As the hallway is verynarrow, the market visitors sometimesshould jostle to pass. Such situationwill be more difficult when shoppersshould share space with the passingmarket porters carrying various com-modities.

Few days before major Hindu holi-days such as Galungan and Kuningan, visitors will overwhelm the market sothe situation is even getting worse. Themarket will be extremely crowded. Inrainy season or when it rains, floorcondition of the market is muddy anddirty.

Control against traders peddlingtheir merchandise on sidewalk is heldby the public order officers (Satpol PP)on particular days, such as before theassessment of Adipura competition.Indeed, they have been often givendebriefing and controlled. Meanwhile, theydo not want to peddle in the new mar-ket located in the Karangsokong Ter-minal, Subagan, because it is still quiet.

“The market at Karangsokong Ter-minal is quiet because its developmentcame to a standstill. Meanwhile, the market inAmlapura City is crowded and shabby. It is often muddy when it rains becausethe zinc roof of the market stalls hasleaked. In addition, buildings of themarket are old enough and have rustedand leaked. No restoration plan is madefor the market, though the market lev-ies are continuously collected and in-creased. Due to overcrowding, theAmlapura Timur traditional market isprone to pickpockets. Every marketday is always crowded, especially be-fore holidays. The victims are usuallyolder women. The damage road which lead to the Hot Spring tourism site is badly damage.

made convenient,” said one of thetour guides who asked his nameunpublished, Wednesday (Jun 15).

One of the local residents saidthe damaged road to hot springstourist object had occurred sincemore than a year ago. However, there was no improvementwhereas the public bathing objectwas visited by many domestic andforeign tourists every day. “Wereally do not understand, why theroad is left damaged,” he said.Based on observation of Bali Poston site, it happened becauseeroded by water as its positionwas on steep slope. When itrained, the water from the upperarea dragged on the asphalt. Therefore, the asphalt turnedbrittle and had potholes. All pass-ing vehicles had to be very care-ful to avoid sinking.

Numerous damaged road sec-tions were justified by Deputy Re-gent of Tabanan, Komang GedeSanjaya. He asserted that damages

happened due to lack of main-tenance. Moreover, the road in-frastructure had also been quiteold. “Within eight months weserve as regional leader, infra-structure gets the most com-plaints,” he said.

Though many infrastructureswere damaged, the Deputy Re-gent added his party could notdo much because the regionalbudget of Tabanan was consid-ered still minimal. It was causedby expenditure of personnel andservice operations. Such smallamount of budget was dividedinto 40 working units (SKPD).“As consequence, our budget isreally restricted,” he said. Nev-ertheless, he along with the Re-gent promised to save the useof budget. At the same time, they would lobby the provinceand central government to getfinancial assistance forinfrastructural development inTabanan. (udi)

Denpasar (Bali Post) –As seen at Suradipa Street, Peguyangan, North Denpasar, an open

green zone was still filled with ongoing building constructions de-spite a warning letter sent by Spatial Planning and Housing Agency(DTRP). Head of Denpasar DTRP, Ir. I Made Kusuma Diputra, lastWednesday (15/6) stated his side will do a surveillance on this andgive another letter to those still seen violating. “We even prepared athird warning letter,” he explained.

It was stated the owner of the building was called to clarify inperson yet didn’t come. And so DTRP sent a second warning letter. If still violating, it will be followed up by Peac and Order Agencyalso Police Civil Service. Meanwhile Head of Denpasar City PermitAgency, A.A. Singaraja (Bali Post)—Though has been repeatedly

complained by residents, therubbishes littering around touristbeaches in Buleleng remain to getno serious handling. Even, therubbishes causing the beach to lookslums still reap complaints fromtourists.

Chairman of the Indonesian Ho-tels and Restaurants Association(PHRI) of Buleleng Chapter, DewaSuardipa, Wednesday (Jun 16), saidthat his party received many com-plaints from tourists about shabbybeaches in Buleleng. For example, the beach at Buleleng Harbor, which is now visited by many tour-ists, was not free from rubbish prob-lems. Disturbingly, no trash can wasprovided in Buleleng Harbor areaso many visitors discarded theirrubbishes to the beach. “Appar-ently, the officials of local govern-ment do not manage the rubbishproblem seriously, especially attourist objects,” he said.

