Head of Badung Agricultural,Plantation and Forestry Services,IGAK Sudaratmaja, Wednesday(Feb 23), said his party would per-form a study on the implementa-tion of festival. However, he wasnot sure when the festival could berealized, including the amount ofbudget allocated. He argued it hap-pened because his party would justpropose the budget for the studyin the budget amendment 2011.

Sudaratmaja admitted if so farmany parties felt pessimistic in re-sponse to the government’s effortsin promoting the agricultural sec-tor. Moreover, the Badung Re-gency along with agricultural sec-tor continued to be impelled bytourism sector.

On that account, his party woulddesign a concept of synergy this

NusaPenida is also no longer in the statusof extraordinary incident (KLB).However, there are five cases of dogbites under observation to monitor itsdevelopment. “Some of them indeedhave passed through the critical pe-riod (two weeks—Ed),” said the Headof Klungkung Animal Husbandry,Fisheries and Maritime Affairs (PPK),Gusti Ngurah Badiwangsa, Wednes-day (Feb 23).

The five cases of dog bite were inthe region of Nusa Penida III. It in-cluded the Batukandik Village. Onaverage, the biting dogs remained tobe taken care of. According toBadiwangsa, if they were positive torabies, the dog would die immediatelyas soon as biting humans.

So far, thousands of stray dogs hadbeen eliminated in Klungkung Re-gency. Particularly in Nusa Penida thenumber of dogs eliminated was reach-ing 4,352. “Today, it can be said thatKlungkung is free from rabies. Asidefrom being eliminated, virtually alldogs had been tied up and vaccinated. To deal with rabies, we involve thecustomary village and it has beenproven effective,” he added. For theprogram in 2011, the handling wasgoing to be focused on workshop orprovision of counseling for custom-ary village. PPK had prepared a bud-get worth IDR 300 million taken fromRegional Budget 2011.

Badung Regency Government through the Badung Agricultural, Plantation and Forestry Ser-vices is preparing an Agricultural Festival in North Badung. Such a program will be proposed tobe included in the budget amendment 2011. Regency Government claims this effort as a realmeasure to synergize the agricultural sector with tourism.

year between tourism and agri-cultural sector more obviouslythrough Agricultural Festivalprogram in North Badung. Thisfestival was inspired by the factthat North Badung had not yethad a specific icon. “Central andSouth Badung, as you know, have had the Nusa Dua Fiesta,Kuta Karnival and Badung Re-gency Arts Festival. Well, wewant that North Badung have anicon, too,” he observed.

He also added that NorthBadung had a considerable agri-cultural potential, then the mostappropriate event was the festi-val of agricultural products. Oneof the areas that would becomean icon was the Tukad BangkungBridge in Plaga, Petang Subdis-trict. Other than absorbing the

local agricultural products, it wasalso claimed as an effort to re-kindle the tourism village. More-over, out of 10 tourism villages inBadung Regency, four of whichwere in North Badung especiallyin Petang.

In the region, he said, his partywanted a festival featuring a widerange of agricultural productspacked with art performance orcultural tradition. For example, the event would be graced withogoh-ogoh effigy made fromfruits or flowers denoting the na-tive products of Badung. In addi-tion, the festival would also bebundled with various interestingand interactive activities thatcould be joined by tourists suchas the race of catching eels.(kmb25)

Similarly, Bali Province hadthe Regional Regulation Number: 15/2009 concerning with rabies. “Refer-ring to the regulations, there are threelines of authority in the KlungkungRegency that should work togethernamely the regent as coordinator,Health Services and the PPK. Domainof their duties should be adjusted. Lessmaximal proceeds were caused by thefunction that does not work well,” hesaid.

He mentioned that for rabies treat-ment, the Bali Provincial Governmenttogether with the entire regencies/cityin Bali had actually established coop-eration with a foundation (BAWA).However, Klungkung Regency wasnot involved in the signing of theMemorandum of Understanding(MoU) because the rabies manage-ment strategy run by BAWA was in-appropriate and tended to be less ef-fective. Therefore, Klungkung de-cided to handle with its own strategy.“Initially, Klungkung had participatedin the co-operation. But when the co-operation has run, it was not goingwell. For example, when there was abite case in Klungkung, BAWA didnot come to Klungkung. Even, it hasbeen contacted for several times,” saidBadiwangsa. He also questioned toBAWA why it could happen. “In fact, the BAWA side recommended me togo out from the collaboration. Yes, weaccept it. After all, we have our ownstrategies and they are proven effec-tive,” he said. Indeed, he said, somevictims in Klungkung died of rabies. However, it occurred beforeKlungkung handled its own cases.(kmb20)

