Village Head of Candi Kuning,I Made Mudita, said his party didnot reject or approve the continu-ation plan of the geothermal drill-ing project. However, the resi-dents expected the competent au-thorities related to the projectcould come down directly to com-munity for providing socializa-tion. “We would like to hear theresults of the study regarding tothe positive and negative impactsof the project, including studiesin terms of spiritual perspective,”he said on Sunday (May 1).

According to Mudita, as a vil-lage chief his party always sup-ported the geothermal project ifit was a government’s project. Geothermal power project at Bedugul, Candi Kuning Village, Baturiti Subdistrict, Tabanan, iswidely discussed by local residents. An issue came into view that it has been put into the top 10national projects resumed this year. Related to this matter, local residents asked further studies, including in-depth socialization related to the impacts.

six hamlets in the village did notunderstand thoroughly about thegeothermal project. They alsoworried if the project would havenegative impacts on the environ-ment such as collapsed ground, sulfuric smell and decline in thewater discharge of the LakeBeratan. “This should be social-ized to the community. Let themunderstand entirely,” he stated. He also hoped there would be ateam of engineers and higherpriests coming down to the villageto provide more in-depth study forthe community.

If the project continued, saidMudita, his party planed to pro-pose a number of agreements withthe operators. Among them, hisparty would request shares for thevillage and local residents priori-tized to work in the company. Ac-cording to Mudita, the geothermalprojects would be in direct con-tact with 7,000 residents inhabit-ing the Candi Kuning Village. Sofar, local residents had never beeninvited for a discussion related tothe project. However, a number ofvillage leaders and administratorshad been invited to listen to thepresentations of Pertamina andmanagement of geothermalprojects in the Bali House re-cently. But, residents had not beengiven the opportunity to speak onthe occasion.

Similar opinion was disclosed

by a Tabanan legislator fromCandi Kuning, Nyoman Suta. This politician doubling as aformer Hamlet Chief of Bukit1said that geothermal project hadbeen built since 2003-2004 pe-riod. However, up to these days, there had been no further activi-ties. There were only securityguards on duty at the location. “Ifit will be continued, there must besocial izat ion. If required, i tshould be deployed a team of re-searchers getting in touch withresidents,” said politician of theIndonesian Democratic Party ofStruggle (PDI-P). Previously, sixhamlets in the village of CandiKuning had cohesively supportedthe project. Hopefully, with morein-depth socialization, residentscould provide their support again.

So far he said there had beenno notification from the projectmanagement and Bali ProvincialGovernment related to continuationof the project plan. According toSuta, the circle of Tabanan Houseshould ideally be involved in thediscussion regarding to the continu-ation of the power plant project. “Inessence, local residents are waitingfor socialization on the results ofmore comprehensive study of theproject. Furthermore, residents willdetermine their attitude,” he said.As for the attitude of the House, theformer Hamlet Chief of CandiKuning had not dared to give a de-cision because it concerned with theinstitution. The arrests are part of an inten-sified crackdown that followed mas-sive anti-regime protests last week.Rights groups say at least 545 Syr-ians have been killed since authori-ties began their crackdown on theuprising.

PARIS – Investigators have locatedand recovered the missing memory unitof the flight data recorder of a 2009 AirFrance flight — a remarkable deep-seadiscovery they hope will explain whythe aircraft went down in a remote areaof the mid-Atlantic, killing all 228people on board.

France’s air accident investigationagency BEA said a search by a subma-rine probing 3,900 meters (12,800 feet)below the ocean’s surface located andrecovered the unit Sunday morning. The unit is now aboard the Ile de Sein,a ship that’s helping conduct the probe, the statement said.

The statement also included pho-tos of the recorder — a red cylinderpartially buried in sand on the seafloor. Judging from the photos, theunit appeared to be in good condi-tion. Still, BEA officials have warnedthat the recordings may yet prove un-usable, considering the pressure theywere subjected to for nearly twoyears.

