enough to rely on the national food se-curity. Despite conditions of food se-curity is important, the food security onself-sufficiency basis is much moreimportant.

A professor of the Udayana Univer-sity, Prof. Dr. Nyoman Suparta, statedthat Bali belonged to the food securecategory because the food demands ofthe population remained to be fulfilled. It was indicated by the sufficiency ofequitable and affordable food stock forthe community. “Yet, Bali could notcontinue to depend on the supply ofother regions. We must be able to be-come a self-sufficient region to avoidthe food crisis and achieve food secu-rity,” said Suparta to Bali Post, Thurs-day (Mar 17).

In the meantime, Chair-man of the Indonesian TourGuides Association (HPI)Nyoman Kandia previouslycomplained about the ac-tion of illegal tour guidescamouflaging as a driverwas very detr imental totour i s t s and lega l tourguides.

Kandia pointed that Re-gional Regulations govern-ing the presence of travelagencies in Bali was pow-erless because it was unableto cope with the rampantprac t ice o f i l l ega l tourguides. “The existence ofRegional Regulation gov-erning the existence of tourguides is not functioningoptimally. As consequence, the presence of illegal tourguides is turning rampant inBali up to these days,” hesaid.

He added that legal tourguides should obtain certi-fication (license) and train-ing from local institutions.“We do hope that the lawsset forth are not merelymade as display, but i tshould be able to make theillegal tour guides as well asemployers of illegal travelagencies deterrent,” he said.

Bali Police Mobile Brigade to fur-ther examine the contents of thepackage.

Bomb squad unit coming to loca-tion instantly checked up the pack-age. One of the officers in anti-bombrobot suit approached the packageand had time to remove the padlockchain. Then, he took an X-ray pho-tograph. From the result of X-rayimage, the squad unit had not daredto ascertain whether it contained anexplosive or not as the image showedsomething like a wire coil. On thataccount, the further action taken wasto disrupt it by low-powered explo-sion.

Having been declared safe, twoofficers of the bomb squad unit se-cured the content of the package. From a distance, the contents wereseen in the form of pliers, wrenches, chains, pulleys, nails, rope and othercarpenter’s tools. After the case,Chief of Gianyar Police called onthe public to remain vigilant. Whenfound any suspicious objects, theyshould be quickly reported to po-lice station.

Further examination

In response to the suspicious pack-age, police did not know yet who ownedthe package. Police were still investi-gating the ownership of the goods. “Weare still investigating it whether it wasintentionally placed so as not to be takenor driven by other motive,” he explained.Meanwhile, a number of suspicionssaying the package were a bombkindled a doubt in the community in-cluding the police. Based on observation at location, thepackage was bound by chains with pad-lock on iron pipe in front of the PondokWisata Gianyar, right on Jalan Manik. Some estimation came into view thatit belonged to a push cart trader. Itwas supported by the existence ofthe package accompanied with apadlock. Additionally, it could pos-sibly belong to a carpenter or someothers. “Police are still figuring outwho owns the package,” said the Po-lice Chief. (kmb16)

To avoid food crisis

Bali should become a self-contained regionside Bali such as rice, beans, corn, fishand vegetables. Therefore, if there wasany disruption in distribution, it couldpossibly cause a crisis. On that account,he recommended Bali to self-suffice asaspired by other regions.

“Bali is still capable of achievingself-sufficiency, provided there is astrong commitment and togetherness.Hard work of farmers and consistencyof human resources becomes a key tosuccessful application of technology, while improving the income and wel-fare of farmers,” he said.

Nevertheless, to achieve the self-suf-ficiency, Bali remained to face severalobstacles, such as the diminishing avail-ability of farm land due to land conver-sion or lack of water, irrigation wateravailability tending to decline, availabil-ity and application of effective farmingtechnologies and so forth.

“Indeed, it requires a hard work of

all parties together with farmers to makethe food self-sufficiency a reality in Bali.Complexity of the existing problemsmust be addressed wisely and prudentlythrough togetherness,” he said.

