Meanwhile, the li-censed transport only amounts to4,000 car rentals, 1,200 tourist trans-ports and 40 units of inter-provincialshuttle services.

Head of Bali Transportation Ser-vices, I Made Santha, said that amongthe 100 tourist transports and car rent-als captured in the raid, 30 units hadan operating permit, while the rest hadnot had licensed with the Bali andoutside Bali police plate.

“Registration fee or tax of four-wheeled vehicle is IDR 1 million-IDR1.5 million per unit. By taking intoaccount the number of illegal trans-portation vehicles, we estimate to havelost tens of billions of revenue everyyear,” explained I Made Santha inDenpasar.

According to him, the transportwith outside Bali police plate was onlyallowed to operate in Bali with a tem-porary permit issued by police thatcould be renewed every three months.Meanwhile, administrative cost of thepermit was only IDR 50,000. In termsof rules, the supervision and disciplineeffort to control those illegal transportsremained weak. However, the regionwas allowed to issue an additional ruleregarding to the licensing.

Regarding tothis matter, only the officers of trans-portation services who understand,” hesaid.

In the meantime, Chairman of theBali Tourist Transport Association(Pawiba), Bagus Soediana, justified thelarge number of illegal tourist trans-ports operating in Bali and kindledunfair competition. Ashappened on Pagerwesi Day onWednesday (Apr 27), hundreds offamilies thronged the graveyard ateach customary village from dawnuntil early morning. At the grave-yard, they delivered food oblationon the grave of their family. Afterthe small ritual accomplished, thefamily ate together around theirfamily graves.

Ambience of the graveyard alsoturned crowded. All family mem-bers who had bodies of the familymembers remained to be buried andnot cremated yet will come togetherto the graveyard. As consequence, the graveyard looks like a rendez-vous for the whole big family, rela-tives and neighbors to mutuallygreet and offer food they bring.

“It is a unique tradition passedfrom generation to generation andshould be maintained continu-ously,” said Ardana, one the resi-dents who joined his family in de-livering food oblation, and ate to-gether at the graveyard of BulelengCustomary Village on Jalan GajahMada, Singaraja.

After confirming the identity ofthe car owners, Zulfikar immedi-ately sent a letter to the owner’s taxbilling. If not addressed, his partywould send an appeal letter in orderthey paid attention to the letter de-livered. “If our letter is ignored, wewill continue with the examinationprocess,” he said.

On that occasion, he affirmed thathe never questioned or banned any-one to have luxury vehicle of anytype and brand. But when concern-ing with tax matters, his party wouldfight in order the obligation to paytaxes could be implemented.

Tax liability and the Ferrari own-ership, explained Zulfikar, could beidentified through the annual notifi-cation letter (SPT). If found a dif-ference between the income and thevalue of vehicle owned, it could beascertained the notification of in-come was not written honestly. “Ifthe value of tax and vehicle was notbalanced, it means the taxpayer tellsa lie in filling out the tax notifica-tion, so it needs to be traced again,”he said.

Related to searches on the exist-ence of Ferrari, Directorate Generalof Taxation had a supervision andfollow-up program. The Hindus eat on the graveyard, a tradition during Pagerwesi day

Pagerwesi Day

Tradition of eating togetherat graveyard still survives

Meanwhile, another resident,Luh Sudani, from Petak Hamlet,Buleleng Subdistrict, said the wor-ship at graveyard had become a tra-dition every Pagerwesi andGalungan Day. She had preparedfood oblation since three days be-fore the Pagerwesi. Food oblationdelivered to family members whohad died contained food along withside dishes such as rice bag, relishof grated coconut and spices, belayag, rambanan vegetables andbeverages. “What we serve at home,we also present to our family mem-ber who have died but have not beencremated yet. It aims to share hap-piness in celebrating the PagerwesiDay,” she said.

According to Sudani, the tradi-tion of saying prayers at graveyardon Pagerwesi posed the last proces-sion of worship after carried out infamily temple or public temples. Allcontents of the food oblation wereenjoyed together with family mem-bers and relatives. It was believedthe food oblation should not bebrought home again because it hadbeen delivered to human souls whohad not been cremated. “The soulwhose body has not been crematedis considered impure spiritually. Ifthe oblation that has been deliveredis brought home we are considered

reluctant to eat ritual oddments, sothat we eat together here after theworship,” she explained.

