To paraphrase Alfred Lord Tennyson, in the spring a young feline’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love—and those thoughts soon lead to the pitter patter of tiny kitten paws.

Do you hear a teeny, tiny meow? We do and it is announcing the opening of Kitten Season 2020. Yes, kitten season has arrived!

What is kitten season?

Simply put, kitten season is a time of year

when we see a large increase in the number of

litters being born. Cats can become pregnant at

4 months old which is why it is so important to

spay and neuter your cats when they are young. One litter includes an average of 4 to 8

kittens.

What can you do to help? - Consider Fostering or Adopting One

While lots of us go "aww ...newborn kittens -- how cute" our staff and volunteers know that this is the start of a very long season of hard work finding foster homes to care for these babies until they are ready for adoption.

Your love and attention will allow these babies to reach the weight they need to be spayed/neutered and adopted. The foster time period for these youngsters can run from a couple of weeks to a couple of months.

During "kitten season" shelters are usually at maximum capacity. Adopting a kitten from the our adoption center is of course a win-win.

According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), tens of millions of unowned cats live outdoors and contribute to breeding cycles. You can help prevent local strays in your neighborhood by contacting local trap-neuter-return (TNR) clinics. After the strays are spayed or neutered, they are returned to your neighborhood .

As of March 30, 2020, ORHS closed the shelter to the public. Since we anticipated a

closure at some point, we put out word on social media in February that we would need

temporary fosters for most of our fur kids at the shelter. As usual, our supporters came

through for us. We deeply appreciate EVERYONE, past and present who has ever

volunteered to foster our animals, but we are especially grateful for the support in these

uncertain times. With that in mind, we would like to give a shout out to those big hearted

animal lovers who overwhelmed us by opening their homes to our animals and treating them

like royalty. Thank You to:

William Dagley, Shulaika La Cruz, Caylee Morrell, Karen Sawinski, Dave & Marie Delich,

Peyton Rardin, Brian Dugan, Isabelle Martinez , Sheri Siegel, Stephanie Coleman,

Richard & Katherine Calhoun, Victoria Barbee, Christine Barrett, Carol Bishop,

Heather Callaway Penny Davis, Cheryl Ducray, Melody English, April Evans

Tobias Jackson, Hilary Harrington, Melissa Hankinson, Kim Leary, Kathi Martin,

Mark & Kelly Fairbrass, Christine Plazola, Ethan Pritchett, Ann Rowan, Ellen Shae

Marlene Smith, Jackie Stolarski, Jill Suvoski, Beth Wilson, Joe & Sandy Williamson

We are humbled and grateful for this outpouring of support for our shelter and for this

beautiful display of love for the animals. We here at ORHS always knew we had the greatest

supporters with the biggest hearts, and gestures like this confirm it.

Thank You

Sometimes animals come to us with histories of very little human

contact. Through the length of time they are with us, we hold our

breath and hope that one day the perfect person comes walking

through the door to adopt them. And then it happens…

A litter of adorable, yet unsocialized, kittens was seen by many people at a local Wendy’s

restaurant. Living on garbage, these 4 little fuzzballs would dodge traffic at the drive thru and

skirt the bad weather. One of our volunteers was able to trap all 4 and took them home to

socialize. Sometimes that’s an easy task, other times it becomes a very long process. One of

the kittens, Frosty, was especially hard to tame.

He was transferred to another foster home where he would spend the next year, always on the

periphery of what was going on and never really becoming trusting of humans. Frosty finally

came to the shelter where his skittishness continued. He

became friends with other cats at the shelter, but only with

people when food was involved.

Recently a woman came to us looking for a companion for

her senior cat, Fred. The cat she came to see really wasn’t a

good fit for her, so she looked at the others and asked a lot of

very good questions. Then she saw Frosty. This lady was

used to having stray and feral

cats; in fact, Fred came to her as a stray. Since she was looking

for a companion for Fred, she wasn’t really concerned about how

much the new kitty would like her…as long as he got along with

Fred. And then it happened: It was Frosty’s turn to be adopted!

