Denpasar (Bali Post)—2010 Population Census (SP) which

has been running about for one monthin Denpasar seems to have reaped themaximum enough results. At least, 90percent of Denpasar residents had beenrecorded. If waiting until the deadline, the population census in Denpasar isensured to be completed. Head of Cen-tral Statistics Bureau (BPS) ofDenpasar, I Wayan Suta, when con-tacted last Monday (May 24) said hisparty had recorded 90 percent of thepopulation of Denpasar. Even, his offi-cials managed to record a number ofthe ship cabin crews (ABK) and thehomeless who presumably had no per-manent place of residence. In reality,he admitted to find a little difficulty incollecting the data of the homeless.“However, we could resolve such a dif-ficulty,” Suta said.

Furthermore, Suta said since hisparty had reached nearly 90 percent ofthe population having the identity cardof Denpasar, so starting last Monday(May 24) his party opened the BPScomplaint service desk. Such complaintdesk, said Suta, was specifically in-tended for residents of Denpasar thathad not been recorded. “Yes, we haveopened the service today (last Mon-

Head of Denpasar PublicWorks I Ketut Winarta accompa-nied by the Division Head ofHighway Construction Services IWayan Suratha, last Monday(May 24), said that the length ofsidewalks in Denpasar City basedon the existing data reached233.93 km, spreading across thefour subdistricts. Of this amount, only about 135 km was in goodcondition, while other 37 km wasin the medium condition. The re-maining about 61 km was in adamaged condition or flush withthe asphalt.

Related to the damage, hisparty had scheduled regular re-pairs. This was taken because thefunds allocated for the mainte-nance of roads and sidewalks infiscal year 2010 were very limitedreaching only IDR 5.21 billionmore.

“Because of limited budget, the

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Within five months of the year

2010, it was recorded 23,182 casesof dog bites in Bali and around20,103 cases got anti-rabies vaccine(VAR). This means about 80,000vials of VAR had been spent. Thisfigure is not much different from theyear 2009 where there were 53,000bite cases a year and spent about107, 000 vials of VAR. “In terms ofdevelopment of the bite cases forthe year 2010, they are almost thesame as in 2009 so it is predictedthe necessary funds required is al-most the same, maybe even more,”said the Head of Bali Health Ser-vices, Nyoman Sutedja, when metin his office last Monday (May 24).Total funding allocated for the pur-chase of VAR in 2009 was IDR 15billion.

Meanwhile, if seen from the lat-est data where there were some23,000 bite cases, only 20,000 vic-tims getting the VAR, while ap-proximately 3,000 other bite casesdid not get the VAR. Regarding tothis matter, Sutedja said the victimswho did not get the VAR mightthink that bitten by dog was normaland harmless. “Today, some people

maintenance of roads and side-walks in the city of Denpasar cannot be conducted simultaneously. However, the Denpasar PublicWorks still put emphasis based onpriority scale, by considering thelevel of damage,” said Winarta.

Winarta also added the totallength of the existing sidewalksdid not entirely belong to the roadof the regency. Approximatelymore than 45.25 km belonged toprovincial roads, while other 61.70km belonged to national roads. Forthe maintenance of sidewalks inthe provincial and national roads,Winarta said, his party remained tomake coordination with the BaliPublic Works. “If the province in-deed had funds for the mainte-nance, we will ask for immediaterepair. Otherwise, Denpasar CityGovernment through the PublicWorks will attempt to fix it,”Suratha added.

According to him, the damagedsidewalks in Denpasar City weregenerally caused by old enoughaged. In addition, it was alsocaused by frequent paving so manysidewalks were flush with the as-phalt. “Aside from being old, thesidewalks being flush with the as-phalt is often used for car parkingso they turn damaged quickly,” hesaid.

Furthermore, Suratha said, ex-cept for being used as a parking lot,the damaged sidewalks were alsocaused by roots of roadside treesand fiber optic cabling. Normally, after installing the cables, theworkers did not return it immedi-ately so that the Office of PublicWorks had to deploy some employ-ees to fix it.

When asked about the length ofsidewalks that had been repaired,Winarta said it was difficult tospecify considering the damage of

sidewalks was incidental. In addi-tion, the funds allocated for mainte-nance had included in to the roadmaintenance. “But from the allo-cated fund in 2010, IDR 4.05 billionis used for the procurement of mate-rials, including asphalt. Having been

put into tender, the value of contractagreed was IDR 3.71 billion more, namely for maintenance in four sub-districts. One of them is the improve-ment of sidewalk located on JalanDanau Tondano worth IDR 95 mil-lion,” explained Winarta. (kmb12)

Within five months, 23,000 people bitten by dog20,000 get VAR, while 3,000 others do not

start thinking if bitten by a dog isnormal. Just like when Bali has notbeen contracted by rabies. Such as-sumption is of course wrong,” hesaid.

