In 2011, Denpasar Municipality will conduct a revitalization program again to traditional mar-kets within the city. It is undertaken following the revitalization of traditional market that hadbeen carried out to Sindhu Market in Sanur. Six traditional markets revitalized next year consistof the Panjer Market, Petapian Market, Sidakarya Market, Penatih Market, Tulangampian Mar-ket and Agung Market.

“Revitalization program to tradi-tional market is performed in an ef-fort to organize the market into ahealthy and fresh market,” said theSecretary of Denpasar Municipal-ity, Anak Agung Ngurah Rai Iswara,Monday (Dec 20).

He added the revitalization oftraditional markets posed the pro-gram of central government throughthe Ministry of Commerce. “Wetruly appreciate this revitalizationprogram positively because with theprevious program the traditionalmarkets seemed shabby. However, with a new touch they will lookmore healthy and turn to fresh mar-kets,” he said.

Though the market revitalizationprogram denoted the program ofcentral government, Denpasar Mu-nicipality had also allocated a bud-get to synergize the program.

“We’ve allocated funds for themarket revitalization in 2011,” hesaid while explaining that so far thetraditional markets revitalized hadreached six units. They comprisedthe Sindhu Market, Renon Market,Panjer Market, Tapean Market andthe Agung Market.

“With the revitalization under-taken, the market will look fresh andhealthy in terms of the arrangementand sanitation,” he said.

According to Rai Iswara, by themeasure taken residents who wouldlike to go to the market would notfeel uncomfortable, because thecondition had been clean. “We hopethe traders in those markets to al-ways maintain the sanitation of theirenvironment. With such an act, itwill kindle a better attraction forresidents to do shopping in thosemarkets,” he said.

He pointed out the Sindhu Mar-ket in Sanur. After the revitalization, the market located right in themiddle of tourist sanctuary becameone of the attractions for touristsvisiting and shopping in the mar-kets.

“This proves that tourists com-ing to Bali did not only enjoy theattractions of the sublime art andculture, but they also want to knowhow people conduct transactions intraditional markets,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of theSanur Development Foundation IdaBagus Sidharta Putra said in the re-vitalization of the Sindhu Marketowned by Sanur Village his partyallocated a fund reaching IDR 4 bil-lion. “Such a fund is used for themarket arrangement, among others,to establish a two-story shop andstall for traders,” he said. Gajah Mada areaDenpasar (Bali Post)—

The arrangement ofJalan Gajah Mada into aheritage area has beenstarted by Denpasar CityGovernment since severalyears ago. After supportedby Balapraja and DenpasarCustomary Village, thearea arrangement obtainedtotal support as well fromthe Denpasar House. Thearrangement is begun fromthe parking service, traffic, condition of Badung Mar-ket, buffer zone, bothphysically and non-physi-cally.

“In principle, we agreewith the Denpasar Munici-pality to arrange the areaof Jalan Gajah Mada inharmony with the comple-tion of the central parkinglot in the courtyard ofBadung Market. On-ve-hicle traders would be re-located to Gunung AgungMarket (former cargo ter-

minal) that will be renovated in 2011,” said Chairman of Commission Cof Denpasar House, Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa and Chairman of Com-mission B, Eko Supriyadi, in their office on Monday (Dec 20).

Eko Supriyadi said the completion of central parking lot in the court-yard of Badung Market was expected to be a milestone of collective spiritin realizing the aspiration of Denpasar City creating a heritage area. Sofar, the Commission B as well as the factions existing in the DenpasarHouse having a certain attitude did not necessarily mean to eliminate thecomponents existing in the area of Jalan Gajah Mada. The componentsincluded the on-vehicle traders, courtyard traders and other componentsof society such as Balapraja.

In principle, the legislator of the Indonesian Democratic Party ofStruggle (PDI-P) said that central parking was earmarked for the area park-ing located in the Badung Market. In the future, the central parking wouldbe only for parking in accordance with the detailed engineering design(DED) and real function. Accordingly, the on-vehicle traders and court-yard traders should be regulated gradually to maintain the conducivenessof the region. “We do hope all components to realize this matter for thecommon good and future of Denpasar,” said Eko.

Meanwhile, Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa added that Denpasar Houseplanned to develop a buffer market in the former cargo terminal on JalanGunung Agung. With the buffer zone for the Badung Market, there wouldbe measures where the current heavy load of Badung Market could bealleviated, so the development of Gajah Mada Heritage would be maxi-mal. “We plan the on-vehicle traders will be relocated to Gunung AgungMarket,” he said.