Another beach that was not freefrom rubbish problem is Lovina.

Denapsar (Bali Pot) –The rising terror of food poisoning where it will be placed on

canteen foods around Province Police, Tourism Police, Police Re-sort and Sector Police offices caused all police to take actionafter a terrorist group was captured in Jakarta with evidences suchas yellow liquid bottle, cyanide acid, DVD disc on jihad, and9mm calibre bullet. All Province Police should be aware and bealert of this as stated by Head of Indonesia Police General TimurPradopo in a teleconference to all Province Police confirmed bySub Head of Bali Police Public Relation Public Education Sec-tor, GAPC Sri Harmiti last Wendesday (15/6). “Anyone whoseems suspicious on surrounding canteens or shops will be fol-lowed up,” she explained.

Bali Police have told all officers to be alerted also for canteenor shop owners around offices. This anticipation should be moreincreased remembering it is near to Abu Bakar Baasyir’s vedict. Not yet with the 36 bomb terror target in Indonesia. (kmb21)

Meanwhile, the public and roadusers complain about traditionalmarkets in subdistrict city or ru-ral areas on market days as themarkets always cause traffic con-gestion. Some of them arePesangkan Market, Duda Village,Selat Subdistrict, then inBebandem Subdistrict such as theAbang market, Mangsul Marketand two other markets that are al-ways crowded every three dayslocated in Kubu Subdistrictnamely the general market min-gling with animal markets andRubaya Market and Tukad DelingMarket. Traffic congestion alwaysoccurs at Pesangkan, Abang,Rubaya and Tukad Deling on mar-ket days and it lasts for hours. Asa result, it causes road users up-set, moreover, if they want to ar-rive at destination in a hurry.

A number of traders in tradi-tional markets such as inAmlapura were complainingwhen met last Wednesday. Otherthan finding difficulty to shop asthe market was crowded, the num-ber of visitors was decreasing, pri-marily those of middle-upper so-cial class because they began turn-ing to modern market or storesproviding a variety of moderngoods and opened for 24 hours.

In response to that condition, the Head of Karangasem House,I Gede Dana, said his party hadoften complained to the executive, including to the Regent ofKarangasem, I Wayan Geredeg, inthe parliamentary sessions. Addi-tionally, in the general views ofthe House, especially the PDI-Pfaction always emphasized to takeside to small communities. It in-cluded the attention given to pub-

Mangupura (Bali Post) –Even though the toll way plan from Nusa Dua – Benoa has

been approved by Central Government including Economy Co-ordinator Minister support also with the upcoming tender pro-cess, Badung Regent AA Gde Agung is still unsure of when theproject will be starting as stated after a general assembly atBadung House of Representatives last Wednesday (15/6).

It was stated there are some documents that hasn’t been fin-ished also Agung couldn’t confirm yet if the investment plan withState Owned Enterprises (BUMN) consortium. “It’s too early todiscuss investment, for sure it has to be discussed together withHouse of Representatives,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the support for Badung Government to investcomes again from the representatives. Commision C member, IWayan Puspa Negara, stated from regional finance wise, Badungcan invest yet it needs to wait for BUMN to join in a consortiumwith Badung Government under Letter of Intense (LOI). “Howmuch of it will be seen from the agreement. Yet for us, Badungcan share quarter of the toll way investment,” Negara explained.

Looking back to history, Badung never joined an investmenton paid public facility like in Jakarta and this investment notonly positive for regional finance but also creating a sense ofbelonging for the public in guarding their public utility. (kmb25)

Rubbish at tourist objects complained by visitors

The rubbishes littering around tourist beaches in Bulelengdoesn’t receive serious handling.During rainy season, a lot of trashitems are brought by river waterand pile up on the beach. They arein the form of stems and smallbranches that are even deliber-

ately dried by residents on thebeach so they looked unattractive.“The rubbish is dried on the beachfor firewood. It looks not good,”he said. (kmb15)

Rural market jams up roadslic facilities such as traditionalmarkets. It was the rendezvous, aswell as shopping and peddlingplace of mid-lower social class. To make it more convenient, itshould be found solution so thetraditional market would not be-come a congestion culprit.

