This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you deliver a prepared or impromptu talk on an issue employing the techniques in public speaking. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. After going through this module, you are expected to:

Learning Competency: Deliver a prepared or impromptu talk on an issue

employing the techniques in public speaking

▪ identify the features of an extemporaneous and impromptu speech;

▪ develop and deliver an effective extemporaneous speech and impromptu

speech; and

▪ reflect on the learning on organizing and delivering an extemporaneous and

impromptu speech.

Set Up and Prepare

What’s New

Activity 1 YOUTUBE SENSATION

Below is a checklist for a well-delivered extemporaneous speech. Check YES if you observed it in the video and NO if not.

Activity 2. SPEECH FLUENCY

The purpose of this exercise is for you to practice speaking clearly and fluently. To begin the activity, choose a topic from the fish bowl. Then, in thirty to sixty seconds, think about what you are going to say in your speech. Once you have gathered your thoughts, record your speech using your android phone then answer the questions that follow. If you do not have any device for recording, you may opt to write your speech on a sheet of paper.

Observations Yes No

1. The speaker showed confidence.

2. The speaker maintained good posture and eye contact.

3. The speaker conveyed his/her ideas well.

4. The speaker gave an interesting introduction.

5. The speaker gave a good conclusion.

6. The speaker used facial expressions and proper gestures.

7. The speaker had good pronunciation and maintained a well-modulated voice.

There are times when we are asked to say few words about a topic we have no intention of speaking about. Has this ever happened to you? Here are some sample videos of extemporaneous speeches in YouTube. Watch and take note of what makes the speaker deliver her speech well. • Extemporaneous Speech Contest – Mitzchilouise S. Baylosis

What is it

How did you find doing the tasks in Activity 1 and 2? This time, focus your attention on the description of the speeches that you have watched and done.

EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH

An extemporaneous speech is a planned and prepared speech. Unlike memorized or manuscript speeches which are delivered word-for-word, an extemporaneous speech is delivered with the help of short notes and a clear outline. Most people who speak in public often prefer the extemporaneous method of delivery. Although it might look more challenging than the manuscript or memorized speeches, it is more spontaneous and personal.

Steps in Preparing for a Successful Extemporaneous Speech 1. Reinforce! You may explore other main points, but always refer back to your thesis. This will greatly help your audience remember your message. 2. Capture! State the central idea of your extemporaneous speech in one declarative sentence. Keep your sentence specific. Ask yourself what you want your audience to know exactly. 3. Develop! Now that you have a clear central idea, you are ready to map out the supporting points in an outline. 4. Introduce! In the introduction, make sure you: • grab the attention of the audience with a striking one-liner. • give a short background by explaining why they have to listen. • state your thesis. 5. Check! Develop at least three main points and check each of them with these questions: • Does each point have one single idea? • Does each point reiterate the thesis statement? • Does each point prepare the discussion of the next main point? 6. Supply! Make sure that each main point has enough examples, testimonies, statistics, or cases. In doing this, you give the audience new information or views to learn from.

IMPROMPTU SPEECH

Impromptu Speech According to Delivery

Description

• Speaking without advanced preparation

• Unrehearsed speech

• Spoken conversationally

Speaking Situations

• In an event where you are asked to say a few words

• First day at work or in class, or during an

• Interview

Advantages • Spontaneous or natural speaking

• More focused and brief

Disadvantages

• Tendency to be disorganized

• Lacks connection with the audience

• Nerve-cracking for inexperienced speakers and beginners

Tips

• Pause for a moment to plan in your head what to say.

• State your main point briefly and deliver it at a pace your audience can follow.

• End by saying thank you.

Impromptu speeches are delivered with little or no time for preparation. In most instances, you are called to speak at the spur of the moment because you are expected to be knowledgeable about the subject. For example, your teacher assigned you to read an article before the class starts. Then, during the class you were asked to deliver an impromptu speech about what you have learned from the article. Another instance to illustrate an impromptu situation is when you are campaigning for a position in school and you are asked by your fellow students to respond to their questions.

What’s More ACTIVITY 1. ONE MINUTE SPEECH

That's sixty seconds to inform, to persuade, or to entertain using between 130 to 150 or so words. Can you get the point quickly and effectively? Giving impromptu1-minute speech teaches us about talking smarter, not faster! (*Impromptu - without preparation time or rehearsal) One technique in delivering an impromptu speech is the PREP technique.