CAIRO – Seif al-Arab Gadhafi escaped a U.S. airstrike targeting his father’s compound inTripoli in 1986. Twenty-five years later, the Libyan leader’s second-youngest son was reportedlykilled in a NATO airstrike.

ter Libya was blamed for mastermind-ing a bombing in West Berlin that killedan American soldier and a woman. His15-month-old adopted sister was killedand his younger brother Khamis badlywounded in the attack.

Seif al-Arab was hospitalized butdischarged after a few days, and hisinjuries were never fully known to re-porters.

He spent most of his later years inGermany, where he was said to bestudying for an economics graduatedegree. His elder brother, Seif al-Islam,is believed to have been groomed tosucceed his father. The youngestGadhafi, Khamis, 27, leads an elitemilitary brigade named after him, known to be Libya’s most well-trained.

Three other older brothers, Al-Saadi, Al-Moatassem and Hannibal, have been engaged in either seniormilitary and national security advisoryposts or business deals, and recentlybegan competing with Seif al-Islam,who has appeared to be monopoliz-ing his father’s and international at-tention, according to U.S. diplomaticcables published by the secret-spillingwebsite WikiLeaks.

The cables described a brewing sib-ling rivalry that was expected to bodeill for Libya’s political transition aheadof the developing upheaval. The onlydaughter, Aisha, a lawyer in her mid-thirties, was also vying for a promi-nent role, often disagreeing with Seifal-Islam.

Anti-government protests resume in Maldivesin the earlier protest. Police had setup barricades and were ready withanti-riot gear.

Police spokesman Ahmed Shiyamsaid officers asked the protesters toleave but they started throwing ob-jects at police, resulting in the clashesearly Sunday. He said 10 people werearrested for damaging property.

Mohammed Shareef, a spokesmanfor the opposition Dhivehi RaithungeParty, said about 44 protesters weretaken away by police, including twoparty lawmakers and leading activ-ists. There was no independent con-firmation of how many remain indetention.

Shareef insisted the protest waspeaceful until police used force, saying seven people were injured

and one remains hospitalized. The protesters are mainly upset

over the government’s decision lastmonth to allow the Maldivian cur-rency, the Rufiyaa, to float againstthe U.S. dollar. A sudden devalua-tion of the currency has resulted inhigher prices for essential com-modities, most of which are im-ported.

Last month, the agency said the un-dersea search had identified the “chas-sis” that had held the recorder, but thememory unit was still missing. De-tached from the chassis, the memoryunit was found nearby, the spokes-woman said. The flight data recorderstores technical data from the flight. An-other so-called “black box” recordscockpit conversations. The secondblack box has not yet been found, butthe submarine probes were continuing, the spokeswoman said.

Investigators hope Sunday’s remark-able discovery will allow them to de-termine what caused the June 1, 2009crash of Flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro,Brazil, to the French capital, Paris. Theaircraft slammed into the Atlantic north-east of Brazil after running into an in-tense high-altitude thunderstorm.

Automatic messages sent by the Air-bus 330’s computers showed it was re-ceiving false air speed readings fromsensors known as pitot tubes. Investi-gators have said the crash was likelycaused by a series of problems, and notjust sensor error.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s annualinflation slowed further in April asfood prices eased, giving the centralbank room to leave rates on holdagain this month, though economistsstill expect a hike this quarter as coreinflation picks up.

Analysts are pushing back or re-ducing their forecasts for rate hikesby Bank Indonesia this year after thethird consecutive month of slowerheadline annual inflation, whicheased to a six-month low of 6.16percent, below forecasts for 6.37percent.

Core inflation — which excludesadministered prices and volatilefoods, but includes gold prices thatreached a record high last week —picked up just ahead of forecasts to4.62 percent year-on-year.

“This steady increase in coreprices, suggesting that price pres-sures are becoming more rather thanless widespread in the economy, should have the central bank think-ing about lifting interest rates againafter having only delivered one 25basis points hike since the financialcrisis, but it seems in no hurry andindeed keener to have the rupiah asthe main guard against imported in-

In the meantime, foreignministry‘s spokesman MichaelTene said he has yet to confirm therelease of MV Sinar Kudus by theSomali pirates who had been hi-jacked since March 16, 2011. Hesaid agreement on releasing thevessel was just between the ship‘sowners and the pirates.

