EINE FOSSILWELT IN EUROPA

Rund 200.000 Jahre alt ist der Schatz, den

Archäologen während vieler Jahre in der Braun ­

kohlengrube Neumark­Nord im Geisel tal gerettet

haben. Die Fundstelle ist eine der bedeutendsten

Informationsquellen zur altsteinzeitlichen Klima­

und Naturgeschichte Europas. In den fossilen

Sedimenten blieben die Relikte eines ganzen See­

biotops erhalten, das in einer Wärmephase des

Eiszeitalters ein geradezu südländisches Ökosys­

tem hervorbrachte. Die extrem gut erhaltenen

Reste von exotischen Tieren und Pflanzen arten

illustrieren die Vielfalt und Fremdartigkeit einer

längst vergangenen Urwelt.

Im Zentrum der Darstellung stehen die Über­

reste gigantischer Eurasischer Altelefanten, die

im und am See starben. Die Vertreter dieser

Elefantenart gehören zu den größten Rüsseltie­

ren, die jemals auf Erden lebten. Überdies sind

die Anwesenheit und das intelligente Handeln

des Urmenschen in jenem exzellenten Jagd revier

nachweisbar.