Temple CeremonyCalendar Event for February 1 through March 2, 2011

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annualCeremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Ba-linese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine whicheach family possesses. Because of this practically every fewdays a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in someVillage in Bali. There are also times when the entire islandcelebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan,Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day,Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is consid-ered its birth day and celebration always takes place on thesame day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When newmoon is used then the celebration always happens on new moonor full moon. The day of course can differ the religious cel-ebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some templecelebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakihtemple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and mostof the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importanceof the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. BERN, Switzerland – Google Inc. asked a Swiss court Thursday to lift curbs on its Street Viewservice that have prevented the Internet search giant from updating the popular ground-levelpictures in Switzerland for more than a year. The country’s strict privacy laws have proved aheadache for the California company as it seeks to provide comprehensive 360-degree panoramasof streets and buildings around the world.

Street View breaches basic principles ofprivacy.”

The company has faced similar con-cerns in many of the 27 countries whereStreet View is available, including theUnited States and Germany. In Israel, officials have expressed worry that theStreet View might be used for terrorismand instructed the company to modifythe service. Thuer wants Google to guar-antee that all faces and car plates areblurred — if necessary by checking allpictures manually.

He also demanded that private gar-dens and sensitive locations such asschools, hospitals and women’s sheltersbe obscured. Google lawyers counteredthat the company is continually improv-

ing its Street View technology and thatthe images are too banal, and of too poorquality, to be used to identify individu-als whose privacy might be breached.

The case has generated enormousinterest in Switzerland. Google has oneof its biggest offices outside the UnitedStates in Zurich, where hundreds ofengineers develop new services for thecompany.

About one in four Swiss have usedStreet View, according to Google. Thecompany said last week that it isworking to expand the service tocover the ski slopes aroundSwitzerland’s iconic Matterhornmountain. The court is expected todeliver its verdict at a later date.

Mideast turmoil rattles Iran-Saudi standoffshaped by the fall of decades-old re-gimes and growing pressures on oth-ers, including Moammar Gadhafi’s 42-year rule in Libya. But the ultimate ques-tions for many are whether the pro-Western Saudi monarchy can ride outthe unrest, and if Iran will capitalize onthe changes with more footholds andinfluence in areas closely tied toWashington’s interests.

“If an uprising occurs in SaudiArabia, it will have a dramatic impactthat is off the charts,” said TheodoreKarasik, a regional affairs expert at theDubai-based Institute for Near East andGulf Military Analysis. “Policymakerswill have to grapple with it for decades.”

Both nations have been touched by

the region’s two-month-old turmoil:Iran with a renewal of street clashes andSaudi’s rulers facing rare challenges totheir absolute power, including a callfor protests March 11. Their responses, meanwhile, have reflected their mutualsuspicions and their own survival in-stincts.

Saudi authorities have stood stronglybehind Bahrain’s Sunni monarchy, which is under siege by a revolt fromthat tiny kingdom’s Shiite majority af-ter decades of grievances over discrimi-nation and other abuses. For the Saudis— and the rest of the Gulf’s Sunni rul-ers — the Shiites in Bahrain representa potential beachhead for Shiite pow-erhouse Iran.

But the president did not men-tion Libya’s ruthless and unpre-dictable leader Kadhafi, who hasruled for decades and frequentlydefied the United States, by name.Seeking to corral international ac-tion on Libya, Obama said that insuch a volatile situation, it was“imperative” for nations to speakwith one voice.

JAKARTA – Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Bashir on Thursdaydenied leading an Al-Qaeda-style group that was plotting attacks andassassinations in Indonesia, as his trial resumed amid tight security.

Its operations leader, Indone-sian bomb maker Dulmatin, waskilled by police in March last year.Scores of other members of thegroup have been killed or captured.

Bashir denies any involvementin terrorism and claims he is be-ing framed by the United Statesand its allies including Australiaand “the Jews”.

He is an alleged co-founder ofthe Jemaah Islamiyah regional ter-ror organisation blamed for mul-tiple attacks including the 2002Bali bombings which killed 202people, mainly Western tourists.

