“On that account, we urge the regent along with theranks to take quick measure. One of them is by review-ing the legislation on the market management,” said alegislator of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle(PDI-P) faction, Wayan Misna, in the plenary sessiondelivering general perspective of the faction in responseto the accountability report of the regent recently.

According to Misna, the regulation administrating thematter needed reviewing namely the regional regulation(Perda) of Klungkung Number II/1994 concerning withlevies of market and decree of Klungkung Regent No.1511/1061/Dispenda/1995 concerning with the numberof dispensation of kiosk and stall rental payment for thebuilding located at block A. “Aside from optimizing thefunction of market (because, currently most blocks donot function), it is also intended for structuring the mar-ket because it was not in appropriate with the develop-ment of time,” he added.

Seeing the market conditions in general, it shouldbecome a reference of the regents in years to come. Atleast, before issuing a policy, the regent along with theranks had first to explore the real issues happening in thefield.

Another legislator, Komang Sumajaya, mentioned thepublic market of Klungkung should be made into publicfacilities to accommodate the arts and crafts producedby community. Moreover, after the closure of C-class

Tinga-Tinga Village, Gerokgak subdistrict and thesurrounding areas are now threatened by drought. This condition is triggered by the irrigation buildingin the area of Saba River, Seririt, that currently func-tioned to channel water into the region is now notused optimally or redundant.

In fact, based on information obtained last Sun-day (Jul 18), the irrigation project commonly knownas Saba River Dam was built in last 2008 and spentbillions of rupiahs. It was said that such large amountof fund was the aid of Japanese Government. Dur-ing the previous year, the water from the Saba RiverDam indeed flowed smoothly to the rice fields at theTinga-Tinga Village and surrounding areas. How-ever, since about five months ago, the water com-pletely jammed. The congestion caused the irriga-tion canals leading to Tinga-Tinga area to be dry andfilled with garbage and dead animals.

Public Markets of Klungkung are not functioning optimally. Mainly, they have somethingto do with stall rental management. There are still many empty stalls and indicated fre-quently utilized for place of obscene deeds by irresponsible people. Of course, this conditionrequires hard work and responsibility of government, so that grandiose building spendingmuch money will not be in vain.

excavation activities were not followed up by govern-ment policy that provided new job opportunities. Even, the potential that was actually available as new job op-portunities was not taken advantage maximally. A legis-lator of Duumvirate Faction mentioned that a number ofpotentials even could accommodate them through publicfacilities such puppet craft painting at Kamasan, endekweaving at Sampalan, songket weaving at Gelgel, goldand silver craft at Tegak, pottery craft at Tojan, coconutshell craft at Banjarangkan, banana leaf base craft at Satra, gong instrument at Tihingan, cepuk weaving in NusaPenida and some others.

With better and large building conditions, publicmarket of Klungkung was in fact far left behind com-pared to Galiran Market in terms of revenue gener-ated. Galiran Market with vile condition and mostbuildings supported by bamboo or wooden logs, evencould generate revenue at least IDR 159 million permonth. “Klungkung public market is still below Galiranmarket,” said Chief of Market Management, NyomanMudiarta.

Unfortunately, the Regent of Klungkung, WayanCandra, could not be asked for his confirmation in re-lation to the matters of those markets. As scheduled, the regent would respond to various criticisms andquestions of the legislative in the upcoming continuedplenary session. (kmb20)

Redundant irrigation, hundreds of hectaresof rice field threatened to dry

Surya, said the drought occurred since the past fivemonths because there was no more water flows fromthe Saba River Dam. Other than causing the irriga-tion channels dirty, the non-flowing of water in thegutter also made hundreds of hectares of rice fieldsin the Tinga-Tinga area and surrounding areas werethreatened by drought and crop failure.

