government because it has theauthority whether it will disci-pline them or even demolishthem properly,” he said.

Meanwhile, a member of theBadung House, NyomanKaryana, stated that his partyslightly doubted the relevantagencies in overseeing those il-legal accommodations, espe-cially the villas. “It has beenproven by the existence of ram-pant i l legal vil las. Even, ev-ery morning the civilian securityguards (Trantib) of South Kutawere deployed to come down tovillas for making supervisionand checking their permit. Hisparty also provided guidance anddirection to the owner of villas

“Their classical reason is thatthey do not know how to submitthe permit. Even, some said theyhad no time because they are lazyif they have to submit it back andforth. For that purpose, we pro-vided them with obvious directionhow to submit the permit and evenbring the license’s form of thesubmission,” he explained.

The annual Ngusaba ritual heldin the eighth month based on Ba-linese calendar (falling aroundJanuary-February) is a unique tra-dition. There are so many roastedpigs put into offering. Other thanthis uniqueness, the Ngusaba alsoindicates the togetherness of thelocal villagers.

Adviser to the Timbrah Cus-tomary Vil lage, I NengahSudarsa, who is also the Secre-tary of Karangasem RegencyGovernment, stated that pursuantto the philosophy or regulation ofcustomary village there was noobligation to offer a roasted pigfor each household. However, ithighly depended on the sincerityand ability of each customary vil-lager. But, due to their together-ness, each household presented aroasted pig together with itscomplementary oblation.

Sudarsa, who was a formerchief of the customary village, added that the ceremony reflectedthe togetherness of villagers. Ifthere were poor villagers or theywere unable to offer roasted pig,

then ‘the haves’ would delivertheir roasted pig after being of-fered. On that account, peoplewho were unable to roast pigcould even have a larger amountof meat because so many villag-ers gave them.

As a matter of fact , saidSudarsa, the core purpose ofNgusaba Dalem ritual was to wor-ship the Goddess Durgha (consortof Lord Shiva) to invoke welfareand safety for the Timbrah villag-ers in particular. “Offering theroasted pig poses an expression ofgratitude of local villagers for thegrace bestowed in the form ofcrops and livestock by the godsworshiped at the Dalem Temple ofTimbrah Customary Village,” saidSudarsa.

He added that since not all resi-dents were able to offer a roastedpig they could optionally offerroasted duck accompanied bycomplementary offerings likeCanang Bayuan depending ontheir sincerity and capability.

Sudarsa said the total house-hold at his village was 789. Re-

lated to the successful harvest inthe rice fields and estates and thenon-existence of disease outbreakaffecting the livestock in the vil-lage territory, it could be assuredthat all households would offer atleast one roasted pig. It meantthere were no less than 800 crispyroasted pigs of various sizeswould be offered in the temple.

The tradit ion of offeringroasted pig together with comple-mentary offerings was not onlyperformed at the Ngusaba Dalemritual. In the Ngusaba Sumbu fall-ing around July, local villagerswere also able to present the sameofferings. Except for both uniquetraditions, the regulation of cus-tomary village also set forth theprohibition of organizing anykind of gambling. For those whoviolated the rules, the village au-thority would impose a sanctionin the form of fines like in par-ticular amount of rice. So far, thelocal villagers were very obedi-ent to the regulations and theylived their life relatively peace-fully. (bud)

OSLO, Norway – A Norwegian lawmaker has nominated WikiLeaks for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, saying Wednesday that its disclosures of classified documents promote world peace by holding govern-ments accountable for their actions. The Norwegian Nobel Committee keeps candidates secret for 50 years, but those with nomination rights sometimes make their picks known.

presidential family, sayingWikiLeaks “made a small contribu-tion to bringing down” that regime.

The prize committee typically re-ceives more than 200 nominations,so being nominated doesn’t say any-thing about a candidate’s chances ofactually winning. And there’s no wayof knowing for sure that people whoannounce candidates actually sub-mitted a legitimate nomination to theaward committee.

Kristian Harpsviken, a leadingNobel-watcher and director of thePeace Research Institute Oslo, saidhe didn’t consider WikiLeaks as astrong candidate for the 10 millionkronor ($1.6 million) award. “Thereason I think it’s unlikely is thatthere has been so much criticism ofWikiLeaks, not least how they havehandled identification issues of

people in the documents,” he said.“I don’t think it quite does the trick.”