As has been known, the plan of Denpasar Municipality to arrange thearea of Jalan Gajah Mada has started long ago. Commenced by the demo-lition of eight stores in front of Badung Market, it was then resumed withthe dismantling of tens of stores in the east of Desa/Puseh Temple ofDenpasar. However, many traders remained to carry out their activity thererecently. As a result, the arrangement of Jalan Gajah Mada area turnedunclear. Today, the plan is re-finalized with the plans to discipline thetraders in the area. (kmb12)

Mangupura (Bali Post)-The booming non residents in tourist area Kuta, Badung have

competed with local residents in finding jobs. Until October 2010,the 17,52 km² area has been filled by more than 9000 non resi-dents which narrows job opportunities for locals.

Head of Kuta Village, WayanDariana, last Monday (20/12)stated the non residents havereached 90 percent of the total resi-dents in Kuta working in touristservices such as hotels, restaurants, bars and tourism bureaus and domi-nantly from East Java includingBanyuwangi, “The non residents’existence in Kuta now felt to havecompeted with locals in getting ajob. Yet this can be anticipatedthrough disciplining uncontrollableresidents.”

The tourist services in Kuta havemanaged to produce a quite hugeRegional Real Income (PAD) for theeconomy sector also as a sector thatcan increase the people’s prosper-ity. Yet this tourism sector that haserased unemployment now chasedby non residents, “The number ofKuta residents until now reached12.249 people within 3.379 families. Most of them works as tourist work-

ers, art shop, restaurant, bar andother businesses owners.”

I Nyoman Rutha Ady, SH, aBadung public figure admitted thenegative impact has been happeningand yet to him these non residents arenot competitors, they are motivatorsto the locals, “Because of an elevatedsocial life, many locals are picky onfinding jobs. They tend to choosemore beneficial works in five starshotels rather than rough works.”

Rutha Ady also explained thenon residents in Kuta almost tookover the informal sectors such as es-sential traders like food. This canbe seen that traditional markets tendto have fewer sellers during Eid AlFitri and Christmas holidays, “Andyet during Galungan Day the mar-ket activity is crowded. This showsthat locals have left that professionwhile non residents want to workwhatever it is as long as there areresults.” (par)

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast – TheU.N. Security Council extendedits peacekeeping mission in IvoryCoast on Monday, hours after theUnited Nations’ top envoy in theWest African country said armedmen had been threatening staff intheir homes.

Incumbent President LaurentGbagbo’s refusal to concede de-feat in last month’s election andhis demand that peacekeepersleave have raised fears that U.N.personnel and other foreignerscould be targeted in violence.Over the weekend, masked gun-men opened fire on the U.N. basethere, though no one from the glo-bal body was harmed in the at-tack. Two military observers werewounded in another attack.

“Armed men have been com-ing to the personal houses ofUnited Nations employees, ask-ing them to leave and searchingtheir houses under the pretext oflooking for arms,” U.N. SpecialRepresentative Choi Young-jinsaid at a news conference inAbidjan.

A spokesman for Gbagbo inParis on Monday said he doubted

Gbagbo has ordered the U.N.peacekeeping force to leave IvoryCoast, claiming it is biased in fa-vor of opposition leader AlassaneOuattara. The U.N. and the inter-national community recognizeOuattara as the victor of lastmonth’s presidential runoff vote.

The U.N. has refused to leave, and the Security Council resolutionadopted unanimously Monday ex-tended the mandate of the 8,650-strong force until June 30, 2011.

“Members of the SecurityCouncil warn all stakeholders thatthey will be held accountable forattacks against civilians and peace-keepers and will be brought to jus-tice in accordance with interna-tional law and international hu-manitarian law,” said a statementread at the end of the meeting byU.S. Ambassador Susan Rice, thecurrent council president.

The council also extended thetemporary deployment of up to 500additional personnel until March31, and extends by four weeks thetemporary redeployment of threeinfantry companies and an aviationunit from Liberia to Ivory Coast.

Thailand to end state of emergency in BangkokDeputy Government spokesman

Supachai Jaisamut said the currentsecurity situation no longer justifiedthe strict control imposed duringApril riots by Red Shirt protesters, who camped for weeks in a zone for-tified by wooden stakes and tires inthe heart of Bangkok.

