Bangli Regency and soon would pri-oritize the development of integratedfarming patterns in Bangli Regency.Provincial Government of Bali, ac-cording to Head of Publications andDocumentation Bureau, I KetutTeneng, would allocate a fund worthIDR 8 billion to social assistance inagriculture specifically directed to thedevelopment of 40 farmer groupunions (Gapoktan) in 2010.

The fund sourced from the 2010Bali Regional Budget focused on thepatterns of integrated agricultural de-velopment as the continuation of thesame program in the previous year.Similar activities in 2009 were directedto the development of ten units offarmer group union with the support-ing fund of IDR 2.3 billion. The pat-tern of agricultural development wasintegrally tilled by technical agencies, with priority to villages that over 35percent of their residents remained to

belong to poor families.Ketut Teneng explained the inte-

grated agricultural development wasinitiated by Governor of Bali, MadeMangku Pastika, as an effort to in-crease farmers’ income and welfare,at least twice in 2013. Ten units of pi-lot projects for integrated farming pat-tern implemented in 2009 was ex-pected to be emulated by farmer groupunion development becoming the tar-get in 2010.

Meanwhile, he hoped with suchpilot project, similar activities carriedout in this year would not face anyobstacles and difficulties. “Prior todeveloping the integrated farming pat-terns, farmers should first have a closerlook at the activities implemented byother farmers in developing such in-tegrated pattern, both related to live-stock, agricultural, fishery and inter-cropping sector,” said Ketut Teneng.(kmb)

TOKYO - A New Zealand anti-whaling activist on trial in Japandenied Monday a charge of assault, saying that rancid butter stinkbombs he threw at harpoon ships were no more acidic than orangejuice.

Peter Bethune, of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, alsotearfully recounted the day the campaigners’ speedboat collided withthe whaling fleet’s security ship the Shonan Maru II during con-frontations in Antarctic waters.

Bethune, 45, is on trial for allegedly causing chemical burns tothe face of a whaler and for several charges relating to his boardingof the Shonan Maru II weeks after the futuristic boat the Ady Gilsank following the collision.

Prosecutors say a rancid butter, or butyric acid, stink bomb causedchemical burns to the face of a 24-year-old Japanese crew memberduring a February 11 clash and also hurt the eyes of several otherwhalers.

Bethune, who has admitted to four charges but not assault, saidhe threw the bottle thinking it “very unlikely” to hit crew members, and that the butyric acid has the same level of acidity as orangejuice.

“It’s very smelly, but it’s OK if it falls in the water. It’s organicand biodegradable and won’t harm anyone,” he said.

Bethune faces up to 15 years jail if convicted on the assault andother charges.

He was detained by whalers in February after he climbed aboardthe Shonan Maru II, the security ship of the Japanese whaling fleet, during its annual cull of the giant sea mammals.

He wanted to make a citizen’s arrest of the captain and also billhim for the 300-million-dollar kevlar trimaran which he helped buildand which sank after what Bethune described as a harrowing colli-sion.

“I thought my crew was going to die,” he said. “Five people gotbruises and one broke a rib. Ady Gil has been my life. I live withthis vision of being run over. This broke my heart.”

His trial throws a spotlight on Japanese whaling, which the is-land-nation defends as part of its culture and carries out under aloophole to an international moratorium that allows lethal “scien-tific research”.

The militant Sea Shepherd group pursued and harassed Japanesewhalers in Antarctic waters for months in the 2009-2010 season, acampaign which both sides say reduced the Japanese cull by severalhundred whales.

The activist, who joined the group in July 2009, also told thecourt that he would likely not return to the Antarctic. He has toldJapanese media he needed to earn money to support his family afterhis unpaid activism.

KABUL - NATO air strikes on Mondaytargeted the Taliban in eastern Afghanistan inan attempt to dislodge the militia from a dis-trict they captured from government forces lastweek, the alliance said.

The militants seized the district of BargiMatal in the rugged Nuristan province on Sat-urday, driving out Afghan security forces af-ter days of fierce fighting.

On Monday, NATO jets bombed thetroubled region in what the alliance’s Interna-tional Security Assistance Force (ISAF) saidwas an operation in support of its Afghancounterparts.