He hoped that the public re-mained vigilant and tried to get theVAR if bitten by a dog or other ani-mals transmitting rabies (HPR). Ifthe VAR stock was empty, peopleshould not be afraid if a little late toget the VAR. “Late for one or twodays will not matter,” he said. Otherthan getting the VAR, the awarenessto keep the dog with a tie and to vac-cinate it should be certainly contin-ued. If the dog was released, theowner should let the dog be elimi-nated.

Sutedja continued, out of the19,000 VAR stock purchased by thefunds of Bali Provincial Govern-ment worth IDR 2.5 billion only left1,900 vials. This illustrated the highbite cases. Other than Bali Provin-cial Government, the inventories ofVAR has now been held by regen-cies such as by Denpasar, Badung,Gianyar, Tabanan and in the nearfuture Karangasem was also ex-pected to do so. Total funds ex-pended to purchase the VAR for sup-

plying all regencies was IDR 3 bil-lion. Then, to cover the needs of theVAR supply running low, accordingto Sutedja, his party had proposedadditional funds to Bali ProvincialGovernment as much as IDR 2 bil-lion and VAR support to the centralgovernment.

Regarding to the frequent un-availability of VAR at some rabiescenters in the regencies, such as inTabanan and Karangasem, accord-ing to Sutedja, it required coordina-tion of respective regency. For in-stance, when VAR stock started run-ning low, each rabies center had toquickly contact the Bali Health Ser-vices so it could send the VAR as-sistance. Or if there was regencyhaving more VAR stocks, it could beshared with regencies having a highbite case.

Meanwhile, for the case of a catbite occurred in Buleleng, basedon examination to sample of catbite it showed negative result.“So, there is no indication on thespread of rabies in animals otherthan dogs in Bali,” said Sutedja. For the case in Buleleng, otherthan bitten by cat, the victim hadbeen bitten by dog. (kmb24)

In Denpasar, populationcensus reaches 90 percent

day—ed). And this complaint serviceis intended for residents who had notrecorded previously,” explained Suta.

Nevertheless, since the 2010 Popu-lation Census was not over, officialswould continue to target the populationwhich had not been enumerated directly. This meant that there were some peoplewho had not had time to be interviewedin person by the officials. “Maybe, whenfirst time we visited them the concernedpersons were working or returning totheir home village. Therefore, weshould meet them again because theinterview could not be represented,” heasserted.

But what happened in the field, itremained to be found a number of rogueofficials. One of them was by provid-ing a sheet of paper containing somequestions for the house owner. The pat-tern was used by the officials becausethey found difficulty to meet the houseowner. When asking for confirmationrelated to this pattern, in fact it was notjustified. Suta said the way was not in-cluded in the working patterns of theofficials. “If there were such a pattern, please do not follow them up. Because, other than listing process, the officialsshould meet in person with the resi-dents,” he explained. (kmb12)

BAGHDAD – Masked gunmen attacked gold shops in Baghdad Tues-day, killing 15 people before they fled with a large quantity of gold, police and hospital officials said.

thorized to talk to the media. As Iraq’s sectarian violence has

ebbed, a new threat from violentcrime has cropped up. Tuesday’s at-tack was one of the deadliest in theupswing.

Many of those involved in thecrime wave are believed to be battle-experienced former insurgents un-able to find legitimate work. Theyoften bring the same brutality to theircrimes that they showed in the fight-ing that nearly pushed the country tothe brink of Sunni-Shiite civil war in2006 and 2007.

The result has been a wave ofthefts and armed robberies, hittinghomes, cars, jewelry stores, currency

exchanges, pawn shops and banks. There are few statistics tracking

the number and kinds of crimes, inpart because the government re-mains focused on the bombings andother insurgent attacks that continueto plague Baghdad and Iraq’s north.

But in the minds of the public, crime has become at least as con-suming as the violence directly re-lated to the war. And like the lack ofelectricity and other services, crimeis now a top complaint of Iraqis.

Some members of Iraq’s securityforces are also involved, perhaps asign that militants are still infiltrat-ing the security services.

In one of the most sensationalcrimes in recent years, several mem-bers of Iraq’s presidential guards —which protect senior officials —broke into the state-run RafidainBank on July 28 and stole about 5.6billion Iraqi dinars, or $4.8 million.

