“China seeks to exploit the divi-sions among ASEAN members toplay them off each other to pressits own agenda,” McCain told a din-ner at the Center for Strategic andInternational Studies, a Washingtonthink-tank.

McCain, a champion of an asser-tive military policy, welcomed Presi-dent Barack Obama’sadministration’s defense of freedomof navigation in the South China Seabut said it should go further.

He said the United States shouldlet “other countries know, wherepossible, which claims the United

States accepts, which ones we do not,and what actions we are prepared tosupport” — especially in defense ofthe Philippines, a treaty ally.

Tensions have been rising in thepotentially resource-rich South ChinaSea and East China Sea, where Beijinghas myriad territorial disputes.

In recent weeks, Vietnam has car-ried out live-fire naval drills and thePhilippines announced plans to sendits naval flagship in contested wa-ters after incidents at sea.

McCain said he welcomed a co-operative relationship with China anddid not seek conflict, but laid theblame squarely at China’s “aggressivebehavior” and “unsubstantiated terri-torial claims” for recent tensions.

Iraqi security personnel gather at the site of a bomb attack in Mussayab, about 60 km (40miles) south of Baghdad June 21, 2011. Five people were killed and nine others woundedwhen a bomb left in a restaurant went off in Mussayab, police said.

BAGHDAD – At least 21 people were killed on Tuesday when bombs exploded at a check-point outside a provincial governor’s house in central Iraq, the latest attack targeting a govern-ment building, local authorities said.

Diwaniya said at least 22 peoplehad been killed and more than 30wounded in the attack.

Another five people were killedand nine wounded in a separate at-tack when a bomb exploded in arestaurant in the town of Mussayab, about 60 km (40 miles) south ofBaghdad, police said.

Bombings and killings in Iraqhave fallen sharply since the heightof sectarian violence in 2006-2007,but a stubborn Sunni Islamist insur-gency linked to al Qaeda, otherSunni groups and rival Shi’ite mi-litias still carry out daily attacks.

Violence has increasingly tar-geted security forces and provincialgovernment officials as U.S. troopsprepare to withdraw from the

OPEC oil producer by a year-enddeadline more than eight years af-ter the invasion to oust SaddamHussein.

Diwaniya is a poor, mainlyShi’ite region and several of Iraq’sarmed groups are active in the area.A series of bombings and attackshave hit local government buildingsin the last four months. Security of-ficials have said they expect in-creased attacks on provincial of-fices.

The Diwaniya attack followeda similar pattern to an attack on acheckpoint in Tikrit earlier thismonth when a suicide bomberdetonated his explosives as armyguards were handing over securityduty to police.

“If Bali does not offer a so-cial culture there will be pos-sibly no attraction for touriststo visit. On that account, weexpect that government in ac-cordance with its function asformulator of policy should bebrave and decisive to deter-mine the concept, vision andmission of Balinese culturaltourism,” he said.

Maintaining the culturalconcept in developing tourism, recognized Bagus Sudibya, would have an impact on cul-tural preservation, innovation, cultural creativity, interculturalharmony, employment and re-gionally generated revenue andforeign exchange. “Many im-portant roles can be imple-mented by community in thedevelopment of cultural tour-ism,” he said.

The achievement dropped 12.41pct compared to the 2.46 millionUS dollars in last year‘s same pe-riod from the export of 686,072pieces, head of the public relationsand protocol division of the Baliprovincial administration I KetutTeneng said here over the weekend.

He said Balinese handicraftworkers produced various designsof footwear products.

Ketut Teneng added that foot-

Archaeological researches inBali have found a number of ar-cheological heritages, which be-longed to prehistoric and historicremains. Prehistoric remainsproved the earliest of the people’slife, started from hunting and foodgathering through cultivation up tomastering the advanced technology.Such remains indicated the struggleand the achievement of the people’slife gradually, after adapting andexploring their environment itsnatural resources for their life, be-cause the nature was still quite dan-gerous. On the other hands, the re-mains also demonstrated the rela-tionship of the prehistoric Balinesepeople to those who lived in Java,Sumatera etc, even to the South-East Asian people.

The most important of the pre-historic live in Bali is the inventionof the metallic technology alongwith the megalithic tradition. Dur-ing the advance technology the Ba-linese people have produced sev-eral kinds of bronze goods for ritualpurpose such as kettledrums and fordaily uses as well such as axes etc.Mastering the advance technology,Balinese people have succeeded todevelop stone moulds in the villageof Manuaba (Gianyar) for castingbronze kettledrum. The human-mask decoration, showed a remark-

Bali earned 2.14 million US dollars in foreign exchange from the export of 410,620 pairs offootwear in the four months of 2011.

