“It’s open to everyone,” the 47-year-old Canadian singer told French radio station RTL in an interview. “Any artist or composer can send me their art.”

The unusual appeal by the

singer, most famous for per-forming “My Heart Will Go On” as the theme song for the hit 1997 movie “Titanic”, came as she returned to the stage in Las Vegas for 40 concerts in the US

gambling city.Dion had taken a hiatus from

the Vegas show and from the rest of her career last year to help take care of her ailing 73-year-old hus-band Rene Angelil, who has throat cancer. Now she will return to give performances into 2019.

Any songs chosen from submis-

sions already coming in will go towards her two upcoming albums. She aims to release the first, in French, next year and the second, in English, in 2017.

“They can be songs that let me reach new goals, to progress, to have a good time, to be passion-ate -- because I would very much

like to keep moving forward,” she said.

She said she wanted to continue her career “as much as possible,” adding: “I can’t tell you right now who I’ll be working with.”

Her last album, “Loved Me Back to Life”, came out in 2013. (afp)

LAGOS, Nigeria — African stars joined U2 frontman Bono on Friday in a campaign to use music to help empower women around the world.

Bono and top African male musicians D’banj, Diamond and Banky W announced that they will be included in a remix of the song “Strong Girl,” a rallying cry for women’s empowerment which fea-tures top African female talent.

Bono, whose ONE advocacy group is the creative force behind the campaign for women’s em-powerment, said music can create awareness and help shift policies because politicians are driven by popular things.

“Politicians in the end have to be elected, and what is popular drives all of their decisions. It’s that simple. So if the subject is popular among the electorate, then it sud-denly dawns on politicians that this is a subject they, too, feel strongly about,” Bono told reporters.

Sipho Moyo, Africa executive director of ONE, said the campaign hopes to create structural and policy changes globally that will ensure women are empowered. The ulti-mate goal is to eradicate extreme

poverty in 2030, Moyo said.Moyo said next month’s U.N.

meeting that will set the world’s development agenda for the next 15 years should focus on boosting women’s access to health, eco-nomic empowerment and political participation.

That agenda addresses issues ranging from ending poverty “in all its forms everywhere” to ensuring quality education and affordable and reliable energy. It will be ad-opted at a summit just before the annual meeting of world leaders at the General Assembly in late September. (ap)

LONDON — Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett will receive a major career honor at this year’s London Film festival, where two of her latest films are screening.

The Australian actress will be pre-sented with the British Film Institute Fellowship at an Oct. 17 ceremony. BFI chairman Greg Dyke said Thurs-

day that Blanchett was “a compelling and brave actress whose mesmerizing screen presence has captivated audi-ences since her earliest roles.”

Blanchett has won Oscars for “The Aviator” and “Blue Jas-mine.”

She’ll appear at the London festival in Todd Haynes’ 1950s

lesbian romance “Carol,” as well as in James Vanderbilt’s “Truth,” which stars Blanchett as TV news producer Mary Mapes, who was fired over a story about former U.S. President George W. Bush’s military service.

The London Film Festival runs Oct. 7-18. (ap)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, deco-rations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrel-las soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Hatten Wine, a wine company in Sanur promoting local wine has a proven record and international reputation. Celebrating a Decade of the SVF 2015, it comes out to present a no less attractive festival. Ida Bagus Rai Budarsa, the owner of the Hatten Wine, initiated the Grape Stamp event. Like an Inter-national Wine Festival, the Hatten Wine designs the attraction aiming to provide information, education as well celebration that local wine of Bali can compete in interna-tional market.

A total of 800 kg of green grapes are stamping by nearly a hundred visitors in turns. Gus Rai, the af-fectionate address of man winning some international wine awards, told that it is meant to demonstrate to the SVF audience about the traditional wine making. It passes

through several stages to produce fresh fruit juice of green grapes picked from an organic vineyard in Buleleng. Results of the fermenta-tion will then be processed into white wine labeled as A Decade SVF 2015 Special Edition.

Further, Gus Rai said that grape stamp is very appropriate to be implemented in the SVF because basically the wine festival in the world is always presenting grape stamp. At least, visitors can inter-act and see firsthand the early stage of wine making process. He hoped that through the activities visitors can increasingly know about the variety of wine beverage and be-gin to culturally understand more about wine correctly.

Responding to the tight com-petition of imported wines, Gus Rai said that Hatten Wine gain-

ing several awards has been able to show the advantages of local grapes grown in the land of Bali and treated organically in the agrarian culture of Bali. When asked about the target in the fu-ture, Gus Rai replied that Hatten expected to become an icon wine of Indonesia.

In the meantime, Agus Susanto, a visitor from Jakarta who wit-nessed the grape stamp said that he just knew and understood about the process of making wine whereas he often drinks wine. Agus who first visited the SVF was amazed because various activities were displayed. And the grape stamp he considered a competition gave a lot of fun, information and education. This event should be appreciated as it is very inspiring, he added. (kmb18)

DENPASAr - If drinking wine is said to be very delicious, this expression is true and relevant to the manufacturing process. After being picked up, grapes are perfectly processed through fermentation so that it can be bottled to be further consumed. Formerly, imagining wine is di-rectly synonymous with Europe, but this fresh alcoholic drink with the touch of fermentation can now be produced at Sanur village.

President Joko Widodo scheduled to open the President Cup football champi-onship at Dipta Stadium, Gianyar, Sun-day (Aug. 30) is expected to resolve the problem on the reclamation by revoking the Presidential Decree No.51/2014 and to cancel the Benoa Bay reclamation plan on the area of 700 hectares.

“For three times Jokowi has received the document, the entire analysis, data, information and all the photographs of many billboard installations. If only the opposing parties or those that do not like the movement did not tear the billboards, Jokowi will certainly see today that most Balinese people reject the reclamation,” said ForBALI Coor-dinator, Wayan “Gendo” Suardana, in Denpasar, Saturday (Aug. 29).

Gendo said that the fight against the Benoa Bay reclamation poses a reaction against the reflection of destruction of Bali due to Serangan Island reclama-tion and the massive development in the coastal areas of the Island of Gods. Many people who were formerly ab-stain then chose to be in vanguard for Jokowi in the last presidential elec-tion. Their greatest hope is that Jokowi dared to revoke the Presidential Decree No.51/2014 made by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) and cancel the Benoa Bay reclamation.

“The hope emerged in the year of the presidential election. Until these days, the hope has not been realized. Well ... we do hope that Jokowi will no longer close his eyes. Up to the third year, much data should have been com-ing into him. With his intelligence, we believe that Jokowi can also sort the incoming information. Moreover, this reclamation is made by large employer and backed up by the authorities,” he explained.

Gendo added that cancellation of the Benoa Bay reclamation is also in harmony with the maritime program triggered by Joko Widodo himself be-cause maritime nation will not backfill the ocean. Moreover, this plan will obviously have a negative impact, even before it happens. Bali can be destroyed and fragmented, so that president must immediately end it.

“So, this will also distinguish Jokowi

from SBY because it was the regime of SBY providing red carpet to the investment who arrogantly issued the Presidential Regulation No. 51/2014. If Jokowi does not dare to revoke the regulation and to cancel the Benoa Bay reclamation, then what is the differ-ence?” he affirmed.