The beast withdrew the horn rap-idly and Aparicio managed to run tothe side of the ring for help.

Aparicio was initially treated atthe ring’s emergency medical unit, then transferred to the city’s Octo-ber 12th Hospital where he under-went a six-hour operation.

The October 12th Hospital saidin a statement that Aparicio’s con-dition was “evolving favorably” andthat his prognosis was “less serious.”

China’s rainy season, which be-gan this month, follows the worstdrought in a century for southernChina’s Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxiregions. The drought affected 61million people, leaving millions

without drinking water and 12 mil-lion acres (about 5 million hect-ares) left barren since last year.

If found guilty, Thaksin could intheory face the death penalty, butthe warrant appears aimed at boost-ing attempts to extradite Thaksin, who has found sanctuary in severalcountries.

The government has exerted pres-sure on countries he has visited andmoved to freeze his finances. Abhisitsaid the court ruling and the severity ofthe charge would help the government’sefforts to have Thaksin extradited.

“It will make our work with foreigncountries easier,” he told reporters.

“We still have to monitor his move-ments and seek cooperation in line withexisting agreements. As of now manycountries are banning him, but not all.”

Washington condemned the sinking, while China has been largely silentabout the behavior of its volatile ally.

Russia, which like China and theUnited States holds a veto in the Secu-rity Council, urged restraint. PresidentDmitry Medvedev urged both sides to“prevent a further escalation on the situ-ation on the Korean peninsula.”

Most analysts doubt either sidewould risk a war, which would be sui-cidal for the North and economy-ruin-ing for the South. The initial marketsfalls were triggered by a story by theSouth’s Yonhap news agency quotinga local report that the North was gear-ing up for war. It later emerged that thereport said only that the North wouldfight back if it was attacked.

“The Yonhap report ... chilled inves-tor sentiment as it highlighted SouthKorea’s geopolitical risks. And the tim-ing for such news could not be worse,as market sentiment was already shakywith renewed euro zone financialfears,” said Hwang Keum-dan, a stockmarket analyst at Samsung Securities.

always been there. It is like telling in-vestors to quit the Japanese market be-cause it has earthquakes. War is wantedneither by the North nor the South,” onefund manager at a foreign investmentmanagement house said.

FURIOUS RHETORICBoth sides have stepped up their

rhetoric over the Cheonan incident, oneof their deadliest since the 1950-53Korean War.

The North charged South Korea’sgovernment with fabricating the issue, partly to help the ruling party in nextweek’s local elections — important tocement President Lee’s power in thesecond half of his single five-year term.

The incident appears to have donenothing to dent Lee’s popularity, whichone recent opinion poll shows runningat well over 40 percent, unusually highfor recent South Korean presidents half-way through their term.

A strong showing for Lee’s party inthe June 2 local election, which manyexpect, will give him greater authorityto push aside a fragmented oppositionin parliament and continue with sweep-ing pro-business reforms.

His rule has also seen relations withthe North turn increasingly chilly as heturned his back on a decade of gener-ous aid to the North by his predeces-sors which had failed to end its attemptsto build nuclear weapons.

This matter was confirmed by Governorof Bali in his speech after signing the agreementand cooperation script (MoU) in culture and tour-ism between Bali Provincial Government andSouth Sulawesi Province in Wiswa Sabha Hallrecently. “Bali is indeed becoming the locomo-tive, but the coach should also run smoothly, oth-erwise, it would be difficult for the locomotive topull,” Pastika joked.

Mangku Pastika warmly welcomed the co-operation in culture and tourism because his partywould like to give an impact to the region having atourist attraction in order it could manage its desti-nation properly. “I know South Sulawesi has suchgreat potential to be developed and restructured tobecome a tourist attraction. At the end, the proceed-ings could make the society prosperous,” he said.

It was said, to manage the tourism sector itcould not be relied on tourist attraction owned, butthe support and participation of citizens was nec-

With the subak system inheritedfrom some a thousand years ago, they cul-tivate their land with regular irrigation. The system can survive because it adoptsmodern techniques, too. Both go hand inhand in keeping with the modernization.Mechanization and agricultural technol-ogy are in one side, while ancient tradi-tion in another side. It was Mpu Kuturanwho introduced the ritual guidance forsubak through his famous palm-leaf manu-script Darmaning Pemaculan featuring thepreparation of seedlings up to storing thepost-harvest husked rice in granary.

