Abstract: Sandwich structures are a special type of composites made up of a low modulus core
sandwiched between two high modulus and elastic face sheets. This configuration of materials
provides a high stiffness to weight ratio but is prone to damage when subjected to low velocity impact
that can generate sub surface damages and lead to failure of the system. Hence, it is of high priority to
investigate ways to improve and optimize the damage resistance of sandwich panels under impact
scenario. Hence varying thickness configurations of sandwich panels of polyurethane foam core and
aluminum face sheets are selected and subjected to different velocities. The results are obtained
analytically in the form of time histories using mass-spring model and are further validated through
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and experimentation. The results show increase damage with the
increase of velocities on the face sheet as the dominating mode of failure while no delamination or
perforation is observed.
Keywords: Sandwich Panel, Damage resistance, Low velocity impact, Energy absorption,
Indentation
Specialized Tools: ABAQUS software was used to simulate the low velocity impact on sandwich
panels. The ODE involved in the analytical model was solved using MATLAB software. Gas gun
facility equipped with data acquisition system and high-definition camera was used to observe the
impact event.

Design & Development of a Low Cost Safety Valve for The Commercially Used Gas
Heaters in Pakistan
Muhammad Shehroze Malik, Muhammad Jawad Khalid
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology Islamabad
[email protected], [email protected]
Abstract: In Pakistan, every year a number of causalities are caused by the gas leakage through the
heaters due to load-shedding during the winter season. Locally manufactured gas heaters do not follow
any safety standards to automatically shut the gas valve in case of sudden variation in pressure
or gas supply from the main supply as this problem is growing with serious ratio in Pakistan. This
results in room filled with unburned gas thus causing the suffocation to humans as well as fire hazards
blunders. The aim of this project is to design and develop a low cost safety gas valve that can be
incorporated in these local heaters to shut the gas supply in the heater in case of any uneven or fluctuating
gas supply. The Objective to be achieved through the project is to decrease the number of casualties
caused by gas leakage and to make this project as cost effective and economical. In this way it will be
a contribution to the market.

Design and Performance Analysis of Rotor Blades of Turbo Molecular Pump
Under Dynamic Loading Conditions
Sahab Hafeez, Azhar Hussain
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology
[email protected], [email protected]
Abstract: Turbo Molecular Pump (TMP) performance is strongly linked to the rotational velocity of the
rotor blades. With the increasing of Rpm, rotor blades deflection starts to appear. To obtain the stable
performance of TMP at higher Rpm, its material quality and blade design needs to be optimized. So in order
to improve the performance and reduce the deformation, different materials are used and blade design has
been modified. The improved design of rotor blade is modeled in CAD software. The structural analysis is
performed in ANSYS workbench to analyze and check for structural integrity by using different materials.
It was observed that titanium has less deformation as compared to aluminum and structural steel. High cycle
fatigue of turbo molecular pump‘s blading is a significant design problem because fatigue failures can occur
as TMP rotates and hence resulting in formation and propagation of cracks due to the high stress region.
Fatigue failure result from a combination of different stresses, and material Imperfections. Stress-range
diagrams are used to quantify the allowable alternating stress amplitudes to avoid fatigue damage. Fatigue
analysis of rotor blades under different materials is discussed. Different materials like Titanium, aluminum
and structural steel is analyzed. These materials were analyzed for different Parameters like fatigue
sensitivity, factor of safety, fatigue life and von misses stresses. The analysis was done at 20,000 rpm using
Ansys workbench.

Design and Development of Structural Subsystem of a 3U CUBESAT
Junaid Arshad Awan, Saim Ali
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology
[email protected], [email protected]
Abstract: Considering the recent developments in the field of space vehicles in Pakistan and the
emphasis by the Ministry of Science and Technology for research and projects in this field were quite
enough motivation to take up a project related to space technology. In future, this project can be used as
an experience and basis knowledge to get in to further projects related to space technology. In this
project, we designed the structure of 3U CubeSat according to the needs of the project. The sustainability
of the structure during different loading conditions at different stages of the project was examined. After
assuring that the structure will stand all the loads, a prototype of the structure was fabricated. The design
of structure was the blend of recent designs used and the needs of our project. SOLIDWORKS design
software was used in this process. After the design was completed, the structure was provided in to
ANSYS for making the design structure run through all the conditions that a real structure would pass
through from launch to space. As soon as we had a design that would withstand these conditions, we
were ready for fabrication.
The software results were satisfying enough to the take the project one step ahead for the fabrication.
The simulations had to be carried out a number of times until a design was achieved which would sustain
the conditions as well as it was fabricable.