“ISAF supported Afghan national securityforce operations in Nuristan province by de-livering precision-guided air strikes on knowninsurgent locations near Bargi Matal earlyMonday,” it said in a statement.

The air strikes were requested by Afghancommanders, it added.

An ISAF spokesman told AFP the raids hadtargeted “the bad guys in Bargi Matal”.

Interior ministry spokesman ZemaraiBashary said the raids were called in by Af-ghan troops ahead of an operation to recap-ture the district.

“We’re going to launch an operation verysoon to retake the district. The air strikes werein support of our operations and were calledin preparation for ground operations,” he said.

The Taliban are waging an insurgency tooverthrow the US-backed government ofPresident Hamid Karzai which is backed by130,000 international troops.

The insurgency has gained strength in re-cent years as the rebels have spread their in-fluence beyond their traditional stronghold inthe country’s south. There was no immediate claim ofresponsibility by the PKK, an out-lawed separatist group whose leaderAbdullah Ocalan decided to aban-don efforts to seek dialogue with theTurkish government.

Five members of Turkey’s secu-rity forces were killed on Saturdayin a string of attacks that gave astrong sign that Kurdish peace ef-forts are unravelling.

Army chief General IlkerBasbug cut short a visit to Egyptafter the rocket attack and a deadlyIsraeli operation on an aid convoyheaded to the Gaza Strip, which in-cluded several Turkish vessels.

Ocalan was jailed for life in 1999but has retained his influence overthe PKK from his prison cell onImrali island, often issuing guide-lines to rebels in statements releasedthrough his lawyers.

His calls for dialogue have beenrejected by the government, whichinsists the PKK either lay down its

arms or face the army, and he wasquoted in a party mouthpiece overthe weekend as having given up hispursuit of dialogue.

“Keeping up this process is nolonger meaningful and useful. I amquitting after May 31 since I couldnot find an interlocutor,” Ocalan wasquoted by the Ozgur Politika news-paper as telling his lawyers during arecent prison visit.

Ocalan however said his decisiondid not amount to a call for the PKKto intensify its armed campaign.

“This should not be misunder-stood. This is not a call for a war,”he said, according to Saturday’sOzgur Politika.

Following a usual winter lull, violence has broken out anew in the

southeast. The melting of wintersnow has allowed the rebels tomove out from their mountain hide-outs in Turkey and neighbouringIraq.

The PKK, listed as a terroristgroup by Turkey and much of theinternational community, took uparms in 1984, sparking a conflictthat has claimed some 45,000 lives.

Last year, Prime Minister RecepTayyip Erdogan’s government an-nounced it would expand Kurdishfreedoms in a bid to peacefully endthe conflict.

The initiative however has fal-tered, amid bitterness over thegovernment’s decision to ban themain Kurdish party and public out-rage at bloody PKK attacks.

Tropical Storm Agatha alsoforced tens of thousands of peopleto flee their homes as it whippedheavy rains across Guatemala, ElSalvador, Honduras and Mexico.

“The storm has caused 82deaths,” Guatemalan PresidentAlvaro Colom told reporters.Among the dead were four childrenin a house that was swept away in alandslide, officials said.

In neighboring El Salvador, floods and landslides accounted fornine deaths, authorities there said.

And in Honduras, emergencymanagement officials reported atleast 10 storm-related deaths asAgatha lashed the country, forcingthe government to put five of theterritory’s 18 departments under astate of emergency. As many as2,289 people were forced to leavetheir homes.

Agatha slammed into Guate-mala overnight with 65-kilometer(40-mile) per hour winds and wassoon downgraded to a tropical de-pression as it dissipated over higherground, but the damage caused byheavy rains and high windsprompted the government in El Sal-vador to declare a state of emer-

state of emergency since Saturday, while Honduras declared a nation-wide state of emergency Sundayand established a crisis managementcommittee to address heavy flood-ing and other effects from the storm.

Guatemalan President Colomsaid flash floods and mudslidesforced nearly 112,000 people to fleetheir homes. He said schools wouldremain closed until next week.

The worst storm-related disas-ter in Guatemala occurred in a vil-lage in Solola department where alandslide swept away 25 homes kill-ing 15 people, with another 10 miss-ing, according to San AntonioPalopo Mayor Andres Cumes.