Meanwhile, the Head of Com-mission III of Karangasem House,Made Wirta, said, nevertheless, traditional market remained po-tential to be developed. Except forempowering the business be-longed to middle-lower socialclass, it was also potential to in-crease the levies of the market.“Do not only collect the levies, while sanitation, comfort, secu-rity, and supporting facilities donot get attention,” affirmed GedeDana.

So far, traditional markets inKarangasem, added Wirta, werealso potential to be a tourist at-traction. He often saw travel agen-cies bringing tourists that stayedin villa to shop at traditional mar-kets such as at Amlapura Timurmarket. “If our traditional marketsare well arranged, clean and com-fortable, they will certainly be-come more interesting and uniquetourist attraction,” he said.

According to him, the mid-lower social class and small trad-ers should be helped and empow-ered, not only discourse the idea.On the other hand, regency gov-ernment let and did not arrangethe modern markets spreading outeverywhere. Similarly, it did notrestrict the operation hours sothey opened 24 hours. “I think itvery detrimental to mid-lower so-cial class or small traders wheremodern markets are allowed to

penetrate the countryside. If weare going to seriously empowerthe small communities and reducepoverty, we have to re-organizethe traditional markets with cen-tral orientation in the economy ofmid-lower social class,” saidGede Dana, Head of theKarangasem House, from poorvillage Datah.

On the other hand, the Head ofKarangasem Revenue Office(Dispenda), I Gede AdnyanaMulyadi, said that related to theexistence of Amlapura TimurMarket his party had planned arenovation. Even, there was a planto improve the market buildinginto a two-story. However, therenovation could not be ascer-tained yet because it had to waitthe availability of budget. “Thereare many priorities of develop-ment and all sectors request tocome first. It is required a patiencein the midst of difficulties due tolimited budget of regency govern-ment,” he appealed.

According to him, in terms ofmarket sanitation, the AmlapuraTimur Market was good. He provedthis year that small town Amlapurahaving a number of traditional mar-kets such as the market ofKarangsokong at Subagan as well asAmlapura Barat and Timur Marketwas capable of winning the Adipuratrophy as the cleanest small town forthree times in succession. Actually, traditional market was one of themost critical components in the as-sessment held by Adipura team. “Ifour traditional markets in Amlapuraare not clean, of course it was un-able to achieve the Adipura trophyfor three times successively,” saidAdnyana Mulyadi. LONDON – Britain’s Ministryof Defence (MoD) refused to con-firm press reports that Prince Harryhad been given the green light toreturn to action in Afghanistan.

WASHINGTON – A group of25 US senators, almost all Demo-crats, released a letter urging Presi-dent Barack Obama to carry out a“sizable and sustained reduction”of US forces in Afghanistan in July.

Obama promised 18 monthsago — when he announced atroop surge to push back theTaliban and buy time for Afghanpolitical and security develop-ment — that in July 2011 UStroops “will begin to come home.”

The senators, including a left-ist political independent and two“Tea Party” conservative Repub-licans, said they believe that the USmission in Afghanistan is com-plete, especially after US comman-dos killed Al-Qaeda chief Osamabin Laden in early May.

Widespread corruption in Af-ghanistan has also undermineddevelopment goals, and stayingthere no longer justifies riskingUS lives or spending US funds.

“We write to express ourstrong support for a shift in strat-egy and the beginning of a siz-able and sustained reduction ofUS military forces in Afghani-stan, beginning in July 2011,”wrote the senators.

Harry’s first tour of duty in Af-ghanistan, in which he directed jetsbombing Taliban fighters, was cutshort when foreign websites brokea media ban on the reporting of theprince’s involvement.

The third-in-line to the Britishthrone made it clear he wanted toreturn as soon as possible.

“Those original goals have beenlargely met,” the letter read. “Givenour successes, it is the right momentto initiate a sizable and sustainedreduction in forces, with the goalof steadily redeploying all regularcombat troops,” the letter read.