Other than observing their dailyworks, visitors can also see their ‘struggle’against disturbing birds. When they arepreparing some seedlings, some spotteddoves will steal the sprouts. Farmers areforced to cover the newly seedlings byalang-alang grass until they reach somefive to six days old. Another enemy is theslow white heron along with its friend.Though such long-legged birds do not eatthe sprouts but they disturb enough be-cause usually walk around haphazardly inthe seedling area where their prey likesmall frogs or grasshoppers go. to suck the young milky content of the rice, moreover if it belongs to local variety likesticky rice. The latter is more delicious. Ifthis attack is neglected or gets less atten-tion within few days the entire paddy maybe empty. Therefore, farmers attempt todismiss them by generating various sounds. Some of them can be carried out by mak-ing split bamboo log, propeller or even in-stall some scarecrows at every corner. Ofcourse, it will be accompanied by installa-tion of some ropes to move them. To makeeasier in overseeing the birds, farmer willeven build temporary high hut. But, a littlenegligence of farmer will be taken advan-tage by those birds.

If you are lucky enough, your birdwatching may encounter some manyarbirds or golden weaver belonging to muniafamily. Uniquely, this bird builds a hang-ing nest on trees, bamboo higher grass orcoconut made from plaited grasses. More-over, this bird can also make a basinet fortheir baby. When they grow older, they willbe ready to sway on the stalk of rice.

Some other interesting birds to seein the rice field are Javan kingfisher (Ba-linese: tenggek) with its blue feather andred or white beek, white breasted waterhen (krekuwak) usually walk and slip intothe spaces between paddy plants.

In essence, local farmers do nothave a habit to kill the annoying birds. They just dismiss them by eco-friendlymethods such as by generating soundsmanually, by wind or even water. If theattack is rampant and considered stubborn, they will hold ngelepeh ceremony by of-fering sacrifice at Bedugul Temple. Hope-fully, by offering some oblation gods mas-tering the birds could control their sub-jects. Last but not least, have a nice birdwatching while looking closer at farmer’sactivity in the rice field. Agence France-Presse

WASHINGTON - After monthsof fragile economic growth, fears aremounting that the global recoverycould be derailed by a debt crisis thatbegan in one small corner of Europe.

At first investors voiced onlymild concern about events in Ath-ens. News that Greece had fiddleddeficit figures did little except in-crease the country’s cost of borrow-ing and raise eyebrows at the Euro-pean Union’s Brussels headquarters.

But as world stock markets werepummeled in recent weeks and theeuro fell sharply against the dollar, that concern has given way toscarcely concealed panic.

Respected commentators are be-ginning to echo the twitterverse’sshrill warnings that a once obscuredebt problem could prompt anotherGreat Recession.

If a one-trillion-dollar (750-bil-lion-euro) EU rescue package failsto calm markets, “US GDP growthcould be reduced by half to one per-cent over the next couple of years,”Deutsche Bank analysts warned cli-ents.

“If the rescue program fails alto-gether, we are looking at a poten-tially much more negative picture, with the distinct possibility of adouble-dip recession.”

Greece, with debt of nearly 300billion euros (372 billion dollars),agreed this month to spending cutsand higher taxes in exchange for a110-billion-euro bailout packagefrom the European Union and theInternational Monetary Fund.

Still, with another crisis looming,

The state-run Korea Develop-ment Institute said in a report seenTuesday that the North had a 333million dollar trade surplus with itsneighbour last year.

Seoul on Monday bannedmost cross-border trade after an in-ternational investigation found thata North Korean submarine had tor-pedoed a South Korean warship onMarch 26, killing 46 sailors.

“The sanctions are expectedto bring significant pain to theNorth Korean government,” insti-tute researcher Lee Seok said in thereport.

The South also banned theNorth’s merchant ships from usingits sea lanes, meaning they face big-ger fuel bills from taking longerroutes.

It excluded a jointly run in-dustrial estate at Kaesong, justnorth of the border, from the tradeban.

The institute said the Northhad consistently achieved a surplusin purely commercial trade with theSouth, excluding aid and govern-ment-led economic cooperationprojects. The surplus amounted to333 million dollars in 2009. Thecommunist state’s exports weremainly farm products or seafood.

The North earned another 40million dollars from workers’wages at Kaesong last year, whichare unaffected at present.

The government-funded Ko-rea Institute for National Unifica-tion separately estimated theNorth’s likely annual trade lossesat more than 250 million dollars. This includes an extra one milliondollars in extra fuel costs for ships,it said in a report published byDong-A Ilbo newspaper.