Similar opinion was expressed by Chairman of the LPM Tanjung Benoa, Kadek Duarsa, saying that President Joko Widodo must immediately revoke the Presidential Decree No. 51/2014 that paved the reclamation plan. Tan-jung Benoa is the most affected area of the plan. In terms of social, economic, cultural and environmental aspect, it will be detrimental to coastal com-munities.

“For example, if it is forced, Tanjung Benoa will have a trouble. We here will sink because the location of Tanjung Benoa is only 1.7 meters above sea level. Besides, we are also concerned with money intimidation because the people of Tanjung are gradually forced to sell their land to stay elsewhere. In the long run, the people of Tanjung

Benoa will vanish,” he said.Duarsa hoped that government will

let Benoa Bay remains as it is now and becomes a part of the culture at Tanjung Benoa as fishing community and coastal community. If it will be revitalized, it should be enough to dredge the inten-tional or unintentional silting.

“Regarding the silting, probably it happens due to intentional act because during the toll road workmanship the remaining limestone was intentionally left at Benoa Bay. Whether it is done deliberately or not, logically the silting must be dredged. After being dredged deeply enough, it must be planted with coral reef so that it will be very beneficial to coastal communities and Bali in general because there is a very important fishing area or place of work for us,” he explained.

Duarsa asked Joko Widodo to imme-diately take a firm decision. Moreover, Joko Widodo has been ruling for almost one year. He should have known the ir-regularity in the previous government system to issue the Presidential Decree No. 51/2014. (kmb12)

Both the inclusion of Besakih in the KSPN and the Benoa reclamation project, are considered to have the power to significantly change the lives of the Balinese people. For this reason, President Jokowi Widodo should listen to the aspirations of the people of Bali and order his staff not to position Bali as a region wide open to investments that are only aimed at pursuing finical gain. The President should immediately take steps to save Bali.

In response to such issues that are currently sparking debate in Bali, academics, humanists and religious leaders expect the President to be partisan to Bali’s needs. According to Prof. Sutjaya, at the very least - and one of the biggest challenges that should be considered by the central government is how to encourage Bali’s younger generation to maintain their cultural practices so that they can embody them with character. Sutjaya says that the rate of growth of tourism in Bali, is directly proportional to the damage inflicted and has led to a bleak period in the safe guarding of the foundations of Hindu civilization. Weak tourism management regulations, said Prof. Sutjaya, have allowed greed driven investments to have increas-ingly negative impacts on the environment of Bali, which in turn affects both the spatial arrangement and culture of Bali. Investments in tourism and derivative sectors has also caused increasing lev-els of impoverishment for Balinese people, very few of whom enjoy its benefits. Urban population expansion has also led to increasing competition in the job market which could lead to economic dis-parities between locals and the migrant urbanites, potentially kindling social conflicts. “There will be a cultural disaster if Balinsee people - as prac-titioners of Balinese culture, are not empowered in Bali” he said. Therefor the central government, led by President Joko Widodo must be selective about recommending investments in Bali. Likewise, the central government must look only to tourism as the economic force of economic growth in Bali. Given that many Balinese people are starting to be blame tourism for many of the growing negative impacts on the welfare of Balinese people, the central government needs to review its policies regarding the management of tourism in Bali.

“The exploitation of Bali’s nature and culture has already gone over the threshold of acceptable. Balinese people are increasingly marginalized and enjoy few of the benefits that result form the development of tourism here. The resistance of Balinese people will continue to weaken because of their economicfragility” he said.

Ida Pedanda Made Gunung also said that the most worrying thing concerning the preservation of Bali is the potential for tourist accommodations to the built near Besakih (through its inclusion in the KSPN), as well as the Benoa Bay reclamation project.

According to Pedanda Made Gunung, both would significantly change Balinese life. “Tourism has be able to thrive in Bali thanks to religious and cultural activities -not due to the granure of tourist accommodations.Other countries obvisouly have far better accomodations” he explained. (dir)

I bought a Tumi bag, and I got a Tiffany bracelet for my wife,” said the father-of-two during a visit to Singapore’s Merlion Park, which faces the massive Marina Bay Sands casino complex, a favourite destination for Chinese visitors.

travelled overseas in 2014, accord-ing to the Sydney-based Centre for Asia-Pacific Aviation (CAPA) -- more than double the 57 million in 2010 -- and experts expect that trend to continue.

“The short-term outlook for Chi-nese outbound visitors remains strong and the long-term is bright,” CAPA said in a report issued Thursday.

Beijing’s surprise devaluation of its currency on August 11, which is now trading at a four-year low against the dollar, has sparked fears China’s big-spending tourists will start stay-

ing at home.Shares in tourism-linked businesses

such as hotels across Asia have tanked, while Cathay Pacific’s chief executive has been forced to reassure investors the airline’s future was secure.

Businesses on the ground, how-ever, say more relaxed visa policies and the strength of the yuan against Asian currencies mean Chinese tour-ists will remain not only the most numerous, but also some of the biggest spenders.

The financial clout of China’s trav-ellers can be eye-popping.

According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, Chinese tourists spent $164.8 billion in 2014, a four-fold in-crease compared to 2008. A whopping 88 percent of that was on shopping, it said, citing the China Tourism Acad-emy, a government agency.

Japan alone saw more than 550,000 visitors from China in July, a figure more than double the same period a year ago, and the average Chinese tourist spends around $1,100 -- about twice as much as the next-highest spending cohort -- according to the Japan Tourism Marketing

depreciation would not hinder Chinese from travelling but some may become more cost-conscious, particularly when it comes to luxury items.

It is precisely that concern that is worrying organisations like the Indonesian Association of Travel Agencies.

Its chairman Asnawi Bahar said the industry’s fear was that Chinese visitors, who number roughly one million visitors to the archipelago an-nually, would “hold back on shopping and shorten their stay in Indonesia”.

Trade bodies in a litany of other Asian countries from the Philippines to South Korea have expressed similar concerns. (afp)

Thousands of kites were flown since Friday (Aug. 28) through Sunday (Aug. 30).

Approximately 1,700 locals participated in the kite com-petitions consisting of various categories, while 300 partici-pants from around the world participated in the exhibition. Coordinator of the Sanur Inter-national Kites Festival (SIKF), Kadek Dwi Armika, said that participants from overseas come from the United States, France, Sweden, Poland, Australia, Ja-pan, China, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Departure of aircraft can indeed be delayed, but this SIKF event cannot be postponed,” said Kadek, Friday (Aug. 28).

Kadek explained that suit-able wind atmosphere and good

weather are determining factors in order to fly kite and this is the reason why participants are present every kite event. Sanur has the potential to hold inter-national kite festival as revealed by participants from different countries.

The kite flown in the exhibi-tion as well as competition con-sists of various types and designs. The exhibition is mostly followed by national and international par-ticipants, namely kites without frame, revolutionary kites, stand kites as well as modern contem-porary kites. For the competition mostly participated by the locals belong to bebean, typical Sanur bebean, janggan, tailless janggan, pecukan, new creations and kids kites made from plastic.

The protesters camped overnight wearing yellow shirts of the Bersih movement — the coalition for clean and fair elections — even after authorities blocked the organizer’s website and banned yellow attire and the group’s logo in a bid to deter the rallies, which were also held in other Malaysian cities.

Former Prime Minister Ma-hathir Mohamad, who has been spearheading calls for Najib’s resignation, added momentum to the rally when he made a surprise brief appearance late Saturday with his wife to loud cheers from the crowd, and telling protesters to “carry on.”