Michael also cannot explainabout payment of the ransom of4.5 million US dollars, adding thatsuch agreement was purely be-tween the company and the pi-rates.

As reported by Reuters, the pi-rates had already released the In-donesian cargo ship after theowner paid the ransom.

MV Sinar Kudus had been hi-jacked by the pirates on March 16,2011 about 512 kilometers northof East Socotra in the Somali wa-ters with a crew of 31, including20 Indonesians.

The pirates said they had freedthe ship after the ransom had beendropped on them by the air.

Indonesia inflation slows in Aprilflation,” said George Worthington, chief economist at IFR Markets inAsia.

Bank Indonesia has said it will letthe rupiah strengthen to help reduceimported inflation. The currencywas little changed after the data at8,548 per U.S. dollar by 0600 GMT,having touched a 7-year high earlierin the day.

Fauzi Ichsan, economist at Stan-dard Chartered, said the currencystill had room for appreciation andcould surpass the bank’s year-endforecast of 8,500 rupiah per dollarin the near term.

Most analysts see the central bankholding rates again in May after asurprise 25 basis points hike in Feb-ruary that was aimed at calmingmarket worries after inflationpeaked at 7 percent in January. How-ever, analysts still forecast anotherrate hike may come as early as Juneor July.

“I think Bank Indonesia is justgoing to raise it once this year, inJuly to 7 percent, at a time whenpeople are preparing for theRamadhan fasting month,” saidAnton Gunawan, economist at BankDanamon in Jakarta.

Cooler inflation has helped inves-tor confidence. Foreigners have re-

turned to buy Indonesian govern-ment bonds after a sell-off early thisyear, with net buying of 5.72 trillionrupiah ($663 million) last month, while the stock market is at a recordhigh.

Bank Indonesia has said it re-mains in a tightening stance andthere is room for further rate adjust-ments to manage inflationary pres-sures, but it remains less hawkishthan many regional peers.

Thailand’s central bank is likelyto hike its policy rate again at its nextmeeting on June 1, after data onMonday showed annual inflation at4.04 percent in April, far higher thanthe 3.20 percent forecast by econo-mists, due to a rise in food prices.

Thai annual core inflation, whichexcludes fresh food and energyprices, also jumped to 2.07 percentin April from 1.62 percent in March, and Thailand’s central bank uses thisrate to guide monetary policy. Mosteconomists expect a 25 basis pointincrease to 3 percent at the nextmeeting.

The Bank of Thailand said onThursday it expected core inflationto go above its targeted range of 0.5to 3.0 percent at some stage this year, but it forecast 2.3 percent for the fullyear.

Lempog:Sweet side of cassava cake

To get different flavor, cassava can be served inmany ways. One of them is by making it into lempogcake. In the past, this cake was popular and oftenserved in social activities such as activities at ricefield or socio-religious ones. The reason for this waseasy to make and its raw material was widelyavailable at rural area as they cultivated it.

By nature, it is made from boiled cassava. Withadditional ingredients like palm sugar and salt, theyare pounded together in the mortar or plastic base.By doing so, it will be easier to turn each side of thebatter in order it will be tender evenly. PARIS – French Finance Min-ister Christine Lagarde on Mondaywelcomed the killing of al Qaedaleader Osama bin Laden and saidhis death could bolster consumerconfidence and economic growthin the United States.

“The U.S. economy is like theAmerican people. It reacts veryquickly either positively or nega-tively,” Lagarde told France 2 tele-vision. “I wouldn’t be surprised ifthis event prompted a pick-up inconfidence.”

Ruling and opposition lawmakersput aside their differences in an effortto launch efforts to rebuild the country’squake-hit northeast as quickly as pos-sible.

But analysts warned the passing ofthe budget will not ease pressure onunder-fire Prime Minister Naoto Kan,who has faced criticism over thegovernment’s handling of the crisis andthe subsequent nuclear emergency.

The extra budget, which totals 4.015trillion yen, will cover restoration worksuch as clearing massive amounts ofrubble and building temporary hous-ing for the thousands of people wholost their homes.