To prevent an outbreak of dis-ease, the bodies will be buried atonce, he told reporters.

Colombia and the UnitedStates offered to send aircraft toferry aid or help with evacuationsof storm-hit areas, and Colom saidsix US military aircraft were enroute from a base in Honduras.

Mexican President FelipeCalderon, at Colom’s behest, hasoffered the airport in the border city

of Tapachula for emergency flightsin and out of Guatemala, Calderon’soffice said.

Guatemala City’s La AuroraInternational Airport has beenclosed since Friday after beingshowered by volcanic ash from theeruption of the Pacaya volcano twodays earlier. Two people were killedand three missing after the eruptionon Wednesday.

Vulcanologists atGuatemala’s national seismologicalinstitute said activity in the volcanowas within a normal range, but itsdirector Freddy Sanchez said “it’svery possible there could be moreviolent explosions in the comingdays.”

Colom said that even thoughthe storm had eased, authorities re-mained on an emergency footing, adding that there were dozens oftowns and villages that were stillinaccessible because of roads sev-ered by landslides.

El Salvador’s PresidentMauricio Funes put his country un-der a state of emergency, saying thateven though the storm was weak-ening, the risk of mudslides andflash floods “remains very high.”

Agence France-PresseSYDNEY - A giant plume of

volcanic ash over the South Pacificprompted warnings to tourists andairlines Monday but caused onlyminor disruption to flights com-pared with recent chaos in Europe.

The cloud billowing fromVanuatu’s Mount Yasur volcanorose about 6,000 feet (1,800 metres)high and was spread over about 340square kilometres (130 squaremiles), affecting flights inneighbouring New Caledonia.

Tourists have been bannedfrom scenic Mount Yasur, whichhas been exploding and spitting lavaand burning rocks, while officialsare assessing whether to evacuatesome 6,000 nearby villagers.

Meanwhile, New Zealand of-ficials warned airlines to avoid theash — which can seize up jet en-gines by being churned into glass— echoing the Iceland eruptionwhich caused mass disruption inEurope including a week-long shut-down.

“The Mount Yasur volcanoon Tanna island has been very ac-tive the last three days and the erup-tion is ongoing,” said TristanOakley, an aviation forecaster withNew Zealand’s Meteorological Ser-

“Last week we recorded avery high activity for the volcanowith hot lava, hot rocks falling fromthe volcano,” he told AFP fromMount Tasur’s surrounding islandof Tanna.

“There are 6,000 people in thevillages around the volcano, we’renot moving them out yet. All tour-ists and tourist operators have beenasked to not access the volcano. Theaccess is restricted.”

The plume has disrupted ahandful of domestic flights operatedby New Caledonia’s AirCal, al-though disruption remains tinycompared with the havoc seen inEurope.

Air Vanuatu local supervisorDavid Dick said flights were stillrunning between the South Pacificcountry’s capital, Port Vila, andTanna island, while tourism offi-cials also said the industry was un-affected.

Resort-owners said tourists

were still driving out to see the vol-cano but had to keep their distance, while the trucks carrying them re-turned covered with ash.

“They can get to the volcano, but are restricted and don’t haveaccess to where we usually takethem,” said Lina Tuprick, whoworks at Tanna Evergreen Bunga-lows.

“There are explosions on thevolcano. It’s the first time in twoyears it’s been so active.”

Australia also issued a traveladvisory saying visitors were“strictly prohibited” from visitingthe volcano.

Vanuatu was rocked by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake on Friday, prompting a brief tsunami warning. The archipelago, which lies be-tween Australia and Fiji and northof New Zealand, was hit by threemajor quakes in October.

Iceland’s ash cloud has beenseverely disrupting European airtravel since April, widely affectingairports and closing down airspacein the continent’s north for a week.

Last week, eruptions in Gua-temala and Ecuador killed twopeople, forced thousands to flee andshut down two airports, smotheringrunways in ash.

“Israel will have to endure the con-sequences of this behavior” a TurkishForeign Ministry statement said.

Mark Regev, a spokesman for Is-raeli Prime Minister BenjaminNetanyahu, said Israel had not wanted aviolent confrontation.