Najib has been fighting for political survival after leaked docu-ments in July showed he received some $700 million in his private accounts from entities linked to indebted state fund 1MDB. He later said the money was a donation from the Middle East, fired his criti-cal deputy and four other Cabinet members as well as the attorney general investigating him. He slammed the protests for tarnishing Malaysia’s image.

“Those who wear this yellow attire ... they want to discredit our good name, scribble black coal on Malaysia’s face to the outside world,” Najib was quoted as say-ing by national news agency Ber-nama. Police estimated Saturday’s crowd at 25,000, while Bersih says 200,000 participated at its peak.

The rally was scheduled to last until midnight Sunday to usher in Malaysia’s 58th National Day.

“This is a watershed moment. Malaysians are united in their anger at the mismanagement of this country. We are saying loudly that there should be a change in the leadership,” said protester Azrul Khalib, who slept on the street with his friends. He said he was aware that the rally will not bring change overnight, but he wants to be “part of efforts to build a new Malaysia.”

Some used colored chalks to scrawl their demands on the street: “We want change,” and “We want clean and fair (elec-tions).” Scores of police bar-ricaded roads leading to the Independence Square, a national landmark that authorities de-clared off-limits to protesters ahead of the national day celebra-tions on Monday. Previous two Bersih rallies, in 2011 and 2012, were dispersed by police using tear gas and water cannons.

Analysts said the rally attracted a largely urban crowd with a smaller participation of ethnic Malays, which could be the reason why the Najib government allowed it to go on.

“They feel safe because it has not really affected the rural Malay segment, their bedrock support,” said political analyst Ibrahim Suf-fian. However, he said this doesn’t

mean that rural Malays are happy with the government, as many are upset with the plunging currency and economic slowdown.

A nation of 30 million, Malaysia is predominantly Malay Muslim with significant Chinese and Indian minorities. Its ambitions to rise from a middle income to a developed na-

tion this decade have been stymied by slow-paced reforms and Najib’s increasing authoritarianism.

Support for Najib’s National Front has eroded in the last two general elections. It won in 2013, but lost the popular vote for the first time to an opposition alliance. Concerns over the political scandal

partly contributed to the Malaysian currency plunging to a 17-year low beyond 4 ringgit to the dollar earlier this month.

Apart from Najib’s resignation, the demands being sought are insti-tutional reforms that will make the government more transparent and accountable. (ap)

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador — A powerful bomb was found in a car parked near El Salvador’s security ministry, but experts were able to deactivate it, the country’s defense minister said Saturday.

Gen. David Munguia Payes said the bomb contained plastic explo-sives and would have sprayed glass shards if it had exploded.

The Justice and Security Minis-try earlier issued a statement saying that agents found the bomb Friday in a car that had been reported sto-len. They were apparently acting on an anonymous tip.

It’s not clear who left the device,

but a crackdown on gangs, and battles among the gangs them-selves, have led to hundreds of deaths this year in the country of 6 million people.

The U.S. Embassy issued a warning that the discovery “is evi-dence of a further escalation in the level of violence” in El Salvador, though it said it is not aware of any threats aimed directly at U.S. citizens.

Meanwhile, President Salvador Sanchez Ceren on Saturday praised a local Supreme Court ruling de-claring the gangs known as maras terrorists.

“Now the persecution of crime will be more effective, the gangs now are terrorists and all the force of the law will be applied against them.” He said it would also make it easier to prosecute those who collaborate with the gangs.

The court said that “leaders, members, collaborators, apolo-gists and financiers” of the gangs would fall under the definition of terrorist.

Sanchez Ceren urged the coun-try’s legislature to pass a law that would provide legal opportunities for those who want to abandon the gangs. (ap)

Huge Malaysia rally for Najib’s resignation enters 2nd day

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Big crowds of protesters returned to the streets of Kuala Lumpur on Sunday to demand the resignation of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak over a financial scandal, after the first day of the massive rally passed peacefully.

After specifying the areas, the Buleleng Trade, Industry and Co-operative Agency has made a legal study and drafted regulation since April 2015. Legal Section Head of the Buleleng Regional Secretariat is still reviewing the law and will soon be signed into a regulation. In the draft of the Regent Regu-lation, other than including the

areas allowed to sell liquor, it also contains a number of detailed re-quirements.

The Head of the Buleleng Coop-erative, Trade and Industry Agency, Ni Made Arnika, said that only the traders in tourist areas are allowed it sell alcoholic beverages pursuant to provisions and instructions from cen-tral government. They are required

to have an Alcoholic Beverage Trade (SIUP-MB). In addition, the traders are also required to have a liquor selling permit of class A or SKP-A. The strict requirement makes sure that not all entrepreneurs can get the permit. Probably, only hotels and restaurants can get the permission. In the meantime, small traders can get the permit with a number of require-ments. “Hotels and restaurants are able to get permission by complying with the requirements, while small traders should form a joint venture group or tourism awareness group or cooperative. Later these groups will also have to cooperate with hotels

and restaurants as a direct seller,” he said.

According to Arnika, with the issuance of this rule, small traders are expected to be included in an organization. It is also meant to ac-commodate small traders recently objecting to the policy of central government on liquor sales ban in public places. Liquor sales by small traders are considered to be profit-able so that if there is no solution, the traders will go bankrupt. “Many small traders protested and we’ve done the assessment so that it will be applied as soon as possible in order to be met by traders,” she said.

In the meantime, the data in the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency mention that three tourism areas becoming foreign tourist des-tinations in North Bali are Pemuter-an (Gerokgak), Lovina (Buleleng) and Munduk (Banjar subdistrict). In addition, Buleleng also has special tourist attractions such as Pancasari and Wanagiri village (Sukasada) as well as Munduk, Gesing, Gobleg and Umajero village (Banjar sub-district). Besides, the region known as Den Bukit has 16 natural tourist attractions, 13 cultural attractions and four artificial tourist attractions. (kmb38)

MANGUPURA - The desire to accommodate people having pro-fession to sell handicraft products in Badung by establishing a Mengwi customary village art market cannot be realized so far. Moreover, the building located at the entrance into Taman Ayun, Mengwi, is unclear when to be in operation.

More sadly, the building pos-ing the assistance of Bali pro-vincial government is now filled with plastic waste scattered in

every corner of the building. This building draws the attention of passing people, including foreign and domestic travelers that are coming to and leaving the Ta-man Ayun.

The head of Mengwi subdistrict, IGN Gede Jaya Saputra, when confirmed justified the matter. Pre-viously, the market was planned to be operated by the authority of Mengwi customary village, but be-cause there are a number of repairs,

the operation of the three-year-old market is also postponed. “Indeed the building in the west side is still being repaired first and it is handled by the authority of customary vil-lage,” he said.

Later, he said that the operation of the art market will be entirely handed over to the Mengwi cus-tomary village. “However, I do not know for sure when the operation will be carried out,” he said.

Currently, explained Saputra, the

building having been operated is the one located in the east side, namely used for the exhibition of the art products. “Indeed, the building in the west side has not been operated yet,” he said.