For that purpose, he hoped related agencies inBuleleng Regency could pay immediate attentionto the problem, including distributing the waterevenly in order all productive rice fields could bereached by the water supply. Except for threateningthe productive rice fields, lack of water supply wouldalso threaten the continuation of the plans to expandabout 60 hectares of new rice fields at Tinga-TingaVillage and surrounding areas. As a matter of fact, theplan actually became the part of future program to sup-port the food security in Buleleng Regency. “Yes, weindeed have planned to open approximately 60 to 70hectares of new rice field but we find serious obstaclein the form of water supply,” he said. When they grow older, right on en-tering secondary school, they join cus-tomary village youth club or SekaaTaruna. Here, with their male friendsand their brothers and sisters start tolearn about organization. Many thingscan be learned through this organiza-tion. Since it has affiliation to custom-ary village, they can learn about themaking of some simple oblation underguidance of senior oblation maker andvarious traditional arts. In Bali, thisyouth club actually play important rolein preparing young generation to main-tain their valuable cultural heritages orto prepare themselves for inheritingcustomary responsibility.

With their male counterpart, here theyoung girls also learn to play drama ormore complex traditional arts. Populargenres of performance showed are pureentertainment and the one in combina-tion with sacred dance. The latter usu-ally features Calonarang. This magicaldrama involves a combination of maleand female players. In essence, thisCalonarang drama highlights the end-less fight between truth and untruthsymbolizing by sanctified effigies ortapakan like Rangda and Barong.

By and large, it is also associatedwith ritual events at local temple. In the

following stage, when woman getsmarried she will enter the new organi-zation, namely customary village. Hav-ing learned much about ritual works, itis now the time to practice them inwider social life. They should attendsome socio-religious activities whenthe events engage the members of cus-tomary village. At this stage, householdmother can remain to show her devo-tional service through the arts otherthan social works. Through the arts, they may join the drama or individualpsalmodic singing or pasantian.

How is about their private life? It isnormal as others. They also have op-portunity to build career in their pro-fession. In modern life with heteroge-neous professions as today, woman alsoworks as men do. Traditions do notimpede them to reach outstandingachievement in self-employee or officejob. If they work at daytime, some so-cial works will be held at the evening.

Tradition is not something obsolete.Even, it retains abundant inspirationsto create something new and creativethat is advantageous for modern life. However, traditions should also be re-viewed and adjust to the current con-dition without leaving behind its core.Tradition does not hinder women to gettheir career achievement. Even, it staysto give them a channel to express theirspiritual sense through devotional ser-vices. (BTN/punia)

More heavy rain was forecast along theYangtze’s upper reaches likely raising theflood pressures on major lakes downstreamlike the Dongting and Poyang — wherewater levels were already near warningmarks, the civil affairs ministry warned.

The government had previously said thatof July 13, 567 people were killed and 251missing in floods nationwide this year, witheconomic losses nearing 116 billion yuan(17 billion dollars).

LONDON - British Prime Minister David Cameron said the deci-sion to release the Lockerbie bomber was utterly wrong Monday, onthe eve of his first visit to Washington as premier.

Megrahi was the only person con-victed of the 1988 bombing of a USjet over the Scottish town of Lockerbie. Some 270 people were killed.

His release sparked outrage in theUnited States, where most of the vic-

tims were from.“The US-UK relationship is a

strong relationship,” Cameron toldBBC television.

“There’ll be a lots of things thatwe’ll be talking about: Afghanistan,BP, I’m sure Al-Megrahi will beraised as well.”

Anger over his release has beenratcheted up by claims about BP,which is already under fire over theGulf of Mexico oil spill.

London has insisted there was noevidence linking Megrahi’s release toprotecting a lucrative BP oil deal withLibya, amid mounting US concern.

“I have no idea of what BP did. I’mnot responsible for BP,” said Cameron, who became prime minister in May.

“All I know is, as leader of the op-position, I couldn’t have been moreclear. I thought the release of al-Megrahi was completely and utterlywrong.

“He was convicted for being thebiggest mass murderer in British his-tory.