Bashir claims that attack was ac-tually a US missile strike. The Islamicteacher, whose former students readlike a who’s-who of Indonesian ex-tremism, served almost 26 monthsbehind bars for the Bali bombings buthis conviction was overturned afterhis release in 2006.Prosecutors havealso unsuccessfully charged him withinvolvement in church bombings in2000 and the Marriott hotel attack inJakarta in 2003.

Two years after his release fromprison Bashir founded anothergroup, Jemaah Ansharut Tauhid(JAT), to continue agitating forsharia law.Police say JAT was afront for a new campaign of ter-rorism in the world’s most popu-lous Muslim-majority state.

But Bashir said the Aceh groupwas only doing was had been “or-dered by God to deter Muslim en-emies so that they won’t dare toharm Muslim communities”.

Some 80 percent of Indonesia’s240 million people are Muslimsand the country has a reputationas a bastion of pluralist tolerance.

But its moderate image has beenshaken by recent attacks on religiousminorities including Christians andthe Ahmadiyah Islamic sect.

The Ahmadiyah teachings weremisleading and deviant because itsfollowers acknowledged anotherprophet after Prophet Muhammad(peace is upon him), he added.

On February 18, a number of Is-lamic organizations and the Indone-sian Council of Ulemas (MUI) inBanten had also asked the governmentto ban the Ahmadiyah sect in the prov-ince soon.

“Before the Cikeusik incident onFebruary 6, the MUI had actuallyurged the provincial government toban all the activities of the Ahmadiyahsect,” MUI-Banten chapter`s chair-man KH Aminudin Ibrahim said.

MUI, Nahdlatul Ulama,Muhammadiyah, and Religious Fol-lowers‘ Harmony Forum (FKUB) inBanten Province had agreed to againcall on the provincial government to

ban all activities of the Ahmadiyah,he said.

The ban could be imposed througha Banten governor‘s or provincial gov-ernment regulation, Ibrahim said.

A series of attacks on Ahmadiyahreligious sect followers and their prop-erties have occurred in some parts ofIndonesia over the past two years.

The latest incident happened inUmbulan village Cikeusik subdistrict,Pandeglang district, Banten province,on February 6, killing three people.

In response to the latest incident,Former Vice President Jusuf Kalla saidthe cases of sectarian violence couldbe handled if firm law enforcementwas implemented to the perpetrators.

“Don`t let the perpetrators be un-touched by the law. If it is so, therewill be a feeling that if we kill ordestroy properties in a mass, wethink that the law cannot do any-thing,” he said.

A lecturer on Faculty of Economicfrom Udayana University, Prof. Dr. IMade Kembar Sri Budhi, said the im-pact of foreign investment would leadto multiyear effects including the in-creasing employment opportunities, purchasing power of the public andincreasing demand in the domesticmarket.

“Bali absolutely needs investmentsin improving the macro economy. However, government should sort outany permit of investment issuedwhether it does not harm the environ-ment or other aspects,” he said

According to him, theoretically, investment was very important as themain motor of development and long-term economic growth. Without in-vestment, the long-term economicgrowth could not be achieved.

“Investors that will invest in Balishould be led to other sectors. So far, they were focused on tourism sector, while agricultural and SME sector areuntouched. Of course, it requires anincentive such as simplicity of licens-ing or other requirements to attractthem,” he said.

He said it was needed a commonidea of investor, government and re-lated community sector how to de-velop the agriculture and SMEs so theycould grow together harmoniously. Sofar, the two sectors almost had no spaceto develop a business. Access to mar-ket their local products was almostclosed.

Meanwhile, investment growth inBali during the period of 2011 was tar-geted to reach IDR 15.79 trillion, withthe growth of foreign investment anddomestic investment reaching IDR 4trillion. The figure increased from thetarget set in 2010 coming to IDR 12, 9trillion where the realization of domes-tic and foreign investment reached IDR3.1 trillion.

Chief of Bali Investment Board(BPM), I Nyoman Suwirya Patra, statedthat investment climate in Indonesia, especially Bali, in 2010 showed a sig-nificant growth. Bali was ranked fourth, while the first position was occupiedby Greater Jakarta and then followedby East Java and Papua in the secondand third position. Therefore, local gov-ernment was called upon to be moreselective and cautious in issuing per-mit of investment so as not to disturbthe ecosystem.

