Still American

They say go, return to land that I don't know. It makes no sense. Born and raised American, so Mexico is still foreign.

Culture kept, but this is my home. Immigrant, no: Hispanic.

I love my job,” Louise Kennedy begins. Her job is teaching American Literature, British Litera-ture, and AP Language and Composition at a high school in Florida. “I am always looking for

a way to give more to my students.” She found it when a School of Letters postcard showed up in her mailbox. “At the time I was lamenting how impos-sible getting my MA would be,” she explains. “I was a single mother, I didn’t live near a university, and I didn’t have time to balance family, work and getting a degree without sacrificing quality in all three areas. Sewanee was the perfect solution. I had time in my summers, and Sewanee was an ideal place to be with my children.” But it wasn’t just about the degree: “It was about getting a really good one. There’s no substitute for being in a classroom with an amazing professor and outstanding peers. I always went back to work refreshed and ready to bring something im-portant to the classroom.” And ready to bring it to the wider scholarly world, it turns out: While com-pleting her thesis on the Scottish novelist Tobias Smollett, Louise placed her article about pedagogy and the Greek poet Sappho in English Journal.

Of course there’s more to Sewanee than academics, and Louise will be glad to tell you how her smart and witty School of Letters friends have enlivened her social media feeds—and how she can subsist for whole summers on the hummus, feta, and olive sandwiches at the local coffee house. “Sewanee’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself,” she says. “I tell people that all the time.”

If you’re looking to give more to your students while doing something for yourself, consider earning an MA in English or MFA in creative writing at the Sewanee School of Letters. We begin reading ap-plications in January.

Kids who have access to great books become readers. There is nothing that gets kids reading with tremendous volume or that lifts reading skills higher than a collection

of truly fabulous books. To help teachers achieve these critical goals, the TCRWP has developed new, state-of-the-art classroom libraries for grades K–8. These meticulously-selected libraries:

◗ Recruit students to love reading and move them up levels of complexity

◗ Introduce as many authors and titles as possible, including many new and cutting edge titles

◗ Include books selected for high interest, richness (books that can be mined again and again), and quality of writing and content.