The 9.0-magnitude earthquake andtsunami on March 11 left nearly 26,000dead or missing and crippled a nuclearpower plant, which has been releasingradioactive materials into the environ-ment.

The nuclear accident and the natu-ral disaster have forced the evacuationof more than 150,000 people from theirhomes.

OMAHA – Warren Buffettdoes not spend his time makingstock research recommendations, but he is sure of one thing —America should have a “strongbuy” slapped on it.

Tens of thousands of BerkshireHathaway shareholders who de-scended on Omaha this weekendfor the conglomerate’s annualmeeting got one unmistakablemessage from Buffett — no mat-ter how bad the economy, or thedeficit, or the political divide, theUnited States is as good a placeto live and work as ever.

“I don’t see how anybody canbe other than enthused about thiscountry,” Buffett told Berkshireshareholders on Saturday.

Buffett, often called the“Oracle of Omaha,” is one of theworld’s richest men and leads aconglomerate that owns rail-roads, insurers and ice cream par-lors.

The comments echo thoseBuffett made in February in hisannual shareholder letter, but thewords still may encourage inves-tors looking sideways at thecountry, particularly after Stan-dard & Poor ’s put the U.S.government’s critical “AAA”credit rating on a negative creditwatch.

Buffett told Reuters Insiderthat S&P’s move was premature, given the U.S. government issuesdebt only in dollars and can sim-ply print more money to pay debtif absolutely needed.

TOKYO – Japan’s parliament on Monday passed an emergency 4 trillion yen ($49 billion)relief budget to help fund reconstruction after the deadly March 11 earthquake and tsunamidevastated northeastern regions.

divert some funds originally aimed atsupporting pensions and child allow-ances, while also slashing plans to can-cel highway tolls.

Kan plans to submit a “sizeable”second extra budget later to be financedby a government bond issue.

But the prospect of more deficit-spending has placed higher interna-tional scrutiny on the second extra bud-get, as such steps would further worsenJapan’s battered finances, amid calls forhigher taxes to pay for relief measures.

Japan has struggled to whittle downa public debt mountain at around 200percent of GDP, the highest levelamong industrialised nations.

Last week ratings agency Standard& Poor’s cut its outlook on Japan’s sov-ereign debt following the quake-tsu-nami disaster, citing the risk of a down-grade if Japan’s fiscal situation dete-riorates more than expected.

It also warned that reconstructioncosts could pass $600 billion. The topend of the government’s estimate ofdirect damage from the earthquake andthe tsunami is at around $300 billion.

Before the quake, differences be-

tween opposition and ruling partiesdelayed the passage of the regular bud-get for the fiscal year that started inApril and prevented the enactment ofcrucial funding measures yet to clearparliament.

Japan’s unpopular Prime Ministeron Sunday pleaded for public “under-standing” after a poll showed three-quarters of people questioned his lead-ership and handling of the crisis.

In a weekend telephone survey byKyodo news agency, 76 percent of1,010 respondents believed Kan was“not exercising leadership” in dealingwith the March 11 quake and tsunamiand the ensuing crisis at a nuclear powerplant.

A senior nuclear adviser to Kan sub-mitted his resignation Friday, and in atearful press conference said the gov-ernment had ignored his advice andfailed to follow the law.

Toshiso Kosako, a Tokyo Univer-sity professor who was named in Marchas an adviser to Kan, said the govern-ment had only taken ad hoc measuresto contain the crisis at the crippledFukushima nuclear power plant.

The death of the terrorist leaderwho masterminded the deadly Sep-tember 11 attacks on New York andWashington, would help heal awound that had been open fornearly a decade, she said.

Bin Laden had been the objectof a search since he eluded U.S. sol-diers and Afghan militia forces in alarge-scale assault on the Tora Boramountains of Afghanistan in 2011.

Buffett remains solidon the Americaneconomy

“The United States is not go-ing to default on any obligation,”Buffett told Insider in an inter-view after the annual meeting.“We are not a credit risk, believeme.”

Where Buffett’s enthusiasmwanes to any degree, it is mostlyin conversation on the dollar, which he said is sure to weakenover time, like most other curren-cies.