The hatching process will nor-mally take about one month until ayoung turtle is hatched which thenare released back into the sea. Thebig threat for the young turtle when

Bayung Gede Village,Kintamani subdistrict, Bangli Re-gency, is developed into a tourismpilot project 2010. “Previously, wehave already made comprehensivestudies on various aspects and isnow determined to be a pilot projectof community-based tourism2010,” said Village Chief of BayungGede I Wayan Suwela, recently.

He added, since the village wasdeclared as a pilot project, his partyreceived the help and facilities fromthe National Program for Commu-nity Empowerment (PNPM).Bayung Gede Village is one of 11villages in Indonesia developed intoa pilot project for community-basedtourism.

Meanwhile, Udayana Universityhas performed various studies in re-lation to the project since 2005 con-cerning with several aspects ofBayung Gede Village. “PreviouslyBayung Gede Village was just as abackup, but having been reviewedby a team from central government, our village were finally selected,”he explained.

Similarly, he mentioned that the

Bayung Gede Village a Tourism Pilot Projectbasic reason on the selection ofBayung Gede Village as tourism pi-lot project 2010 was stated in theletter from the Coordinating Minis-try for People’s Welfare No.10.13.834/KMD/D/VII/V/2010.With the publication of the letter, itmeant in the development of com-munity-based cultural tourism ofBayung Gede, the governmentwould allocate a fund worth IDR 2.5billion.

The main factor of Bayung GedeVillage selected as a pilot project, according to Suwela, was caused bya unique tradition owned by the vil-lage prevailing a prohibition to new-lywed couple. In the village, thecouple recently married is not al-lowed to enter into the home yardand not regarded as residents of theBayung Gede Village before payingtumbakan (a kind of dowry) submit-ted to the village in the form of twobulls and undertaking particular fast-ing.

In addition, the newlywed couplewas required to make a processioncalled penyekeban (maturation) byliving in a small shack at the end of

the local village. In addition to thisunique tradition, Bayung Gede alsohas a system of government prac-ticed from time immemorial calledsaih nembelas system. This tradi-tional government system, continuedSuwela, ran the administrationchaired by a leader managing thelocal temples and traditional village.“With this traditional leadership sys-tem, the residents of our village re-main well united up to these days,”he said.

Regarding to livelihood, he ex-plained that since 2005 most localresidents had relied on the crops ob-tained from planting citrus, whilepreviously they only cultivated cas-sava and gogo rice variety plantedon non-irrigated field.

In the meantime, for the man-agement of Bayung Gede Villageas a tourism pilot project, Suwelaadded, his party would establish acommittee. “In years to come, thiscommittee will manage the assis-tance obtained and at the sametime build the tourism at GedeBayung Village,” he concluded.(BTN/BB)

WASHINGTON – The Interna-tional Monetary Fund called for aweaker dollar to help the UnitedStates reduce its deficits with therest of the world and rebalance theglobal economy, in a report releasedWednesday.

In the report prepared for aGroup of 20 finance chiefs meet-ing last week, the IMF said that itscalculations showed the dollar re-mains “on the strong side” of me-dium-term fundamentals, while theeuro and the Japanese yen were“broadly in line” and several Asiancurrencies, including China, wereundervalued.

To address global imbalances, the G20 should allow the dollar tofall, the Washington-based institu-tion said.

“Some further real effective de-preciation of the US dollar wouldhelp ensure a sustained decline ofthe US current account deficit to-wards a level more consistent withmedium-term fundamentals, help-ing to support more balanced

Sales of these distressed properties also fell in the fourthquarter, hurt by continued weakness from the expiration ofthe homebuyer tax credit and temporary halts in foreclosuresales from several major lenders.

Sales of homes owned by banks or in some stage of fore-closure decreased 31.1 percent in 2010 from 2009 to 831,574and were down 13.8 percent from 2008. Sales of homes thatwere not in foreclosure also decreased for the year, down nearly19 percent from 2009, RealtyTrac said.

Sales of foreclosed homes made up 26 percent of all homesales, down from 29 percent in 2009 and up from 23 percentin 2008.

“We’re still seeing the volume of sales activity on thesetypes of properties way beyond what we would normally seein a given year, but it’s not keeping pace with how quickly theindustry is creating the inventory,” said Rick Sharga, seniorvice president at RealtyTrac.

The glut of inventory on the market — and more coming withfresh foreclosures — is one of the biggest challenges for the strug-gling housing market. However, demand remains weak, pushingprices down further. The average sales price on foreclosed homeswas 28.1 percent below the average of regular properties in 2010,compared to 27 percent the year before.