Cameron meets US PresidentBarack Obama at the White House onTuesday. On Wednesday, he will bebriefed on Afghanistan operations atthe Pentagon before travelling to NewYork to meet business leaders, talksat the United Nations and a dinnerhosted by the city’s mayor MichaelBloomberg.

US must drop ‘cowboy’ logic to talk with Iranans will most likely build one atomic bomb.Well, this is a lie, but let’s say it is true. Howmany atomic bombs do you have?” the hardlinersaid in his speech, delivered in the northern cityof Qazvin.

“The Americans themselves say 5,000 plus...Is someone who has 5,000 fourth and fifth gen-eration atomic bombs, with very advancedlaunchers, afraid of one bomb? They are notafraid of one, not of a hundred, not of a thou-sand (bombs). They are afraid of the collectiveawakening of the Iranian soul.”

Displaying his trademark defiance,Ahmadinejad vowed that Iran would not backaway from its uranium enrichment programme.

Washington, he charged, knew full well thatIran is “not after an atomic bomb,” despite itsclaims to the contrary. World powers, immedi-ately after the UN sanctions measure waspassed, called for dialogue with Iran as part ofits dual track strategy of imposing punitive mea-sures and at the same time offering to hold talks.

But Ahmadinejad has ordered a freeze in talksat least until end of August as a “penalty” againstworld powers for imposing sanctions on Tehran.

Tensions emerged as thegovernment’s pointman on theworst environmental disaster inUS history also told the Britishenergy giant to report swiftly ona “detected seep” and “anoma-lies” near the well.

BP — which said Mondaythe bill from the leak had risen to3.95 billion dollars — had earlieracknowledged some bubbles ap-peared near the wellhead but ex-pressed optimism that the cap in-stalled three days earlier couldstay on.

US Coast Guard AdmiralThad Allen said Sunday that BPmust lay out its next steps in writ-ing for “opening the choke valveas quickly as possible withoutdamaging the well should hydro-carbon seepage near the well headbe confirmed.”

Tests were still ongoing to con-firm whether oil was seeping out.

But he stopped short of or-dering the immediate removal ofthe cap, which has halted thegushing crude for the first timesince April when BP’s DeepwaterHorizon oil rig exploded and cap-sized, killing 11 workers.

Allen said in his letter to BPchief managing director Bob Dudleythat the company must report to thegovernment in no more than fourhours when seeps are detected.

NEW ORLEANS - The US government ordered BP to submit an emergency plan for reopen-ing its capped Gulf of Mexico oil well after experts detected seepage from the surrounding seabed.

“Given the current observa-tions from the test, including thedetected seep a distance from thewell and undetermined anomaliesat the well head, monitoring of theseabed is of paramount importanceduring the test period,” he wrote.

BP’s chief operating officerDoug Suttles said pressure was ris-ing slowly in the well as expectedand touted “encouraging signs”that would allow the new cap toremain on until permanent reliefwells can be drilled in August.

“We have done some simpletests to determine if these bubblesappear to be from hydrocarbons orfrom something else and at thispoint we don’t believe they are”from hydrocarbons, he added.

The US government wasgranting extensions to exhaustivewell tests on a 24-hour basis, whileBP said the valves on the contain-ment cap would remain shut aslong as no leaks are discovered.

Three days of respite from theunsettling images of oil gushinginto the Gulf raised hopes amongresidents that this could mark thebeginning of the end of what esti-mates suggest is the biggest oilspill ever.

The start of the two-week op-eration to plug the well perma-nently by pumping in heavy drill-ing fluids and then cement is now

less than two weeks away as en-gineers have only 100 feet (30meters) left vertically to drill.

Gulf residents, who haveseen the crude tarnish their shore-l ines and cripple the localeconomy, reacted cautiously tonews that the cap was holdingback the crude.