An observer of agriculture from theThird World Network, Hira Jhamtani, said the conversion of productive landin Bali was turning unstoppable. Highdemand of land conversion in Bali wascaused by rapid population growth. Inkeeping with the growth and develop-ment, various threats came up thesustainability of agriculture such as thereduction of agricultural land.

“Production of the agriculturalcommodities in Bali such as rice isvery popular in Indonesia as it has thebest quality. Similarly, its horticulturalcommodities such as citrus, mangosten and others are also verywell known, but this condition isgradually shrinking,” he said. (par)

Agence France PresseIPSWICH, Australia – Prince William wowed crowds in

Queensland’s flood-devastated southeast on Sunday as Prime Min-ister Julia Gillard reiterated her belief that the country should be-come a republic. Thousands turned up to glimpse the prince as hevisited the northern Queensland towns of Cardwell and Tully onSaturday, and the admirers were out on force again on Sunday.

Queensland has been hit by a series of natural disasters this year, with massive floods covering an area bigger than France and Ger-many combined, which swamped the state capital Brisbane. The dra-matic flash floods in January swept away entire homes, killing morethan 30 people, and within days Queensland was facing another di-saster in Cyclone Yasi, which smashed the state with ferocious windsand lashing rains.

On Sunday, William visited the West Moreton Anglican Collegein Ipswich, where he was greeted by hundreds of squealing students. The personable prince, dressed casually in an open-necked shirt withhis sleeves rolled up, mouthed “hello” as he stepped out of his carand greeted as many people as possible.

The prince, who marries his fiancee KateMiddleton at Westminster Abbey on April 29, was to end a busy dayin Brisbane at a 500 dollars (497 US) a head fundraiser for disastervictims.

“He’s been putting smiles on people’s faces, he’s really been reach-ing out to people,” Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale told reporters. Amongthe onlookers was Beth Clark, who saw the Queen in 1954. “We alsogot married the same time as the Queen, my husband and I, in No-vember 1947,” she said. Kate Woolf drove for 40 minutes to see theprince.

“I’m here to see the prince because he’s gorgeous and becauseit’s probably the only time he’ll ever come to Ipswich,” she said. While William’s visit has been a public relations success, the Welsh-born Gillard believes Australia, a former British colony, should be-come a republic.

“Inevitably, we will continue to debate and work through whenthis nation wants to become a republic,” she told Sky News whenasked if she thought Australia would be a republic by the time Wil-liam becomes king. “It’s not a debate at the forefront of our nationalconversations at the moment, but I believe it will return.

Palin warns of China’s rise in visit to IndiaPalin told a well-heeled audience

of Indian business leaders, profes-sionals and socialites that U.S.-In-dian relations were “key to the fu-ture of our world.” “We’re going toneed each other, especially as theseother regions rise,” she said, in anapparent reference to China, duringa Q&A that followed a keynotespeech titled “My Vision ofAmerica.” “Free people that makeup a free country don’t wage waron another free country,” she said.“I want peace on Earth.”

She questioned the Chinesemilitary’s ascent, saying the Com-munist country’s stockpiling of bal-listic missiles, submarines and“new-age, ultramodern aircraft”seemed unjustified when it did not

face an outside threat. “What’s withthe military buildup?” she said.“China’s military growth can’t justbe for defensive purposes.”

Reporters who had been assuredaccess were barred at the last minute. But the speech was shown on Indiantelevision and in a live webcast.

Palin was coy about whether sheplanned to run for the White House, but at times sounded like she wascampaigning. She took a swipe atPresident Barack Obama and whatshe described as his “dithering” re-sponse to the political upheaval inthe Middle East, saying he “shouldhave done more for Arab protesters.”

Obama visited India in Novem-ber during a wider Asian tour, affirm-ing the country’s growing impor-

tance on the global scene. Palin saidthe Republican Party’s apparatuswas at times frustrating to deal with, but said presidents Ronald Reaganand Abraham Lincoln were rolemodels and reasons for why shejoined the party.

She also took aim at one of herfavorite targets, the U.S. media. Sheaccused them of failing “to set therecord straight” and joked that theywillfully cost her and McCain the2008 election.

