The events have not only focused on constructive discussions and inspiring lectures but

also gave an opportunity to the students to show their hidden talents or to have sheer fun

in some informal events A couple of new ideas were taken up this year in the journey of

MESA events and it is certainly exciting to see that the organizing team was able to

pursue those ideas and implement them successfully We identified our goals set aside time

to achieve them Our work ethic and achievements at NMIET are solid - they are the

collective results of each and every one here At this unique institution we hone the

academic skills finetune the aesthetic senses and work towards building a Holistic culture

that values the individuality of each student

Although the events were mainly a team effort by the MESA members the responsibility

of leading the events were shared by many members We personally feel that such

participatory management should always be encouraged Besides giving the feeling of

ownership to more number of students it also reduces the work load on few students who

may have to compromise with their studies otherwise The students have always been given

freedom of working in their own style and exercising new ideas This phenomenon may lead

to few compromises here and there however it helps the students towards building their

confidence We received great appreciation and constructive suggestions as well as

uncomforting comments over the year and enjoyed equally all of them We must appreciate

the support and guidance provided by Staff during the tenure of this MESA team

When drivers hit the

brake pedal today their foot

moves a piston rod which is linked

to the brake booster and the master

brake cylinder Depending on the

pedal force the master brake

cylinder builds up the appropriate

amount of pressure in the brake

lines which - in a tried and tested

interaction of mechanics and

hydraulics -

then presses the brake pads

against the brake discs via the

wheel cylinder By contrast

in the Mercedes-Benz

Sensotronic brake The brake

booster will not be needed in

future either Instead sensors

gauge the pressure inside the

master brake cylinder as well

as the speed with which the

brake pedal is operated and

pass these data to the SBC

computer in the form of

electric impulses To provide

the driver with the familiar

brake feel engineers have

developed a special simulator

which is linked to the tandem

master cylinder and which

moves the pedal using spring

force and hydraulics In other

words during braking the

actuation unit is completely

disconnected from the rest of

the system and serves the sole

purpose of recording any

given brake command Only

in the event of a major fault

or power failure does SBC

automatically use the services

of the tandem master cylinder

and instantly establishes a

direct hydraulic link between

the brake pedal and the front

wheel brakes in order to

decelerate the car safely The

central control unit under the

bonnet is the centrepiece of the

electrohydraulic brake This is

where the interdisciplinary

electronics provides its greatest

benefits - the microcomputer

software sensors valves and

electric pump work together

and allow totally novel highly

dynamic brake management In

addition to the data relating to

the brake pedal actuation the

SBC computer also receives

the sensor signals from the

other electronic assistance

systems For example the anti-

lock braking system (ABS)