“We made repeated offers that theyshould bring the boats to the port ofAshdod and from there we guaranteedthat all humanitarian cargo would betransferred to the people of Gaza,” he said.

Israel has said it was determined tomaintain its blockade of the Gaza Strip, aterritory of 1.5 million people that is con-trolled by Hamas Islamists opposed toU.S.-mediated Israeli-Palestinian peacetalks. Israel’s Western allies have beencritical of the embargo on the impover-ished enclave, which the Jewish state saysis aimed at preventing arms supplies fromreaching Hamas by sea.

It has previously halted such activ-ist ships, although some others havereached the Gaza Strip before.

Palestinian President MahmoudAbbas, whose Fatah faction lost controlof the Gaza Strip in fighting with Hamasin 2007, declared three days of mourning

“How could the Israeli military at-tack civilians like this?” asked GretaBerlin, a spokeswoman for the Free GazaMovement that organized the convoy.“Do they think that because they can at-tack Palestinians indiscriminately theycan attack anyone? The flotilla was or-ganized, among others, by a Turkish hu-man rights organization. Turkey hadurged Israel to allow it safe passage andsaid the 10,000 tonnes of aid the convoywas carrying was humanitarian.

Turkey, long Israel’s best Muslimally in a hostile Middle East, was highlycritical of Israel’s attack on Gaza 18months ago, in which 1,400 Palestinianswere killed. Relations between the twostates are now distinctly chilly and blood-shed at sea will do nothing to improvethem. The European Union called foran enquiry into the deaths aboard the aidships and demanded Israel allow the freeflow of humanitarian aid to the GazaStrip.

Responding to that question, the VicePresident asked the Minister of PublicWorks Joko Krimanto to explain the prob-lem to the residents. According to Joko, thereservoir project in Titab will certainly berealized soon. Until now, the central gov-ernment in fiscal year 2010 has already is-sued a partial budget for the project. But theobstacles encountered are mostly the prob-lems of land acquisition by local govern-ments. “I hope the land acquisition can bedone this year, 2010, so that this project canbe completed in fiscal year 2012,” said Joko.

On that occasion Prebekel Sudaji I GedeRahayudi also hold up VP Budiono to theproblem of clean water availability. Accord-ing to Rahayudi, so far local people are usesto meet their needs out of mountain water.

During a visit to Tokyo where hemet Japanese counterpart YukioHatoyama, Wen said the globaleconomy is recovering but remainsfragile and faces various risks that re-quire international cooperation.

“Some people argue that the glo-bal economy has already recovered andthat we can now take stimulus exitmeasures but I think that judgment istoo early,” Wen said in a speech to busi-ness leaders in Tokyo.

“We need to prepare for (future)difficulty. The debt crisis in some Eu-ropean countries may impede Europe’seconomic recovery and bring changeto European markets,” he said.

“China will make sure it main-tains a sense of crisis,” he added.

Exporting nations such as Chinahave eyed the eurozone cautiously amidfears that tough austerity measures be-ing introduced to tackle fiscal debt couldweigh on growth in the region and erodedemand for their goods.

Wen added that “individualcountries need to cooperate and increasetheir support to the economy throughpolicy. There is no room for slacking.”

China’s exports in April were up30.5 percent from the same month ayear earlier, according to state media,as shipments help drive economicgrowth that registered a blistering rateof 11.9 percent in the first quarter.

However, rampant inflation and

soaring property prices at home havefuelled fears the world’s third biggesteconomy may overheat and derail, put-ting pressure on Beijing to hike interestrates and let its currency rise.

On the domestic front, Wen addedthat it was “very important to controlinflation,” in China and maintain theyuan “at a reasonable level” despite in-ternational pressure on Beijing to alterits exchange rate policy.

“We have to take a certain stimu-lus policy so that the economy will keepon growing steadily at a relatively highrate,” he said.

The yuan has been effectivelypegged at about 6.8 to the dollar sincemid-2008 to aid exporters during theglobal financial crisis — a policy somein the United States and Europe say givesthose exporters an unfair advantage.

The crisis in Europe, driven bysoaring debt and public deficit levels, deepened last week when Fitch Ratingsdowngraded the sovereign debt of Spainon concerns austerity measures will hitgrowth.

