Answers

Retrieval and Recording 1. Elphaba, Glinda and The Citizens of Oz 2. to be with The Wizard 3. in the Western Sky 4. No wizard that there is or was 5. the chance to fly 6. losing love 7. delusions of grandeur 8. unlimited 9. she flew off the handle 10. the rules of someone else’s games

Context Clues

1. c 2. b 3. a 4. d

Inference (answers may vary)

1. getting so cross that you shout or do something unkind 2. Elphaba is tired of having to do what she is told all the time and wants to be independent 3. She is not sure about what to do but something is telling her (perhaps her head or her heart) what the right thing for her to do is. She should follow these thoughts. 4. This is a metaphor for freedom and doing what she wants without anyone telling her what to do. I could also mean that any insults thrown her way can be ignored and will not upset her. 5. That they have previously been good friends and something has happened which they disagree on. Evidence may vary but could include the fact Glinda calls her Elphie, that they planned dreams together, that Elphaba asks Glinda to join her or that Glinda is trying to stop her making a mistake. 6. This means that although she may lose her friends and be lonely, at least she is living by her rules and not someone else’s. She is independent, and this is now more important to her than friendship.

Assessment

1. RR – any limits 2. CC – C 3. CC – happiness (accept any synonyms of this) 4. INF – Elphie, Dreams the way we planned ‘em, Together we’re unlimited, If we work in tandem, There’s no fight we cannot win etc. 5. S – Elphaba gets in trouble 6. INF – This is meant sarcastically and she means the opposite of this. This is not because Glinda dislikes Elphaba but is actually cross she is making a mistake. I know this because she says ‘I hope you're happy how you've hurt your cause forever’ which is negative. She also says ‘I hope you think you’re clever’ and the word ‘think’ suggests she is not. Other evidence could also be included but an explanation and two pieces of evidence are required for 3 marks.