But analysts cautioned thatSeoul’s trade cut-off could push itsneighbour further into the arms ofChina, which is already the North’smain trade partner and energy sup-

SEOUL - South Korea’s ban on most trade with North Ko-rea will cost the impoverished communist state hundreds ofmillions of dollars a year, according to figures from a Seoulresearch group.

plier. “The North will strengthen its

economic cooperation further withChina to make up for a loss in tradewith the South,” Kim Yong-Hyunof Seoul’s Dongguk University toldAFP. “The South’s economic lever-age is weakening and actually onthe brink of collapse.”

Dong Yong-Seung ofSamsung Economic Research Insti-tute in Seoul agreed that the South’smove could deepen the North’s eco-nomic dependence on China. But hesaid it could also create a shortageof hard currency in the North, caus-ing it problems in settling businessdeals with China.

The trade ban caused jittersamong South Koreans trading withthe North, including those atKaesong, where 42,000 North Ko-reans work at 110 South Korean-funded plants.

Even though the estate wasexcluded from the ban, factoryowners are suffering from chilledrelations.

“That (ban) was like slappinga death penalty on us,” Park Yong-Man, owner of a garment factoryin Kaesong, told Yonhap newsagency. “Orders have completelydried up.”

Lee Kwan-ho, an official atSeopyong Energy, which importssmokeless coal from North Korea, said his company could not surviveif the deterioration in relations con-tinued.

Choi Yong-gwan, head of anassociation of South Korean busi-nessmen that supports inter-Koreantrade, said Seoul was abandoningthe opportunity to open up the re-clusive North.

“North Koreans now under-stand the taste of money,” Choisaid. “Abandoning economic coop-eration is equal to withdrawing ourmost effective means of prying thecountry open.”

Fears grow that banks couldsend euro crisis global

experts point out that the downturn’ssymptoms look eerily similar to thelast one, with nods at the financialsystem, and banks in particular.

Daniel Tarullo, a member of theFederal Reserve’s board, recentlysuggested a repeat of the 2008 cri-sis that saw the near collapse of theUS financial sector was “not out ofthe question.”

“One avenue through which fi-nancial turmoil in Europe might af-fect the US economy is by weaken-ing the asset quality and capital po-sitions of US financial institutions,”Tarullo told Congress last week.

Banks, he said, were goingthrough spasms that “brought backmemories of developments duringthe recent global financial crisis.”

Then, faced with doubts aboutthe health of competitors’ balancesheets, banks began closing downcredit lines, sparking a domino ef-fect throughout the financial system.

The fear is that banks willagain stop trusting each other, ac-cording to Uri Dadush, a former di-rector of international trade at theWorld Bank who is now with theCarnegie Endowment.

“Even though US bank expo-sure is relatively limited... the bank-ing systems in Europe and theUnited States are so interconnected, and European banks have a lot of ex-posure,” he said.

The top ten US banks are esti-mated to hold around 60 billion dol-lars in debt from “peripheral” Euro-pean nations, around a tenth of theirprincipal capital.

Their banking counterpartsacross the Atlantic, particularly in

France and Germany have much moresignificant exposure.

The gap between inter-bank bor-rowing costs in Europe and the UnitedStates has exploded in recent months, which analysts say is a sign of grow-ing concern.

“Broader recovery concerns andpotentially elevated counterpartycredit risk could be the main drivers,”said Geoffrey Yu of UBS.

“Either way, investor concernshave expanded from beyond theeurozone into a broader arena.”

As if to underline the concern, stock markets around the world wereweighed down Monday by news thatthe Spanish government was forced tobailout CajaSur, a local savings bank.

Trade may also be hit. As the euro was pummeled by

investors, US and Asian exports havebecome more costly for Europeans, who many fear will be able to buy lessas the recovery slows.

Around a quarter of US manu-facturing exports go to Europe. Thesector employs an estimated 11.6 mil-lion Americans.

Ironically, the single Europeancurrency’s fall in value may makeEurope more competitive, boost ex-ports and offer the continent an exitfrom the crisis.

“The euro devaluation canhelp,” said Dadush, “a 20 percent de-valuation of the euro is a big deal, buteveryone has to realize that the ben-efits of the devaluation are going tobe spread quite unevenly.”

Regardless, a crisis that beganwith dodgy accounting now looks awhole lot more serious.

Wakefield was the first researcher to publish a peer-reviewed studysuggesting a connection between autism and the vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella. Legions of parents abandoned the vaccine, lead-ing to a resurgence of measles in Western countries where it hadbeen mostly stamped out. There are outbreaks across Europe everyyear and sporadic outbreaks in the U.S. “That is Andrew Wakefield’slegacy,” said Paul Offit, chief of infectious diseases at the Children’sHospital of Philadelphia. “The hospitalizations and deaths of chil-dren from measles who could have easily avoided the disease.”