In the fourth quarter, foreclosure sales were down 22 per-cent from the previous quarter and down 45.4 percent fromthe fourth quarter 2009. Sales volume fell to its lowest levelsince the first quarter of 2008.

LONDON – Britain’s state-rescued Royal Bank of Scot-land said Thursday that netlosses narrowed sharply lastyear to £1.125 billion pounds(1.327 billion euros, $1.823billion) as bad debts tumbled.

Most of last year’s loss wasdue to a large exceptional chargeof £1.116 billion under the Brit-ish government’s asset protectionscheme, which is an insuranceplan to protect banks from lossesgenerated by high-risk assets.

growth,” the IMF said. The widening US current ac-

count deficit — a broad measure oftrade in goods, services, incomeand payment — rose a fifth straightquarter in the third quarter last year,to $127.2 billion, according to thelatest US official data.

The issue of a weak dollar is par-ticularly sensitive in Brazil, wherethe government has said an inter-national “currency war” is underway with the United States pump-ing cheap dollars into its post-cri-sis economy, while China’s yuansinks in tandem.

The IMF report was provided tofinance ministers and central bankgovernors of the G20 major devel-oped and emerging economies fortheir meeting Friday and Saturdayin Paris.

The G20 countries reachedagreement on a series of economicindicators to measure imbalanceswithin and between countries, withthe goal of helping nations avoid arepeat of the problems at the heartof the 2008 financial crisis.

The IMF urged stepped-up G20

efforts to sustain the global economicrecovery, citing elevated downsiderisks for advanced economies and“overheating” in some emergingeconomies.

Among the threats to globalgrowth, the IMF highlighted “insuf-ficient progress in developing me-dium-term fiscal consolidation plans, especially in the United States andJapan” and “sovereign and bankingsector risks in the euro area periph-ery.”

In emerging economies, the keypolicy challenge is to keep overheat-ing pressures in check and respondappropriately to capital inflows, theIMF said.

“In key surplus economies, over-heating pressures can be alleviatedby permitting currency appreciation, facilitating a healthy rebalancingfrom external to internal demand.”

King, who madethat point in a recent interview witha London radio station, repeated itto Morgan’s face during a prime-timereappearance Wednesday in the timeslot he ruled at CNN for 25 yearsuntil December. It was part of anawkward interview in which King,77, appeared to forget how manytimes he had been married.

Morgan, a British tabloid vet-eran, aggressively promoted his newshow before it started in January, suggesting it could be “dangerous”and aspired to become watercoolertalk. King suggested a quieter en-trance would have been more ap-propriate. King said he had seenabout eight of Morgan’s shows and“I haven’t seen dangerous yet.”

NEW YORK – MTV is naming its new digital musicawards the OMAs — and leaving the “O” up for grabs. The network is to announce Thursday that the O MusicAwards will take place April 28. MTV is leaving the“O” undefined and open to interpretation from viewers.

The awards, the network said, “honor the migrationof music to the digital space, and celebrate the art, art-istry and technology of digital music.” MTV plans topresent an untraditional, heavily interactive award show, spread out across multiple screens, including theInternet, social media and mobile.

MTV hopes the show will do for digital music what itsVideo Music Awards, launched in 1984, did for the musicvideo. “We think this space now needs an award show,”said Dermot McCormack, head of MTV Music Group digi-tal. “We think we’re fairly well qualified to come up with away of rewarding achievement in these new categories.”

MTV, which is part of the Viacom-owned MTV Net-works, will later announce a “hub” for the event andcategories. Categories could include things like best

King said he missed being partof the mix when big stories, likethe Middle East unrest, are unfold-ing. His post-prime-time career isemerging. He said he had a CNNspecial in the works for April andis about to launch a one-man the-ater show of jokes and old stories.

Morgan’s show started with abang, with Oprah Winfrey,Condoleezza Rice and Howard Sternamong his first week’s guests. Lately, his bookings illustrate the difficultiesin keeping up that pace. With theMiddle East unrest, Somalian pirateskilling Americans and the NewZealand earthquake all in the newson Tuesday, Morgan brought on Play-boy founder Hugh Hefner and hisyoung fiancee. Morgan gamely askedabout world affairs; Hefner seemedmore interested in mentioning howhis back still ached from a 1980s ac-cident where he had too many Play-boy Playmates in his bed.