Buffett, as usual, said he wasshying away from fixed-incomeinvestments for Berkshire’s part, even as he keeps some of his per-sonal wealth in Treasuries forsafety’s sake.

Some worry that safety couldbe threatened by the debate overthe national debt ceiling, an issuethat has divided Congress in re-cent weeks and gotten more tenseas the country gets closer to itslegal limit on debt issuance.

Buffett, asked about the possi-bility Congress would not raisethe ceiling, made one of his most-repeated comments of the wholeweekend, saying it would be thelegislature’s “most asinine act” inits history.

Buffett also affirmed his sup-port for the banking sector, wherehe has big bets on Wells Fargo andU.S. Bancorp, calling the odds ofanother banking crisis “very verylow.”

His partner, Vice ChairmanCharlie Munger, was less san-guine about Europe and the ef-fects of the sovereign debt crisis, saying the continent has “a hellof a problem” in comparison.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – A child-hood fascination with archaeologyand a chance encounter with a2,700-year-old Egyptian mummyare helping Vermont doctors andlaw enforcement officials find truthin some of the most challenging ofmodern-day crimes: the unex-plained deaths of young children.

WARSAW – Poland is dreaming of becoming a European shale gas El Dorado thanks to estimates ofhuge deposits, which if confirmed could make it an natural gas powerhouse and free it from energy depen-dence on Russia. “If early estimates are confirmed, it will be a revolution like in Norway or Great Britainafter the discovery of natural gas in the North Sea,” Piotr Krzywiec, a geologist at Poland’s NationalInstitute of Geology (PIG) told AFP in a recent interview. “Poland could become Europe’s number one orone of its largest natural gas producers,” he adds.

Currently, ex-communist Po-land, a 2004 EU nation of 38 mil-lion people, covers 30 percent of itsgas needs from domestic resourcesbut Russian imports account for over40 percent of consumption, with therest coming from other countries.

Initial studies suggest the shaledeposits run in a huge 650 kilometre-long (404 miles) diagonal belt acrossPoland, stretching from the north-ern Baltic Sea coast to the easternborder with Belarus and Ukraine.

Over the last two years, leadinginternational fuel companies havedescended on Poland with drilling

rigs to explore the possibility of com-mercial extraction. Poland has al-ready issued nearly 90 exploration li-cences and the country’s liberalleader, Prime Minister Donald Tuskhas said he’s determined to see the“exploration and exploitation of shalegas in Poland become a fact.”

“If possible, we must exploit ev-ery cubic meter of shale gas,” he said. However, serious environmental con-cerns have put the breaks on shale gasdevelopment elsewhere.

Fracking, the principle extractionmethod in shale gas production in-volves injecting massive volumes ofwater and chemicals into shale orsandstone deposits under high pres-sure to force out the gas, includingmethane.

Simoncelli blames cold tyres for crashfor the victory,” Simoncelli told theofficial MotoGP website.

“I did maybe a little mistake. ButI think the fault is of the cold tyreon the left side, because in the exitof Turn 1 we inclined the bike a littlebit on the left on acceleration andthere for the first time I lost the rear.

“So in the other corners I paidattention, especially in Turn 4, I didthe corner with one gear higher tohave the bike more neutral andsmooth but in the middle of the cor-ner, without throttle, I crashed. There was nothing I could do.” Hewas still upbeat about his weekend, saying it had been more importantto show he was quick enough tofight at the front.

“I’m so sorry for me, for my

team, but this is racing,” saidSimoncelli. “The good thing is thatI’m fast and our potential is high, and we’ll try to do better in the nextrace.”The Gresini Honda rider ad-mitted that the accident had been apainful one.

“I have a little bit of pain in myback, and also some problems withmy neck,” he said. Simoncelli’sweekend was also notable for a pub-lic row over with Jorge Lorenzo overon-track ethics during the post-qualifying press conference. TheItalian said the tension betweenthem would remain.

“With Lorenzo, nothingchanged,” Simoncelli said. “I didn’tspeak with him before and I’ll con-tinue with not speaking.”