But the government has said itfeels that Thailand’s continuing po-litical turmoil justified another strict, though less powerful, security law.“The Cabinet has decided to lift theemergency decree ... and replace itwith the Internal Security Act,”

Supachai said.Occasional protests have contin-

ued since the army cracked down onthe Red Shirt encampment on May19. During the demonstration’s finalweeks, rolling clashes between troopsand Red Shirt protesters killed 90people and wounded more than 1,400.

A state of emergency was ini-tially declared in April in Bangkokafter demonstrators broke into theParliament building to press theirdemands for early elections. It waslater extended to cover almost one-third of the country’s 76 provincesand has gradually been lifted inmost locations except Bangkok andthree surrounding provinces. A stateof emergency allows the govern-ment to impose sweeping restric-tions on civil liberties.

It allows authorities to declare cur-fews, prohibit public gatherings, cen-sor and ban publications and detainsuspects without charge for up to 30days. Government officials actingunder the decree cannot be investi-gated for wrongdoing or brought tocourt. Critics said the decree was se-lectively enforced and used to harassgovernment opponents.

The Internal Security Act allowsauthorities to hold suspects withoutcharge for up to seven days. It alsoallows for curfews and restrictionson freedom of movement in situa-tions deemed harmful to nationalsecurity.

Denpasar needs 1,600additional hotel roomsBali Post

DENPASAR - The occupancy rate of most star and budgethotel rooms in Bali toward the celebration of Christmas andNew Year seemed to have reached its peak, without exceptionfor the tourist resort of Denpasar. Until the celebration, the re-gion offering city tour required 1,600 additional rooms.

Head of Denpasar Government Tourism Office, I Putu Budiasa, said thatuntil the yearend celebration, hotels in Denpasar experiencing 20-30 percentover-booking. Meanwhile, at the moment it had been only available aroundeight thousand rooms. “Therefore, when over-booking occurs we have the op-portunity to make 1,600 more rooms,” he said.

According to him, the over-booking ensued in nearly all star and budgethotels in the city of Denpasar and Sanur tourist resort. Allegedly, this surge wasdue to traffic congestion occurring in a number of tourist resorts in Bali havingan impact on the convenience of tourists.

“Because of traffic jam, tourists left those places. Meanwhile, position ofDenpasar City is very strategic for them. For example, it is shored up by thegrowing of city hotel exceeding one hundred percent,” he said.

It was described that the total number of star hotels in Denpasar was 25 hotelswith a capacity of 3,300 rooms. Meanwhile, the budget hotel was recorded toreach 187 hotels with a total of about five thousand room.

“We are also asked for help by people in Jakarta who have difficulty in look-ing for rooms. But, we do not want to take risk, because until today the hoteloccupancy had been already almost full. Indeed, this trend occurs through theyears,” he said.

Previously, Denpasar Government Tourism Office asked the Provincial Gov-ernment to perform in-depth review in relation to the plan of including the hotelsin the negative list of investment (DNI). On the other side, Denpasar remainedto require additional hotel rooms.

According to him, regencies in Bali had a different potential. One of themwas Denpasar having the potential of cultural tourism development that shouldbe supported by means of accommodation in adequate amounts.

“Bali stays to require additional hotel rooms. When Bali Provincial Govern-ment managed to include hotels in the negative list of investment, it will cer-tainly hamper the entry of investors in the development of hotel sector, particu-larly in Denpasar,” he said.

Over-booking condition happening in Denpasar showed the demand of hotelrooms in Denpasar surpassed the capacity of the existing hotel rooms. On thataccount, the city with cultural vision extremely entailed an investment in thehotel rooms but it was definitely in a limited scale. (par)

The decoration ofthe mask is not only functioned as es-thetic-decorative, but more for magi-cal symbolism for the ancestors’ sym-bol of magic power which bring pros-perity and protect the family or thesociety from any danger. Anotherdecoration which has the magicalsymbolism is the decoration of oc-tagonal star on the hit zone, borderdesign, feather, and so on.

TOKYO – The Bank of Japan kept monetary policy on hold on Tuesdaybut warned of weakening factory output and business sentiment, assuringmarkets that it was focusing on downside risks to growth that may triggerfurther easing ahead.

The decision to stand pat on policy was widely expected as the centralbank likely felt no imminent need to top up its new asset buying scheme, with Tokyo stock prices on the rise and the yen well off a 15-year high hitagainst the dollar last month.

But with the outlook murky, BOJ policymakers are expected to havescrutinized various risks to the economy that may hurt business morale, which is seen worsening in the coming three months.

The BOJ kept its economic assessment unchanged but revised down itsview on output, saying it had declined slightly. The bank also warned thatbusiness sentiment has been “somewhat weak,” signaling that it saw itslatest tankan survey as offering negative signals for the economy.