“Piers Morgan Tonight” aver-aged 826,000 viewers during thelast two weeks, compared withKing’s 732,000 viewers during thesame two-week period last year.CNN executives are pleased, how-ever, that the percentage ofyounger viewers have increasedfar more dramatically.

CHRISTCHURCH – A 30 million tonne block of icesheared off a New Zealand glacier just minutes after a violentearthquake devastated the city of Christchurch, officials saidWednesday. The huge iceberg crashed into a lake shortly af-ter the 6.3 magnitude tremor rocked the South Island on Tues-day and created waves up to three metres high for 30 minuteswhich rocked two sightseeing boats on the lake at the time.

The enormous iceberg — estimated to weigh 30 to 40 mil-lion tonnes — began ripping off the Tasman Glacier at AorakiMount Cook National Park accompanied by a loud noise whichsounded like a rifle shot, a local tourism official said. AorakiMount Cook Alpine Village tourism manager Denis Callesensaid locals had been expecting a major iceberg to drop fromthe glacier for the past month, but the “curve ball” was thatthe event was caused by an earthquake.

“The earthquake that we felt herewas a swaying motion for about aminute, then it stopped and then itswayed for about another minute,” hetold AFP.

“Within about a minute of that hap-pening, the staff at the lake heard fromfive kilometres away (from the glacier)a sound that sounded like a rifle shotand then over the next two minutes allthe events started to unfold. “I have ab-solutely no doubt in my mind that theearthquake was the trigger.”

The Department of Conservationconfirmed that a “large chunk” of theglacier fell into the lake but was unableto say if this was caused by the earth-quake, which was only felt lightlyaround Mt Cook some 150 kilometres(93 miles) from the epicentre. “Youcould argue whether the earthquake pre-cipitated it or not — the fact is that theterminal face was about due to carveanyway,” area manager Richard

WASHINGTON – The world’s coral reefs could be wiped out by2050 unless urgent action is taken to stop threats posed to the“rainforests of the sea” by everything from overfishing to climatechange, a report warned.

cent of the colorful sea ecosystems. The impacts of climate change — a“global threat” to reefs — is com-pounding the local pressures.

“Warming seas have alreadycaused widespread damage to reefs, with high temperatures driving astress response called coral bleach-ing, where corals lose their colorfulsymbiotic algae, exposing their whiteskeletons,” the report says.

“In addition, increasing carbondioxide (CO2) emissions are slowlycausing the world’s oceans to becomemore acidic. Ocean acidification re-duces coral growth rates and, if un-checked, could reduce their ability tomaintain their physical structure.”

Quick, broad action could go along way to saving the reefs, whichhave shown themselves in the past tobe highly resilient, said LaurettaBurke, a lead author of the report, which was compiled by more thantwo dozen conservation and researchgroups led by World Resources In-ternational (WRI). A future with dy-ing or dead reefs is “not a future weare committed to,” Burke said.

Massive iceberg shears off after N. Zealand quakeMcNamara told AFP.

“The estimate of around 30 to 40 million tonnes of ice wouldbe at a rough estimate about right.” McNamara said the one-kilometre long piece of ice which carved off the glacier hadbroken into smaller icebergs, some of which were now about200 metres (650 metres) in length, and towering up to 50 metresabove the lake.

“It carved in one big lot; a face about a kilometre long carv-ing is a spectacular sight,” McNamara said, adding that theiceberg would then have popped up to the water like a por-poise before starting to break into smaller pieces.

He said that particular face of the glacier had experiencedsimilar events in recent years and it was not unusual to seehuge icebergs in the lake. However, the 7.0 magnitude quakewhich hit New Zealand in September had not produced a simi-lar event at Mt Cook, he said.

MILAN – Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal admitted he was surprised by Inter Milan’sattacking style as his side snatched a crucial 1-0 victory at the San Siro. Mario Gomez scored theonly goal of the game in the last minute after Inter’s Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar had failedto hold Arjen Robben’s stinging shot.

Inter have a lot of quality and they couldalso score in Munich.

“They have a good team and al-though we dominated the second half,in the last 10 minutes they created manychances and that’s a sign of quality. “Wewere lucky to score in the last minutebut then again we could have scoredbefore that. “In the final Inter were lessattacking but the result was different andhere it was better for us.