Wakefield’s discredited theories had a tremendous impact in theU.S., Offit said, adding: “He gave heft to the notion that vaccines ingeneral cause autism.” In Britain, Wakefield’s research led to a hugedecline in the number of children receiving the MMR vaccine: from95 percent in 1995 — enough to prevent measles outbreaks — to 50percent in parts of London in the early 2000s. Rates have begun torecover, though not enough to prevent outbreaks. In 2006, a 13-year-old boy became the first person to die from measles in Britain in 14years.

“The false suggestion of a link between autism and the MMRvaccine has done untold damage to the UK vaccination program,”said Terence Stephenson, president of the Royal College of Paediat-rics and Child Health. “Overwhelming scientific evidence shows that

NEW YORK – Consumers who opt for organic foodsoften believe they are improving their health, but thereis currently no strong evidence that organics bring nu-trition-related health benefits, a new research reviewfinds. A “disappointingly small” number of well-de-signed studies have looked at whether organic foodsmay have health benefits beyond their conventionalcounterparts’, according to the review, by researcherswith the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Healthin the UK. Moreover, they found, what studies havebeen done have largely focused on short-term effectsof organic eating — mainly antioxidant activity in thebody — rather than longer-term health outcomes. Andmost of the antioxidant studies failed to find differencesbetween organic and conventional diets.

The review, published in the American Journal ofClinical Nutrition, adds to findings reported last yearby the same research team. In that study, the research-ers combed through 162 articles published in the scien-tific literature over the last 50 years, and found no evi-dence that organic and conventional foods differ sig-nificantly in their nutrient content. For the current re-view, the researchers were able to find only 12 pub-lished studies that met their criteria for evaluating thehealth effects of organic foods. “A surprising and im-portant finding of this review is the extremely limitednature of the evidence base on this subject, both in termsof the number and quality of studies,” write Dr. Alan D.Dangour and his colleagues.

Research in the area does appear to be increasing,Dangour’s team notes; 4 of the 12 studies they reviewedwere published in 2008 or 2009. But in the future, theresearchers add, studies — both in humans and ani-mals — need to be better-designed. Of the 12 studiesthe researchers identified, 6 were short-term clinicaltrials that looked at whether specific organic foodschanged markers of antioxidant activity in participants’

WASHINGTON – New technol-ogy developed by US researchersshould shed light on whether dino-saurs were cold-blooded or warm-blooded animals, a study releasedMonday said. California Institute ofTechnology (Caltech) researchersunveiled what they said was the firstmethod for direct measurement of thebody temperatures of large extinctvertebrates using analyses of isotopesin animals’ bones, teeth, and egg-shells. The findings were publishedin the early edition of the Proceed-ings of the National Academy of Sci-ences (PNAS).

“This is not quite like going backin time and sticking a thermometerup a creature’s back end,” said re-searcher John Eiler, a geochemistryprofessor Caltech. “But it’s close.” Tostudy changes in temperature regu-lation in extinct animals requiresknowing what their body tempera-tures once were. The team’s methodlooks at the concentrations of two rareisotopes — carbon-13 and oxygen-18. “Heavy isotopes like to bond, orclump together, and this clumpingeffect is dependent on temperature,”said lead author Robert Eagle, aCaltech postdoctoral scholar. “Atvery hot temperatures, you get a more

LONDON – The doctor whose research linking autism andthe vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella influenced millionsof parents to refuse the shot for their children was banned Mon-day from practicing medicine in his native Britain. it is safe.” On Monday, Britain’s General Medical Council, whichlicenses and oversees doctors, found Wakefield guilty of serious pro-fessional misconduct and stripped him of the right to practice medi-cine in the U.K. Wakefield said he plans to appeal the ruling, whichtakes effect within 28 days. The council was acting on a finding inJanuary that Wakefield and two other doctors showed a “callous dis-regard” for the children in their study, published in 1998 in the medi-cal journal Lancet. The medical body said Wakefield took bloodsamples from children at his son’s birthday party, paying them 5pounds (about $7.20) each and later joked about the incident.