While building new civic insti-tutions in Afghanistan “is a laud-able objective,” this goal “does notjustify the loss of American livesor the investment of hundreds ofbillions of taxpayer dollars.” TheUnited States “will never be ableto secure and police every townand village in Afghanistan. The cost of prolonging the war“far outweigh the benefits. Temple CeremonyCalendar Event for May 25 through July 8, 2011

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date forit annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 daysaccording to Balinese calendar, including the smallerancestral shrine which each family possesses. Becauseof this practically every few days a ceremony of festi-val of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebratedthe same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan,Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day,Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place onthe same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. Whennew moon is used then the celebration always happens onnew moon or full moon. The day of course can differ thereligious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full daywith some temple celebrating for three days while the cel-ebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is neverless than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressedwith pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimespainted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifullyarranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. Thousands of people had jammedinto the heart of downtownVancouver in the hopes of celebrat-ing the Canucks’ first Stanley Cup butthe party scene descended into vio-lence after the Bruins emerged witha 4-0 victory.

The ugly scenes brought backmemories of a riot that erupted whenVancouver also lost the Stanley Cupin 1994 as groups of mostly youngmen threw bottles, attacking parkedcars and smashed store windows.

“There was a group of people fullyintending to make this into a 1994event,” Mayor Gregor Robertson toldreporters, saying a group of “angryyoung men” had decided to disruptan otherwise peaceful event.

SYDNEY – Asian and African night owls were treated to a lunar eclipse, and ash in the atmosphere from a Chilean volcano turned it blood red forsome viewers. The Sydney Observatory said the eclipse was to begin at3:25 a.m. Thursday (1:25 p.m. EDT, 5:25 p.m. GMT Wednesday) and lastuntil after 5 a.m.

Scientists said the specific phenomenon happening Thursday — knownas a “deep lunar eclipse” — often exudes a coppery color. But the intensityof the color depends on the amount of ash and dust in the atmosphere.

Luckily for moon-gazers, there was plenty of ash in the air so the moonappeared orange or red, especially in Asia. Air travelers haven’t been solucky: The ash has grounded hundreds of flights around the region. Scien-tists said the eclipse could be safely observed with the naked eye.

wounds and many more for exposureto tear gas or pepper spray. Policehave not released any information onhow many people had been arrested.

A Reuters reporter saw at least ahalf dozen cars burning or de-stroyed by fire, including two po-lice cars. Many more had beenoverturned or had their windowssmashed. Several stores had alsobeen looted or damaged.

While many fans were in a partymood, others, clearly fueled by al-cohol, were furious at their team’sdefeat to the Bruins. One manyelled: “I hate you, Boston!” whileothers shouted insults at the police.Others watched the chaos in dis-belief. “I don’t understand whypeople would trash their own city,”said another.

The crowd thinned by the earlyhours of Thursday morning but somecontinued to try to destroy propertyas police in riot gear attempted tocontain them in a small area ofdowntown.

The scenes were in sharp con-trast to those after the 2010 Win-ter Olympics, when a massivestreet party erupted in the samearea after Canada beat the UnitedStates to win the men’s ice hockeygold medal. Mayor Robertson didnot think the violence would de-stroy the favorable internationalimage the Pacific coast city hadbuilt in hosting the Games. “I thinkpeople will understand that this isa small group of troublemakerswho have trashed our party,”Robertson said.

In turn, the two gamelan playercommunities spread their charm bypresenting two creations ofgamelan music composition and atraditional dance and a creationdance. “This trial was a joke. Theyhaven’t looked for the truth, theyonly want to serve the interests ofthe current political power,” said aspokesman for Bashir’s radicalorganisation, Jemaah AnsharutTauhid (JAT).

Prosecutors had demanded a 20-year life sentence for Bashir, whowas found guilty of channellingabout $50,000 to a terrorist cell thatwas conducting military-style train-ing in Aceh province in 2009.

Police say the so-called Al-Qaeda in Aceh group, which wasdiscovered in February last year, wasplanning assassinations andMumbai-style attacks by highlytrained suicide gunmen.

Bashir had been facing the deathpenalty for providing illegal weap-ons to the group but authoritiesdropped those charges early in theproceedings. The court also acquit-ted him of a charge of possessingillegal weapons.

He rejects all allegations of ma-terially supporting terrorists, whilepublicly exhorting his followers towage jihad or “holy war” against theWest and Indonesia’s form of secu-lar, democratic government.

the Aceh cell, which was operation-ally led by Dulmatin, one of South-east Asia’s most wanted men untilhe was killed in a police raid inMarch last year.