AntaraDENPASAR - Bali earned 2.14 million US dollars in foreign

exchange from the export of 410,620 pairs of footwear in thefour months of 2011.

wear exports are only one of theeight kind of household handicraftarticles, besides house buildingcomponents, plastics, handbags, textile and textile products.

The shipment of footwear con-tributed 1.27 pct of the Bali‘s to-tal exports worth 168.13 millionUS dollars in the first four monthsof 2011, a drop of 7.15 percentfrom the 181.08 million US dol-lars in last year‘s same period,Ketut Teneng said.

Archaeological heritage in Baliable similarities to the decorationsof the huge kettledrums found inthe village of Pejeng not so far ofthe east of Manuaba, but the stonemoulds of Manuaba are small in itssize.

It should be noted here thatbronze kettledrums were not onlyfound in Bali, but also in Java, andEastern Indonesian Island. Anotherbronze moulds made of clay werealso found in West Java, but not forproducing kettledrums, but formaking spearheads, axes, etc. Re-garding the human-mask decora-tions, which were founds on thekettledrums of Pejeng, on the stonemoulds of Manuaba and on thenumber of the sarcophagi found inBali, was regarded as symbol of theleader’s or the ancestor’s spirits. The people believed that the spirit, who were abode on the top of themountain or on the inaccessibleplace have the magic power forprotecting the living society. WhenHinduism has spread widely in In-donesia, the people believed to thesacred mountain as the place of theHindu pantheons and the ancestor’sspirit as well. Based on this con-ception, then the people built theirtemples on the mountain area suchas as Pura Besakih on the slope ofMount Agung.

Along with the development of

the metallic industry, the megalithictradition increased not only in Bali, but also in Sumatera, Flores etc.Several kinds of megalithic remainswere found there namely menhirs, dolmens, menhirstatues, steppedpyramids etc. It is a matter of factsthat the megalithic tradition havestrongly influenced the people’s lifeand it is not surprising any more thatliving megalithic tradition could befound until to present day in Nias,Toraja, Bali and Eastern Indone-sians Islands. In Bali, the megalithicremains, exe the sarcophagi are re-garded as sacred monuments andfunctioned for worshipping thjeHindu Trinity, the local deities andthe ancestor’s spirit (Sutaba 1984).

Researches on the advancedtechnology and on the megalithictradition in Bali in particular, havemade conclusions that Balinesepeople have build their social orga-nization headed by the leaders. Thewell organizations have made favor-able conditions for mastering theadvance technology. Then the socialand cultural development becamethe solid foundation for facing thenew era when Hinduism arrived inBali (Sutaba, 1930).

Bali have got Hindu-Budhis in-fluences nearly at the 9 century A.D.as Proved by the finding of claystuphikas and seals beared Budhis

formula, near the village of Pejeng,Gianyar. Then a pillar inscriptionwas rediscovered in Blanjong Sanur(Badung) which mentioned thename of the king KesariWarmadewa. This inscription wasoriginated from c.10 century A.D.Since this period, Hinduism wasspread widely in Bali and wentdeeply into the life of the Balinesepeople and then survived until to-day. Having well developed socialorganization and cultural life beforethe arrival of Hinduism, have ledthe Balinese people successfullymodified the new elements in ac-cordance with their characters andbecame the new one beared Ba-linese identity.

The well-known king of Bali isa couple royal named king Udayanaand his wife Gunapryadharmapati(c.10 century A.D), then succeededby their families. During the ancienthistory of Bali, a number of templeswere built nearly in the whole is-land. In these temple several kindsof historical remains were pre-served e.g. statues, inscriptions etc.As the follower of Hinduism, Ba-linese people regard the templesincluding the remains in them assacred monuments for worshipingthe Hindu pantheons, the local dei-ties and the ancestor’s spirit as well. This religious function was the re-

sponsibility of the Balinese peoplefor keeping the monuments in wellconditions and the welfare of theliving society.