Similar opinion was delivered by the chief of Mengwi customary village, Ida Bagus Anom. He said that the market cannot be operated yet because it remains to install paving block. “It is estimated to be operated next month,” he

said.As mentioned, all this time his

party has been unable to move quickly because the building was just handed over to the authority of customary village two days ago. “It is the assistance of the provincial government and then submitted to the government of Badung. Just two days ago the letter was delivered to customary village. So, we can just repair it right now,” he concluded. (kmb27)

SINGARAJA - Three tourist areas in Buleleng are granted license to sell alcoholic beverages. They consist of Batu Ampar (Gerokgak), Lovina (Buleleng) and Air Sanih (Kubutambahan subdistrict). In addition, 33 major tourist attractions are also allowed to provide liquor with the content of five percent or commonly known as beer.

Top global markets ended the week Friday largely recovered from China-induced panic selling, but market watchers remain worried the turmoil in the world’s number two economy will drag down global

growth.However, a report by the

official news agency Xinhua quoted Li as saying “the Chinese economy is operating within an appropriate range and China con-

tinues to lead the world in terms of growth”.

He added that “in the context of complex and changing situ-ations abroad and deep-rooted problems at home, we pressed ahead with progress while en-suring stability with sustained efforts for structural reforms and targeted macro-regulation measures”.

“These included, among others, cuts in the required reserve ratio, interest rates, taxes and fees and measures aimed at stabilizing the market, which are already paying off.”

Li made the comments on Friday when he chaired a special meeting of the State Council to discuss de-velopments in the global economic and financial field and their implica-

tions for China.Li conceded that “now that the

traditional drivers for growth are not as strong, it is important to come up with new measures to bolster reform and opening up. It is necessary to provide more public goods and services, and encourage mass entrepreneurship and innovation to boost the growth momentum”. (afp)

RIO DE JANEIRO — The bottom seems to have fallen out of Brazil’s economy, with the gov-ernment reporting Friday that the gross domestic product plunged 1.9 percent in the second quarter alone, once again throwing the nation into a technical recession.

It’s more bad news for President Dilma Rousseff, who is fighting for her political life. Two-thirds of Bra-zilians polled say they want to see her impeached because of a mas-sive corruption scandal and what is widely perceived as mishandling of the economy.

The drop was slightly larger than consensus forecasts of private economists published by the Central Bank, and prompted many to take an even gloomier view or prospects for the globe’s seventh-largest economy.

“We are nudging down our fore-cast and now think the economy will contract by 2.5 percent this year,” the London-based firm Capi-tal Economics wrote in a Friday re-search report, noting that previously

it forecast a 1 percent drop. “As expected, the driver was a complete collapse in domestic demand ... This is a shocking report.”

Like most Latin American na-tions, Brazil has been hurt by the plunge in commodity prices and the slowdown in China, which has been a big buyer of Brazil’s soy, iron ore and other commodities.

However, Brazil’s economy depends far less on trade than most nations in the region, with exports and imports making up just 27 percent of GDP according to the World Bank.

Brazil boomed for several years on the back of a middle class that expanded by some 40 million people since 2003. Suddenly flush with easy credit, they went on a sustained spending spree, upon which Brazil’s government built its economic model.

That spree started to sputter about three years ago and is now officially dead. Many Brazilians are in debt over their heads and are cut-ting spending severely. Household

spending reported Friday fell 2.1 percent as compared to the previous quarter. Rising inflation, unemploy-ment and tightening personal credit have added to souring consumer confidence.

Rousseff, speaking in north-eastern Brazil as she inaugurated a low-income housing project, tried to rally the crowd of mostly impov-erished Brazilians.

“I know that we’re passing through difficulties. Many of you are scared, you think that we’re in an uncertain situation, you feel that inflation is still too high and you fear losing your jobs,” she said.

Inflation for the 12 months end-ing in July stood at 9.56 percent, the government reported earlier this month. That’s far above the government’s ceiling target of 6.5 percent.

On GDP, the government’s IBGE bureau said the biggest second-quarter drop took place in the in-dustrial sector, where construction output fell 8.4 percent. (ap)

WASHINGTON - Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer warned Saturday that the US central bank will not wait for inflation to hit two percent before raising interest rates.

In a speech at a conference on monetary policy in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the Fed’s number two said: “We should not wait until inflation is back to two percent to begin tightening.”

He added, however, that the Fed needed to “consider the overall state of the US economy as well as the

influence of foreign economies on the US economy as we reach our judgment on whether and how to change monetary policy.”

Fischer said he was confident that US inflation was on track to meet the two percent target that the Fed considers a sign of a healthy economy, even though changes in the personal consump-tion expenditure index “have re-cently been only above zero” due to temporary factors like declining oil prices.

According to the PCE index,

consumer prices currently are only up 0.3 percent over the past year, notably because of low oil prices but also because of easing demand in China and elsewhere.

The Fed’s projections put core inflation, excluding oil and food prices, at between 1.6 and 1.9 percent next year, rising from 1.2 percent in July.

Among the factors keeping inflation low, Fischer cited the 17 percent increase in the value of the US dollar since last summer which has lowered prices of imports.

He added it was “plausible to think that the rise in the dollar over the past year would restrain growth of real GDP through 2016 and per-haps into 2017 as well.”

Evoking the impact of the foreign economic situation on US growth, Fischer explicitly mentioned China, departing from the Fed Open Mar-ket Committee’s usual language making oblique reference to “inter-national developments.”

“At this moment, we are follow-ing developments in the Chinese economy and their actual and po-

tential effects on other economies even more closely than usual,” Fischer said.

The Fed’s Open Market Com-mittee is scheduled to meet Septem-ber 16 and 17 and most economists believe that it will begin to raise interest rates, which have been at near zero since the 2008 financial crisis.

But turbulence in the financial markets in recent weeks in the wake of the slowing of the Chinese economy has raised doubts about the timing of such a move. (afp)

Mahendra Putra explained that the tangerine festival will be held in collaboration with the one vil-lage one product (OVOP). Like festival in general, in this tangerine festival will be displayed a variety of fruits and processed tangerine that have been developed by the community of Bangli. “All this time, Bangli, especially Kinta-mani and its surrounding areas, is known as tangerine-producing area. Virtually 95 percent of local

people produce quality tangerine,” he explained. Aside from produc-ing Siamese and slayer orange, all this time the community of Bangli also produces Brastagi orange and tangerine.

The man also serving as Bu-reau Chief of Public Relations in the government of Bali Province said that the convening of tan-gerine festival is not due to over production. However, it is mainly held to better empower and im-

prove the prosperity of farmers in Bangli. He hoped this festival will motivate entrepreneurs to be capable of processing tangerine into various processed foods. “So, with this festival the sweetness of tangerine will not only be enjoyed by farmers but also by everyone,” he explained.

In the meantime, to enliven the event, the tangerine festival will also be graced with a variety of competitions such as competition of eating tangerine, squeezing tangerine and arranging tangerine gebogan. People who are interested in participating in the competition can make registration at the Bangli Cooperatives and SMEs Agency on September 1-3. (kmb40)

MANGUPURA - Specia l mobile application for travelers, iWOW, standing for Indonesia World of Wonder, was launched on Friday (Aug. 28) in Kuta. The application is downloadable via iOS and Google Play. It poses an attempt to encourage the SMEs and tourism industry so that they can make promotion at affordable budget.

According to CEO of inTouch, Kendro Hendra, the special mo-bile application for travelers both foreign and domestic, is made specifically to adopt the needs of each individual. He explained that the application other than serving as directory, it also provides push message allowing travelers to re-ceive certain offers and promotions according to their profile.