Finally!

Early on, it was reported that Frosty was hiding a good bit (to be expected) but that he was coming out to eat and use the litter box. Then we heard that he was coming out to play a bit, but would hide when his new mom would come in. Recently we learned

that Frosty is enjoying time with his new mom…and with Fred! He has learned to trust her and lets her pet him! Finally!

5

One evening as we were closing for the day, two young girls walked

into our adoption shelter with a very sweet puppy in their arms. Nice

blonde coat, beautiful big eyes and a tiny tail wagging a mile a

minute. This puppy was clearly in pain….one of his hind legs was

badly injured and almost broken. We rushed him to Park Place

Animal Hospital and after much diagnosis was told that

amputating his leg is the way to go. After much deliberation, we

went ahead with the surgery. The next day when our volunteers went

to visit him, he greeted them with non-stop wags. His zest for life

just overwhelmed us with joy. We named him SIMBA !

We love to hear about the “happily ever after stories” and hope you

enjoy this update from Simba’s family as much as we did.

“Simba today is a handsome 53 pound lovebug. He got adopted by an ORHS alum family, four

months ago. He initially struggled with potty training but has now learned to ring the bell.

He loves all of his family, especially playing with his puppy siblings. Many times he runs for a

bit and once they get far ahead he stops and lays down. Once they circle around he pops up

and goes after them again. He wears out quicker than they do as well, but it doesn't seem to

bother him. He is such an easy going, laid back boy. He doesn't waste energy either, he even

lays down when he eats!

When we first adopted him, he could not go up or down the stairs off the back deck, but after a

few short weeks he mastered doing it all by himself! He also is able to get on the couch by

himself most of the time. We have to pick him up and put him in bed at night though. We will

need to get bed stairs soon, if he gets much bigger.

He loves to talk to you, similar to how a husky loves to talk and he loves to ignore you when

you call, also much like a husky! He loves snuggles,

playing with toys and bones, and he loves treats! On top

of learning to ring the doggie bell, he knows how to sit,

lay down, lay on his side, and talk. He listens when he is

told to go lay in his bed in his crate. He is also very

protective when guests come over, he takes him a bit to

calm down.

Simba is our special guy and we are so happy that we

brought him into our family!”

MURRAY, THE KITTY GETS A BIG

BEST FRIEND…AND SHE’S A

SWEETHEART!

When animals are adopted from ORHS they go into

their forever homes with all the best wishes from our

shelter, including those for lots of love, long lives and

tons of fun. And we always get super excited over

pictures adopters send showing that those wishes really do come true. Take the case of

Murray…

Found in a box on the side of the road, Murray and his 2 siblings

came to ORHS as sweet, adorable kittens. They played together

day and night, ate like gangbusters and grew like weeds. When a

family came looking for a little black kitten to add to their family,

we knew exactly the right one! Well, it was love at first sight and

Murray was officially adopted!

Updates started coming in immediately, but we could never have

anticipated the new buddy Murray (now Roger) would get; nor could we have ever known what great friends they would become! But just look for yourself… Yes, pictures are worth a thousand words!

Tuxedo’s story is a true Rags to Riches story. Tuxedo

(now Mikey) came to ORHS as a transfer from Union

Point Animal Control. He was originally surrendered to

Union Point unaltered, in need of dental work, severely

matted and unkempt .

We think Tuxedo was a breeder dog who never really

got to be a puppy or live outside his kennel, because it

seems that everything he is experiencing now is new

like a puppy.

After some initial care from the team at ORHS he was

placed in a Foster home while awaiting a neuter date

and also to have some dental work completed.

During his time in Foster he stole his foster

mom’s heart away with his happy go lucky

personality, she decided she just had to keep

him after his surgery and dental work. He

doesn't a miss a chance to now proudly show

off his permanent grin.

He has discovered that shredding paper is

fun. Going in and out the door is fun and

now he is starting to lay flat on his back with

his legs outstretched!