Based on the evidence found inBali there were thousand temples, which then named Bali as “The Is-land of Thousand Temples” or “TheIsland of Paradise”. Most of the oldtemples are located in the villagebetween the two rivers calledPakerisan and Petanu namely thevillage of Bedulu, PejengandTampaksiring (Gianyar). It is re-markable that the temples foundhere originated from different pe-riod, e.g. Pura Goa Gajah, Yeh Pulurelief (Bedulu); Pura Kebo Edan,Pura Pusering Jagat, Pura PenataranSasih, Pura Ukur-ukuran, rock cuttemple Kelebutan (Pejeng); rockcut Gunung Kawi, Pura Megening,Pura Tirtha Empul, Pura Pegulinganetc (Tampaksiring). The densities ofarchaeological remains in Pejenghave led the archeologist to con-clude that probably Pejeng wasthecapital of the ancient BalineseKingdom.

Beyond the regency of gianyar, there were also a number of im-portant archeological remains e.g.Pura Tegeh Koripan, Pura Kehen(Bangli); Pura Besakih(Karangasem); the villagetemples. (IBP/Doc)

The Supervisor of MadyaBank in Indonesian Bank, AgusStiadi, said that in the same pe-

The income gained from482,670 foreign tourists whomust pay VOA when they visitedBali. The current rule stated thatnot all foreigners who come toBali must pay the fee. There threemain entrances to Bali which arePadangbai, Tanjung Benoa, andNgurah Rai International Airport.

However, most of the foreigntourists were coming through theairport. The increasing number oftourists visited Bali could givepositive effect on the economicdevelopment of the island whichmainly depends on tourism.

The high number of revenuefrom VOA was because the tour-ists stayed longer in Bali. If theystay more than a week, the VOAthat they have to pay is also moreexpensive.

IF you go to Bali, make sure to go to thevillage of Trunyan. This village is squeezedtightly between the lake and the outer craterrim of Batur, an almighty volcano inKintamani. This is a Bali Aga village, inhab-ited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of the HinduMajapahit kingdom in the 16th century.

It is famous for the Pura Pancering Jagattemple, but unfortunately visitors are notallowed inside. There are also a couple oftraditional Bali Aga-style dwellings, and alarge banyan tree, which is said to be morethan 1,100 years old. At Kuban sub-villageclose to Trunyan is a mysterious cemeterythat is separated by the lake and accessibleonly by boat - there is no path along thesteep walls of the crater rim.

The village of Trunyan itself is situatedat the edge of Batur Lake. This location isinaccessible except by boat, and it takesaround half an hour across the calm wa-ters. Getting to Lake Batur takes around twohours drive to the northeast of Denpasaralong the main road to Buleleng andthrough Bangli Regency.

Unlike the Balinese people, the people ofTrunyan do not cremate or bury their dead, but

The uniqueness of Trunyan Villagejust lay them out in bamboo cages to decom-pose, although strangely there is no stench. Amacabre collection of skulls and bones lies onthe stone platform and the surrounding areas.

The dead bodies don’t produce badsmells because of the perfumed scents froma huge Taru Menyan tree growing nearby.Taru means ‘tree’ and Menyan means ‘nicesmell’. The name of Trunyan was also de-rived from these two words.

The women from Trunyan are prohibitedfrom going to the cemetery when a dead bodyis carried there. This follows the deeply rootedbelief that if a woman comes to the cemeterywhile a corpse is being carried there, therewill be a disaster in the village, for example alandslide or a volcanic eruption. Such eventshave been frequent in the village’s history, but whether women had anything to do withit is a matter of opinion...

You can visit both the village of Trunyanand the Kuban cemetery by chartered boatfrom Kedisan. Sadly, nowadays the boattrips are now blatant tourist traps, as toutsand guides strongly urge you to donate yourcash to the temple project or leave a dona-tion for the dead. These touts ruin an oth-erwise fascinating experience.

SINGAPORE - There is a “strongpotential” that persistently high oilprices could derail the global eco-nomic recovery, the International En-ergy Agency (IEA) chief economistwarned Tuesday.

“My worry is that the current prices(are) a major risk for the global eco-nomic recovery and I’m very worriedto see the same movie that we saw inthe year 2008,” Fatih Birol said at aconference in Singapore.

“I think if they stay so, there is astrong potential we see a risk that thehigh prices, the high oil prices canderail the economic recovery,” he said.

Birol said the average price of oilthis year is $110, much higher thanthe $90 seen in 2008 when crude hit arecord above $147 before the onset ofthe global recession.

The recession lasted well into 2009,and the global rebound has so far beenslow especially for the United Statesand Europe, with Asia emerging stron-ger than the rest of the world.