“I don’t know if it’s goinghelp. It’s still a short-term fix,”New Orleans resident and medi-cal researcher Ashok Pullikuthtold AFP. “The permanent fix isthe relief wells. This cap has saveda month’s worth of spill damage.”

Measuring devices on BP’slatest cap have given steadily in-creasing high-pressure readingssince tests began Thursday on thewell bore, which stretches 2.5miles (four kilometers) below theseabed.

Allen did not specify whatsort of “seepage” or “anomalies”the testing had found but warnedearlier that “ultimately, we mustinsure no irreversible damage isdone which could cause uncon-trolled leakage from numerouspoints on the sea floor.”

BP said in a statement Mon-day that the current 3.95-billion-euro total cost of its response tothe spill so far included 67,500compensation payouts totalling207 million dollars.

Despite obtaining low profits, the public interest to develop thesebusinesses was moderately high, said Gatra. It was evident from theirparticipation in cultivating the pas-sion fruit reaching over 50 hectareson farmer’s land spreading through-out two villages namely Pelaga andBelok Village.

“Although gaining a smallamount of profit, we are very thank-ful because the passion fruit that wasformerly a wild plant growingaround the coffee or chocolate plantscould now have a business value,”he said. Hamlet Chief of Tinggan,Plaga Village, Nyoman Darsa, saidthe raw ingredients of passion fruitsyrup produced since 2009 wasplanted by farmers through inter-cropping system. Of the 50 hectaresof land planted with passion fruit, 25hectares faced crop failure, while therest produced 1,500 kg sold by farm-ers at IDR 3,000 per kg.

“In our cultivation, we stillfind season as an obstacle, so ourproduction could not continue.Hopefully, government especiallythe Badung Regency Governmentcould provide us assistance in theform of cool storage equipment tokeep the abundant production and

prevent them from damage,” he ex-plained. He also hoped governmentcould assist in terms of marketingso that local products could penetratethe tourism sector. This effort wouldencourage farmers to produce morevivaciously.

In the meantime, the DivisionHead of Production, Badung Agri-cultural, Plantation and Forestry Ser-vices, Wayan Witra, said the devel-opment of passion fruit syrup poseda pilot project started by farmersthrough field training school in the

form of seedling cultivation involv-ing the Bali Agricultural Services.

“In order to produce continu-ously, farmers are directed to de-velop the variety of yellow passionfruit. This yellow passion fruit is ableto bear fruit all the year round. How-ever, this yellow passion fruit is quiterare but has a larger size. In terms ofquality, the purple passion fruit andyellow passion fruit are almost thesame so that farmers are directed todevelop the yellow one,” he ex-plained. (par)

The beauty of undersea vista witha rich diversity of biota invites admi-ration of divers from around the world. In fact, the life of coral reefs and vari-ous kinds of ornamental fish living atsome points of waters is consideredundersea heaven.

According to some tourists, biodiversity living under the seaaround Bali in fact has a natural charmthat is very compelling. Even, they arealmost the same as the charm offeredby Bunaken (Manado, NorthSulawesi), which has been knownthroughout the world.

Jemeluk waters for example. Ac-cording to some tourists, the touristresort at Purwakerti Beach has pecu-liarities that could not be found inwaters anywhere in the world. Coralreefs in this tourist resort make tour-ists to drop their option for diving inthis area. Diverse endangered coral

In terms of its form, they vary. Somespecies resemble to a form of table orflowers. In addition, there is also a rarefish species such as unibrand, stingrays, tuna, sharks, and green turtles.

I Gede Suta as one of the tourismbusinesspeople in this region revealedthat at Jemeluk could be found a Japa-nese shipwreck of World War II withthe size of 14 x 10 meters. The shiphad been overgrown by beautiful coralreefs and widely favored because of itsbeauty. When glancing at the sea fromthe cliffs, it will be seen a beautiful scen-ery with Mount Agung as the back-ground and a vast expanse of sea.