Other than the graveyard atBuleleng Customary Village, devo-tees also looked to gather hilariouslyat the graveyard of Banyuasri,Buleleng Subdistrict. Its atmospherewas not much different where localdevotees also dedicated food obla-tion for their families and relativeswho had died but not yet cremated.Hopefully, they could be endowedwith happiness and safety whilefamilies left behind were given goodguidance in living their daily life.

Chairperson of the CustomaryVillage Assembly of Buleleng Re-gency, Made Rimbawa, said thetradition of saying prayers and eat-ing together at graveyard had be-come a tradition lasting for a longtime. By dedicating food oblationresidents expected that their fam-ily members who had died wouldnot become buta cuil (wanderingspirit) and interfere with the sur-viving family. Besides, the foodoblation was also intended as anapology as the surviving familywas unable to perform the Ngabencremation ceremony. “The oppor-tunity is then taken advantage bydevotees to eat and relax at grave-yard,” he said. Alejandro Poire, the federal gov-ernment spokesman for security is-sues, said many victims in Tamaulipasare believed to have been killed afterrefusing to work as drug traffickers.A total of 74 suspects have been ar-rested in that case, including 17 mu-nicipal police officers from the townof San Fernando, where the 183 bod-ies were found.

Authorities first found the

State authorities across Mexicohave sent reports of missing personsto Tamaulipas and families have linedup at morgues to give DNA samples. The process has been slow, with onlytwo bodies identified so far.

Authorities in Durango state saythe discovery of mass graves therehas not brought out many relativesof missing people, perhaps becausefamilies are too frightened to comeforward.

“The figures suggest that un-derlying activity in the economyremains pretty much stagnant,”said Capital Economics econo-mist Vicky Redwood in responseto the data.

Analysts argued that the mod-est recovery was not yet strongenough to persuade the Bank ofEngland to lift interest rates tocombat high inflation, amid con-cern over the impact of deepstate spending cuts and high fuelprices. “The 0.5-percent gainwas in line with consensus, but

I feel like I’m — wellI am — dealing with life and death, so Isuppose it’s a different kind of passion.”

But she hasn’t given up her day job. She’s got a new album, “Hard Bargain,”out this week. And in some ways her twopassions are symbiotic. One of the 11 newsongs she penned for the album is called“Big Black Dog.” The song’s about Bella,a dog with “a little too much gray aroundthe muzzle” that she adopted.

Harris penned the tune, and the other

songs on her album, in her writingroom in her home in Nashville. BobDylan is in the disc player and picturesfrom various periods in her life andcareer are on the wall.

“For some reason I felt very com-fortable in here, like a little nest orsomething up in the trees, you know?”she said. “I just said, `Well, I need totry to write,’ so I just literally lockedmyself away like the character in`Rumpelstiltskin:’ ̀ Don’t come out ofthere till you spin all that straw intogold!’ So I got a big bunch of straw.”

Harris emerged from the room hav-ing taken something of an emotionaljourney. She visits two of her greatestinfluences, Gram Parsons and KateMcGarrigle, ponders difficult ques-tions like stolen youth, death, the quick

“Emmy would play guitar and singand we would, depending on the song, choose an instrument that was work-ing, and we’d just kind of jam aroundand get the live piece done, then putsome colors on top of that,” Joyce said.“There were no session players com-ing and going. It was just a hang.”

LOS ANGELES – The first starsthat dotted the universe were notonly immense, but probably alsofast-spinning, according to a newstudy that sheds light on the natureof stellar evolution.

These early stars died out longago, but astronomers can get aglimpse of what they were like bylooking at later generations ofstars.

A team of scientists led byCristina Chiappini of the Astro-physical Institute Potsdam in Ger-many reanalyzed data from theVery Large Telescope of a 12-bil-lion-year-old star cluster. Theyfound high levels of metal in thestars — a chemical signature thatsuggests earlier generations, per-haps even the first stars, were mas-sive and rotated much faster thantheir present-day counterparts.