“But this is football. In the final wehad 65 percent of possession and herewe had only 55 percent, which is 10percent less. “We created less chancesthan in the final and they created eightchances here and only five in the final, but they scored from two of those five.”

“We can be very contented withour performance, it was a goodgame, Inter played well. “I have tosay there could have been a differ-

ent result but given that we wereplaying away and the way we domi-nated the second half, then we de-served to win.”

Bayern goalkeeper Thomas Kraftmade a number of crucial saves fromSamuel Eto’o and Houssine Kharjamost notably and Van Gaal paid trib-ute to his shot-stopper. “He’s aplayer in my team, he showed hisqualities, he has amazing reflexesand he’s very important to us. “Butwe created many more chances thanInter.” Inter coach Leonardo insistedthat his side are still well in this tie.

“I believe and that’s not just mebeing optimistic but becauses of thedesire that we showed despite hav-ing changed our system, we stillplayed very well,” he said. “There’svery little difference between winning1-0, drawing 0-0 and losing 1-0.

“We do not know how badFabregas’s injury is. It is of course aconcern that he is injured, but it isnot his fault, it is not my fault, it ispart of sport,” Wenger added.

Andhe added the way they won —without hitting top gear afterFabregas was forced off — was asign his team have matured. “Wehave matured certainly because wecould win a game when we wereless fluent,” he said.

“That has changed from one ortwo years ago, because when wewere not on our top game we woulddrop points. “I must give my play-ers a lot of credit for that.

“I think this is a relatively recentphenomenon, but one that I believeis being watched very closely,” JazzCEO Greg Miller said after tradingaway his All-Star point guard inexchange for rookie Derrick Fa-vors, point guard Devin Harris, twofirst-round draft picks and cash.

“I can only speak from the Jazzownership perspective in sayingthat I’m not interested in seeing acongregation of star players on ahandful of teams throughout theleague. I don’t think it does theteams any good. It doesn’t do thefans any good. It doesn’t do thesponsors any good. “I would liketo see as much parity as there canbe in the league. Beyond that, it’sall just speculation.”

SALT LAKE CITY – The second blockbuster NBA trade in two days sent Utah Jazz pointguard Deron Williams to the New Jersey Nets, shifting another star from the Western Confer-ence to the East and to a bigger market. Now, while the Nets hope they can keep their new All-Star long-term and turn him into a face-of-the-franchise player the way Jason Kidd was yearsago, small-market teams are left to wonder what the future holds for them. Is there somethingthe NBA should do to protect teams from losing their stars?

The German driver was withouta seat for 2011, and he conceded re-placing an injured driver made himhesitate because of the poor circum-stances. Heidfeld was Kubica’steam-mate at the BMW Sauberteam from 2006 to 2009.

THE Williams team unveiled onThursday its definitive colourscheme for the 2011 season TheGrove-based squad unveiled its2011 challenger, the FW33, earlierthis month and has been runningwith an interim livery during win-ter testing.

Nick Heidfeld has admitted he had to do some “intensivesoul searching” before accepting Robert Kubica’s drive at theRenault team. Heidfeld has been hired by Renault to replace

Kubica after the Pole was injured in a rally crash.

“I did some intensive soul search-ing - probably more intensive thanmost others would have done - andnow I would say that I have clearedthe situation for myself,” saidHeidfeld in an interview with theofficial Formula 1 website. “It was

not my fault what happened to Rob-ert and I truly wish he’ll be backsoon - that is one side. The other isthat I had to grab the opportunityand feel happy to be driving again.”

Heidfeld admitted, however, thatit was an opportunity that he couldnot miss, even if he is unsure if hewill see out the season.

“Whether it is for the whole sea-son is not clear right now, but ofcourse I am ready and available for

the whole season! The biggest sen-sation is that I did not expect to racethis year,” he said. “The test seasonhad already started, so I was in talkswith Mercedes to get my old jobfrom last year back, plus I had theoption to sit in one of ‘those’ cars, which I still had no interest in.

“This chance came completelyout of the blue. At the start of it therewas definitely the emotional need toget my head clear because there was

the emotional strain of coping withRobert’s accident while knowingthat this could be a chance for me.

“It was not an easy situation, butI had to take the chance that camemy way. In my long years in For-mula 1 I have made my own expe-riences. I only started to believe thatI am in again when the ink on thecontract had dried. Sure, I felthappy because it was so unex-pected.”