Harpsviken keeps a list of “pos-sible and confirmed nominations,”based on public announcements andhis own sources. His list this year in-cludes WikiLeaks as well as BradleyManning, the Army private accusedof leaking material to the website.

Kyrgyz President RozaOtunbayeva, Afghan human rightsadvocate Sima Samar, and severalrights groups including U.S.-basedWings of Hope and Cuban opposi-tion movement Damas de Blanco arealso on the list.

His own top guess is Russianrights group Memorial, followed byactivists Leymah Gbowee of Liberiaand Ory Okolloh of Kenya. Thecommittee will announce the win-ner in October.

It was Saleh’s boldest gambityet to stave off turmoil in Yemen,a key ally of Washington againstal Qaeda, as he sought to avert ashowdown with the opposition thatmight risk sparking an Egypt-styleuprising in the deeply impover-ished state.

The stakes are high for Yemen,on the brink of becoming a failedstate, as it tries to fight a resurgental Qaeda wing, quell southernseparatism, and cement peace withShi’ite rebels in the north.

Yemen’s biggest oppositionparty, the Islamist Islah, welcomedSaleh’s initiative but snubbed apresidential appeal to call off pro-tests. INNISFAIL, Australia – Australia’s biggest cyclone in a century devastated several towns andcut power to 175,000 people Thursday, terrifying Queenslanders already reeling from months ofcatastrophic flooding. There were no reports of fatalities as police scoured the worst-hit areas onnortheast Australia’s coast, but Queensland premier Anna Bligh warned of a sense of “despair”with some residents losing everything to the storm.

“significant devastation”. “Somepeople will be going back into theircommunities... and facing scenes ofconsiderable devastation,” she said.

“There are people now that havelost their homes, they lost theirfarms, they have lost their cropsand they have lost their livelihoodsand I have no doubt that many ofthem will experience a great senseof despair.”

Regional hub Cairns, a centre

for foreign tourists visiting theGreat Barrier Reef, was sparedYasi’s worst with problemslargely restricted to fallen treesand minor damage to buildings.

But in small towns furthersouth, families cowered as roofswere torn from homes, and some10,500 people huddled in make-shift evacuation centres as thestorm raged with a din likened toa jet engine or an express train.

Comparisons between the fa-cial characteristics of figures fromseveral of da Vinci’s works —such as “St. John the Baptist” andthe “Angel Incarnate” — revealstriking similarities with the MonaLisa’s nose and mouth, he said.“There are remarkable similari-ties,” Vinceti told reporters.

What is more, Vinceti said daVinci had left clues to the model’sidentity in tiny letters L and Swhich he and his team foundpainted into the eyes of the MonaLisa. “Close examination of ahigh-quality digital copy of theportrait had revealed an L forLeonardo and an S for Salai,” hesaid. But Vinceti’s claims havebeen disputed by the Louvre mu-seum. The museum said it had car-ried out “every possible laboratorytest possible” on the picture in2004 and then again in 2009, andinsisted that “no inscriptions, let-ters or numbers, were discoveredduring the tests.”

The clashes marked a danger-ous new phase in Egypt’s up-heaval: the first significant vio-lence between government sup-porters and opponents. The cri-sis took a sharp turn for theworse almost immediately afterMubarak rejected the calls forhim to give up power or leavethe country, stubbornly pro-claiming he would die on Egyp-tian soil.

His words were a blow to theprotesters. They also suggestthat authorities want to turnback the clock to the tight statecontrol enforced before the pro-tests began.

Mubarak’s supporters turnedup on the streets Wednesday insignificant numbers for the firsttime. Some were hostile to jour-nalists and foreigners. Two As-sociated Press correspondentsand several other journalistswere roughed up in Cairo. StateTV had reported that foreignerswere caught distributing anti-Mubarak leaflets, apparentlytrying to depict the movementas foreign-fueled.

Indonesia makes startling admission on forestsment.

The findings were released af-ter an investigation by a task forceset up by President Susilo BambangYudhoyono to look into the “forestmafia” — networks of miners, planters and officials blamed forrampant illegal land clearing.

It found that violations of lawsdesigned to protect Indonesia’s for-ests, home to endangered speciessuch as orangutans and tigers, had“become widespread in a numberof regions, especially in CentralKalimantan province”.

Indonesia is the world’s thirdbiggest emitter of greenhousegases, due mainly to deforestationby the palm oil and paper indus-tries, which is fuelled by corrup-tion.