Markets are on the lookout for what Governor Masaaki Shirakawa hasto say about recent rises in Japanese bond yields, which add to the hard-ships facing the frail economy.

“No change doesn’t mean no message. The BOJ is saying they remaincautious despite the market being more optimistic. I think the BOJ is tryingto calm the JGB market by saying recovery is still uncertain,” said TakujiOkubo, chief economist at Societe Generale Securities.

“The biggest uncertainty is in the United States. If the market decidesthat the Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing is a mirage, the yen wouldrise and stocks would tank. That could prompt the BOJ to increase assetpurchases, maybe to 7.5 or 10 trillion yen ($90-120 billion).”

The latest settlement, on top ofa $16.4 million fine Toyota paidearlier in a related investigation, brings the total penalties levied onthe company to $48.8 million. Itcaps a difficult year for the world’sNo. 1 automaker, which recalledmore than 11 million vehicles glo-bally since the fall of 2009 as itscrambled to protect its reputationfor safety and reliability.

Toyota’s board of directorsagreed to pay the fines on Tues-day at the company’s board meet-ing in Japan, according to an of-ficial familiar with the case, andthe company said it agreed to thepenalties without admitting to anyviolations of U.S. laws. WASHINGTON – Toyota Motor Corp. has agreed to pay the government a record $32.4million in additional fines to settle an investigation into its handling of two recalls at theheart of its safety crisis.

ahead of the formal announcement.Steve St. Angelo, Toyota’s

chief quality officer for NorthAmerica, said in a statement thatthe company has “worked veryhard over the past year to putthese issues behind us and set anew standard of responsiveness toour customers. These agreementsare an opportunity to turn the pageto an even more constructive re-lationship with NHTSA (NationalHighway Traffic Safety Adminis-tration).”

He said Toyota was grateful toits customers for “their confi-dence in the quality and reliabil-ity of our vehicles.”

In April, Toyota agreed to paythe maximum fine allowed underlaw for a single case — $16.4 mil-lion — for failing to promptlyalert U.S. regulators to safetyproblems over sticking accelera-tor pedals. Under federal law, automakers must notify NHTSAwithin five days of determiningthat a safety defect exists andpromptly conduct a recall.

At the time, Toyota denied at-tempting to hide a safety defectand said it agreed to the penaltyto avoid a lengthy legal battle

with the government.Jesse Toprak, vice president of

industry trends and insight atTrueCar, an automotive consultingfirm in Santa Monica, Calif., saidToyota was trying to put its recallsbehind i t at a t ime when thecompany’s U.S. sales have beenflat while many rivals have takenadvantage of a recovering autolandscape. But he said the rebuild-ing of the trust would take time.

The latest fines involve twoseparate safety problems affectingcertain Toyota passenger cars andtrucks.

The first case deals with recallsin 2009 and 2010 of about 5 mil-lion Toyota and Lexus vehicleswith gas pedals that could becomeentrapped in floor mats. Toyota hadrecalled 55,000 all-weather floormats in 2007 to address pedal en-trapment, but the government saidits investigation found that simplyremoving the floor mats was insuf-ficient.

Before Toyota’s recall crisis, thelargest automaker fine was $1 mil-lion paid by General Motors in2004 for a slow response to a re-call of nearly 600,000 vehicles withfaulty windshield wipers.

“The Story of Island Records”(Universe), edited by SuzetteNewman and Chris Salewicz, is acolorful tribute not just to BobMarley and the Caribbean sound hehelped popularize, but to the earlyhistory of alternative rock and newwave.

Case in point: Blackwell signedU2 in 1980, but he wasn’t all thatimpressed with Bono and his ragtagIrish crew when he first saw themperform at a London pub. “I didn’tlove the music,” said Blackwell dur-ing an interview with NPR’s “Week-end Edition” on Saturday. “It was alittle rinky-dink, but I believed inthem.”

Michael Bolton sings for the saints in Assisimoved by his story,” he said. WithGiotto’s awe-inspiring frescoes ofthe scenes in the life of St. Francison both sides of him, Bolton sang“The Prayer,” “O Holy Night,” andLeonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” forthe concert that will be broadcast onEurovision on Dec 25.

The Umbrian hill town where StFrancis lived 800 years ago is a longway from New Haven, Connecticut, where Bolton was born into a familyof Russian Jewish immigrants 57years ago.

