s important to remember that trees have many economic, environ-mental and social benefits. They improve our lives and the places we live and play including our parks. Here are some reasons to plant and care for trees:•benefit human health•improve air quality•increase property value•increase public safety•save energy•provide wildlife habitat•lower temperatures•reduce CO2•reduce runoff and erosion•filter water toxins•reduce urban noiseIf you would like help beautify one our City parks by planting a tree you can contact Tricia Schwall, 847-810-3544 to learn more about our tree planting programs.

Your ParksLake Forest boasts some of the most beautiful parks in the county. There are 9 parks in the City of Lake Forest. Have you visited them all? Take an afternoon or evening and walk or bike to a nearby park. Neighborhood parks offer refuge from the daily grind as well as a chance to meet and play with neighbors. Bring the kids to the neighborhood ball field to play a game of baseball or catch. First-class recreation and cultural facilities present diverse opportuni-ties for personal growth, performance and pleasure. Whichever activity you choose, just get out and get active!

Park Reservation PermitsThe park pavilions and playing fields of Lake Forest are available to Lake Forest residents, not-for-profit community organizations and schools located within the City boundaries for permit when not in conflict with public activities. All permitted events need to be approved by the Recreation staff. Larger permitted events may need to apply for a special use permit through City Hall. Commercial profit-generating events are not allowed. The permitting season runs from February 1 to October 31. A permit does not allow for private use of the entire park since the parks are intended for the enjoyment of all residents, however it does reserve a pavilion or playing field for private use. For further information on reserving a pavilion or playing field please call the Rec Center at 847-234-6700 or visit our website at www.cityoflakeforest.com.

Help Us Maintain Your ParksAlthough crews inspect park sites on a regular basis, litter or vandalism may occur, or additional maintenance may be necessary between visits. The next time you visit one of the parks and notice anything that needs attention, please report to the Parks & Forestry section at 847-810-3567.

The park and Forestry section is committed to offering the best maintained parks and urban forest in the area. We consider it a privilege to serve this community and will strive to make your parks the best they can be. Deerpath Community Park is located at 400 Hastings Road just west of the Recreation Center and directly be-hind Deer Path School. The Deerpath Park property was purchased by the City of Lake Forest from the school in 1962. This was the first community park in Lake Forest and was designed for large events. Deerpath Park is ap-proximately 26 acres with four lighted ball fields, batting cage, four tennis courts, football/soccer/lacrosse fields and a walking path. The ball fields are the only lighted fields in the City’s park system. In 2008, the City of Lake Forest added a preschool playground behind the Recreation Center that is open to the public. Many of our summer sports camps are held at Deerpath Park.

ARKSForest Park update:

Forest Park will reopen to the public this spring with over a mile of new walking trails, a meandering woodland boardwalk, expansive views, and restored ecological communities. The stone cross-park path leads to a new terrace overlooking the Belvedere and the newly designed park benches are in place. The new south parking lot is open with landscaping designed to clean storm water before it enters Lake Michigan. There is also a new South terrace, a drinking fountain for you and one for your dog! We encourage you to come to “Your Park - Forest Park” and enjoy an enchanting experience along the bluffs, ravines and woodlands overlooking Lake Michigan. It’s not too late to be included on the Donor Board as fundraising continues to benefit the Master Plan and to establish a fund for future maintenance of Forest Park. Gifts to The Forest Park Project of $1,000 and up will be noted at various giving levels in perpetuity in the park on a beautifully designed Donor Board. Please visit ForestParkProject.com, click on the “Support” tab for a printable pledge card or fill out the form below and help support Your Park - Forest Park.

(l-r): SMC Commissioner Ann Maine; Forest Park Forest Project Board President Ralph Gesualdo; Vice-President Jane O’Neil; Vice-President Joan DePree; Member Karen Stensrud; Treasurer Peter Cherry; Landscape Architect Cliff Miller ; Superintendant of Parks and Recreation Chuck Myers; City Engineer Bob Ells; City Manager Bob Kiely; SMC Commissioner Mike Rummel.

The Forest Park Project and the City of Lake Forest were commended for addressing infrastructure needs, solving drainage issues, promoting sustainability, maintaining natural site amenities, and encouraging ravine education as part of the Forest Park Master Plan. The project provides a system of bioswales and rain gardens, impervious surface reduction, permeable paving, and native landscaping that provide on-site stormwater storage, filtration and infiltration, sustainable landscaping, and water quality benefits for Lake Michigan. In addition, the project restored flatwoods wetlands for habitat and education purposes along with ravine educational signage at Seminary Ravine. Equally impressive is the Forest Park Board, a private-public partnership established to finance and construct the project, and to maintain the historical 30-acre park, one of the last green open spaces along Lake Michigan.

Forest Park and the City of Lake Forest have been awarded:Lake County Stormwater Management Commission’s 2014 “Development of the Year” Stormwater Award.