Other than being favorable for travelers, he said, merchants mak-ing cooperation with the iWOW can get favorable media for promotion. “We develop a business model with a commitment “No Success, No pay.” In other words, merchants are given the opportunity to promote and sell their products in the iWOW at free of charge. The payment is just made when travelers use the displayed voucher at the merchant

itself,” he said.As developer of this applica-

tion, it makes cooperation with Markplus. Hendra assessed that the potential of this application devel-opment in Bali is quite high. It also causes that iWOW was launched in Bali.

Since it was soft launched early August, there have been 115 mer-chants to join. He expected from approximately 3.5 million foreign tourists visiting Bali, 10 percent can use this application.

In the meantime, Deputy Foreign Tourism Marketing Development Division, Ministry of Tourism, Prof. I Gde Pitana, highly appreci-ated this application because its presence can help the development of tourism industry. In addition, travelers visiting Indonesia can take advantage of special deals and promotions offered.

He considered that the smartphone application is a good platform for promotion. “What interesting in this application is the mass personaliza-tion because each individual can have different experiences,” he said. He appreciated the efforts of private sector in helping the SMEs and tour-ism industry because the government cannot do this alone. (kmb18)

JAKARTA - New restrictions on foreign journalists in In-donesia have been dumped just a day after being announced, with President Joko Widodo directly intervening to kill off the controversial changes.

Indonesia’s interior minister this week unveiled tighter rules for visiting press, including requirements that journal-ists obtain a second working permit and report their activities to all levels of government.

The measures were condemned by local and international press associations and free speech advocates, with the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club (JFCC) describing them as a “sad reminder of the authoritarian Suharto regime”, referring to the general who ruled Indonesia for 32 years.

But in a rare public rebuke Widodo instructed his minister to revoke the contentious regulations, an official said Friday.

“That was a direct order from the president,” interior ministry spokesman Dodi Riyatmadji told AFP.

Widodo promised in May to lift reporting restrictions for foreign journalists wanting to report from Indonesia’s easternmost province of Papua.

Indonesia has long been sensitive about foreign journal-ists covering Papua, where poorly armed fighters have been waging a low-level insurgency against Jakarta for decades on behalf of the mostly ethnic Melanesian population. Applying for permission to go there is complex and rarely granted.

In a statement issued Thursday the JFCC said the mea-sures announced this week contracted Widodo’s order on Papua and “calls into serious question” whether the interior ministry “understands or heeds orders from the Presidential Palace”.

The foreign ministry said Friday it would work with Widodo to reduce paperwork for foreign journalists and help ensure visas are issued “quicker and more efficiently”.

“Changes (to regulations) cannot be made by one or two ministers, it has to go through the parliament,” foreign ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir told reporters Friday. (afp)

JAKARTA - An Australian surfer has died after being smashed onto rocks by heavy waves off Indonesia’s Sumatra island, police said Thursday.

Ronald Stephen Schneider was surfing with friends Tuesday at the Mentawai islands, a world famous surf spot off Suma-tra’s west coast, when he fell from his board onto a shallow reef. He was 54, local media reported.

Mentawai police chief Reko Indro Sasongko said Sch-neider’s friends became worried when he did not return to their boat, and they went searching for him in a rubber dinghy.

“They found his board no longer attached to his leg, and not too far from there they found his body,” Sasongko told AFP.

He said Schneider had been smashed by heavy surf onto rocks and was bleeding from his head and torso.

His body was taken back to the city of Padang on the Su-matran mainland where preparations were being made for a return to Australia, he added.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it was providing consular assistance to the family of an Austra-lian man who had died in Indonesia.

Indonesia is a magnet for surfers, particularly from Australia, seeking world-class waves in unspoilt surroundings. (afp)

Papua military spokesman Teguh Pudji Rahardjo said the incident be-gan when a soldier was attacked by a mob in Timika.

A second soldier who came to his aid was also set upon, he said, prompting one of the troops to fire several shots to dispel the crowd.

“Two people died and three other civilians were injured,” Rahardjo told AFP.

The two deceased men were 18 and 23 years, local media reported.

In a statement, the Indonesian military condemned the actions of its troops.

“This was a criminal act com-mitted by Indonesian army soldiers, therefore it is now being handled by internal affairs,” military spokesman E. Sodik said.

It is difficult to independently verify information from Papua, as Jakarta keeps a tight grip on the resource-rich region with a heavy police and military presence and

there are restrictions on foreigners reporting from the area.

Violent clashes are not uncommon in the eastern region, where poorly armed fighters have been waging a low-level insurgency against Jakarta for decades on behalf the mostly ethnic Melanesian population.

Soldier kills two civilians in Papua: Indonesian military

TIMIKA - Two people died and three others were injured Friday when a solider opened fire on a group of civilians in Indonesia’s restive Papua province, a military official said Friday.

The demonstrators oppose legislation that would expand Japan’s military role under a reinterpretation of the country’s war-renouncing constitution.

In July, the more powerful lower house passed the bills that allows the Self Defense Force to engage in combat for the first time since World War II when allies come under attack even

when Japan itself is not. The up-per house is currently debating the bills and is expected to pass them by late September, making it law.

The participation of students and young mothers have captured media attention in Japan where rallies used to be dominated by labor union members and graying leftist activists.

“In order to make the world a better place, where the life of even a single child is taken away, we must take action now or Japan will make a turn for the worse. That’s why I came today,” said Mami Tanaka, 35, who joined the rally with her husband and their three children. Public polls showing the majority of people oppose the bills. (ap)

CAIRO — An Egyptian court sentenced three Al-Jazeera English journalists to three years in prison on Saturday for broadcasting “false news,” sparking an international outcry and underlining how authori-ties are trampling over free speech just over a year into general-turned-politician Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s presidency.

The men are now seeking a pardon from el-Sissi, who has per-sonally expressed regret over the long-running trial and the damage it has done to Egypt’s international reputation — saying it would have been better to simply deport the journalists. Al Jazeera said it will also appeal the verdict, once the court releases its full ruling in the next 30 days.

Canadian national Mohammed Fahmy, Australian journalist Pe-ter Greste and Egyptian producer Baher Mohammed’s case had em-broiled their work into the wider political conflict between Egypt and Qatar, where Al-Jazeera is based, following the 2013 military ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

The verdict comes just weeks after el-Sissi issued a new anti-terrorism law, which sets a sweep-ing definition for who could face a harsh set of punishments, includ-ing journalists who don’t toe the government line. The new law, like Saturday’s verdict, has drawn criticism from diplomats, press freedom advocates and human rights organizations.

Greste, who was deported from Egypt in February, said he believed an Egyptian appeals court would overturn the verdict, and called on el-Sissi to pardon him and his col-

leagues. Fahmy and Mohammed, both on hand for Saturday’s hear-ing, were immediately taken away by police after the hearing.

“In the absence of any evidence of wrongdoing, the only conclusion that we can come to is that this verdict was politically motivated,” Greste told reporters in Sydney on Sunday. “President Sissi now has an opportunity to undo that injustice. The eyes of the world are on Egypt.” Mostefa Souag, Al-Jazeera’s acting director-general, also criticized the verdict, saying it “defies logic and common sense.”

“The whole case has been heav-ily politicized and has not been con-ducted in a free and fair manner,” Souag said in a statement. “There is no evidence proving that our colleagues in any way fabricated news or aided and abetted terrorist organizations and at no point during the long drawn out retrial did any of the unfounded allegations stand up to scrutiny.”