If you are inspired by Tuxedo’s story and

want to know more about Fostering contact

us and we would be glad to talk to you more

about the program.

So many of us are fortunate enough to share our lives with animals. The gift of unconditional

love of a dog or the honor of being chosen by a cat…...our animals display a generosity of

spirit which makes our lives fuller and richer.

Please remember the animals of Oconee Regional Humane Society when you prepare your

will or trust documents. Your gift of love and compassion will make a lifesaving difference for

the homeless pets who are counting on us.

For more information about making a planned gift to ORHS, contact us via email at

[email protected].

To leave a bequest, simply write:

“I give to Oconee Regional Humane Society, Tax ID# 58-2440625 (the sum of $____ or %

___ of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate) for its general purposes”.

You are possibly done with your shelter-in-place spring cleaning and now looking to find a new home for the furniture pieces collecting dust in the garage.

This is where the ORHS pickup service comes in handy. We offer free pick up for those heavy pieces of furniture that require multi-ple muscle power.

In the past we have encouraged donors to stop by and drop off fur-niture. This year it is by appointment only.

To schedule a pickup or drop-off call ORHS at 706-454-1508 or email us at [email protected]

The actual date for the furniture sale is yet to be determined.

However, all along we will post certain pieces on Nextdoor and various Facebook yard sale sites.

Please be on the look out for those posts.

Our sweet, pretty Bellamy has been waiting for a

home for a long time. She watches and hears all her friends

have gone to loving homes. NOW IT IS HER TURN.

She so badly wants a family of her own to love. She came

to the shelter with one pup. It was clear that she ended up at

the previous shelter from an abusive environment. At the

time, she was very scared and timid.

The last two months she has been with a foster family. The

foster family would love to adopt her but during normal

conditions they travel a lot and that makes it hard to have a

pet.

As per the foster family…”Bellamy has come a long way

in the last couple of months. She has worked very hard to

become the sweet lady she is now. She is now one of those

dogs so full of love.. Playful, loving, snuggly ...just a loving

goof. If you spend a little time with her you will learn that

she just wants to love you and be loved. Her signature move

is to get a toy and kiss your face.

The heartworm treatment was hard on her but she was a

trooper. Now that she is done with her heartworm treatment

she dreams of that fenced yard where she has room to run

and play. She walks great on leash and is house broken.”

Please consider adding Bellamy to your family. She would

do great as the only dog. She wants your full attention.

Bellamy barely sheds… she emits magical fibers of

joy and love !

Here’s Phyllis, a three-and-a-half-year-old exotic feline who is Purr-suing her Purrfect Place!

Phyllis resembles the glamorous Abyssinian breed portrayed in paintings and sculptures of the ancient Egyptian cats which show an elegant feline with a muscular body.

With long legs in proportion to her lean body, big green eyes, short silky blonde hair, she looks like a Supermodel when she struts her stuff.

Phyllis is approximately 8 pounds and because she is full of extraordinary energy she never has to diet. She is naturally small and slender.

Phyllis has an intelligent, extroverted, playful personality. With her almond shaped green eyes, long pointed ears and inquisitive expression, you can’t help but fall in love with her. She is clearly attentive, she listens to you, but, unlike Alexa, she will keep your secret’s.

She is also a graceful athlete. She will approach you on her terms but invites you to exercise, climb a pole, play or explore with her whenever you are available. She loves people and other cats but may not be your ideal lap cat.

Phyllis came to ORHS after being rescued through a trap/neuter/release program in 2016. Although she is stunning and physically active, you don’t have to worry about her getting in “the family way.” She was able to leave her wild ways behind her when she was spayed so that she, and you, don’t have to worry about all the unwanted attention being so attractive usually brings.

Phyllis loves Savage Garden (from her feral years). She has a private meditation she repeats and she hopes you will take her to her Purrfect Place:

Like in your eyes, I see my future in an instant I think I found my best friend I knew I loved you before I met you I have been waiting all my life A thousand angels dance around you I am complete now that I’ve found you.