A University of Indonesia study

last year concluded that the Indo-nesian military acted as coordina-tor, financier and facilitator for il-legal loggers in Borneo, where de-forestation rates are among the fast-est in the world.

The forestry ministry promisedto stop issuing new plantation andmine permits in the province andto cooperate with the CorruptionEradication Commission to enforcethe law.

Yudhoyono has been under pres-sure from environmentalists toimplement a promised two-yearmoratorium on the clearing of natu-ral forest and peatland, which wasdue to begin January 1.

Norway agreed in May last yearto contribute up to $1 billion to helppreserve Indonesia’s forests, in partthrough the moratorium.

President: RI offering many opportunities to entrepreneursprise in Indonesia because the coun-try is endowed with plenty of natu-ral resources,” the president said inhis address at launch of the NationalEntrepreneurship Movement (GKN)here on Wednesday.

The President said Indonesia alsohad huge human resources with agood demographic anatomy andhighly productive population.

He said it was the highly produc-

tive population that would be thebackbone of the country’s economy.

“Our economy also continues togrow and it is moving toward highgrowth. Our gross domestic productnow equals US$700 billion,” he said.

The chance is then open widerdue to the prevalence of high de-mand for goods and services for apopulation of 237 million with ahigh purchasing power.

After all, he said, the people’scommand of technology and scienceis improving. The government, busi-nesses and other stake-holders alltake part in supporting and provid-ing assistance for new businesses, including assistance in the form ofsmall-holder’s credit scheme (KUR).

The president added that thenumber of unemployed based datafrom the Central Bureau of Statis-

tics (BPS) in Indonesia reached8.32 million or 7.14 percent of thetotal population of 237.8 million.

“This is not a lie. This data re-ally exists. It was calculated by theBPS,” the president said.

He said that members of theworkforce in Indonesia reached116.5 million jobs were for 108.2million so that unemployed peopleaccounted for 8.32 percent.

LOUISVILLE – Yum BrandsInc., owner of the Pizza Hut, Taco Belland KFC fast-food brands, saidWednesday that its fourth-quarter netincome rose 27 percent with robustgrowth overseas and a rebound in theU.S.

The company’s operating profit inthe U.S., where it has struggled as re-cession-weary consumers are still eat-ing at home more than they used to,rose 15 percent for the period. The fig-ure fell 2 percent for the third quarter.

The improved U.S. showing comesas Yum works to put its Long JohnSilver’s and A&W restaurant chainsup for sale so it can focus on its grow-ing international business.

Yum’s overseas expansion is inhigh gear. It opened 507 new restau-rants in China and 884 in other coun-tries outside the U.S. last year. It op-erates more than 37,000 restaurantsaround the world.

Louisville-based Yum reported netincome of $274 million for the threemonths that ended Dec. 25, or 56 centsper share. That compares with $216million, or 45 cents per share, a yearearlier.

The company’s fourth-quarter rev-enue was $3.56 billion, up from $3.37billion.

The results beat analysts’ expecta-tions in some respects and fell shortin others. They expected Yum to earn60 cents per share on revenue of $3.51billion, according to FactSet. Analyststypically exclude one-time items.

Yum shares closed at $47.73, up31 cents, before the report was re-leased. The stock rose another $1.28,or 2.7 percent, to $49.01 after hours.

It cut its annual revenue fore-cast by 3 percent to 7.2 trillionyen citing lower-than-expectedsales in the consumer, profes-sional and devices segment, which includes LCD TVs.

Operating income in that segmentdropped by almost half in the thirdquarter, while profit more thandoubled in the network products andservice division, which includesgames, partly on brisk sales of thelatest version of Gran Turismo mo-tor racing game, Sony said.

It cut its forecast for sales ofTVs in the full year to March 31to 23 million units, down from itsprevious forecast of 25 million. But it kept its forecast for PS3game console sales unchanged at15 million units.

Shares in Sony have fallen 21

percent since a high reached onMarch 23 last year, largely re-flecting the yen’s rise against thedollar and euro, which eats intooffshore earnings.

In contrast, shares in Samsunghit an all-time high late last monthon an expected rebound after hit-ting its worst profit in six quar-ters.

The results came a week afterSony unveiled a new portablegames device, the Next Genera-tion Portable (NGP), aiming tocompete with Nintendo Co Ltdand fend off competition fromApple Inc’s iPhone.