The downgrade came a day afterMadrid approved a tough package toshore up public finances and reassureinvestors that it will not follow Greeceinto a debt crisis.

Markets remain concerned despitea near trillion-dollar package to preventthe troubles of debt-ridden Greecespreading to the rest of Europe.

Chairman Ben Bernanke called Mon-day for the Group of 20 world powersto coordinate financial reforms moreclosely in order to strengthen the glo-bal economy. Addressing a Bank ofKorea conference via video link,Bernanke said there was a need for“extensive international cooperation”as governments overhaul marketrules in the wake of the global eco-nomic downturn.

“On a global level, the leadershipof the... G20 — which Korea is cur-rently chairing — will be essential inensuring that reforms are not onlystrong and effective but also consistentand coordinated across countries,” he

crisis in Europe shows that theworld’s economic woes are “farfrom over” and highlights theneed for reforms, the vice chair-man of the World Economic Fo-rum said on Sunday.

“What we... see as we gatherin the growing storm of a Euro-pean sovereign debt crisis is thatthe (global) crisis is far from over, that it is in many ways rekindledin a dangerous new contagion,”Mark Malloch-Brown said.

“The need to get the right in-ternational financial reforms inplace remains as pressing asever,” Malloch-Brown said at theopening session of a two-dayWorld Economic Forum GlobalRedesign Summit in Doha.

But, “this is not about anykind of single global fix,” he toldAFP on the sidelines of the sum-mit. “It’s finding smart ideaswhich work for particular issues.”

moil in the Spanish banking sector, and has raised fears that someeurozone economies will no longerbe in a position to repay debts.

World stocks and the euro, which dropped to a four-year lowagainst the dollar last week, havebeen under severe pressure due toconcerns over the debt crisis.

A panelist at a later session, chief executive officer of AbraajCapital, Arif Naqvi, also said thatcontinuing difficulties in Europe in-dicate that the world is not yet outof the crisis.

“I think the euro crisis provedto us that we’re actually just at theedge of a cataclysmic event. We’restill at the point where we can’t takeanything for granted,” he said.

However, Malloch-Brown saidthat Europe’s debt troubles couldprovide an impetus for reforms.

“If last year’s experience is any-thing to go by, a lot of the work onimproved financial systems occurredwhile the crisis was very hot,” hesaid. But “we’ll have to see whethera renewal of the crisis has that ef-fect or not.”

The wide-ranging, 600-pageGlobal Redesign Initiative reportpresented at the summit identifiesareas of weakness in the interna-tional financial and monetary sys-tem, highlighted by the global cri-sis, which it says need to be ad-dressed.

Global economic imbal-ances, insufficient risk manage-ment and a lack of transparencyhave contributed to the crisis, thereport said, adding that high in-stitutional and consumer leverageexacerbated it and liquidity driedup as it unfolded.

And the failure of some fi-nancial institutions that werethought to be strong “lead to acrucial loss of confidence in themarkets,” according to the report.

In 2008-2009, “the full ex-tent of the world economy’s sys-temic weaknesses and coopera-tive deficits were laid bare,” thereport added.

“It would be a serious, his-toric error to revert to compla-cency and return to business asusual,” it said.

Bernanke calls for G20to coordinate reforms

said. G20 finance ministers will meetin Busan, South Korea, later this weekfor talks likely to be dominated by thecontinued fallout from the global crisis.

“Strengthening the international fi-nancial system and ensuring that finan-cial institutions are carefully regulated, well capitalised, liquid, and transparentwill require extensive international co-operation,” Bernanke said.

Governments worldwide aredrawing up new measures to curb theexcesses of financial institutionsblamed for pushing many economiesto the brink. But critics say nationalefforts will be largely ineffective in anage when banks and investment housescan make cross-border trades in a frac-tion of a second.

PARIS – Flaws in three genescould help explain why parts ofsouthern China have extraordinar-ily high rates of a type of nose-and-throat cancer, scientists saidon Sunday.

Experts from China, Singaporeand the United States trawledthrough a genetic datamine ofaround 10,000 people of southernChinese descent.

Half of the volunteers had beendiagnosed with nasopharyngealcarcinoma, a cancer that forms inthe lining of the upper throat ly-ing behind the nose. The other halfwere otherwise healthy.