According to story developing in thelocal community, the name Jemelukcomes from the word ‘nyeluk’ standingfor the bay. Therefore, Jemeluk poses a

beautiful bay with calm and not bumpywaves. “Since the water is crystal clear, visitors can see the beauty of coral reefsand marine biota living in it from the topof the cliff,” said Gede Suta.

In the midst of rapid developmentof marine tourism, the issue on the dam-age to coral reef is indeed frighteningspecter for the circle of marine tourismentrepreneurs. According to Suta, thedamage of existing coral reefs atJemeluk was not solely caused by hu-man activities. The existing damage wasdue to residual stray of bomb duringthe World War II. Nevertheless, suchdamage starts diminishing because ofthe growth of new coral reef.

Meanwhile, various efforts hadbeen made to preserve it. One ofthem was by developing cubical ar-tificial reef resembling a pyramidthat had been cultivated since sev-eral years ago. (BTN/BB)

BUSINESS

When flames from an opencooking fire raced through FidaHussein’s shack in northern India,it was a disaster for him and hispoverty-stricken family.

“We have nothing,” saidHussein as he stood in the ruins ofhis hut through which the sky couldbe seen between the burnt roof tim-bers in a remote corner of UttarPradesh, India’s most populousstate.

India’s number of million-aires grew by 51 percent to 126,700in 2009, according to US invest-ment bank Merrill Lynch and con-sultants Capgemini, boosted by abuoyant economy which grew 8.6percent in the last fiscal quarter.

But increasing wealth has nottrickled down to the likes of 40-year-old Hussein, a landlesslabourer whose seamed face is pre-maturely aged, and his family of sixchildren who have no toys, booksor other possessions.

“We have no clothes, no fur-niture,” he said, gesturing to whatremained of his burned out shackwhich he had roughly patched upwith plastic bags.

“We have only one quilt —eight of us sleep under it in win-ter,” he said, as his children playedin the dirt yard outside the hut. “Butthere’s no use in crying — no onehears us,” he added.

Like the more than 400 mil-lion Indians who have no electric-ity, Hussein’s home has has nolighting and there is no runningwater in the huts in his village, which lies 60 kilometres (40 miles)from the state capital Lucknow.

In 1947, in his midnight in-dependence address, India’s firstprime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, called for “the ending of povertyand ignorance and disease and in-

SEOUL - The International Monetary Fund is seeking toboost its lending resources from 750 to 1,000 billion dollars tobetter handle future financial crises, a report said Monday.

It said the building of low-cost, government-subsidised hous-ing had failed to meet demand andcalled on policy-makers to in-crease the supply of land for suchprojects.

Authorities in China have is-sued a slew of measures in recentmonths aimed at preventing theproperty market overheating andcausing a bubble that could derailthe world’s third-largest economy.

Chinese property prices inJune fell 0.1 percent from the pre-vious month, their first monthlyfall since the first quarter of 2009,according to official data.

The Financial Times said theIMF wants to agree financing dealsin advance that will be speciallytailored to individual countries, rather than respond to crises withconditional loan packages.

The aim would be to cool mar-ket nervousness over any nationfacing an imminent liquiditycrunch, the paper said.

Strauss-Kahn was in SouthKorea — which chairs the Group

South Korea’s presidentialpanel for the Group of 20 leadingeconomies confirmed it was coop-erating with the IMF to work out abetter safety net.

“So far the lending facilities ofthe IMF have been focused on cri-sis resolution more than crisis pre-vention,” Jie-Ae Sohn, spokesper-son of Presidential Committee forthe G20 Seoul Summit, told AFP.

“But South Korea, as thisyear’s president of the Group of 20leading economies is discussingwith the IMF packages that wouldcompliment and upgrade crisisprevention mechanisms.”

The spokesperson, however,declined to elaborate.