This is important because a starthat spins more rapidly can livelonger and suffer different fatesthan slow-spinning ones. Findingsappear in Thursday’s issue of thejournal Nature

VIENNA – The world stands to lose 230 million hectares of forestby 2050 with drastic consequences for the climate, biodiversity andthe global economy, the WWF wildlife campaign group said onWednesday. “Those responsible — policy-makers and industry — aresawing away at the branch we’re all sitting on,” WWF’s head of for-ests, Philipp Goeltenboth, said in a statement, noting that the areaprojected to be lost is 27 times the size of Austria.

WWF was in favour of no forest clear-ing anywhere, under any circum-stances.

ZNDD recognised, for example, peoples’ right to clear some forestsfor agriculture, or the value in occa-sionally “trading off” degraded for-ests “to free up other land to restoreimportant biological corridors, pro-vided that biodiversity values and netquantity and quality of forests aremaintained.” “Achieving ZNDD willstem the depletion of forest--basedbiodiversity and ecosystem services, and associated greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions,” it said.

Study: First stars weremassive, fast-spinning

13.7 billion years ago. During thenext 200 million years, the uni-verse cooled, leaving it dark andstarless.

The first stars that formed dur-ing the universe’s infancy were dif-ferent from stars like our sun, which is mostly hydrogen, but alsocontains oxygen and carbon. Theearliest stars were primarily hydro-gen and helium. They also livedfast and died young.

When they died, they explodedas brilliant supernovae and seededthe universe with basic elementsfrom which future stars, includingour sun, were created.

If the first stars were indeed spinmachines, some of them likely diedas gamma-ray bursts, meaning sci-entists today would have a betterchance of detecting them.

Telescopes such as NASA’sSwift satellite have the ability tospy gamma-ray bursts, but have amuch harder time observing super-novae.

This “increases the chanceswe’ll directly observe the death ofmassive stars during that epoch,”said Jason Tumlinson of the SpaceTelescope Science Institute inMaryland, who had no role in thestudy.

MADRID – Lionel Messi’s clutch scoring was overshadowed by the loud complaining fromthe other side. Messi lit up an ill-tempered Champions League semifinal on Wednesday with twogoals in the last 15 minutes to give Barcelona a 2-0 victory against short-handed Real Madrid.

Inter Milan’s 1-0 defeat at Barcelonain the semifinals last year. Inter stilladvanced, then won the championshipagainst Bayern Munich.

“If I say to (the referee) and to UEFAwhat I think and feel, my career endstoday,” Mourinho said. “One day I hopeto get an answer to the question: Why?”Mourinho took a seat in the first rowbehind the dugout and began scribblinginstructions that were passed to assis-tant coach Aitor Karanka.

But there was no stopping Messi, whose second goal was a wonderfulexample of his trademark: a darting runand classic finish. It was Barcelona’sfirst win in three games between thebitter rivals in 12 days after a 1-1 leaguedraw and a 1-0 extra-time Copa del Reyfinal defeat.

Madrid’s defense in Tuesday’s re-turn leg will be short-handed with Pepeand Sergio Ramos both suspended.Ramos got a yellow card for a foul onMessi in the 53rd. Mourinho describedthe second leg in Barcelona as “mis-sion impossible” as he continued tobemoan his side’s treatment by the ref-eree.

“We’ll go there with pride, withoutPepe, who did nothing, without Ramos, who did nothing, and the coach whocan’t be on the bench,” he said. “If we

score a goal, they’ll kill us again. It’s aresult that is impossible. “Why in agame that was equal did he do what hedid? But he won’t answer, he’ll go homebecause he doesn’t have to answer toanyone.”

Messi’s 179th goal tied him withJosep Samitier as the third-leadingscorer for Barcelona, behind only CesarRodriguez (235) and Laszlo Kubala(196). “At 23 ... that’s incredible,”Guardiola said. Messi was not availablefor comment.

Both coaches had stoked tensions onthe eve of the match, with Guardiolalaunching an expletive-filled attack onMourinho, and the bad will spilled overinto the match.

Tensions first erupted in the 40thminute when Madrid defender AlvaroArbeloa was carded after a tussle withPedro Rodriguez, while Danny Alveswas shown a yellow card for a push onAngel Di Maria.

Substitute Barcelona keeper JoseManuel Pinto was the first to be sentoff for a red card at halftime as the twoteams skirmished while leaving thefield. That left Barcelona without a re-serve goalkeeper as the frustration ofnot capitalizing on 70 percent of thepossession in the first 45 minutesseemed to boil over.