provides information about

wheel speed while Electronic

Stability Program (ESP) makes

available the data from its

steering angle turning rate and

transverse acceleration sensors

The transmission control unit

finally uses the data highway to

communicate the current

driving rangeThe result of

these highly complex

calculations is rapid brake

commands which ensure

optimum deceleration and

driving stability as appropriate

to the particular driving

scenario What makes the

system even more sophisticated

is the fact that SBC calculates

thebrake force separately for

each wheel Talking about the

of the SBC pedal from the rest of the brake

system and the proportional pressure control

using mechatronics serve to increase brake

comfort ndash particularly during sharp

deceleration or when the antilock braking

system is operational The usual vibration of

the brake pedal when ABS sets in does not

occur which Mercedes engineers have found

is not only a comfort feature of the new

system but also offers measurable safety

benefits

Their research in DaimlerChryslerrsquos Berlin

driving simulator has revealed that almost two

thirds of all drivers are started

when ABS pulsation sets in they do not

increase the brake force further and are even

prone to taking their foot off the brake pedal

for a short while therebylengthening the

stopping distance of their vehicle ndash in the

driving simulator by an average of 210 metrersquos

- 7 feet - during ABS braking from 60 kmh -

37 MPH - on a snow-covered road surface

Mechatronics ndash a new term is gaining

popularity within the automotive industry and

is rapidly developing into the catchword of a

quiet technological revolution which in many

fields stands century-old principles on their

head Mechatronics brings together two

disciplines which in many cases were thought

to be irreconcilable namely mechanics and

electronics Hence automobile functions

which hitherto worked purely mechanically

and partly with hydraulic assistance will in

future be controlled by high-performance

microcomputers and electronically

controllable actuators These either replace

the conventional mechanical components or

else enhance their function The

mechatronicinterplay therefore opens up

hitherto inconceivable possibilities to furtherraise the safety and

comfort levels of

modern passenger

cars For example

it was only possible

through

mechatronics that

an electronically

controlled

suspension system

which instantly

adapts to prevailing

conditions whendriving off braking or

cornering thus

providing a totally new

driving experience

Hyperloop is a completely new mode of

fastest transportation Hyperloop is firstly

proposed by Elon musk and a team of engineer

from Tesla Motors and the Space Exploration

Technologies Corporation in August 2013 The

concept of hyperloop includes travelling people

from one place to another place in a capsule

which is propelling at a very high speed We can

also called hyperloop as a solar powered

transportation system and it is an alternative of

high speed train

The conventional modes of transportation of

people consists of four unique types and that are

rail road water and air These modes of

transport tend to be either relatively slow

expensive or a combination of both Hyperloop

is a new mode of transport

fast and inexpensive for people and goods

We are always dream to travel from one

place to another place within a blink of eye

and that dream was comes true with the

technology called as Hyperloop Technology

Basically hyperloop is magnetically levitated

train which runs inside a long tube or pipe It

consists of low pressure tube with capsule

that is transported at both low and high

speeds It is driven by linear induction motor

and compressor It includes 28 passenger

The Hyperloop is a hypothetical new

fast transport system between cities which

works by launching pods that carry people

through a very low air pressure tunnel The

Hyperloop reduces friction between the pods

and the tunnel by supporting the pod on a

cushion of air

The principle idea behind the

Hyperloop was simple and is just to reduce

the friction and air drag so as to get higher

velocity just like maglev trains

Technology is with the increase in population and

pollution there has been a thriving demand for a

technology that not only revolutionizes the world

with its speed but also keeps in mind the impact it

imparts to theenvironment

In July 2019 the Indian

Government gave the final nod

for construction of a

Hyperloop could be the cleanest fastest cheapest

and the latest means of transport

The development in this new venture is encouraged

by the very fact that it is open-source

More convenient

Immune to weather

Sustainably self-powering

Resistant to Earthquakes

Not disruptive to those along the route

Hyperloop train between

Mumbai and Pune While

several countries worldwide

have unveiled plans to build

this version of a high-speed

train for years India might take

the lead in doing so We take a

closer look at the project

If we are to make a

massive investment in a

new transportation system

then the return should by

rights be equally massive

In two wheeler there is a tilting

characteristics that allows the vehicle to have

substantial leaning properties But that does not

require complex linkages or control system to

operate effective

A preferably four wheeled vehicle do not

having tilting characteristics but quad bike is a

similar to the two wheeler which have a four

wheels We are designing this

mechanism in order to increase the safety

and stability of the vehicle at high speeds

This is Four wheel leaning

suspension bike which widely used for

comfort zones the name itself indicate that

which is used for human comfort and which

is also used for safety purpose