“I will not sit back and take mediacriticism,” Palin said. “Too often, Re-publicans, I don’t know, they kind ofhave the fighting instinct of sheep.”Palin is due to meet with Israeli PrimeMinister Benjamin Netanyahu duringher visit to the Jewish state.

CAIRO – Egyptians flocked to the polls on Saturday for the first timesince President Hosni Mubarak was toppled to vote in a referendum onpolitical reform marred by an attack on presidential candidate MohamedElBaradei. Youths pushed and hurled missiles at the former head of theU.N. nuclear watchdog as he tried to vote in the constitutional referen-dum which will determine how quickly Egypt can hold elections.

Observers said there appeared tohave been an unprecedented turnoutfor the first Egyptian ballot in livingmemory whose outcome was notknown in advance.

“I’m 53 and I have never votedbefore because they were all rigged,”said Ahmed al-Hami, one of closeto 100 people waiting in line to voteat a polling station in a suburb southof Cairo. “Now I am voting for free-dom,” he said.

LOOMING ELECTIONSVoters were being asked to ap-

prove or reject proposed reformsdrafted by a judicial committee ap-pointed by the country’s militaryrulers, who have pledged to holdearly elections. They took powerfrom Mubarak when he was forced

from office on February 11 by anuprising that continues to reverber-ate across the Arab world.

The referendum has dividedEgyptians between those who saythe constitution needs to be com-pletely rewritten and others who ar-gue amendments will suffice fornow. “Judging from what I saw inmany stations, the turnout willrange between 60 and 70 percentwhich is unprecedented,” GamalEid, a monitor, said. “We have notseen any forgery today. What wesaw was a true will to make thevoting process fair.”

The Muslim Brotherhood, a wellorganized Islamist group, hasbacked the amendments, setting itat odds with secular groups and re-form advocates includingElBaradei and Arab League chiefAmr Moussa, who is also a presi-dential candidate. Remnants ofMubarak’s National DemocraticParty (NDP) have also said theysupport the amendments. Reform-ists see members of the party as onethreat to the deep changes they areseeking.

The first public appearance of“Cute Knut” in March 2007 at-tracted 100 camera crews fromaround the world.

He generated millions of euros(dollars) for the Berlin Zoo in lu-crative merchandising and extra

entrance fees. Twice-daily appear-ances allowed the public to watchKnut splash in a pond, jump onrocks and play with his handler, who had carefully removed thenewborn from his aggressivemother’s cage.

Tourists talking with street vendor at Kuta beach. Japanese tourists had canceled at least 1,000rooms at a number of hotels in Bali following the devastating quake and subsequent tsunami whichhit their country last Friday.

said here Friday. On the fourth and fifth day fol-

lowing the quake and subsequenttsunami, especial ly after thenuclear reactor has developed aleak, many more of the Japanesetourists had canceled their trip tothe island paradise, causing a greatdeal of loss to the hotel owners, hesaid.

However, he fully understoodthe reason of the Japanese touriststo cancel their holidays to Bali.

Ngurah Wijaya also admittedthat the decline in the number of

Japanese tourists to Bali had actu-ally been going in 2009 and 2010,reaching 25 pct.

The number of Japanese touristsin Sanur alone, he said, reachedonly 20 percent of the total num-ber of foreign tourists from othercountries.

Therefore he is considering spe-cial measures and plans to promotethe island paradise in Japan be-cause their number had alwaysbeen more than those of othercountries, and its first position haseven been taken over by Australia.

Cancel Program, said here Saturday.Peter made the statement when

accompanying Indonesian HealthMinister Endang R Sedyaningsih ona visit to a Community Health Cen-ter (Puskesmas) in downtownTabanan, around 27 kilometers north-west of Denpasar.

The visit was part of activities con-ducted by participants of a conferenceof the Asia-Oceania Research Orga-nization on Genital Infections andNeoplasm being held in Nusa Dua.

At the Puskesmas the conferenceparticipants witnessed a demonstra-

tion of the application of the visualinspection by acetate acid (VIA)method to prevent cervical cancer.

Peters is also a gynecologist atLeiden University, the Netherlands. He also did some research on theprogress of cancer cells in woman’sreproductive organs in the last decade.