The NGP, announced alongsidea plan to make PlayStation gamesavailable on other makers’ An-droid-based mobile devices, wasgenerally well received, but ana-lysts said its specifications wouldlikely make it more expensivethan Nintendo’s DS, potentiallydeterring some consumers.

Shares in Sony rose 0.7 percentahead of the announcement, out-performing a 0.3 percent fall inthe Nikkei average.

This won’t be Jagger’s first ap-pearance on a Grammy telecast. In1986, the Rolling Stones were givena lifetime achievement award by EricClapton, and they performed on theshow by satellite. “We did a remotefrom London, and it was at leastthree o’clock there,” said show pro-ducer Ken Ehrlich.

“I think they had been celebratinga little time before we went on cam-era,” he said. “It was quite a moment.”Ehrlich has produced the show for 31years and has always wanted Jagger

and the Stones to perform, but itdidn’t work out until this year.

Ehrlich said it was Jagger’s ad-miration for Burke that brought himto the Grammy stage. “He’s askedme not to go into detail about whathe’s doing, but I think when you seethe performance, it will make a lotsense,” said Ehrlich. “I think it wasthe idea of the performance that wasintriguing to him and really broughthim here.”

Jagger will join a performers listthat includes Rihanna, Cee Lo,Gwyneth Paltrow, Eminem, ArcadeFire, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Usher,Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum andJustin Bieber. When asked who wasleft on his list of must-have Grammyperformers, Ehrlich, noting the nu-merous legends who have appearedon the Grammy stage, said: “In allhonestly, that’s about it.”

1,500-year-old church found in IsraelGanor of the Israel Antiquities Author-ity. He said the floor was “one of themost beautiful mosaics to be uncov-ered in Israel in recent years.” “It isunique in its craftsmanship and levelof preservation,” he said.

Archaeologists began digging atthe site, known as Hirbet Madras, inDecember. The Antiquities Authoritydiscovered several months earlier thatantiquities thieves had begun plunder-ing the ruins, which sit on an unin-habited hill not far from an Israelifarming community.

Though an initial survey suggestedthe building was a synagogue, the ex-cavation revealed stones carved withcrosses, identifying it as a church. The

building had been built atop an-other structure around 500 yearsolder, dating to Roman times, whenscholars believe the settlement wasinhabited by Jews.

Hewn into the rock underneaththat structure is a network of tunnelsthat archaeologists believe were usedby Jewish rebels fighting Romanarmies in the second century A.D.

Stone steps lead down from thefloor of church to a small burial cave, which scholars suggest might havebeen venerated as the burial place ofthe Old Testament prophet Zecharia.Ganor said the church would remaincovered until funding was obtainedto open it as a tourist site.

with an estimate that 85 percent ofoyster reef ecosystems have beenlost, but said that figure was likelylow because some areas lacked his-torical records for comparison. Thestudy also did not include oysterreefs in parts of South Africa, China,Japan, and North and South Korea.

Other studies and observations inthose areas “suggest that wild oys-ter abundance was much higher inthe past and that reefs have declinedgreatly in abundance or have disap-peared altogether,” the authors said. The one bright spot in the oysterworld was in the Gulf of Mexico, where native oyster catches are “thehighest in the world despite signifi-cant declines in abundance andreefs,” according to the study.

Five regions where oystercatches were globally the highestwere located in eastern NorthAmerica, from the Virginia coastsouthward and also in the Gulf ofMexico. Oysters are important toecosystems because they filter im-purities from water and providefood and employment for peopleliving in coastal communities.

The decline in oyster populationoften begins when trawling or dredg-ing destroys the structure of parts ofthe reef, leaving surviving oysters vul-nerable to stresses in the environment.

LOS ANGELES – Seven-timeTour de France winner LanceArmstrong has not entered the Tourof California, but changes in theevent’s drug test program revealedWednesday open the door for himto do so. Organizers of America’sbiggest cycling race, to be contestedMay 15-22, will have the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) admin-ister drug tests for the event ratherthan the International CyclingUnion.

The switch, which sees USADAhandle competition tests as well aspre-event random drug tests thatstart February 15, led the US raceto rescind a practice used last yearthat barred competitors who werebeing investigated for doping. A USgrand jury has spent months look-ing into doping in pro cycling withArmstrong and several of his asso-ciates having testified since FloydLandis, an admitted dope cheat whoforfeited a Tour de France title, ac-cused Armstrong of doping.