“There is something special about

this place. I have performed inchurches and cathedrals and holy sitesbut there is something about being inthe presence of everything that hasbeen inspired by St Francis,” he said.

“So, you are cognizant of thiswhile you are learning your changesand your notes and everything else, but before it was time to sing, I keptfinding myself getting very quiet, very tranquil and very respectful ofwhere I am,” he said.

But Bolton, who began his careeras a hard rocker in the 1970s and hassince delved into many other musi-

cal styles and ventures that have puthim in the spotlight — most recentlyin the 11th edition of Dancing withthe Stars — said he had no troublemelting into the background in aplace like Assisi.

“When you’re doing Christiansongs ... there is a very differentfocus that you have to deliver. As asinger it is one of the very few timesthat you have to get out of the way.You have to hit the notes, but be-come a servant and it reminds youthat St Francis was all about serviceto humanity,” he said.

NEW YORK – To mark the 50th anniversary of Island Records, founder and music industry icon Chris Blackwell has taken part in abook tracing the label’s formative years and beyond.

An extended version of the in-terview appears on NPR’s TheRecord blog, where Blackwell be-moans the loss of a label’s musicalidentity.

“Record labels now (don’t) meanwhat they used to be to me when Iwas a fan,” he said. “For example... (jazz label) Blue Note Recordswas a guarantee of quality. Theysigned great musicians, and theyrecorded them absolutely brilliantly.Atlantic was a label that I loved;they had the best R&B music. KingRecords I loved; they had JamesBrown. There was a certain kind ofidentity with each label. That canhappen when you’re independent.

When it’s a major company, theycan’t do that in the same way. It’schanged really a great deal, becausealso people don’t even see a label. Itused to be something where, youknow, you saw that Motown recordspinning around; there was a kind ofexcitement about it. You knew whatyou were going to get, that Motownsound. That doesn’t exist now.”

His advice for new artists tryingto break? Be patient and own yourwork. “They can sell their music;they can market themselves on theWeb. Takes a long time, because it’ssort of going bit by bit, but they canpromote their concerts, and they cangather e-mail addresses or Facebookpages ... and grow like that,” he said.“(They can) have a very successfulcareer and own their own masters. They don’t need to give that up to arecord label, which happened in theold days.”

BERLIN – A dog in Germany has given birth to 17 puppies, leaving their owner thrilled but fatiguedafter having to feed them with a bottle for several weeks because their mother couldn’t cope with thedemand. Owner Ramona Wegemann said Monday she barely slept for more than a couple of minuteswithout interruption during about four weeks in an “exhausting” struggle to make sure all of the purebredRhodesian Ridgeback puppies would survive.

uncommon for the dog’s breed,Wegemann said.

“The birth of the puppies wasvery special. All puppies were bornnaturally, no cesarean was neces-sary,” she added. It took Etana a full26 hours to give birth to all of thepuppies — and Wegemann was asbaffled as amazed.

But caring for 17 puppies turnedout to be a full-time job: Wegemannput her work as an independent ani-mal psychiatrist on a hold and herhusband took as much vacation ashe could.

Their lives have been turned up-side down by the puppies, and theirliving room is now occupied by agiant box that houses the puppies. But even Wegemann still strugglesto recognize them: The females pup-

pies are called Bahati, Binta, Bahya,Bashima, Batouuli, Binki, Bora, Bisaand the male ones are Baakir, Banjoku,Belay, Bruk, Bundu, Bayo, Bukekayo,Biton and Bulus.

Wegemann gave them all Africannames because the Rhodesian Ridge-back is an African hunting dog.Wegeman and her husband now planto give most of the puppies away.

A price of ?800 ($1,050) perpuppy would only cover the expensesfor the veterinary, vaccinations, foodand the mandatory paperwork,Wegemann said. She hopes to getabout ?1,000 ($1,315) per dog, butsaid they would only give them tofamilies with children, not breeders.Four of the puppies have been sold, two more are already paid for and willleave their siblings shortly.

PARIS – Cycling in 2010 was struck by a series of crises that threatenedto wipe out most of its efforts to fight doping, with the sport’s two biggestnames involved in scandals.

Seven-times Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong was embroiledin a U.S. federal investigation triggered by former team mate and disgraced2006 champion Floyd Landis’s allegations, while three-times winner AlbertoContador failed a test for the banned anabolic agent Clenbuterol.

The biological passport, a tool developed by the International CyclingUnion (UCI) to help the fight against doping, showed its limitations whenItalian Franco Pellizotti was eventually cleared to race even though his datasuggested he had tampered with his blood.