In a picture taken on April 28, 2010 an Indian villager sits outsideher home in Zarua, some 60kms from Lucknow. In April, the Plan-ning Commission, India’s premier economic policymaking body, raised its estimate of the number of Indians living in poverty -unable to meet nutritional needs - from 28 percent to 37 percent, which is roughly 440 million of the 1.2 billion population.

equality of opportunity.” It’s an end that still seems a

long way off. In April, the Planning Com-

mission, India’s premier economicpolicymaking body, raised its esti-mate of the number of Indians liv-ing in poverty — unable to meettheir nutritional needs — from 28percent to 37 percent, which isroughly 440 million of the 1.2 bil-lion populations.

A new international MulitplePoverty Index, developed at OxfordUniversity and measuring a widerange of household-level depriva-tion, suggests that more people aremired in poverty in just eight In-dian states than in the 26 poorestAfrican countries.

“There are two categoriesgrowing in the ‘Rising India’... thesuper rich, and the abysmally poor,”noted newspaper editor M.J. Akbarin a recent column.

But Hussein, who does workfor local farmers, says he has notmanaged to obtain a card needed towork in the jobs scheme. Others inthe area complain that they only geta few days work with theprogramme.

Former premier RajivGandhi once said only 15 percentof development money gets to itsintended targets. While thingshave improved, there is still a lotof “leakage” from povertyprogrammes.

The government will spendat least 250 billion dollars on ser-vices for the poor in the next fiveyears but a recent report by in-vestment house CLSA Asia Pa-cific Markets estimated more than100 billion dollars would beskimmed off.

“There’s personal gain goingon at public cost where people who

are supposed to look after the in-terests of the people accumulatelarge sums,” Anupama Jha, execu-tive director of Transparency Inter-national India, said.

Corruption, she said, is rife— percolating through government, the private sector, the police and thejudiciary.

Hardwari Lal, a labourer whohas three children and whose wifeis expecting a fourth, says he alsohas not received the card needed toget work.

Lal, 32, owes a moneylenderwho is charging five percent inter-est a month on a 7,000 rupee (150-dollar) loan he took out for his son’shospital bill.

“There is only so much I cando,” he said, adding he has no wayof feeding his family properly as hecan barely keep up with the inter-est payments let alone make a dentin the principal.

“So many poor villagers arecaught up in this cycle of povertywhere they get into difficulty andgo to a moneylender,” said local de-velopment worker Vikrant Kumar.

As part of its anti-povertydrive, the government is drafting aRight to Food Act which calls for agovernment-subsidized minimumof 25 kilograms (55 pounds) ofwheat and rice a month for house-holds below the poverty line.

Hussain feeds his six childrentwo meals a day — potatoes andwheat chapatis or flat bread — andeats one meal a day himself. Dal,the mainstay of Indian diets be-cause of its high protein, is too ex-pensive, he says.

Malnutrition among under-fives in India stands at 43.5 percent— worse than sub-Saharan Africa— and only nine percentage pointsless than when India’s “economic

miracle” began in 1991. During the same period,

India’s gross domestic product percapita has jumped 50-fold.

“We have gone from being afood deficit country to a food sur-plus country, which is a bigachievement, but there’s a lot to bedone in terms of getting the food topeople who need it,” said Indianpolitical author Ajoy Bose.

“You look slightly stupid inclaiming to be a major power oreven a modern progressive state ifyou haven’t done the very elemen-tary basics for your marginalisedpopulation,” Bose said.

Mountains of grain and veg-etables still rot each year due to

poor storage and distribution. The immense gap between

poor and rich has been pointed toby numerous commentators as a fac-tor fuelling a growing Maoist insur-gency that has spread across a largeswathe of the country and is at itsstrongest in remote, impoverishedregions.

“It is not just poverty that is in-creasing, it also the inequality,” saidsenior Indian communist leaderBrinda Karat.

The government insists it needsdouble-digit growth to eradicate pov-erty, but New Delhi-based food andtrade policy analyst DevinderSharma argues that effective distri-bution of wealth is the real key.