Judge Hassan Farid, in his rul-ing, said he sentenced the men to prison because they had not regis-tered with the country’s journalist syndicate. He also said the men brought in equipment without secu-rity officials’ approval, had broad-cast “false news” on Al-Jazeera and used a hotel as a broadcasting point without permission.

Fahmy’s wife, Marwa, broke down in tears as the verdict was read out, with others sobbing in the courtroom. “I am asking for justice, for fairness,” she said while leaving the court. “I feel extremely disap-pointed because I love my country and I know that Mohammed loves his country. ... It’s really hard for us.” (ap)

BEIJING — Chinese state media say border patrol officials have seized 620 wild turtles and tortoises — 510 of them consid-ered endangered — that were found alive in a shipment of frozen seafood from Vietnam.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Sunday that border

police detected crawling sounds when they were inspecting the shipment at a border city in the southwestern region of Guangxi on Aug. 24.

Xinhua said police discovered the endangered species, including Indochinese box turtles and elon-gated tortoises, in a shipment head-

ing for the neighboring province of Guangdong, where the animals are considered delicacies.

The local state-run Nanning Evening News says border officials grew suspicious when the cargo was clearly more than what had been declared and that the driver was nervous when interrogated. (ap)

CLASSIFIELDS

“It’s the first time I’ve defended a title, it’s a really good to have that experience,” said Kvitova, who ad-mitted fatigue after the tournament from her battle with mononucleosis. “I feel terrible, but it doesn’t mat-ter. I will have day off tomorrow.” Kvitova and Safarova will start U.S. Open play on Tuesday.

After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Kvitova broke Safa-rova’s serve for the first time in the third game of the second set. From there, she took control on the way to her third singles title (Madrid Open, APIA International Sydney) this year and 17th overall.

The left-handers, who are friends off the court, wore the same outfits in the match — red skirts, white tank tops and red headbands.

“It felt like playing a Fed Cup actually, just against each other,” Safarova joked. “We know each other so well. It’s never nice to face a friend, but it’s a game.” They

were equally sharp on the court in the opening set, with neither being able to break the other’s serve or take more than a one-game lead. Kvitova had six aces in the set, while Safarova had four. Even at 6-6 in the tiebreaker, Safarova was able to string together two straight points to close Kvitova out.

“My serve was working, so I was kind of able to hold to her level,” said Safarova, who is 0-6 lifetime against her fellow Czech. “My level dropped a little bit and she was more stable.” The second set started in similar fashion before Kvitova was able to break Safarova’s serve in the third game and take a 2-1 lead. The defending champion picked up momentum from there and won four of the next five games to force a third set.

“I think in the second set I was try-ing, still holding my serve,” said Kvi-tova, who won 85 percent of her first serve points in the second set. “The

chance to break her came, which was really good. For the first time I break her serve and it’s gave me little bit of confidence, as well. “I think I was little bit better player in the second set.”

Kvitova dropped the first game in the final set, but took the next three. After changing racquets, Kvi-tova lost once more, but finished off Safarova by winning the last three. “She’s a big hitter, so she is putting a lot of pressure on you serving really big,” said Safarova, who failed to break Kvitova’s serve in the entire match. “It’s kind of hard to break into her serve, and it puts extra pressure on your serve. “She was just going for it today.”

In the doubles final, Germany’s Julia Goerges and the Czech Repub-lic’s Lucie Hradecka beat Taiwan’s Chia-Jung Chuang and China’s Chen Liang 6-3, 6-1. The final at-tendance for the tournament was 51,946, up more than 4,800 from last year. (ap)

INGLEWOOD, California — Sugar Shane Mosley stopped Ricar-do Mayorga late in the sixth round Saturday night, winning a rematch between the veteran fighters.

The 43-year-old Mosley (48-9-1, 40 KOs) floored Mayorga with a body shot at 2:59 of the sixth round after largely controlling an unevent-ful bout at the historic Forum.

The 41-year-old Mayorga (31-9-1) was in unimpressive shape and did little to threaten Mosley, the former three-division champion

who had won just one of his previ-ous six fights.

Nearly seven years ago, Mosley stopped Mayorga with one second left in the 12th round of their first meeting.

Mosley hadn’t fought since November 2013. He promoted the pay-per-view bout himself, but curiously scheduled it on the same night as Leo Santa Cruz’s thrilling featherweight victory over Abner Mares just 10 miles away at Staples Center. (ap)

BEIJING — Mare Dibaba gets asked all the time if she’s related to Ethiopian great Tirunesh Dibaba. She’s not. Runs a lot like her, though. Especially when a title is on the line. Mare Dibaba captured the first women’s marathon gold for Ethiopia at the world champi-onships Sunday, holding off Helah Kiprop of Kenya in a race that was settled by a 100-meter sprint.

The 25-year-old Dibaba patiently waited for the right time to make her move, constantly checking her watch before breaking away in the shadow of the Bird’s Nest. Dibaba finished in 2 hours, 27 minutes, 35 seconds, edging Kiprop by one second in the closest women’s marathon finish ever at the worlds. Eunice Kirwa of Bahrain earned the bronze.

“No pace is bad. When every-body goes, you go,” Dibaba said through a translator. “I had to wait for it. Finally, I kicked.”

It’s been hot and humid all week in Beijing, but turned cooler for the race. There was even cloud cover. The air quality wasn’t ideal, though, with the race starting at the

“moderate” level and staying in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” range until the finish. Two-time champion Edna Kiplagat was in contention until the end but faded to fifth place.

With the stadium in sight, Dib-aba decided to make her move. Just after entering the tunnel — about where Usain Bolt started the 100 meters — she separated from Kiprop, who couldn’t answer that speed. Asked if Dibaba was simply stronger at the end, Kiprop responded: “Yeah.”

Dibaba certainly has a fitting name for a champion and often gets asked if she’s related to Tirunesh, who’s captured five career gold medals at the worlds. Or even Gen-zebe Dibaba, the younger sister of Tirunesh and world-record holder in the 1,500.

They’re from different places, but Tirunesh Dibaba is her biggest influence. Turns out, she has that familiar Dibaba kick, too, even if they’re not related. “My energy was there,” Mare Dibaba said. “I was so confident, purely confident.” (ap)

SINGARAJA - When having an excursion at Kendran Village, you can see all the uniqueness owned by Bali Island. Exotic na-ture, sustainable culture as well as historical legacy indicate if the human civilization in the area has been so advanced. By all means, it is reasonable if the village is visited by many foreign tourists, especially those who love cultural tourism, spiritual, history and ecotourism.

Kendran Village is situated in

Tegallalang Subdistrict, Gianyar Regency. It is very close to Ubud, or about 60 minutes’ drive from Ngurah Rai Airport. Aside from having cool air, the local culture and tradition with historical value are also favored by tourists. “Tour-ists feel peaceful when staying at Kendran Village having the nu-ance of beautiful Balinese house and exuding unique atmosphere to tourists,” said Nyoman Buda, one of the planners of the Kendran

Tourism Village.Ecotourism program is the most

popular product offered to tourists. By exploring the rural roads, tour-ists can learn and enjoy the Balinese cultural attractions developed with the concept of community-based tourism. Terraced rice fields have been becoming the playground for a flock of white heron flying to and fro. Accompanied by farmers who work to cultivate their land and the sound of water flow will give an ambience that could release tension.