Bashir told reporters before thesentencing session began that he wasbeing framed by Australia and theUnited States, a claim he has re-peated throughout his trial.

“They want me to disappear fromIndonesia... The benefit to them? Tokill Islam, to kill defenders of Islam, arrested and killed without reason,”he said.

Police have tightened security atshopping centres across the sprawl-ing city and deployed extra person-nel following threats of bomb attacksin the event of Bashir’s conviction.

Indonesia has been rocked by aseries of attacks by JemaahIslamiyah and its offshoots, includ-ing bombings of tourist spots on Bali, the Australian embassy and luxuryJakarta hotels.

Bashir served almost 26 monthsbehind bars over the 2002 Balibombings but his conviction wasoverturned after his release in 2006.

Prosecutors have also unsuccess-fully charged him with involvementin church bombings in 2000 and anattack on the Marriott hotel in Jakartain 2003.

Analysts said Bashir’s jailingwould not reduce the militant threatin Indonesia, the world’s most popu-lous Muslim-majority country anda key US ally in Southeast Asia.

He also said that increase in EU‘sinvestment in Indonesia is mutuallybeneficial.

He also said that the EU is alsohoping for the benefit of increasedtrade under the CEPA.

And he said that the increasedtrade would not harm Indonesia‘strade because the commodities ofthe two sides are more complemen-tary in nature.

“We are manufacturing high-techmachinery for factories here, whileIndonesia is producing things liketextile, footwear and raw materialfor export to Europe under a mutu-ally beneficial cooperation,” he said.

Talks about increased Indonesia-

The two sides agreed to increasetrade and investment, and assigneda joint vision group to study the po-tentials of the cooperation.

For six months the vision groupdiscussed issues on the plannedpartnership and made some recom-mendations, including bilateralagreement between the two sidescovering a rate of nil percent of 95pct of the rates of at least 95 pct ofthe trade value in not more than nineyears.

In the meantime, joint chairmanof the Indonesia-EU vision group

The vision group also recom-mended CEPA to include concretemeasures to promote “green” ele-ments on a sustainable basis in tradeand investment in Indonesia and theUE.

Teep Beans:Lazing while Enjoying Slow Snack

Among the delicacy of Balinese food with hotspices, in fact, Balinese community also retains easy-peasy snack but sometimes a bit harder. One of themis the bean of teep. Its tree resembles to that ofbreadfruit. However, its beans are far smallercompared to that of breadfruit. When its fruits haveturned ripe, they usually attract the presence of civet.Actually, this nocturnal cat is only interested to eat theflesh of fruit. Similar thing also happens to coffeebeans. Since the skin of beans is hard it cannot digestthem so civet could only enjoy the flesh. On the nextday, those seeds could be found at the feces of civet. All seeds remain intact. However, if people see the ripefruits first, they will not need to wait the coming of civetto pick them.

To process the beans, they are first cleansedthoroughly and dry under the sun. Afterward, theyshould be fried without oil but sand. When they havebeen finely cooked they can be enjoyed while relaxingor lazing. As the shell and beans are slightly hard, itmay take a bit long time to open and chew them. However, if they are indeed dry enough and cookedwell they must be easy to open and crispy. They aregood to consume as slow snack while chatting orwatching TV. (BTN/punia)

LONDON – The rich-world’seconomic prospects have darkenedslightly, a Reuters poll of econo-mists showed, with new signs of aslowdown in the United States com-pounding fears about the poor fis-cal health of Western economies.

Since last month’s regular surveyof around 250 analysts in May, re-cent events have only underlinedthe increasingly disjointed nature ofthe global economic recovery.

While China and India took newsteps to calm fervent and inflation-ary economic expansions, Westernpowers have been preoccupied withattempts to defuse fiscal time-bombs in Greece and possibly theUnited States against a backdrop oftepid growth.

Economists in Wednesday’s polltook an axe to the outlook for U.S.economic growth following a raftof dire jobs and industrial data thismonth, while keeping their long-held view for weak euro zone andUK growth until the end of nextyear.

Only the Japan saw an upgradedoutlook in the latest poll thanks toreconstruction efforts that havegained pace since the March 11earthquake and tsunami.