Microneedles? That’s right, tinylittle needles so small you don’t evenfeel them. Attached to a patch like aBand-Aid, the little needles barelypenetrate the skin before they dis-solve and release their vaccine.

Some medications are alreadydelivered by patches, such as nico-tine patches for people trying to quitsmoking. That’s simply absorbedthrough the skin. But attempts to de-velop patches with the flu vaccine

In the Georgia Tech work, the vac-cine is still injected. But the needlesare so small that they don’t hurt andit doesn’t take any special trainingto use this kind of patch. So twoproblems are solved right away —fear of needles, and disposal of left-over hypodermic needles.

“The goal has been a means to ad-minister the vaccine that is patientfriendly,” Mark R. Prausnitz of Geor-gia Tech said in a telephone inter-view.

FDA cites quality problems atNY brain-imaging lab

office in New York described prob-lems dating back to at least 2004. Itcited a litany of violations, includinga failure to reject batches of medica-tion that didn’t pass required tests. The drugs were for patients undergo-ing a type of brain scan called positronemission tomography, or PET.

“We are concerned about the qual-ity control systems and proceduralproblems that have allowed these sig-nificant deficiencies to occur,” theFDA told the center in the letter, writ-ten in December 2008.

In a statement sent Saturday to TheAssociated Press, Columbia Univer-sity Medical Center said it was re-structuring the laboratory that pro-

duces the drugs for the KreitchmanPET Center. It said an internal in-vestigation, performed at the FDA’srequest, had found “no evidence ofpatient harm,” but that all activitiesrelying on the manufactured com-pounds had been suspended whilereforms were undertaken.

“We acknowledge serious short-comings of quality control in themanufacturing process and recordkeeping at this lab,” said Dr. DavidHirsh, the medical center’s execu-tive vice president for research.

“That is why we are fundamen-tally reorganizing the lab’s man-agement and operations in responseto what the FDA told us. Whenmanufacturing resumes under newleadership, it will meet the strict-est standards and best practices forensuring the quality of these mate-rials,” Hirsh said.

The problems at the imagingcenter and the halt in research werefirst reported late Friday by TheNew York Times. The PET Centerremains in operation during theshakeup, and patients continue toreceive treatment, Columbia said.

The problems at the center in-volved radiotracing drugs injectedinto a patient’s brain to assist incapturing images used to studybrain activity.

The drugs are not supposed tohave any effect on the patient andthey degrade quickly — so fast, infact, that imaging centers must of-ten manufacture them on the spot, rather than buy them from outsidevendors. The manufacturing processis strictly regulated by the FDA.

Cannavaro is convinced Capellowill make changes for the 2012 Eu-ropean Championship qualifyingcampaign, with Terry the most likelyto lose his place.

“My thoughts are that John Terrywon’t be on the team sheet,”Cannavaro told the Daily Star Sun-day. “You don’t cross Fabio and hewon’t want anybody disrupting histournament again. “It was absolutelythe correct decision for the EnglishFA to keep Fabio on. He can makethis England team his own now - andI would actually make them thefavourites for Euro 2012.

“For me, the only two players thatcan be guaranteed to start in 2012are Ashley Cole and Wayne Rooney.“If Fabio gets rid of egos, I thinkEngland will see exactly why it wasa good decision to keep him on.”

FIFA inspectors in Japanto check World Cup bid

United States and Qatar and draw upreports on the feasibility of each bid.

FIFA’s 24 executives will choosethe 2018 and 2022 World Cup hostson December 2 in Zurich. Immediatelyafter arrival, the team, led by ChileanFootball Federation president HaroldMayne-Nicholls, inspected by helicop-ter the site in Osaka for an 83,000-seatstadium which would host the open-ing match and final.