“We know that vaccine is a curefor this cancer causing virus. Butthe effectiveness is only 70 percentso far. It means that there is still a30 percent failure rate and this mayhave been caused by many things. One of them is the woman’s male

partner,” he said.In other words, he said, “Even if

a woman has been vaccinated, itdoesn’t mean she is absolutely freefrom cervical cancer. Remember, there is a 30 percent failure rate,”he said.

He admitted the challenges ofpersuading men to be vaccinatedagainst HPV. In the Netherlands it-self, he said, it was still not so easything to do.

Another challenge was themedicine’s price that was still high.“It’s still very expensive even for

Europeans, about 100 US dollarsper vial, so may be the producersshould do something to lower it,” hesaid.

Other thing that made eradicat-ing HPV difficult was the fact thatHPV does not need an animal hostto multiply. HPV was a so-called“smart” virus capable mutating.

“HPV enters the human bodythrough skin, particularly the softtissue inside our body. It maychange and affect many organs, from cervical cancer to malfunctionof kidney or brain,” he said.

Teep Beans:Lazing while Enjoying Slow Snack

Among thedelicacy ofBalinese foodwith hot spices,in fact, Balinesecommunity alsoretains easy-peasy snack butsometimes a bitharder. One ofthem is thebean of teep. Itstree resemblesto that ofbreadfruit. However, its beans are far smallercompared to that of breadfruit. When its fruitshave turned ripe, they usually attract the presenceof civet. Actually, this nocturnal cat is onlyinterested to eat the flesh of fruit. Similar thingalso happens to coffee beans. Since the skin ofbeans is hard it cannot digest them so civet couldonly enjoy the flesh. On the next day, those seedscould be found at the feces of civet. All seedsremain intact. However, if people see the ripefruits first, they will not need to wait the coming ofcivet to pick them.

To process the beans, they are first cleansedthoroughly and dry under the sun. Afterward, theyshould be fried without oil but sand. When they havebeen finely cooked they can be enjoyed whilerelaxing or lazing. As the shell and beans are slightlyhard, it may take a bit long time to open and chewthem. However, if they are indeed dry enough andcooked well they must be easy to open and crispy. They are good to consume as slow snack whilechatting or watching TV. (BTN/punia)

TABANAN – Indonesian HealthMinister, Endang R Sedyaningsih, stated that hospitals throughout Indo-nesia must be able to manage cancertherapy and their ability must be de-veloped in terms of the human re-sources and the equipments.

“This is one of the challenges thatcurrently faced by the hospitals espe-cially after the government committedto emphasizes on the preventive mea-sure rather than the curative one,” sheadded.

Sedyaningsing is in Bali to take partin the Genital Infection and NeoplasmResearch Organization Meting for Asiaand Oceanic Region (AOGIN). Themain focus of the meeting is cervixcancer, the number two female killerafter breast cancer.

There are also several hospitalsthroughout Indonesia that is able to useradiology technique in handling can-cer such as Cipto Mangunkusomo Hos-pital and Dharmais Cancer Hospital.

The expensive radiology equip-ments which cost around 20 billionrupiah make many hospitals findingdifficulties in having the equipment notto mention the difficult process in get-ting the license. Indonesian Govern-ment prepared 27 trillion rupiah for

health sector this year where 49 goes tothe prevention steps and the rest is forthe handling process. “The cervix can-cer only can be cured by radiologymethod in the early stages so the gov-ernment is committed to prevent thespread of the disease,” the Minister said.

Economic aftershocks of the dev-astation in Japan are rolling throughAsia. It is here, among Japan’s neigh-bors, that the reverberations of thecatastrophe are being felt hardest.

Automakers in Thailand are slow-ing production. South Korean elec-tronics manufacturers face shortagesof critical parts. Thousands of Japa-nese have canceled trips to Taiwan.Panic buying has driven up prices ofJapanese cameras in China, whileIndian policymakers brace for higheroil prices.

Their remaining focus will beon meeting a self-imposed dead-line for a “comprehensive” re-sponse to a roller-coaster eurodebt crisis aimed at soothing ner-vous money markets.

