In your kindness, please remember

May their souls and the souls of all the faithful depart-

ed through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Last week we received notice that Bish-

op McManus approved the recommen-

dation of our parish committees and

signed the contract for the repair of the

roofs on our parish property.

There are three roofs that have been

leaking, one in the rectory caused the

ceiling in the dining room there to collapse nearly a year

ago around the Christmas holiday. There is also a leak in

an upstairs bedroom. These have been leaking for nearly

three years and we have been working at the direction of

our Finance Committee to secure three bids for this work.

A year ago, we had two and then the window of opportuni-

ty closed with the early onset of cold weather so that the

adhesive could not be applied.

The second is the higher roof of the church that has caused

some water stains in the plaster. Electrical work this past

year has revealed natural light entering the attic which indi-

cated that there are areas of the slate that need to be re-

paired or replaced to secure the interior for painting.

The final one is at the glass doors for the connector by the

bell tower. The design of this roof as it ends before the

church causes water and ice build up that enters the interior

and has deteriorated the plaster at the corner. All of these

should be repaired in the coming weeks. Your generosity

provides the funding already for these repairs.

A Message from Father Peter

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend is one that might be remembered by history

as ushering a new experience for the Church in ways that

the Second Vatican Council did over a half a century ago.

While there are not a lot of changes expected to the way in

which we celebrate our liturgy or the sacraments, this

weekend is the beginning of a series of meetings called by

Pope Francis to prepare for a Synod on Synodality to be

realized in two years at the Vatican. Pope Francis, taking a

lead from Saint Paul VI sees the use of the synod as the

future direction for the governance of the Church and a way

to promote its mission of evangelization to our modern

world. Explaining that this is to start in the local Church,

each diocese and subsequently parish is to be attentive this

weekend to invoking the Holy Spirit and inviting God’s

power to infuse this process with grace and holy wisdom

over the next two years.

Speaking at an event marking the opening of the twoyear process

leading to the synod on Oct. 9, the pope said that proceedings

could be impeded by “formalism,” “intellectualism,” and “the

temptation of complacency.”

Addressing the first risk, he said: “If we want to speak of a syn-

odal Church, we cannot remain satisfied with appearances alone;

we need content, means, and structures that can facilitate dialogue

and interaction within the People of God, especially between

priests and laity.”

Why do I emphasize this? Because sometimes there is some elit-

ism in the presbyteral order that makes it detached from the laity;

and the priest ultimately becomes the ‘master of the house’ and

not the shepherd of a whole Church that is moving forward.”

“This requires changing certain overly vertical, distorted and par-

tial visions of the Church, the priestly ministry, the role of the

laity, ecclesial responsibilities, roles of governance and so forth.”

Turning to the second risk, he cautioned that the synod “could

turn into a kind of study group,” losing itself in abstraction.

He said that the process would then consist of “the usual people

saying the usual things, without great depth or spiritual insight,

and ending up along familiar and unfruitful ideological and parti-

san divides, far removed from the reality of the holy People of

God and the concrete life of communities around the world.”

The final risk, he said, was to adopt an attitude that “We have

always done it this way.”

“Those who think this way, perhaps without even realizing it,

make the mistake of not taking seriously the times in which we

are living,” he commented.

Let us answer the call of our Holy Father for the future of

the Church by being prayerful today & in the months ahead.

A Look Back … Catholic Women’s Congress Part 2

The women’s program, with more than a thousand women

in attendance opened with a Pontifical Mass in Saint

Mary’s Church celebrated by Bishop Wright. The sermon

was on the theme of the Congress: “Our Land and Our La-

dy.” It was given by Fr. Joseph Jurasko, OP, of Providence

College in Rhode Island. The setting for the Mass was “in

Honor of Our Lady of Fatima,” arranged by Sr. M. Floren-

tine. A choir of 70 voices with membership from Saint

Mary’s, Sacred Heart of Hopedale and Sacred Heart in Mil-

ford provided the music for the worship under the direction

of Miss Ada DiGiannantonio who was assisted by Ben

Lancisi as the organist.

Over 1,600 young teenage women also were in attendance.

Their day’s events began with a Mass at Sacred Heart of

Jesus Parish celebrated by Fr. Daniel Egan of the Atone-

ment Friars from Graymoor, NY who also presented two of

the afternoon sessions to the young participants. These ses-

sions were held in Saint Mary’s Church. One of the points

that Fr. Egan made was in trying to help the teens under-

stand their parents so that they could get along better. He

reminded them that their parents were people like them be-

fore they met, fell in love, married and had children. He

tried to help them understand their parents as fellow human

beings. He explained, “They too get financially broke and

discouraged and tired and fed up with monotony. And

when they do, they act as people do. In other words, kids,

it would be much easier to understand your parents if you

could learn to treat them as people and to project in to

their persons your own feelings and reactions to things.

Try it. Sometimes it works magic.”