The structure, tentatively namedOsaka Ecology Stadium, will be builton a former railway yard by the city’scentral station. The inspectors includedFIFA event management chief JuergenMueller and marketing head DavidFowler. Japan is counting on its

In its bid book submitted to FIFA inMay, Japan promised to treat footballfans worldwide to ultra-realistic livethree-dimensional broadcasts ofmatches.

Under the six-billion-dollar “Univer-sal Fan Fest” project, matches wouldbe viewed by 360 million people atnearly 400 select stadiums in FIFA’s 208member countries. GERMANY - Randy de Puniethas been diagnosed with a brokenright leg after his crash during theGerman Grand Prix. The French-man fell at Turn 4 on the ninth lapwhile amid a big gaggle of battlingriders, and it appears he mighthave been struck by either AlvaroBautista or Aleix Espargaro, bothof whom hit the crashed LCRHonda and fell.

With the race stopped, de Punietwas immediately taken to the medi-cal centre, where the initial diag-nosis suggested breaks to both thetibia and fibula in his right leg.

He was already racing in somediscomfort having suffered bruis-ing when he crashed on the oil fromJorge Lorenzo’s engine failure inqualifying. That accident saw dePuniet’s legs slam into fellowcrasher Ben Spies’ Tech 3 Yamahaas he tumbled across the gravel trap.

De Puniet had been enjoying thefinest season of his MotoGP careerso far, holding fifth in the champion-ship prior to the Sachsenring. He hadput his hitherto erratic reputation be-hind him to finish every previous2010 race in the top 10, with five topsix finishes out of seven rounds.

Pedrosabeats Lorenzoin Germany

Germany - Dani Pedrosa beat Jorge Lorenzo to victory in a restarted German Grand Prix, whileValentino Rossi narrowly missed out on a podium finish on his return after a six-week layoff with abroken leg. Honda rider Pedrosa overcame Yamaha’s Lorenzo following a long battle before pullingaway to take the Sachsenring win. Rossi (Yamaha) and Casey Stoner (Ducati) then provided the excite-ment in the closing laps with a stunning battle for third finally won by Stoner at the very last corner.

team’s frustration - having not gotback to the grid within the prescribedtime.

At the restart 20 minutes laterLorenzo lost out to Pedrosa again butmanaged to hang on to second un-der braking despite the pack startingto swamp him off the line.

He then passed Pedrosa on laptwo but once again the Honda stayedglued to the Yamaha’s tail. AlthoughPedrosa probed the inside repeatedlyon corner entries, Lorenzo alwaysmanaged to brake later - and whenPedrosa did go deeper into Turn 1on lap seven, his lead lasted less thana second before he slid wide andLorenzo nipped back through.

Now convinced that outbrakingwas not the answer, Pedrosa finallymade a pass stick next time around, drafting Lorenzo on the pits straightand getting past the Yamaha beforethe braking area. This time there wasno way back for Lorenzo, who couldonly watch the Honda inch awayfrom him for the rest of the race asPedrosa went on to claim his secondwin of 2010.

Not far behind, Rossi and Stonerspent the second part in the race in

an enormous battle for third place, once they had shaken off fast-start-ers Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden.Riding as if his broken leg had neverhappened, Rossi gave it everythingto try and make the podium, withthe pair swapping places eight timesbefore Stoner finally grabbed thirdat the very last corner of the race.

Dovizioso overcame MarcoSimoncelli (Gresini Honda) andHayden - who had flown forwardfrom 15th on the original grid - towin a big tussle for fifth, with BenSpies (Tech 3 Yamaha) beating Hec-tor Barbera to eighth. The AsparDucati rider had blasted throughfrom his career-best sixth on thegrid to third at the first start, beforegradually slipping back.

Marco Melandri completed thetop 10 for Gresini Honda, withLoris Capirossi (Suzuki) and re-turnee Alex de Angelis (InterwettenHonda) the remaining finishers.Colin Edwards crashed his Tech 3Yamaha while running near theback in the first part of the race, andMika Kallio (Pramac Ducati) hadan accident at the first corner of therestart.