Some Useful Tips in Effective Impromptu Speech Delivery

Before

the

Speech

1. Smile.

2. Relax by thinking about positive things. Keep telling yourself, “I am a

brilliant speaker. I will nail this presentation.”

3. Identify your purpose. Is it to inform, to entertain, to welcome, to

congratulate, to apologize, or to give birthday greetings? Ideally

make your talk duration not less than 10 minutes or 8 minutes.

4. Think of one big word that can serve as your main point. If you think

you have enough, think of the rule of three.

5. Start outlining in your head. Focus on what to say first. Be reminded

that your first few words are crucial, so make them strong, powerful

and catchy.

During

the

Speech

1. When you are called, keep composed. Walk slowly to the lectern or

the center stage.

2. Shake hands with the one who introduced you.

3. As you stand to deliver, establish eye contact, and begin right away

with your opening statements. Part of your opening is greeting your

audience.

4. From your initial idea to the next, use appropriate transitional

devices.

5. Observe appropriate and effective nonverbal cues.

6. Observe time limit. Remember, you barely have five minutes to say

something.

After

the

Speech

1. Say thank you.

2. Return to your place comfortably.

PREP stands for Point, Reason, Example, Point

7

P-oint Start by stating your main point or claim. R-eason/s Give reasons to explain why your point is true. Support or back up your case with evidence from research, facts, data or statistics. E-xample/s Give one or more examples/illustrations to support your main point (case) P-oint Conclude by showing how your position is right.

Here is an example of PREP used to make a short speech at a party for a colleague who is leaving an organization.

Point Ana's departure is going to be a big loss for our organization. Reason She hasn't only been a co-worker but a friend and a sister to us. Example She has been great at managing the office and keeping everything really organized. She has also done a fantastic job of building relationships with our partners. Point These are just few reasons why Ana's departure is going to be big loss in our organization and we are going to miss her tremendously. Choose your topic from the box for your short speech using the PREP Strategy. With the aid of your phone, set your timer for 60 seconds and record your speech.

Activity 2. DIG DEEPER

Below are links to empowering speeches delivered by inspiring people at an event organized by the nonprofit organization, TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design). Watch any of the following videos:

I Am a Filipino by Carlos P. Romulo

I am a Filipino–inheritor of a glorious past, hostage to the uncertain future. As such I must prove equal to a two-fold task–the task of meeting my responsibility to the past, and the task of performing my obligation to the future.

I sprung from a hardy race, child many generations removed of ancient Malayan pioneers. Across the centuries the memory comes rushing back to me: of brown-skinned men putting out to sea in ships that were as frail as their hearts were stout. Over the sea I see them come, borneuponthebillowingwaveandthewhistlingwind, carrieduponthemightyswellofhope– hopeinthefreeabundanceofnewlandthatwastobetheirhomeandtheirchildren’sforever.

I am a Filipino. In my blood runs the immortal seed of heroes–seed that flowered down the centuriesindeedsofcourageanddefiance.Inmyveinsyetpulsesthesamehotbloodthatsent Lapulapu to battle against the first invader of this land, that nerved Lakandula in the combat against the alien foe, that drove Diego Silang and Dagohoy into rebellion against the foreign oppressor.

The seed I bear within me is an immortal seed. It is the mark of my manhood, the symbol of dignity as a human being. Like the seeds that were once buried in the tomb of Tutankhamen manythousandyearsago, itshallgrowandflowerandbearfruitagain.Itistheinsigniaofmy race, and my generation is but a stage in the unending search of my people for freedom and happiness.

I am a Filipino, child of the marriage of the East and the West. The East, with its languor and mysticism, its passivity and endurance, was my mother, and my sire was the West that came thundering across the seas with the Cross and Sword and the Machine. I am of the East, an eager participant in its spirit, and in its struggles for liberation from the imperialist yoke. But I also know that the East must awake from its centuried sleep, shake off the lethargy that has bound his limbs, and start moving where destiny awaits.

IamaFilipino, andthisismyinheritance.WhatpledgeshallIgivethatImayproveworthyof my inheritance? I shall give the pledge that has come ringing down the corridors of the centuries, and it shall be compounded of the joyous cries of my Malayan forebears when first they saw the contours of this land loom before their eyes, of the battle cries that have resoundedineveryfieldofcombatfromMactantoTiradPass, ofthevoicesofmypeoplewhen theysing:

“IamaFilipinoborntofreedom, andIshallnotrestuntilfreedomshallhavebeenaddedunto my inheritance—for myself and my children and my children’s children—forever.” (Reprinted from The Philippines Herald, August 16, 1941)