Vuelta runner-up Ezequiel Mosquera failed a dope test, prompting UCIpresident Pat McQuaid to say that Spain was not doing enough to tackle thedoping problem.Elite cycling has been growing strongly in the United States, with RadioShack, Garmin, HTC-High Road and BMC Racing four of 18elite outfits for the 2011 season, but the sport’s officials fear the scandalscould drive away sponsors. “With cycling’s degraded image because of dop-ing and the financial crisis, it’s getting more and more difficult. The future isvery uncertain,” Caisse d’Epargne team manager Francis Lafargue toldReuters during the Tour.

Sochi is gearing up for a majorsporting double after it signed aseven-year deal to host the RussianGrand Prix earlier this year. And al-though the logistics of holding theOlympics and a grand prix are com-plicated, the city’s mayor AnatolyPakhomov insists that preparationsare well on course for the F1 event.

NICO Rosberg has full confi-dence that Mercedes GP has all itneeds to deliver at the top in For-mula 1 - as it seeks to bounce backfrom a disappointing 2010 cam-paign. The Brackley-based outfithad gone into the season hoping tofight for world championship glory, but its car did not live up to expec-tations and the team’s best resultswere podium finishes.

Although some of the form wasexplained by the lack of resourcesthe team could put into its car, onthe back of its efforts as Brawn GPto win the 2009 title, Rosberg thinksthat organisational changes were themain area where improvements hadto be made.

And that is why he is bullish thatMercedes GP can make the neces-sary tweaks to make good progress.“We were just not the best team inthe way that the factory is set-up andeverything,” Rosberg said in an ex-clusive interview withAUTOSPORT.

“But I think we have the bestpeople, starting off with Ross, so Ihave a lot of confidence that we’ll

Rosberg confident of stronger 2011get there. It’s just that Ross’s pro-cess hasn’t finished yet, and he’slearning along the way also, I think.

“He probably learned a lot lastyear - and especially this year –about where the weaknesses are inthe organisation. So he’s still in theprocess of making a lot of changesand getting the best out of every in-dividual, getting the people to worktogether well, things like that.

“There’s been a lot of change inthe team. The last three years it’sbeen a huge rollercoaster. It’s justgoing to take some time to get it towork as everybody wants.”

Despite his confidence thatMercedes GP can improve, Rosberghas drawn short of predicting howquick such a step forward can bemade.

“Ross is making changes all thetime, so yes, pieces are falling intoplace. But it’s difficult for me tojudge how quickly and how effi-ciently, because I’m not really in-side. It’s still in the recovery period.

“But it’s been a great experiencefor me, and I look forward to thecoming years also. Driving a

Mercedes is brilliant. I believe in thepeople that work here, I believe inthe Brackley people, and I see it asa long term thing.”

Russian GP boss says track on scheduleRUSSIAN Grand Prix chiefs are confident that their inaugu-

ral Formula 1 race in Sochi in 2014 in well on course to run onschedule - despite complications caused by the city hosting thewinter Olympics earlier that year.

“There is every intention to en-sure that the F1 race will go aheadas planned in 2014,” Pakhomov wasquoted as saying in an interview withReuters.

“The specific requirements ofmanaging the two events together isbeing studied carefully at present asthe committee working to oversee

the successful implementation ofthe Olympics becomes fully inte-grated with the committee being setup to orchestrate the F1 race whichis still in its formative stage. “How-ever, I don’t foresee any slippage ofthe race into 2015 being necessary.”

Pakhomov said he expected theF1 track to be mostly finished in2013, with the finishing touches putin place once the Olympics havebeen completed.

“Of course there are some morespecific features that will need to be

added upon the completion of theOlympic Games such as run-off ar-eas, catch fencing etc,” he said.

“But we foresee the base require-ments of the track being completedapproximately one year prior to thefirst race being held.”

Andrey Kraynik, a senior execu-tive of Olympic and Grand Prixsponsor MegaFon, told Reuters thatthe track would become a hit withfans and drivers.

“When we first invited (F1 trackdesigner Hermann) Tilke down to see

Sochi in 2009 we stressed the impor-tance of ensuring the track design gotthe balance right,” he told Reuters.

“The track will be a classic trackwith an emphasis on good overtak-ing opportunities, no gimmicks. Itwill have a mix of high speed cor-ners, long straights and hairpins.

“On the one hand you will havethe mountains as a backdrop and acity street-track feel at the sametime. It will come to be loved by thefans like Montreal, and be challeng-ing for the drivers like Monaco.”