“Two key downside risks haveincreased over the past few months— the risk of a disruptive default inGreece and of a significant slow-down in the U.S.,” said Kurt Karl, chief U.S. economist at Swiss Rein New York, in a research note.

He expressed hope the U.S.slowdown may be nearing an end, since oil prices are no longer risingand the supply bottlenecks causedby the Japanese disasters should beresolved later in the year.

NEW YORK – US banking giant Citigroup had told its clients that about 360,000 creditcards were affected by a computer hacking attack last month — nearly twice the number previ-ously acknowledged.

of this type of event. We have alsonotified law enforcement and gov-ernment officials,” the bankinggroup said in a statement to “ourcustomers.”

“We continue to monitor cus-tomer service and communicationchannels and take every necessaryaction to ensure our customers arecared for.”

It declined to provide furtherdetails of the breach, citing the on-going investigation and its custom-ers’ security.

The company has come underscrutiny from US lawmakers for itshandling of the attack. Citi did notinform its clients of the May 10 at-tack until nearly a month later.

Citi said it has replaced the cards

of 217,657 customer accounts, while others were not re-issuedcards because their accounts wereclosed or they were already receiv-ing new cards for other reasons.

Citi is one of the world’s largestproviders of credit cards, with morethan 21 million accounts and isowed more than $77 billion in NorthAmerica, according to its 2010 an-nual report.

The announcement came as thepublic website of the US Central In-telligence Agency (CIA) onWednesday joined a growing list ofhacker targets that has included

Sony, The International MonetaryFund, and Citibank.

The CIA told AFP it was lookinginto reports that cia.gov was knockedoffline temporarily by a hackergroup calling itself Lulz Security.

Lulz has claimed in recent weeksto have cracked into Sony,Nintendo, the US Senate, the Pub-lic Broadcasting System news or-ganization, and an Infragard com-pany that works with the FBI.

The group is flaunting its noto-riety with a telephone hotline forpeople to call and suggest targetsfor cyberattacks.

Rich world economy prospects darken: Reuters poll

ready reacted to the slowdown tak-ing place. World stock indexes haveshed much of the gains made sincethe start of the year, while U.S. Trea-sury bond yields have fallen.

The consensus forecast for U.S.second-quarter gross domesticproduct was slashed to an annual-ized 2.5 percent from 3.3 percentin last month’s poll, following aweak 1.8 percent rate of growth re-corded in the first quarter.

Such a rate of expansion wouldstill place the U.S. top among itseuro zone, UK and Japanese peers, but well behind major emergingmarket powers that themselves areshowing signs of slowing growth.

India and China saw accelerat-ing inflation in May, according todata on Tuesday, prompting theBeijing to lift bank reserve require-ments and putting pressure on In-dia to hike interest rates further.

Rates of growth and inflationhave been far greater in these de-veloping powers, but the dilemmaof keeping inflation in check with-out sacrificing growth has preoccu-pied policymakers everywhere.

The latest batch of Reuters sur-veys showed inflation pressures arestill on the rise in the West too —with CPI forecasts in the U.S. andespecially Britain being bumpedup.

Indeed, over the course of thisyear, inflation estimates in the U.S.,UK and euro zone for Q2, Q3 andQ4 2011 have doubled — and insome cases more than doubled —owing to the surge in crude andcommodity prices.

Perhaps reflecting expectationsfor higher inflation in the U.S., thepoll showed only a median 15 per-cent chance the Federal Reservewill embark of a third round of

money supply-boosting quantitativeeasing.

Unlike in major emerging pow-ers, which have managed a sus-tained and forthright policy of tight-ening interest rates to counter highinflation, Western central bankshave shown no such coordination.

A Reuters poll on Wednesdayshowed the People’s Bank of Chinawill yet take more measures to curbprice pressures, currently at three-year highs.

In the West, only the EuropeanCentral Bank has so far acted againstabove target inflation among the fourbiggest central banks — also includ-ing the Fed, Bank of England andBank of Japan — after raising inter-est rates from a record low 1.0 per-cent in April.

But pressure is mounting on theFed and BoE to follow suit.

“A significant pick-up in infla-

tion, with sluggish growth, will leaveFed policy in a bind,” said StephenLewis, economist at Monument Se-curities in London.

“By Q2 2012, the Fed’s credibil-ity is likely to be under so muchstrain that it will start the process ofnormalizing interest rates.”