Everybody who rides a two wheeler leans

That is because a vehicle in a turn

experiences inertia that is proportional to the

momentum of the vehicle This is very

similar to the centrifugal effect that a body in

a circular motion experiences

ie the body in the

circular motion tends

to develop a

centrifugal force

pushing it outwards

from the centre of the

circular path the

force being

proportional to the

momentum of the

body Similarly the

vehicle in a turn

experiences a

centrifugal force

which tends to push the vehicle away from the

turn tangentially When the biker turns the

torque at the bikersquos center of gravity acting

outwards the curve This will cause the bike

and the rider to tip over When the biker leans

inwards the curve as he turns there will be an

inward torque due to gravity

By incorporating this principle to a quad

bike we arrived at a mechanism which is

known as ldquoLEANING SUSPENSION

MECHANISMrdquo This mechanism allows the

rider to lean to a particular angle so that

effective negotiation of curves will be possible

Turning radius is reduced on the application of

this suspension mechanism Also it stabilise the

whole vehicle due to lowering the centre of

gravity

This torque depending on the angle of lean

will balance the outward torque created by the

centrifugal force As far as the biker balances

the two torques throughout the curve he will

make a proper and stable turn

Advantages

1 The advantage of solid axles is considered

the camber angle which is not affected by

rolling of the vehicle body

2 produce little camber in cornering except

for that which arises from slightly greater

compression of the tires on the outside of

the turn

3 Inertia losses are less

1 Initial cost is high

2 Maintenance cost is more

working

Vibration analysis of a beam is an

important and peculiar subject of study in

mechanical engineering All real physical

structures when subjected to loads or natural

frequencies displacements behave dynamically

This paper presents the numerical results of

Vibration analysis of a cantilever beam with

load at the tip were carried out in NASTRAN

for different materials

The results were compared and it was found that

for the same cross-section and for configurations

(ie cantilever) structural steel gives higher

natural frequencies

A simple cantilever beam was used for

analysis The dimensions of the beam were

550 x 50 x 5 mm Modal analysis was carried

out for four different materials of the beam ie

Structural steel Aluminium alloy Copper

alloy and Gray cast iron The material

properties of the materials are given in Table I

Modal analysis is used to determine the mode

shapes and natural frequencies of a machine or

a structure It is the most basic form of

dynamic analysis The output of modal

analysis can further be used to carry out a

more detailed dynamic analysis

working fluid and cause it to have desired

number amp closely spaced surface that are

aligned parallel to the resonator tube The heat

occurs between the walls of cylinder and gas

since the majority of molecule are for frome

walls of chamber The gas particles Cannot be

exchange the heat with wall-and oscillate place

causing no net temperature difference The

purpose of stock to provide medium Then heat

exchanger is used to transfer heat energy from

one fluid to another

Wingtips also called as Winglets The name

itself suggest that the mechanical linkage or

device attached at the tip of the wing of

airplane is known as winglet

As its said that ldquoNeed is the Mother of

Inventionrdquo there was a huge need of

increasing fuel efficiency of planes and

increase its stability in the Air A plane is

directed upward due to lift force acting on it

This lift force is generated because of Low

Pressure above the wing and high pressure

below the wing But this phenomenon acts at

the tips of the wings too means that high

pressurised air was tending to go above the

wing which there itself generated wing tip

vortices and those vortices were going on

increasing at the backward of the plane It

decreases the stability of wing and increases

induced drag which decreases the fuel

efficiency too

In 1988 Boieng B-747-400 was first airliner

to fly with winglet After many test across

various test platforms of various companies In

2009 Airbus arrived with Sharklets

(Winglets) on new A320 model Hence a new

era of Winglets started across the globe

which gave increased Fuel efficiency from

35 to 11(figures may change) And

hence many types of winglets were designed

and used at huge extent

Automatic Transmission (AT) Dual-Clutch

Transmission (DCT) and Continuous Variable

Transmission (CVT) because they largely account

for the development of transmission technology in

the past 20 years and have gradually replaced MT

and AMT in passenger cars With pressing

demands to reduce emissions and improve fuel

economy automotive transmissions have evolved

over the past 20 years while rapidly progressing

toward electrification to meet stringent

legislations pushing for CO2 reduction ATs

DCTs and CVTs are examples of transmission

electrification and are normally realized by

adding a hybrid module or replacing the

launching element with a hybrid module Such

add-on solutions have excellent inheritance

because most parts can be shared between

conventional transmissions and hybrid

transmissions which facilitates modular design

and manufacture In contrast to add-

on solutions dedicated hybrid

transmissions (DHTs) are

completely newly developed for

HEVs and PHEVs The complexity

of a mechanical system is generally

lower than that of conventional

multispeed transmissions Along

with electrical advancement one of

the main focus on road accidentprevention lies in decreasing driver fatigue and

work intensity particularly on route vehicles in