Indeed, it is very absorbing when walking on the dikes of the rice

field overlay spreading across 650 hectares. Moreover, after arriving at Telagawaja, our mind seems to have united with nature. The aura is different and it poses a perfect place for spiritual indulgence. Telagawaja nature offers freshness through its shower and bathing place. To get there, visitors have to go down some stairs. The water flows end-lessly, tastes cold and refreshes the body.

No less interestingly, here visi-tors can find sarcophagus and kettle drum maker which has a high spiritual value located in the valley with a natural panorama. Splashing

water emanating from the springs really increases the spiritual aura of the village. “Here is the favorite location for tourists to perform spiritual activities,” he said.

Balinese culture that has been known worldwide is still main-tained by the community. Even, visitors can get involved in the activities of sculpturing or carving. In addition, tourists can also learn to practice Balinese Dance, starting from the basic movement up to the whole dance movement. “In other words, this program offers an eco-tourism while learning the arts of Bali,” said this energetic man.

This stadium once seemed to be impenetrable for Chelsea’s Premier League opponents. Not this season. Although this was only Mourinho’s second home league loss in 100 games, it followed a 2-2 draw with Swansea on the opening day in west London. “It’s difficult to not only overcome the quality of the team but the manager here,” Palace manager Alan Pardew said. “This team today just had a belief they were going to win.”

Not since 1982 had the south London team won a game at its rival north west of the River Thames. “We deserved more, I don’t want to say we deserved to win because it’s not true,” Mourinho said. “Four points in four games is a very bad start.”

The second-half collapse rein-forced the need for defensive rein-forcements, with Chelsea’s pursuit of center back John Stones being repeatedly rebuffed by Everton. John Terry, a previously solid presence at the heart of Chelsea’s defense until this season, was forced to watch from the stands after being sent off at West Bromwich Albion last weekend.

Terry’s absence did not seem much of a loss in the first half when Chelsea controlled a tepid encounter without

scoring, but the home defense was leaky after the break.

The game came to life in the 65th minute when a speedy break down the left flank by the visitors led to Yannick Bolasie crossing to Bakary Sako, who resisted Cesar Azpilicueta’s challenge to put the ball beyond goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Mourinho’s response was to replace Willian with striker Radamel Falcao and the Colombia striker delivered in the 79th with his first goal since January during his ill-fated season with Manchester United.

The creator was fellow new re-cruit Pedro Rodriguez, who whipped in the cross that Falcao met with a diving header at the near post.

“He’s a boy who came from a difficult period,” Mourinho said. “It’s a goal that means nothing for the team.” That’s because inside two minutes, Chelsea was stunned again. Bolasie and Sako helped to create the goal this time for Palace. Sako, who was playing in the second tier last season, nudged the ball back for the unmarked Joel Ward to head into the net.

Not since November 2011 has Chelsea conceded two or more goals in consecutive games on home soil,

FRANKFURT, Germany — Thomas Mueller celebrated his 200th Bundesliga match with two goals as defending champion Bayern Munich powered past Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 on Saturday.

Mueller now has five goals in the first three matches of the season — and 76 in the league for his career. Arjen Robben converted a penalty for his first of the campaign as Bayern put on a convincing display against one of the highest rated Bundesliga teams, which has qualified for the Champions League. “We are getting along quite nicely,” Mueller said.

Earlier, Yoshinori Muto scored his first pair of Bundesliga goals and set up one to lead Mainz past Hannover 3-0. Cologne rallied to beat 10-man Hamburger SV 2-1, while promoted Ingolstadt and Darmstadt both picked up points in the Bundesliga.

Ingolstadt won 1-0 at Augsburg, which was last season’s surprise team and qualified for the Europa League. Darmstadt earned its third draw in as many games, holding Hoffenheim 0-0. Eintracht Frankfurt won 4-1 in Stuttgart. Last-place Stuttgart has lost all three games so far. Hannover is winless as well.

Leverkusen played polished, pass-ing football but lacked the finishing punch and would have suffered a bigger defeat if Bayern had used all its chances, especially late in the match.

Because of injuries and suspen-sions, Bayern began the match without a single trained central defender but it allowed little openings to Leverkusen, which could not handle the speed of wingers Douglas Costa and Robben. Costa sped past Roberto Hilbert and

fed Mueller, who beat Jonathan Tah to the ball and knocked it in from close range in the 26th. Costa struck the crossbar off a Robben cross, before Hakan Calhanoglu did the same on the other side.

Leverkusen began to tire in the second half and Hilbert pushed Arturo Vidal to give away a penalty, con-verted by Mueller in the 60th. Robben also scored from a penalty, again given away by the hapless Hilbert, who handled the ball in the 71st.

“I am a team player,” Mueller said laughingly, when asked why he did not take the second penalty as well. Robben had immediately signaled that he wanted to take the shot. Hamburg defender Emir Spahic was sent off late in the match for pushing down Anthony Modeste and the striker converted the resulting penalty for Cologne’s victory. Stuttgart also fin-ished with 10 men as Luc Castaignos scored twice.

Newly signed Muto, stepping in for Shinji Okazaki — who left for Leic-ester — scored the first two goals for Mainz inside the first 30 minutes and Yunus Malli completed the win early in the second half.

In Cologne, Hamburg scored the opening goal through Lewis Holtby in the 47th but newly signed Philipp Hosiner tied the match in the 76th.

Three minutes later, Spahic made slight contact with Modeste in the area and Cologne got the call. Modeste fired the ball in and Hamburg fell to its second defeat. Cologne has two wins and a draw. Hamburg goalkeeper Rene Adler had to leave the match in the first half with a shoulder injury and Andreas Hirzel made his debut. (ap)

BARCELONA, Spain — Ga-reth Bale and James Rodriguez scored two goals each to fuel Real Madrid’ 5-0 rout of Real Betis in its home opener Saturday, while Barcelona edged Malaga 1-0 in the Spanish League. Rodriguez picked out Bale to set the tone from the second minute and increased the lead with a vicious free kick from a tight angle in the 39th.

After Karim Benzema made it 3-0 early in the second half, Rodriguez produced another bril-liant strike with a bicycle kick to whip in his second goal in the 50th. Bale was not to be outdone and struck a blistering long ball while on the run that hit the upright before landing in the net with two minutes left.

While Madrid eased to the convincing win, Barcelona needed Thomas Vermaelen to score his first goal for the defending cham-pion to secure a second straight win at Camp Nou. Barcelona leads Madrid by two points after two rounds, but it was Celta Vigo that took the overnight lead on goal difference after crushing 10-man Rayo Vallecano 3-0.

Madrid’s victory was a relief for

new coach Rafa Benitez, whose league debut last weekend ended in a frustrating scoreless draw at promoted Sporting Gijon. Betis, which also returned to the topflight this season, was no match for Madrid at its Santiago Bernabeu Stadium and with Rodriguez back in the starting lineup after Benitez had left him out of his first-choice 11 in Gijon.

“For me, I could care less about the debate regarding which player plays,” said Benitez. “I just want 11 players playing well. I want to enjoy the 5-0.” Bale was the first beneficiary of Rodriguez’s return when he spotted the Wales winger unmarked and placed a lobbed pass for him to head in beyond former Madrid goalkeeper Antonio Adan.

