Strong reading skills are key to students’ overall success at school and beyond. Oxford Levels support all students to progress at every stage of their reading journey.

Oxford Levels are an expertly developed and well-established system for levelling our texts and provide the foundation of our reading schemes.Learning to read means mastering a variety of different skills and allowing students to progress in small steps, at their own pace. That’s why Oxford Levels offer a detailed, finely graded progression – taking students from their very first steps in reading, all the way up to becoming skilful, independent readers.

Oxford Levels: y span from the very early stages of reading in Foundation (Oxford Level 1) all the way up to an advanced Year 6 reader’s level (Oxford Level 20) y are matched to age-related expectations y adhere to clear levelling criteria y support reading progression.

Oxford Levels are the foundation of Oxford’s comprehension resources, which offer a finely graded sequence that supports students’ understanding of texts. As they progress through the levels, students are gradually introduced to more complex vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, spelling, layout and themes, enabling them to develop, practice and consolidate their comprehension skills.

Each level offers new language, new themes, and a chance to consolidate comprehension skills.

Oxford Levels have been used to develop both our newest phonics series as well as many of our well-loved ones.

All of Oxford’s decodable series (excluding Read Write Inc.) follow a structured phonic progression matched to the Letters and Sounds phonic sequence. Oxford Levels follow this sequence too, letting you know exactly when new letters and sounds will be introduced in our decodable books.

You can use the table below to get at-a-glance information on the letters and sounds that you’ll see introduced at each Oxford Level.

Oxford levelled texts have helped millions of students all over the world learn to read and to love reading. Developed by leading experts, Oxford uses the Comprehension Skills Framework below to underpin our Oxford Reading for Comprehension series (see to pages 14–28) and Oxford Reading Buddy Coaching eBooks and comprehension quizzes (see to pages 10–13) .

The framework supports the development and practice of key interactive comprehension strategies and the ongoing independent application of comprehension skills. The comprehension strategies outlined in the framework are the actions readers do in the moment of reading to help build meaning; the comprehension skills are practised after reading.

Percy started to scoop the treasure up. “But where’s my perfect pearl?” he groaned. “I can’t find it!”

“Squeak!” Percy turned to find a rat sitting on the chest

beside him. It had a gold bangle round its furry neck.

“Give that back!” growled Percy. He tried to grab the rat, but it ran away. “Shanti, help me!”

Shanti came at once. The rat squeaked at him and wiggled its hips to make the bangle spin round and round! Shanti giggled.

I think this is no ordinary rat if it can hula-hoop with a bangle! I wonder what else it will do.

An Australian guided reading program for Years F–3

In classrooms across Australia, educators are facing a comprehension challenge. Although students are able to read independently, many have not developed the comprehension skills they need to understand the context of what they are reading. This impacts their ability to learn and to read for enjoyment.

Research shows that a consistent, strategic approach is the key to successfully developing comprehension skills. To support Australian primary school teachers in addressing the comprehension challenge, we have developed a new research-based guided reading program focusing on the development of comprehension skills: Oxford Reading for Comprehension.

The 290 fiction and non-fiction guided reading texts provide a wealth of resources for flexible use within the classroom program.

The text is carefully levelled to Oxford Levels to ensure student progress, and correlated to Reading Levels for easy implementation.

Fiction and non-fiction text types and a variety of themes across all levels engage and excite readers.

A rich variety of illustrations and photos strongly supports the text and how students comprehend meaning.

Coloured band on cover is an easy guide to the 10 curriculum linked themes.

COMPREHENSION

YEARS F–3

Jump into Oxford’s brand new range of take-home readers!

People giggled. The librarian said, “Shhh.”

I couldn’t help it. “Hic! Hic! Hic!”

7

Have you ever had hiccups at the wrong

time and place? Like in the library?

I did. Everyone was quiet. I let out

a loud “Hic!”

6

Hic!

Hayley was the most engaging presenter who was clearly super experienced, not only in the program but in teaching in general. I love that the phonics program clearly values comprehension, handwriting, spelling, oral language, and writing grammar and vocab, and therefore is all encompassing.

– Lucy Possingham, Naracoorte Primary School

The first training I have been to in a while that I went home from completely enthusiastic. I was completely engaged and drawn in by Hayley, her enthusiasm and knowledge. So much explicit teaching followed by enough opportunities for us to practise and learn.

– Brooke Billett, Para Hills School

A Read Write Inc. Success StoryFor teachers working in challenging classroom environments, engaging students might be difficult but not impossible. Tennant Creek Primary School introduced the Read Write Inc. program just over a year ago. Kayti Denham, Year 5 Teacher at the school tells the story of how King of the Birds (a Blue Set 6 Storybook) was the seed and the sprout of the idea for her students to write their very own book. Each handbook includes day-by-day lesson plans that integrate Speed Sounds lessons and comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, handwriting and composition lessons.

sounds and graphemes and provide a quick review of letter–sound correspondences.

y Speed Sounds Cards introduce the 44 sounds and corresponding graphemes to enable students to decode words easily.

y Green and Red Word Cards help students gain fluency when reading the words independently.

Reading Leader HandbookThe handbook provides:

y advice on how to build a strong team of reading teachers y constructive guidance for day-to-day coaching

and monitoring y detailed assessment, grouping and tracking systems

to ensure students complete the program quickly y one-to-one tutoring plans to ensure every

A breakthrough for struggling readers

Project X Code is a reading program that embeds systematic synthetic phonics within a highly motivational 3D adventure series. This book-by-book series will keep children reading as they revisit phonics knowledge and build key reading and comprehension skills.

Features: y A unique two-text approach that builds children’s confidence (Text 1: 100% decodable) and keeps them motivated

(Text 2: at least 80% decodable). y 14 entry and exit points mean that children can start and finish the intervention at a point that is right for them. y Fully resourced with comprehensive lesson plans, easy-to-use assessment and progress tracking for maximum impact on reading.

Decodable texts

y Embedded phonics deliver action-packed stories, designed and built to appeal to students from Year 2 onwards. y Two texts within every book drive the story forward. The first text is 100% decodable, to build reading confidence;

the second is at least 80% decodable, to draw children through the series and keep them motivated.