the urban cycle This decrease is achieved due to

vehicle driving simplification and reduction of

driverrsquos physical load allowing concentrating on

road conditions It results in the enhancement of

the traffic safety and decrease of the degree of

influence of driverrsquos qualification and personal

characteristics on the operational indices of a

vehicle In turn driver fatigue and work intensity

depend largely on transmission unit design and

first of all on gearboxes used in vehicles Thus a

driver of a bus equipped with the mechanical gear

with manual shifting needs to shift a gearbox

lever about 1500ndash2000 per a shift releasing

clutch at each shifting which cannot but

negatively influence the traffic safety

automotive transmission for the ICE

Transmission Layout Synthesis A growing

number of automakers are introducing these

novel multi-speed transmissions to their

vehicles as a part of a continuing effort to

improve the drivability and fuel economy of

their vehicles On the one hand the highest gear

ratio has been decreased to improve fuel

economy when a vehicle is cruising On the

other hand the lowest gear ratio has been

increased to improve drivability when a vehicle

is launching or creeping The increasing speed

number allows for smaller gear steps that

provide comfort and smooth shifts

Efficiency Improvement

Transmissions have tended to

have more speeds in recent years

because of legislative pressure

relating to CO2 reductions and

fuel economy However driving

simulations indicate that

increasing the speed number

beyond 10 will not improve the

fuel economy appreciably

Different optimization approaches have

therefore been investigated for mechanical and

hydraulic systems to improve transmission

efficiency

NVH Technology The noise and vibration

arising from automotive transmission are

transmitted to passengers through airborne and

structure borne paths and lead to discomfort

Hence the NVH problem in automotive

transmission affects the vehicle driving

comfort

Whining rattling clunking shifting and

bearing noises are the five main types of noise

in automotive transmission The noise in

automotive transmissions is transmitted to

passengers as airborne noise and structure-

borne noise is directly transmitted from the

excitation source or radiated through the gearbox

The structure-borne noise is generated by an

excitation source and transmitted to passengers

through the shafts bearings mountings and car

The biggest complaint of customers relating to ATs

and DCTs relates to the shift quality The control

of the shifting process is therefore important

Transmission manufacturers improve shift quality

through both hardware and software development

In terms of hardware development a directly

operating solenoid valve is used in novel ATs and

DCTs to improve the control accuracy In terms of

software development numerous studies have

investigated shifting strategies and control

technologies The shifts in ATs and DCTs are

clutch-to-clutch shifts without power interruption

During torque transference from the off-going

clutch to the on-coming clutch and speed

synchronization

from the current

gear to the target

gear drivers

expect a fast and

smooth transition

without drivetrain

jerking resulting

in a demand for a

high-quality shift

Over the past twodecades automotive transmissions have evolved

3D printing also known as additive

manufacturing is seen as the disruptive

technology that will bring a revolution in the

manufacturing sector After the patent behind the

key method of 3D printing expired in 2009 3D

printers have become more technologically

advanced and accessible 3D Printing has moved

well beyond rapid prototyping and is now capable

of producing conventional products like any other

manufacturing process Industries which are

using 3D printing not only include aerospace and

defense companies like Boeing and Lockheed

Martin but also dental devices manufacturers like

Invisalign

Wake Forest Institute For Regenerative

Medicine is using this technology to print

artificial heart valves and arteries which can help

us tackle the problem of not having sufficient

amounts of tissues to replace in patients Simple

household application parts to more complex

components like jet engines all are currently

being manufactured by 3D printing 3D printing

has given engineers the freedom to design

complex components as they donrsquot have to rely

on traditional manufacturing processes to build

them Design Processes like generative design

and topology optimization also relies a lot on

3D printing because of the complexity of the

part they produce

NASA is working on a 3D printer that can print

a part recycle it and use the recycled material

to print new parts again With 3D printing

engineers dont have to worry whether a sharp

corner is within the machining limit of a

milling machine Just as a cylindrical boring

machine facilitated industrial revolution 3D

what cannot be produced Industries dont have

to stockpile and spend a lot of money on

There are still many obstacles to be overcome

for 3D printing to go mainstream The cost of a

component made using injection molding

decreases drastically as more and more parts are

produced The same does not hold true for 3D

printing as a lot of time is taken for machining

one part This makes 3D printing costly

compared to other methods Fatigue life of a 3D

printed part is also less due to the amount

of imperfections in them Parts that come out of

a 3D printer need a lot of post processing which

again is time consuming

Problems like these need to be overcome with

the help of artificial intelligence for 3D printing

to go mainstream Once these issues are solved

this technique has power to transform the way

we design and manufacture products