Indeed, a survey published ear-lier this month suggested high infla-tion has already dealt a heavy blowto the BoE’s credibility since thestart of the year. Inflation there hit4.5 percent in May, far beyond theBoE’s 2 percent target.

UK economic growth, in com-mon with the neighboring euro zone, will struggle to exceed 0.5 percentin any quarter from now until the endof next year.

While France and Germany haveled the recovery among the euroarea’s 17 nations, debt-ladenstrugglers like Greece, Spain andPortugal have dragged badly ongrowth.

Even so, the bloc looks like it willavoid a direct hit from the festeringsovereign debt crisis that has envel-oped Greece.

Even before the March 11 earth-quake and tsunami off Japan’s eastcoast, the world’s third largesteconomy was struggling to generatemeaningful growth. But economistsupgraded the outlook for Japan’s re-covery for the third successivemonth.

“The recovery will gather pace inJuly-September and the economy isexpected to achieve a V-shaped re-covery,” said Shinichiro Kobayashi,a senior economist at Mitsubishi UFJResearch and Consulting.

While poll respondents expectthe Japanese economy to contract0.7 percent in the second quarter, they see it rebounding 1.0 percentin the third.

CLEVELAND – Lady Gaga made history at last year’s MTV VideoMusic Awards when she turned butcher’s cuts into high fashion.

Hall of Fame spokeswoman Margaret Thresher says the dress tookon a “dark, beef-jerky”look while dehydrating,so it was painted to look“fresh” afterwards. Theentire process took sev-eral months to complete.

What follow-up series could measure up?

“After ̀ ER,’ I wanted to be a stay-at-home dad for a while,” Wyle says.(Divorced last year, he has a son,Owen, now 8, and a 5-year-olddaughter, Auden.) “The game plan, such as it was, was to stay away fromepisodic television, and try to rebuildmy career in a post-’ER’ world.”

But the persistence of TNT (forwhich Wyle made three films in the“Librarian” adventure franchise)wore him down with offers for pi-lot deals, he says. NEW YORK - Older peoplewho include olive oil in their dietmay have a lower risk of stroke,a French study said, raising thepossibility that the well-knownconnection between olive oil andheart disease may extend tostrokes as well.

The study, which followedolder French adults for five years, found that people who regularlyused olive oil were 41 percentless likely to have a stroke thanthose who never used it.

“These results suggest a pro-tective role for high olive oil con-sumption on the risk of stroke inolder subjects,” wrote studyleader Cecilia Samieri of theFrench national research instituteINSERM, in Neurology.

The study included 7,625adults age 65 and older who re-ported on their diets and otherlifestyle factors. People who saidthey used olive oil for both cook-ing and as a dressing were con-sidered “intensive users.”

After analysis, with adjust-ment for other diet habits, exer-cise levels and major risk factorsfor stroke, heavy oliveoil use was tied to 41percent reduction in theodds of stroke.

Samieri’s team alsotook blood samplesfrom another 1,245older adults, measuringtheir levels of oleic acid— an acid found in ol-ive oil, as well as oilmade from a number ofnuts.

The one-third of par-ticipants with the high-est oleic acid levels were73 percent less likely tosuffer a stroke than theone-third with the low-est levels. Further re-search is needed, saidNikolaos Scarmeas,

with Columbia University in NewYork, who wrote an editorial pub-lished with the study.

“We need to remember that thisis an observational study,” he toldReuters Health, warning that whilethe research showed a correlationbetween olive oil and stroke risk, that doesn’t necessarily translateinto cause-and-effect.

“People who eat a lot of oliveoil may be very different frompeople who don’t,” he said, add-ing that they may have higher in-comes, eat better overall or exer-cise more often. Samieri’s teamtried to adjust for those differ-ences. But still, olive oil was stilllinked to a lower stroke risk.

Scarmeas said that it’s impos-sible to fully account for all thosevariables outside of a randomizedtrial, and called for more study intoolive oil’s potential health benefits.

Previous studies have foundthat a so-called “Mediterraneandiet” — one that includes lots offruits and vegetables, nuts, veg-etable oils such as olive oil, wholegrains, legumes, and fish — canshield people from heart diseaseand help heart patients stayhealthy.