The women’s program was held in the auditorium of the

Town Hall. The main speaker was Msgr. Francis Lally, the

editor of The Boston Pilot, the catholic newspaper of the

Archdiocese of Boston. His topic was “Springs of Evil”

and he identified how the disintegration of modern culture,

the rise of secularism, and the lack of moral values coupled

with the preponderance of violence on the television were

leading young people astray, believing that this is what the

world should be like. “The springs of evil bubble at our

feet. All of us are threatened by these small forces of evil

that become stronger unless controlled at the start.”

but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)

Our Response: If you held a mirror up to your life, would it re-

flect God’s love and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try

changing your attitude from “I want more” to “thank you God for

everything you have given me, I have enough to share”. This

change in perspective will bring you joy through service to oth-

God-centered.

Teach Kids to Protect Themselves at Home

We consider our homes to be safe places for our children. But

being home alone can pose risks for children. Here are a few

tips to teach kids that will help keep them safe when you are

not with them at home: Never answer the door if alone. Do not

invite anyone in the house without the permission of a parent

or babysitter. Don’t tell anyone on the phone that your parents

are not home. Instead tell them that your parents can’t come

Fa Cng Dn Mas

As we announced last weekend, with our youth return-

ing to Religious Education classes and to Sunday

Mass as part of their instruction, we are asking parish-

ioners to wear something to cover their face during

any movement during Mass. So, we are requesting

that face coverings be worn inside the church:

When entering and taking a seat

 During the communion procession

When leaving the church until outside

Masks may be removed while seated during the read-

ings, homily, and prayers if that helps with your com-

fort during worship. Our concern is that the youth

cannot be vaccinated and we want them to feel re-

spected and to be safe when they're among us.

“Dearest St. Joseph, at the word of an angel,

you lovingly took Mary into your home. As

God’s humble servant, you guided the Holy

Family on the road to Bethlehem, welcomed

Jesus as your own son in the shelter of a man-

ger, and fled far from your homeland for the

safety of both Mother and Child…. Help us to

faithfully commit ourselves to the service and

defense of human life especially where it is

vulnerable or threatened. Obtain for us the

grace to do the will of God in all things.

Amen.”

Dad opens ice cream truck with his 2

children with Down syndrome

When when Joel Wegener realized how hard the world

out there was for his two children with Down syndrome,

the father of 10 made a decision. In his hometown of

Cincinnati, with his children, he opened an ice cream

truck. From April to July of this year they had sold 5,000

ice cream treats and desserts, going “beyond all expecta-

tions,” Wegenertells WLWT.

It’s about an experience for everybody, but to give my

kids something to do and show other parents maybe

there is something creative, out of the box, that we can

come up for our family and for our kids to do.”

Being special shouldn’t limit your dreams

It’s difficult for kids like Mary Kate, 21, and Josh, 18,

not only to have their dream job, but to even have a job

at all. But despite the fact that many countries and states

have legislation to prohibit discrimination, legal

measures are not enough to make it a reality.

This is a hard reality to digest in a culture that talks a lot

about dreams and inclusion.Unfortunately, society is

often not willing to put inclusion into practice in real life.

Inclusion: Deeds and not just words

Our society still isn’t willing to make room for

everyone, unfortunately. The numbers of abor-

tions due to diagnoses like that of Josh and

Mary Kate speak for themselves.

Fortunately, where legal obligations are inef-

fective, the hearts of dads such as Joel Wegen-

er come to remind us that there’s no need to be

afraid of diversityand difference. We can solve

the problem with determination, creativity,

and even whipped cream and sprinkles (it nev-

er hurts)!

“Special Neat Treats” sells ice cream and hope

Wegener bought the ice cream truck from a family who

have a special needs daughter, and had worked it with

their own children. It’s a white van, decorated with

stickers that reflect the 90s more than the latest

trends. The sign says it all: “Special Neat Treats.” That

title is the creative touch by their mom Freida, a play

on words referring to “special needs.”

“It’s much more than selling ice cream,” says Joel, and

it’s true: They sell joy in the form of ice cream and

chocolate, but also hope, and that’s free.

There are no secondclass people or jobs

Wegener is providing hope for his kids and for many

families who witness a small dream come true. Wegen-

er toldKLove Newspodcast:

For some reason, God said, “We’re going to

take this simple little idea and we’re going to

make something big out of it.”

We want to be a lighthouse. We want people to see Christ

in the way that we handle this whole endeavor. Our fami-

ly just wants it to be a means where Christ is lifted up, even

in an ice cream truck in some way.

MEDITAÇÃODOEVANGELHO

17 de Outubro de 2021

29º Domingo do Tempo Comum

O itinerário de Jesus continua

preparando seus discípulos

para eventos futuros. No en-

tanto, eles ainda têm uma

maneira de pensar muito

diferente daquela que Jesus

deseja deles. Na medida em

que Tiago e João pedem as

primeiras posições quando

Jesus chega em seu reino.

Que meninos espertos! Antes

que alguém fique à frente

deles, eles perguntam.

queremos as primeiras posições, erroneamente muitas

CBERUS AS DUNTE A A

Ordinario

El itinerario de Jesús sigue y sigue

preparando a sus discípulos para

los eventos futuros. Sin embargo,

ellos tienen aún una forma muy

diferente de pensamiento de lo

que Jesús quiere de ellos. Hasta

el grado de que Santiago y Juan

piden los primeros puestos cuan-

do Jesús llegue a su reino. ¡Que

muchachos tan listos! Antes que nadie se les adelante ellos

preguntan.

(Mateo 10:38). A
