POETICAL V ERS ION OF THE CAPTURE OF PRESCOTT

’Twa s on a da rk an d stormy night

Th e wind and waves did roa r

Bold Ba rton then , with for ty men,

Went down upon th e shore .

And in a wha le—boa t they set off

To Rhode I s land fa ir ,To ca tch a redcoa t Genera l

Who then res ided there .

Th rough B r i t i sh fl eet s an d gua rd-boa t s strong

They held their dangerou s w ay,

Ti l l they a r r i ved unto thei r port,

And then did not de lay .

A tawny son o f Afr i c’s ra ceThem th rough th e rav ine led,

And enter ing then th e Over ing house,They found h im in h is bed

But to get i n they h ad no means

Except poor Cu ffee’

s head ,Who bea t th e door down , then rushed in

And sei zed h im in h i s bed .

‘ Stop $let me put my cloth ing on $’

Th e Genera l then d id pray‘Your cloth ing

,ma ssa

,I wi l l take ;

For dres s w e cannot stay .

Then through rye stubb le h im they led ,

With shoes an d cloth ing none,And placed h im in their boa t qu i te snug

,

And from th e shore were gone .

(‘Iapture nf lflrvzrntt 1 2 7

Soon th e a la rm w a s sounded loud :‘

Th e Yankees th ey have come,And stolen Prescott from h i s bed

,

And him have ca r r ied hum .

Th e drum s were bea t , sky—rocket s fl ewTh e sold ier s shouldered a rm s

,

And ma rched a round th e grounds they knew ,

Fil led w ith most d ire a la rms .

But th rough th e fl eet w ith muffled oa r s

They hel d the i r dev ious w ay,

And landed h im on’

Gan set t shores ,Where B r i ton s hel d no sway .

V J h en unto land th e captors came,Where r escue there w a s none

,

‘A bold pu sh th i s,

th e Genera l c r ied ,‘Of p r i soner s I am on e .