The outclassed Betis barely weathered Madrid’s relentless push for a second goal until Ro-driguez drove a strike in off the far post from a free kick placed on the line on the right side of the area. Bale then crossed for Benzema, who was injured in round one, to head the ball home in two minutes after halftime.

including the length of the contract.Ibisevic, who has also played

for Hoffenheim, scored 82 goals in 202 Bundesliga matches. Stuttgart is without any points after three

matches. Ibisevic was dropped from the first-team squad last season. The Bosnia-Herzegovina forward will move to Berlin after the international break. (ap)

MADRID - Costa Rica goal-keeper Keylor Navas produced an-other excellent performance for Real Madrid in Saturday’s 5-0 La Liga win at home to Real Betis that may have left many fans of the world’s rich-est club wondering why they need David De Gea. According to reports in Spanish and British media, Real are poised to pay Manchester United 40 million euros ($44.71 million) to buy Spain keeper De Gea, who has not played this season because of the transfer saga, before the latest transfer window closes on Monday.

If the deal is confirmed, it will put Navas, who joined Real from

Levante for a fee of around 10 million euros after a sparkling performance at last year’s World Cup finals, in a difficult position. Known as the “Falcon of Costa Rica” for his agility, the 28-year-old was one of the star players in Brazil and his brilliant form helped the central American nation unexpectedly reach the last eight.

Against Betis, he demonstrated that agility when he leaped to snatch the ball from the feet of forward Ruben Castro when he seemed certain to score and later saved a penalty from the same player with another fine stop.

Real’s new coach Rafa Benitez has repeatedly declined to confirm or

deny whether De Gea will be joining the club, where he is seen as a long-term replacement for former captain Iker Casillas, who left to join Porto last month.

Asked on Saturday whether Navas, who competes for a place with new signing Kiko Casilla, would definitely be staying, he told reporters: “What answer have I given the last three weeks to questions about the goalkeepers?” “I am delighted with the three keepers and I want to enjoy the 5-0,” added the 55-year-old, who took over from the sacked Carlo Ancelotti at the end of last season. “I work with the players I have. I am very pleased.”(rtr)

MILAN - New strikers Carlos Bacca and Luiz Adriano bagged their maiden Serie A goals to give AC Milan their first points of the season with a 2-1 home win over Empoli on Saturday. Colombian Bacca, signed from Sevilla last month, outran two defenders to score in the 16th minute at the San Siro.

Former Milan player Riccardo Sa-ponara equalised for Empoli four min-utes later, sliding the ball under the legs of goalkeeper Diego Lopez. Brazilian Luiz Adriano, sold by Shakhtar Donetsk for eight million euros ($8.87 million), then headed the winner in the 69th min-ute as Milan moved into 10th place after

two matches.Striker Mario Balotelli, back on loan

at his old club from Liverpool, was greeted with a few whistles when the Milan names were read out and spent the game on the bench.

Sassuolo substitute Floro Flores brought a dull game to life at Bologna by scoring four minutes from time, his second goal in as many games.

The 1-0 win allowed Sassuolo to go top of the table, at least until Sunday when a busy programme of games includes champions Juventus travel-ling to AS Roma. Juve and Roma have finished first and second respectively in each of the last two seasons. (rtr)

again ignite the crowd with his ac-robatic shot, lifting up Toni Kroos’ pass before slamming in back into the net with his back to the goal. Goalie Keylor Navas had his quiet night interrupted when Raphael Varane fouled Jorge Molina in the box, but he responded by smoth-ering Ruben Castro’s spot kick in the 61st before Bale capped the lopsided win from long range.

While Messi was Barcelona’s most incisive player, Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo was oddly subdued. Neither rival has scored through two rounds. Malaga goalie Carlos Kameni had denied Mes-si on several occasions before Vermaelen broke through in the 73rd.

Vermaelen started in place of the suspended Gerard Pique, and his goal marks quite a turnaround for a player who only appeared in the final league match of last season because of nagging injuries that had previously limited him before his arrival from Arsenal.

“Everyone knows what I went through,” said Vermaelen. “The preseason was very important and the coach (Luis Enrique) gave me the opportunity to show what I am capable of. I am very grateful.”

Neymar, who played his first game of the season after recovering from the mumps, focused on set-ting up Messi and almost assisted him twice near the start of the sec-ond half. But Kameni was up the task when he stopped Messi with his seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th saves of the night as Barcelona pressed for a breakthrough. It final-ly came when Kameni parried Luis Suarez’s cross and Vermaelen used his left boot to sweep it home.

David Moyes’ Real Sociedad is still searching for its first vic-tory— and its first goal— after the Basque side drew 0-0 with Sport-ing. Celta was led to its big win by Manuel “Nolito” Agudo’s two goals. Rayo goalkeeper Antonio “Tono” Rodriguez was shown a direct red card for fouling Daniel Wass in the 10th minute. Nolito converted the penalty before hit-ting a second goal in the 50th. Andreu Fontas rounded off the win in the 88th. (ap)

Palace inflicts Mourinho’s 2nd loss in 100 home league games

LONDON — More than just a blip in form, Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea Premier League title defense is in trouble after only four games. There’s a long way to go but a 2-1 home loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday left the champions trailing irre-sistible leader Manchester City by eight points and added the gloom around Stamford Bridge.

before Mourinho returned for a second spell in charge in 2013.

For Pardew it was a third victory over Mourinho in less than two years, with the previous successes coming while in charge of Newcastle. “It

was a stadium expecting Chelsea to win, most times they win here — to overcome the power of the team takes a considerable effort,” Pardew said. “We kept creating chances and it’s very difficult to do here.”

Chelsea’s only previous home league loss under Mourinho came against Sunderland in April 2014, with the team winning 76 times out of 100 games, which includes the Portuguese manager’s 2004-07 reign. (ap)

(ap)

Chelsea’s head coach Jose Mourinho shouts as he watches during the English Premier League soccer match between Chelsea and Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge stadium in London, Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015.

Last year at least four teenagers were shot dead in Papua in a clash with security forces, although rights campaigners accused police of open-ing fire on protesters. (afp)

Ethnic-Chinese Indonesians throw “hell money”, prepared as offerings for their ancestors’ souls into the air during the “hungry ghost” festival in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia, Friday, Aug. 28, 2015. During the month-long festival, Chinese people make offerings of food, hell money and paper-made models of items such as televisions, servants and cars to be burnt to appease the wandering spirits as it is believed that the gates of hell are opened during the month and their dead ancestors return to visit their relatives.

(ap)

(afp)

The bottom seems to have fallen out of Brazil’s economy, with the government reporting Friday that the gross domestic product plunged 1.9 percent in the second quarter alone, once again throwing the nation into a technical recession.

(kmb18)

Japan alone saw more than 550,000 visitors from China in July, a figure more than double the same period a year ago, and the average Chinese tourist spends around $1,100 -- about twice as much as the next-highest spending cohort -- according to the Japan Tourism Marketing

think-tank.Fischer predicted that the yuan’s

depreciation would not hinder Chinese from travelling but some may become more cost-conscious, particularly when it comes to luxury items.

(afp)

(dir)

(ap)

Balinese people are facing severe

challenges to the pres-ervation of their natural environment and their culture. The large number of investments into building projects that have rapidly entered Bali, has led to large numbers of migrants to move into urban centres, placing Bali in a critical position in regards to the preservation of the landscape. Bali-nese people consider that the central government’s decision to include Besakih in the national tourism stra-tegic area (KSPN) and the allowance of the Benoa Bay reclamation plan to go forwards, as serious treads to the preservation of Bali and show a lack of impartiality on the part of the central government.