Top seed and Spanish heart throb FelicianoLopez, seen here in January 2011, made ashock first round exit from the South AfricanOpen Wednesday after losing a three-set thrillerto Canadian Frank Dancevic.

On a bad day for seeds, third Janko Tipsarevic ofSerbia lost 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 6-7 (4/7) to Jesse HutaGalung of the Netherlands and seventh RainerSchuettler of Germany fell 6-3, 4-6, 4-6 to Japa-nese Go Soeda. Number two Yen-Hsun Lu of Tai-wan and number five Florent Serra of France madeearly exits Tuesday, leaving just three of eight seedsin the second round of the 442,500-dollar ATP event.

The last-16 phase began later as the organisersplayed catch-up after two days of weather delaysand South Africans Rik de Voest and Izak van derMerwe triumphed along with Indian Davis Cup starSomdev Devvarman.

Reigning Commonwealth Games and AsianGames champion Devvarman took advantage of amuch longer gap between matches to eliminate HutaGalung 6-3, 6-4 victory on one of two outside courts.Lopez, a 29-year-old favourite with female specta-tors at Montecasino entertainment centre in a plushnorthern Johannesburg suburb, began impressivelyagainst a casual Dancevic.

The tall, swarthy Spaniard with two ATP titles tohis credit won most of his service games comfort-ably while Dancevic often held serve with consid-erable difficulty.

But the outsider did drag the opening set to a tiebreaker won by Lopez and this boosted his confi-dence sufficiently for him to break serve twice enroute to a 6-2 second-set success. After 12 gameswith serve in the decisive set, Dancevic wasted threematch points in the tie breaker and Lopez one be-fore the Canadian made no mistake when he got afourth chance and broke the serve of the Spaniard.

So calm when the match began, Lopez flung hisracquet on the ground as the centre court duelreached a climax, visibly stung by the resistance ofa rival who did not make it past the first qualifyinground for the Australian Open.

ROBERT Kubica says he hasevery reason to feel upbeat about thepotential of his new Renault, despitea day of mixed fortunes at Valenciaon Wednesday. Although Kubicaended the day fifth overall on thetimesheets, he was left slightly frus-trated with the handling of the carand a few niggling problems thatprevented him getting more mile-age.

Despite those factors, Kubicasaid he was keeping a positive frameof mind about his first experienceof the R31, as he prepared for a sec-ond day of running on Thursday.

“Today was quite a different daybecause of a few car issues that wehad this morning, and the main dif-ference was the tyres,” said the Pole.“So it is very difficult to get the rightfeeling. “Feeling wise it is not asgood as it was last year but I hope itwill be the same feeling for every-body. So we will see.”

Kubica believes that high tyredegradation made it difficult tojudge the ultimate performance ofhis car - although he could alreadyget some good feedback about itsKERS and moveable rear wing.

“I think tyres are degrading quitea lot here, which has a big influenceon the lap times,” he said. “But to-day was not really ideal for seeingthe lap time and performance, butof course it is always nice to have agood feeling and a competitive car.But we did many laps and we didoperate KERS from the beginning,

“I am not feeling well at all, Ihave a constant feeling of sicknessand it hasn’t improved all day,” saidBautista. “I tried to ride the bike thismorning; I really wanted to use thegood track conditions and try to domy first 2’00 minute lap-time ofSepang!

“But immediately I made thefirst lap, the physical effort madethe sickness worse and it was justimpossible. So, I must say sorry tothe team and I am also very disap-pointed for myself.”

Kubica upbeat despite tricky first daywhich was working perfectly, andalso the rear wing.

“So actually there were quite afew positive things where we did nothave any issues – which is alwaysgood. We had a couple of issues withthe car which we hope to solve, andactually we solved them and theycould run pretty well.”

Although rivals Red Bull Racingand Ferrari have been fastest so farin early testing with their new cars,Kubica says past experience withBMW Sauber in 2008 has shownhim not to read anything into the firstfew days of running.

“I will repeat again the same story

– but I still have in my mind 2008.We had the Valencia test with somefaces [at the team] like we know wewill stop racing the day after, be-cause we were really slow. And thenone-and-a-half months later wewere on the front row in Australia,so things can change very quickly –especially in Valencia.

“The track characteristic can bequite strange here, so that is why Iam not really looking for the feel-ing, as it is really a special track. The many problems you get hereyou will never get them on 80 percent of other tracks during thegrands prix.”
