The Statistical Tables, which it m~y be noted, ban been i,rq:ared in such a manner as to facilitate comparison between the principal maritime cou11tries of the \rnrld, exhibit interesting data as to the relative frequency of the different kinds of casualty \Yhich conclude the existence of ships. Strandings and kindred casualties which are compris~d nuder the term "wrecked" are the most prolific cause of disaster. To such casualties are attributable fJG per cent. of the number of steamers and motorships lost, and 37·3 per cent. of sailing ships. Cases of abandoned, foundered, and missing ships ar~. no doubt, frequently more or leEs similar in the circumstances of loss; and, if these be taken collectively, they comprehend 22 per cent. of steamers and motorships, and 35·8 per cent. of the sailing ships removed from the mercantile marine during 1930, owing to casualty.

Of course, a large proportion of the tonnage annually remo>ed from the merchant fleets of the world comes to what may be called a natural end, being broken up, dismantled, condemned, &c., for reasons not known to be consequent upon casualty or i;.tress of weather. During 1930, the ships so broke11 up, condemned, &c., amounted to no less than 68·9 per cent. of the tonnage of the steamers and motorships, and 61·8 per cent. of the sailing ships included in the Tables under review.

Table Ko. 4 shows the number and tunnage of steamers and motorships of all nationalities lost through marine and war casualties since 1907, exclusiYe of ships broken up, condemned, &c., not in consequence of casualty or stress of weather. This table gi>es for~each country the percentage lost of the total tonnage owned. Excluding the five war years 1914-18, the average percentage of loss of steamers and motorships belonging to Great Britain and Ireland during the remaining nineteen years amounts to less than 1 per cent. per annum of the tonnage owned. The World percentage for the year 1930 is 0"59.

STATISTICAL SUMMARY

OF

SHIPS OF 100 ri_ioNS .AND UPW .ARDS,

TOTALLY LOST, CONDEMNED, &c.,

DURING THE YEAR

1930.

NoTE:-This Summary, which is based upon the quarterly returns of total losses, &c., includes

ships which had not been given up as total losses, or of the loss of which information had not been

received, when the returns for the quarters in which they respectively occurred were compiled.

Particulars of all such additions to the quarterly returns- are given on pages 6 to 8.

A distinguishing feature of the Wreck Returns published by Lloyd's Register is that, except as

stated in the footnotes to Table No. 1, they are compiled strictly according to the dates at which the

casualties resulting in total loss actually occurred, and not according to the dates at which reports of

casualties were received.