The study has since been widely rejected. From 1998-2004, studiesin journals including the Lancet, the New England Journal of Medi-cine, Pediatrics and BMJ published papers showing no link betweenautism and the measles vaccine. Wakefield moved to the U.S. in 2004and set up an autism research center in Austin, Texas, where he gaineda wide following despite being unlicensed as a doctor there and facingskepticism from the medical community. He quit earlier this year. Offitsaid he doubted Britain’s decision to strip the 53-year-old Wakefieldof his medical license would convince many parents that vaccines aresafe. “He’s become almost like a Christ-like figure and it doesn’t mat-ter that science has proven him wrong,” Offit said. “He is a hero forparents who think no one else is listening to them.”

Wakefield told The Associated Press Monday’s decision was asad day for British medicine. “None of this alters the fact that vac-cines can cause autism,” he said. “These parents are not going away;the children are not going to go away and I most certainly am notgoing away,” he said on NBC’s “Today Show.” Wakefield claimedthe U.S. government has been settling cases of vaccine-induced au-tism since 1991. However, two rulings by a special branch of theU.S. Court of Federal Claims in March and last year found no linkbetween vaccines and autism. More than 5,500 claims have beenfiled by families seeking compensation for children they claim werehurt by the vaccine.

After proving their method on liv-ing elephants and sharks, the teamturned to the extinct. They examineda 12-million-year-old fossil from arelative of the rhinoceros, as well asfrom a cold-blooded member of thealligator family tree. “We found wecould measure the expected bodytemperature of the rhino-like mam-mal, and could see a temperature dif-ference between that and the alliga-tor relative, of about six degrees cen-tigrade,” Eagle explained. “When welook at tooth enamel, for instance, what we get is a record of the headtemperature of the animal when thetooth grew,” Eiler said. But “if youwant to know what his big-toe tem-perature was two years later, too bad.”

With an accuratepaleothermometer working, the re-searchers want to look further back atbody temperatures of less-known ver-tebrates. “Before mammals and birds,”Eagle said, “we have no good ideawhat physiology these ancient crea-tures had.” Now it is the dinosaurs’ turnto get a closer temperature look.“We’re looking at eggshells and teethto see whether the most conspicuousdinosaur species were warm- or cold-blooded,” Eiler explained.

No evidence organic foods benefit health: studyblood. Those trials showed no strong evidence that or-ganic eating boosted antioxidant activity, but the stud-ies were also very limited in scope: they were small —with the largest including 43 men — and lasted no longerthan a few weeks. Out of the other 6 studies, one foundan association between organic foods and a lower riskof the allergic skin condition eczema among nearly2,800 Dutch children age 2 or younger.

In that study, parents were surveyed several timesabout their children’s diet and any episodes of eczemaover the first two years of life. Researchers found thatchildren who consumed strictly organic dairy productsshowed a lower risk of eczema than those consumedconventional dairy foods. However, the study had sev-eral key limitations, including its reliance on parents’reports of eczema. And the basic design of the studydoes not allow for any conclusions about whetherchildren’s consumption of organic dairy was the reasonfor the lower eczema risk. While questions remain as towhether organic foods have any extra nutritional value, people buy organic for a number of other reasons aswell.

BOSTON – Put away the brooms. Hold off on those “Beat L.A!” chants. The Boston Celticsstill have some work to do before they can play for their second NBA title in three years. DwightHoward had 32 points and 16 rebounds, and Jameer Nelson made back-to-back 3-pointers inovertime to lead the Orlando Magic to a 96-92 victory over Boston on Monday night to avoid afour-game sweep in the Eastern Conference finals.

Paul Pierce had 32 points and 11 re-bounds, and Kevin Garnett had 14points and 12 boards for Boston. RayAllen hit consecutive 3-pointers inovertime, but Pierce missed two triesin the final minute as the Celtics failedto complete the sweep.

“They don’t want to leave. We’regoing to have to throw them out,” saidCeltics forward Glen “Big Baby”Davis. “It’s just like somebody rent-ing a house.” Nelson finished with 23points and nine assists for the defend-ing Eastern Conference champions, who led by 10 in the second quarterand were up 85-78 with 2:24 left inregulation before Boston scored eightof the next nine points to force over-time at 86-all. Neither team scored forthe first 2:18 of the period beforeNelson hit a 3-pointer and then addedanother 43 seconds later. Allen madea 3-pointer and, after Howard dunkedand drew a foul — but missed a freethrow — Allen hit another 3 to makeit 94-92.

Howard followed up Nelson’smiss with 53 seconds left to make it

96-92, then Garnett sailed a pass overPierce’s head and into the crowd.Pierce missed a pair of 3-point attemptsin the closing seconds. “There were acouple of plays down the stretch of-fensively that we botched, plain andsimple. We’re kicking ourselves. Wehad a great opportunity,” Allen said.“There’s no need to panic. We like theposition we’re in. But it’s a lesson: Wehave to take care of the small thingsand we’ll get to where we want to be.”