The latest surge in crude prices isbeing driven mostly by China’s en-ergy-hungry economy and to lesserextent, India and the other emergingmarkets, Birol said.

“All the growth comes outside ofthe OECD countries,” he said, refer-

MUMBAI - India’s largest state-run oil explorer Oil and Natural GasCorp plans to invest $7.7 billion in developing one of India’s biggest gasfields off the eastern coast, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

ONGC is aiming to drill eight additional wells in a block in the KG basinand has sought approval from the regulator and the petroleum ministry, hesaid.

The oil giant will also explore tie-ups with foreign partners, who haveexpertise to develop hard-to-exploit reserves in the basin, he added.

“We will look for partners who have expertise in ultra deepwater drill-ing,” the spokesman said, asking not to be named.

ONGC, which produces about 30 percent of India’s crude requirement,is involved in exploring for and exploiting hydrocarbons in 26 sedimentarybasins of India.

The KG basin is India’s most prolific gas basin, where some of thecountry’s largest natural gas discoveries have taken place in recent years.

Oil and natural gas companies are raising spending on exploration andproduction, as demand and prices remain high.

Earlier this year, British giant BP agreed to pay $7.2 billion for a 30-percent stake in 23 oil and gas blocks owned by private energy giant Reli-ance Industries.

India imports about 70 percent of its total fuel needs. He declined to say who ONGC was talking to but media reports last

week said was holding discussions with the BG Group and Italian oil giantENI with a plan to sell up to a 30-percent stake in two other gas blocks, offeastern India.

“ENI and BG have evinced interest,” the Economic Times financial dailyon Tuesday quoted an unnamed ONGC official, who added it was too earlyto say if deals would be signed with either firm.

ONGC has bagged more than 50 percent of the 238 blocks awarded inbidding under India’s exploration licensing policy.

ONGC produced 27.27 million tonnes of crude oil and 25.32 billioncubic metres of gas in the year to March 2011.

Earlier this month, Toyota saidit expected net profit in this fiscalyear to drop 31 percent on-year to$3.5 billion on a strong yen and theeffect on production of the Marchdisasters.

The automaker said it expectedto stage a recovery in the secondhalf as supply problems caused bythe earthquake fade, but warned thecurrent strength of the Japanese cur-rency made domestic productiontoo expensive.

The 9.0-magnitude earthquakeand the resulting tsunami left 23,000dead or missing, destroyed entiretowns and crippled electricity-gen-

Amid power and parts shortages,Toyota and other Japanese firmsannounced production disruptionsdomestically and overseas becauseof the crisis, temporarily slowingoutput or shutting plants.

Toyota has said production isexpected to fully recover by No-vember.

It said the disaster — which con-tributed to a 77 percent net profitfall in the fourth quarter — will re-duce its global production by450,000 units, and result in a 360billion yen hit to operating profitthis year.

LOS ANGELES – The Marilyn Monroe dress that flirted reveal-ingly with a gust of New York subway air in “The Seven Year Itch”fetched a record $4.6 million at an auction of film memorabilia.

“The Seven Year Itch,” Monroe’scharacter cooled off by standingover a subway grate to catch thebreeze as a train sped underneath— which sent her dress north andexposed a shocking amount of legand undergarment for a 1955 movie.

The costume’s price set tworecords, according to Profiles in His-tory: It surpassed the $1.26 millionpaid for the dress Monroe wore whenshe sang “Happy Birthday” to Presi-dent John F. Kennedy, and it becamethe most expensive film costume sold.

That honor had belonged toHepburn’s black dress from “Break-fast at Tiffany’s,” which sold for$923,000, the auction house said.

More modest but still impressivebids at Saturday’s auction in BeverlyHills and online included $540,000for a Grace Kelly costume from “ToCatch a Thief,” $140,000 for a gui-

tar used by Julie Andrews in “TheSound of Music” and $100,000 fora “Cleopatra” headdress thatadorned Elizabeth Taylor.

Reynolds, 79, started collectingfour decades ago at auctions held bymajor film studios, including MGMand Fox, and eventually acquired3,500-plus items. The auction meantthe end of a dream for Reynolds, who starred as a teenager with GeneKelly in “Singin’ in the Rain” andwas an Oscar nominee for “TheUnsinkable Molly Brown.”