What showed up in the cancergroup were telltale variants inthree genes, according to the re-search, reported in the journalNature Genetics.

The three, named TNFRSF19,MDSIEVI1 and CDKN2A/2B,have been previously linked withleukaemia.

Another pointer in the cancerpatients was a variation in the hu-man leukocyte antigen (HLA)

The findings are important, saysthe study, as they could shed lighton the molecular pathways of na-sopharyngeal carcinoma and itshigh prevalence in southern China, especially Guangdong province.

In this region, the cancer occursin about 25 cases per 100,000people, which is 25 times higherthan the rest of the world. As a re-sult, nasopharyngeal carcinoma issometimes called the “Cantonesecancer.”

Only Alaska, parts of northernAfrica and southeastern Asia havesimilarly high rates.

The research was led by theGenome Institute of Singapore andthe Sun Yat-Sen University CancerCentre in Guangzhou.

Nose and throat cancers havelifestyle as well as inherited fac-tors. Smoking, in particular, is amajor cause. In nasopharyngealcarcinoma, consumption of saltedand pickled foods as well as highlevels in the blood of Epstein-Barrvirus are additionally in the spot-light.

Microsoft’s Windows 7operating system, joining a

slew of manufacturers trying totap demand for the sleek devices fol-lowing Apple’s launch of the iPad.

AsusTek is among several Tai-wanese computer makers to displaytablet PCs at the five-day ComputexShow in Taipei that opens Tuesday.

Acer Inc., the world’s second larg-est PC vendor, unveiled last week a7-inch touchscreen tablet that likemany other coming models runs onAndroid, the operating system thatGoogle is distributing for free formobile devices.

AsusTek’s touchscreen tablet, withthe name of Eee Pad, comes in 10-and 12-inch sizes and is set to go onsale in the first quarter of 2011.

In addition to full Windows sup-port, Company Chairman Jonney Shihsaid Eee Pad is equipped with a Webcamera and runs Flash by Adobe Sys-tems which will allow users to viewYouTube and other video programs onthe Internet.

The 10-inch Eee Pad will sell for

$399 to $449. No price tag wasgiven for the 12-inch model.

By contrast, Apple’s iPads cost$499, $599 or $699 depending onthe data storage capacity. But iPadsuse the HTML5 standard and itslack of Flash support has alienatedsome users.

AsusTek also unveiled on Mon-day an e-notepad that serves as bothan electronic-reader and note-tak-ing device, with a built-in camerathat will let the user grabscreenshots of lecture slides.

NEW YORK – If milk does the heart good, it might do the hearteven more good if it comes from dairy cows grazed on grass instead ofon feedlots, according to a U.S. study.

as high blood pressure and smoking.Campos said these new findings,

published in the American Journal ofClinical Nutrition (http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/ajcn.2010.29524v1), suggest thatCLA offers heart-healthy benefits thatcould more than offset the harms ofsaturated fat in milk.

“Because pasture grazing leads tohigher CLA in milk, and it is the natu-ral feed for cattle, it seems like moreemphasis should be given to this typeof feeding,” she told Reuters Health.

Dairy products in the United Statescome almost exclusively from feed-lots, she added, and cow’s milk is theprimary source of CLA. Beef con-tains a small amount.

For their study, Campos and her

colleagues looked to Costa Ricawhere pasture grazing of dairy cowsis still the norm.

They identified nearly 2,000 CostaRicans who had suffered a non-fatalheart attack, and another 2,000 whohad not and then they measured theamount of CLA in fat tissues to esti-mate each person’s intake.

Since CLA typically travels witha host of other fats, the researcherswent a step further to tease apart itseffects from those of its predomi-nantly unhealthful companions. Thedifference in risk attributed to CLAsubsequently rose to 49 percent.

“Whole-fat milk and dairy prod-ucts have gotten such a bad reputa-tion in recent years due to their satu-rated fat and cholesterol contents, andnow we find that CLA may be incred-ibly health-promoting,” said MichelleMcGuire, spokesperson for thejournal’s publisher, the AmericanSociety for Nutrition. “Whole milkis not the villain!”

Berdych added: “There was thedelay and the darkness, maybe Ihandled it better. My coach told methat Andy looked like he didn’t wantto play.”