Orlando’s revival came just in timeto avoid a Celtics walkover that hadfans in the new Boston Garden chant-ing “Beat L.A!” early in the secondhalf of Saturday night’s 23-point Bos-ton victory. The Lakers lead the Suns2-1 in the Western Conference finals, with Game 4 on Tuesday night inPhoenix. But there was no more chant-ing about the Lakers on Monday night.“I know they (the Celtics players)heard it. They had no choice but to hearit,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. “Idon’t know if they believed it. Wedidn’t play well, I know that. I hopethat wasn’t the reason.”

WEMBLEY, England – England’s players left coach Fabio Capello frustrated at their lack ofaggression in an unconvincing 3-1 victory over Mexico on Monday. While defenders Ledley Kingand Glen Johnson scored and Peter Crouch had a contentious goal, problems on defense made itan uncomfortable night for England at Wembley Stadium. England, which opens its World Cupcampaign against the United States on June 12, relied on goalkeeper Robert Green and a tacticalchange at halftime to beat its fellow World Cup qualifier.

goalkeeper Oscar Perez touchedWayne Rooney’s header onto thecrossbar.

England, though, was beingoutplayed, with Green twice deny-ing Mexico’s Arsenal forwardCarlos Vela, while Carlos Salcidohit the goal post. Guillermo Francoclaimed a goal for the visitors sec-onds before halftime when left backLeighton Baines cleared RafaelMarquez’s header at the far poststraight to the forward, who scoredfrom close range. “Mexico are tech-nically very good — they are fasterthan us and it was not easy gettingthe ball back,” Capello said. “Not

all the teams we play against willbe like this, but it is very importantto press the ball and win it backquickly.”

Capello made several changesat halftime with Green, captain RioFerdinand, who partnered King incentral defense, and Crouch re-placed by Manchester City goal-keeper Joe Hart, Liverpool de-fender Jamie Carragher andTottenham forward Jermain Defoe.James Milner, who had been inef-fective in central midfield withMichael Carrick, was shifted out tothe left, with Gerrard moving intothe middle. “We need to be able to

adapt to different formations dur-ing a game and also for different op-position,” Gerrard said. And twominutes into the second half,

Johnson restored England’s two-goal cushion with a curling shotfrom 20 yards and the home sidelooked more comfortable.

Mourinho’s time at Inter is over, says Morattiwhether he thought Mourinho’s workwas finished at Inter. “His attitude wasthat of somebody who believes he isgoing to Real Madrid,” added Moratti, who said it had been an interesting dis-cussion.

Mourinho’s agent held talks withReal Madrid bosses in the Spanish capi-tal on Monday over the Portuguesecoach’s possible move to the club fromInter Milan. The agent, Jorge Mendes, who also represents Real’s Portuguesestriker Cristiano Ronaldo, held talks forabout 90 minutes with theclub’s director generalJorge Valdano and sport-ing director MiguelPardeza. Spanish sportsdailies AS and Marca, re-ported on Sunday thatMourinho will sign a four-year deal with RealMadrid worth 10 millioneuros (12.5 million dol-lars) a year.

The stumbling block to the deal re-mains the talks with Inter Milan, whoare demanding 16 million euros to lethim leave the Italian side, they said. Hiscurrent contract with Inter Milan wasdue to expire in 2012 but has on sev-eral occasions expressed his dislike forItalian football. Mourinho told Portu-guese television station TVI on Sun-day that the deal is almost a certaintybut he wants to meet with Real offi-cials first to get a clear understandingof what his role at the club would be.

“Things are practically ironed out. Iwant to meet the people, feel the pulse, know exactly what they want from meand the conditions, not the structures, because these I already know, to avoidany doubts when I begin my work,” hesaid.

Mourinho, who won the PremierLeague with Chelsea after leavingPorto, also had a warning for Real’ssquad - which is loaded with stars suchas Kaka and Gonzalo Higuain, in addi-tion to Ronaldo. “The stars now are

Inter, they are the European champi-ons. My message to the players of Real,if I come to coach them, is that they arenot stars, the star is not the coach, thestar is the team,” he said. “If they allaccept this like when I was at Porto,Chelsea or Inter, the victories willcome.” Mourinho, who has not lost ahome match for the past seven seasons, follows Ernst Happel and OttmarHitzfeld as a member of the select bandof coaches to have won the Champi-ons League with two different clubs.