The European Union’s eco-nomic in-tray is full.

The summit must strengthen anexisting 440-billion-euro tempo-rary rescue fund, while agreeinga change to the EU treaty rule-book to enable the creation of a500-billion-euro permanent fundfrom 2013, the European Stabil-ity Mechanism (ESM).

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON– U.S. regulators gave major banksincluding JPMorgan Chase & Co thegreen light on Friday to boost divi-dends, loosening the reins on the in-dustry 2-1/2 years after the govern-ment bailed out the financial system.

The strongest banks, includingJPMorgan, are entitled to raise divi-dends and buy back shares in a mat-ter of weeks, while weaker banks, including SunTrust Banks Inc, wereauthorized to issue shares and payback government bailout money.

The Federal Reserve tested howbanks would fare if the economywere to come under more pressure,in another round of stress tests nearlytwo years after the first round. Euro-pean banks face similar tests.

Banks received billions of dollarsof rescue funds from the governmentin 2008 and 2009 after suffering hugelosses in a credit crunch. But in 2010the banking system turned a profit, emboldening regulators to permitbanks to return money to sharehold-ers through dividends and buybacks.

“This is one of the final steps interms of showing the redemption ofthe banks from 2008,” said MattMcCormick, a portfolio manager atCincinnati-based Bahl & Gaynor In-vestment Counsel, which owns bankstocks.

Banks are still recovering from thefinancial crisis, and the Federal Re-serve has still kept some restrictionson their payouts to shareholders.

The central bank said on Friday itwas generally restricting dividendpayments to 30 percent or less of thecompany’s expected earnings in2011— a ratio well below the 50percent level paid out during bettertimes.

But a flurry of banks announcedplans to return capital to sharehold-ers on Friday. Wells Fargo & Co, thefourth-largest bank, said it was pay-ing a 12 cent per share dividend forthe first quarter, compared with aprior level of 5 cents.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc saidit was buying back $5 billion of pre-ferred shares from Warren Buffett’sBerkshire Hathaway, ending a costlydeal that shored up confidence in thebank at the height of the financialcrisis.

“This gets the banks some inves-tor credibility. If you’re a retail in-

BRUSSELS – Europe’s leaders put the finishing touches to their response to a year-long debtcrisis this week, as financial strain in Portugal threatens a third bailout after Greece and Ireland.

governance.A eurozone leaders’ summit on

March 11 saw countries most di-rectly concerned agree to increasefunding to the temporary mecha-nism in order to make the full 440billion Euros available to countriesin trouble. Currently almost half isheld back as a guarantee to keepborrowing rates down.

They also agreed to allow thefund to buy bonds directly fromgovernments in need of finance, al-though only within the straitjacketof a bailout.

This left the European CentralBank unhappy. The ECB reluc-tantly took on the role of support-ing struggling eurozone countriesby buying billions of Euros of theirbonds on secondary markets tokeep interest rates down, andwanted to hand that role to theESM.

Eurozone leaders also decidedto reduce the rate of interestcharged Greece on its bailout loansand lengthened the repayment pe-riod, in principle making supportcheaper for all countries faced witha financial emergency.

But a row with Ireland over itslow corporate tax rate meant therewere no favors for Dublin — aquestion sure to return to the sum-mit agenda.

More generally, leaders also setout guidelines on economic indi-

cators to be used to benchmarkeurozone nations to improve andbetter harmonize their economiccompetitiveness.

European trade unions are plan-ning protests on Thursday to de-cry the biting austerityprogrammes imposed by govern-ments in the wake of the debt cri-sis.

Ahead of the March 24-25 sum-mit, finance ministers will use anextraordinary meeting on Mondayto try to settle remaining issues.

Time is running out after a pe-riod of relative calm, with Portu-gal struggling after a downgrade bythe influential Moody’s credit rat-ing agency and facing a growinglikelihood of early elections as theopposition opposes a new auster-ity programme.

Britain, the Netherlands, Swe-den, Denmark, Finland, Estonia,Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, meanwhile want to prioritize a realopening-up of the EU economy, theworld’s largest tariff-free area with500 million consumers and 12 tril-lion Euros of economic activity.