And, speaking from the worldchampions’ altitude training base inSestriere on Sunday, he also sug-gested what his preferred formationis likely to be at the World Cup.

“Everyone plays with one truelone striker and nine (outfield)team-mates to run around and de-fend, no matter how many forwardsare on the pitch,” he said beforesuggesting he might play 24-year-old Marchisio behind his frontman.

“I like him a lot in that positionbecause of all our midfielders he’sthe one with best movement off theball.

“He gets in gaps, follows theaction and appears in empty spaces. And on top of that he helps to coverthe midfield.”

Another player who might begiven an unusual position is cen-tre-back Giorgio Chiellini.

“I’ll also try Chiellini out at left-back, I’ve asked the lads to makethemselves available for the cause.”

However, the World Cup win-

However his display ?in the hole’behind Wayne Rooney in the second halfagainst Japan, in which he helped En-gland come from 1-0 down to win 2-1,has now catapulted him to the ranks of?probables’ to travel to South Africa.

With rivals such as Tom Huddlestoneand Darren Bent failing to take theirchances in similar fashion and others suchas Stephen Warnock, Matthew Upson,Michael Dawson, Adam Johnson andScott Parker not even getting on the pitchit looks good for Cole, who began to re-cover his form at the end of the season atStamford Bridge, helping Chelsea win

But the winger, one of few En-gland players to perform well at the2006 World Cup in Germany, refusesto believe he is on the plane to SouthAfrica just yet. “I don’t want to gointo that,” he said. “You’ve got to bepragmatic about it. I came here 10days ago to try and enjoy my timeback with England and train well, andnow it’s in the manager’s hands.

The rest of the side was the sameas Domenech stuck with his new 4-3-3 formation. The match was a per-sonal milestone for Domenech, whodrew level with former managerMichel Hidalgo’s record of 75matches in charge of the nationalside. The 58-year-old Domenech, who succeeded Jacques Santini af-ter Euro 2004, is stepping down tobe replaced by Bordeaux coachLaurent Blanc after the World Cup.

“Me and Jenson were able tocompete with them and push ourhardest to be on their tails. To getour second 1-2 is fantastic.”

Hamilton had a prime view asWebber and Vettel’s collision un-folded just ahead of him. The Britonwas unwilling to apportion blame, but joked that it had been a spectacu-lar - and welcome - sight.

“It was great to watch. Likewatching an action movie in HD or3D,” said Hamilton. “It was fantas-tic. I got the best view of it!

“Sebastian is safe, but I just sawSeb go up the inside, Mark held hisline and no room to move right, andno reason for Seb to move to theright. It was unfortunate for them andfortunate for us.”

PRenault boss Eric Boullier haspraised the breakthrough perfor-mance of Vitaly Petrov in Turkeylast weekend - even though the Rus-sian failed to finish in the points.

Petrov delivered the best form ofhis rookie season, getting throughto Q3 for the first time, and battlinghard with Ferrari duo Felipe Massaand Fernando Alonso for most of theIstanbul race.

However, a late race collisionwith Alonso resulted in a puncturethat pitched Petrov off the track andforce him into the pits for new tyres.

But although Petrov had little toshow for his weekend’s efforts,Boullier said he was impressed withthe job that his driver did.

“We have been very happy withhim all through the weekend,”Boullier told AUTOSPORT. “Hemade no mistakes and had a verystrong race pace – so it is course abig disappointment when you arenearly at the end, ready to scorepoints thanks to no other help, andsomething like that happens.

“But he definitely made a stepforward this weekend. He knew thetrack very well and he loves thistrack - and I think it is, in terms ofbuilding stuff and building his selfconfidence, definitely a huge boost.”

And although conceding thatPetrov will face another big chal-lenge in Canada, because it is a trackhe has never been to before, Boullierbelieves Petrov can now regularlyfight for the points.

“He can be a little bit off the pacein Canada because he does not know

the track, but more than this is a com-plete race weekend,” he said.

“He had good pace in practice, good pace in qualifying, having donethis Q3 for once, and also keeping thatpace during the race. During 54 lapshe was coming close to Massa andkept Alonso on the back. It is a goodexperience for him. He did it and hecan repeat it.”