Reynolds’ combined casino-hoteland memorabilia museum in Las Ve-gas closed and she had planned to re-locate the museum to Pigeon Forge,Tenn. Last year, Reynolds’ son, ToddFisher, said the project had to file forbankruptcy protection and the collec-tion would be sold to satisfy creditors.

Reynolds, who still performs innightclubs and theaters and remainsthe petite, pretty blonde who capturedKelly’s heart in their 1952 musical, expressed regret in an interview lastweek. But she looked on the bright sideas well.

MADRID – Barcelona will refuse to pay 40 million euros (35 millionpounds) for Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas although he “really wants” totransfer, according to Barcelona president Sandro Rosell.

“I don’t know if we will sign Cesc or not. What I have no doubt of is thathe really wants to come to Barca,” Rosell told Catalan television TV3 in aninterview late Monday.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola knows that every player has a value“and that Cesc is worth less than 40 million. We will offer less than 40million and if Arsenal don’t accept it, Cesc won’t come,” Rosell said.

“This year we won’t offer the same as last year because a year has goneby and Cesc today is not worth 40 million.” Gunners coach Arsene Wengerhad insisted last month that he was determined to spend a second succes-sive summer fighting off mighty Barcelona to keep Fabregas at the Emir-ates.

But Spanish media say he has since decided not to fight the move. TheGunners turned down a bid from the Spanish champions last year for aplayer who spent his junior days at Barcelona before joining Arsenal at theage of 16 in 2003. “I am a Barca supporter. I am a member like my grand-father, my uncle, my cousin,” Fabregas said last year.

“I love their colours since I was very small. I am Catalan. However, I amcaptain of Arsenal, I am a Gunner and it is there that I have become a playerand that I have matured as a person.”

Rosell, who took over as president from Joan Laporta in July 2010,also said “nothing was closed” regarding the transfer of Chilean interna-tional forward Alexis Sanchez from Italian side Udinese.

Spanish sports media have said the 22-year-old, who is under contractwith Udinese until June 2014, is close to joining the European champi-ons.

“We don’t have money for signings. When we arrived we saw that theclub’s debt was much higher than what was being stated,” the Barcelonapresident added when asked about the possibility of signing either Sanchezor Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi from Villarreal. “Only one of the two willcome,” he said said. Rosell said cost-cutting measures put in place since hebecame president “were necessary for the sustainability of the club”. Ban-ning colour photocopies alone “saves us 300,000 euros”, he said.

Shortly after Rosell’s arrival, Barcelona secured a 150 million euro bankloan to help pay player and staff wages.

CLEVELAND – The agent for Turkish center Enes Kanter doesn’tthink the Cleveland Cavaliers have decided who they’ll take with theNo. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft. On Monday, Kanter had his secondprivate workout with the Cavaliers, who own the Nos. 1 and 4 overallpicks in Thursday’s draft.

Agent Max Ergul said the 6-foot-11 Kanter, who has raw skills butimposing, ready-for-the-pros size, met with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert.

“Enes told me he liked it,” said Ergul, who believes the club is stillweighing its options. “I have no prediction with what they are going todo and I think they are going to wait and take it down to the very lastmoment. And why should they announce it now? That would ruin thesurprise.”

The Cavs have been extremely guarded in their plans for this draft, which they hope can speed their rebuilding in the aftermath of LeBronJames’ departure and a 63-loss season. Cleveland has been intention-ally silent because the club wants to keep its options open and poten-tially raise the interest in a player to make a trade.

In addition to its first-round picks, the Cavs have two selections inthe second round (Nos. 32 and 54) and own a $14.5 million trade excep-tion they got in a sign-and-trade with Miami last summer in the deal forJames.

Duke point guard Kyrie Irving has been Cleveland’s expected choiceat No. 1, and the Cavs were the only team the 6-foot-4 player workedout for this spring. Irving played in only 11 games as a freshman for theBlue Devils because of a foot injury he says has healed completely.

Also on Monday, the Cavs hosted Kentucky point guard BrandonKnight and Arizona forward Derrick Williams. Knight, who averaged17.3 points and 4.2 assists last season, could be an option for the Cavs ifthey take Kanter or Williams instead of Irving at No. 1, but that seemsunlikely.

Kanter is somewhat of a mystery to most NBA fans. He hasn’t playedbasketball in nearly a year after being ruled ineligible at Kentucky. Inthe past few weeks he has worked out for several teams, showing off hissolid post moves and a better-than-average perimeter game.