Removing restrictions, acceler-ating free-trade deals with India,Canada, Japan, Mercosur and theAsian nations, as well as deepen-ing economic integration with non-EU eastern European and southernMediterranean nations is their pre-scription.

By the time you’reable to switch sources the crisis willbe over.”

Profits at Taiwanese electronicsfirms will likely slump in the secondquarter due to shortages of Japanesecomponents, said Alex Huang, an ana-lyst at Taipei’s Mega Securities Corp.

Albion currently does not ownany bank stocks, but Ware said thedividend increases have made thefirm more interested in buying intothe sector.

In this second round of stresstests, the Fed had banks submit theirown analyses of whether they couldwithstand adverse economic condi-tions. In 2009, the Fed played amuch larger role in analyzing banks’capital.

Banks historically have paid divi-dends, but often have trouble cut-ting their payouts when times gettough, for fear of panicking inves-tors. In the years leading up to thecrisis, banks paid out billions ofdollars to investors, through divi-dends and share buybacks, even asthe financial system grew shaky.

The stress tests are not over. Un-der the Dodd-Frank law tighteningregulation of the financial industry, large banks and other financial firmsare required to conduct stress testsat least once a year.

Three of the 19 largest bankshave yet to repay the U.S. bailoutaid they took at the height of the fi-nancial crisis.

But investors hailed plans by twoof the three, SunTrust Banks Inc andKeycorp, to do so as another sign ofthe industry’s recovery.

“That’s very good,” saidMarshall Front, chairman and chiefinvestment officer at Front BarnettAssociates in Chicago, who ownsbank stocks.

Regions Financial Corp, the lastremaining TARP holdout in thegroup of 19, said the company didnot propose any capital action in itsregulatory review, and will repayTARP in a “prudent manner, onshareholder-friendly terms.”

Investors have been eager forbanks to restore quarterly payoutsafter they were suspended or slashedto as little as a penny a share at theheight of the 2007-2009 financialcrisis.

According to the Fed, commonequity increased by more than $300billion at the big banks from the endof 2008 through 2010.

Will the effects of the world’sworst nuclear accident ever go away?In time, maybe, but in this genera-tion, the Chernobyl consequencescan seem like an endless run of rap-ids as studies detect possible newproblems. Perhaps the only questionwith a possible concrete answer ishow much it will cost to makeChernobyl reasonably safe. At least1.6 billion euros — but 740 millioneuros of that has yet to be found.

KESENNUMA, Japan – Thehorror of Japan’s tsunami has raisedconcerns over the long-term impacton children, some of whom are al-ready displaying signs of trauma, from screaming nightmares to silentwithdrawal. According to the char-ity Save the Children, around100,000 children were displaced bywhat has become Japan’s worst natu-ral disaster since 1923, with nearly20,000 people dead or missing.

The potential for lasting traumais compounded by the unusual mul-tiple nature of the event: a massive9.0 earthquake, a devastating tsu-nami and a nationwide scare over apossible meltdown at a nuclearplant. Experts say the scale of theloss and disruption for some chil-dren would have been almost incon-ceivable: homes destroyed, friendsdisappeared, one or both parentsmaybe killed, or siblings and otherclose family members missing.

Initial efforts to help them cometo terms with the tragedy can onlybe made in extremely stressful cir-cumstances, with families packedinto ill-equipped evacuation shel-ters, suffering bitterly cold nightsand frequent terrifying aftershocks.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A small meteorite that crashed through the roof of a Virginia medi-cal office last year is becoming part of the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History in Wash-ington.

The Smithsonian paid $10,000 for the meteorite to Marc Gallini and Frank Ciampi, theLorton, Va. doctors who found it. They have in turn given the $10,000 check to the DoctorsWithout Borders charity.

Museum spokesman Randall Kremer said Saturday the meteorite is part of the museum’sresearch collection. The Smithsonian holds the world’s largest collection of natural historyspecimens and artifacts.

Meteorites are lucrative, and after the tennis-ball-sized rock fell from the sky and landed inan examination room in the office in January 2010, the landlords at the doctors’ building madea legal claim to it. But that claim was later dropped.

PRIPYAT, Ukraine – The ruins of a city call up questions in themind, and this high-rise ghost town where the Chernobyl nuclearpower plant workers once lived raises a daunting number of them. How many people have died, or may die in the future, because of theApril 26, 1986, reactor explosion that spewed radioactive fallout acrossmuch of the Northern Hemisphere? The only clear answer is “toomany” — the number is still hotly debated.

Japan may not have fully learnedChernobyl’s clearest lessons — thatcandor about a catastrophe is key.Authorities there are coming underincreasing criticism from the interna-tional community as well as their ownpeople for failing at full disclosure.

Still, the Japanese have been moreforthcoming than Soviet officials, who were variously secretive, defen-

sive and bewildered about the plant inwhat is now Ukraine. There was no of-ficial acknowledgment of the blast un-til three days later; the first indicationsof trouble came from a Swedish nuclearplant where unusual levels of radiationwere detected on workers’ clothes.

“At that time, for a day and a halfwe did not know anything about whathad happened,” Mikhail Gorbachev, who was then Soviet leader, saidTuesday. Even in Pripyat, few knewwhat had happened when the plant’sNo. 4 reactor blew up around 1:30 inthe morning.

HECTOR Barbera is confidentthat he has the race pace to build onhis surprise sixth place on the QatarGrand Prix grid. The Aspar riderequalled his MotoGP career-bestqualifying position at Losail on Sat-urday night, as he produced a shock

Rossi said that the bike’s perfor-mance was encouraging in qualify-ing, but that by the end of the ses-sion pain from his shoulder - whichunderwent surgery over the winterfollowing a Motocross accident ear-lier in 2010 - was preventing himfrom pushing to the maximum.

“I think that without my shoul-der problem, which is causing us tolose five or six tenths, we could havebeen on the second row today, be-cause we were able to improve theset-up by making changes that willalso be important in the foreseeablefuture,” he said.

“Today I was able to ride theGP11 better, but by the time we usedthe soft tyre at the end of the ses-sion, my strength was gone. When Itried to do my lap time, there weresome parts of the track where I justcouldn’t push. “Anyway, we got anokay time and we still have some

Rossi: Poorgrid slot dueto shoulder

things we can try in the warm-up.”He believes only Casey Stoner and

Dani Pedrosa’s Hondas are out of reachfor the Ducati - but admitted his shoul-der might decide his race form as well.“I think that as long as my shoulderlasts, we’ll be able to have a pace that’srelatively competitive, apart from thetwo Hondas,” Rossi said.

“We’ll see how it goes from aphysical point of view in the secondhalf of the race, after 11 or 12 lapsin a row riding on the limit.” Rossi’steam-mate Nicky Hayden was anunhappy 13th on the other Ducati.

“It was pretty much the same waythat it has been all weekend. I justclearly wasn’t fast enough,” he said.“We tried something toward the startof the session that was very similarto last year’s set-up, but it didn’twork. I got back on my other bikeand had one decent lap going, but Imade a mistake in the last corner.

Barbera sure he can stay near topby outpacing all the other Ducatisin the field.

Barbera was ecstatic to start hisseason with such an achievement. “Iam really happy because at the firstround of the season I have alreadyequalled my best grid from the

whole of last year,” he said. “We arepretty close to third place and aftera long and hard winter, with all thesacrifices we have to make, it hasall been worthwhile.”

He had also been sixth in finalpractice and third on Thursday, though this was put down to gettinga tow at the right moment.

However Barbera insisted that hecould show consistent pace in racetrim. “We have done well in eachsession so far but the only one thatcounts is tomorrow,” he acknowl-edged.

“Our race pace is in the low1m56s and all being well tomorrowthat should see us inside the topeight, which would be a good re-sult.

“I think I have a great bike andwe are ready. The only doubt is overtyre choice but we’ll probably go forthe harder option.

“I guess there’ll be a group fromfourth place down to ninth and Ihope to be in it. We will need tomake a strong start and push hardfor the first few laps to stay in there.”