Design and Analysis of Composite Pressure Vessel
Mohammad Hamza, Hamza Yousuf Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology
[email protected], [email protected]
Abstract: Pressure Vessels are specially designed to contain gases and liquids at high pressure e.g.
tanks, boilers, LPG cylinders etc. The aim of the project is to design and analyze a Type1V Composite
pressure vessel which is a replacement to conventionally used steel pressure vessel. The Type 1V
pressure vessel consists of the plastic liner in which the LPG is stored which is wrapped over by the
composite material. The advantage of the design is that it has high strength to weight ratio and weight
reduction up to 70% can be achieved. The composite pressure vessel could not sustain high pressure if
the fibers are applied on the Liner properly. Hence, Netting analysis is performed analytically to
calculate the optimized ply angles. Experimentally, Filament Winding process is used to make a cylinder
in which fibers after passing through matrix are continuously wrapped over the Liner at different
orientations. Initially, the analytical modelling of composite pressure vessel will be performed which
will be then verified by experimentation and Finite Element (FE) analysis on Abaqus Software.

Abstract: The energy crisis is one of the major problems in Pakistan. In the present time, power has
become a major need for human life. Energy is needed by all the sectors of the country and has an
important role in the economy. As the number of vehicles passing over the track is increasing day by
day so there is a possibility of tapping the energy and generating electricity by making the railway track
a power generation unit. The complete mechanism was studied, capable of electricity generation by
moving train on the railway track. The model was designed to have the capability to generate electricity
by moving a roller over it. Simple drive mechanisms such as rack and pinion assembly, gear sets
mechanism, and sprockets are used. Different design configurations were studied and compared to
choose the better design. This Non-conventional method is proposed as the solution to solve the
electricity shortage problem in Pakistan. Analytical calculations were performed to identify & calculate
parameters i.e. spring stiffness, force on rack, power, and mechanical advantage. Moreover, angular
velocities, Torque, and stresses on the shaft were also calculated. CREO parametric 6.0 was used for
the modeling of parts and assemble them to have a model of the designed mechanism. ANSYS
Workbench 2019R3 is used for simulation of the shaft to evaluate equivalent stresses and deformation
in the shaft. This system can be installed underground under the railway tracks to lighten the bulbs,
operate the fans, and for other purposes at stations.

Automatic Human following Trolley
Ameer Hamza, Husnain Ahmed Zahid
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad
[email protected], [email protected]
Abstract: In metro cities, people face a lot of problem in supermarkets to buy shopping items using
trolleys. Every time we need to push the trolley to bring it to the place where the object required by us is
present. The trolley was built that will follow a person continuously wherever he/she will go in the mall
and will carry sopping items for him/her. We used Arduino board as a microcontroller for interfacing
Ultrasonic sensors, RFID sensor and DC Motors. Ultrasonic sensors were used to follow the person.
Microcontroller compared the signals of ultrasonic sensors and as the change in signal was detected due
to movement of the person, the trolley moved. Movement of trolley was made possible by using DC
motors. When an obstacle was placed between the person and the trolley RFID sends signal to the
microcontroller to reconnect to the trolley.
The trolley followed the person successfully with some limitations. When a sharp turn was taken by the
person, the trolley drops its signals. It also happened in the case of an obstacle (here the obstacle is any
other person). So to overcome this situation a feature of buzzer was added to the trolley that whenever
the signal drops buzzer starts ringing and when the obstacle is removed it reconnects with the help of
RFID. This Automatic Human Following Trolley was made to test its working as a prototype without
considering its carrying capacity. The trolley can be used by old people/armed forces person wound in
war as they are very slow and cannot take sharp turns frequently.

Safety System to Avoid Accident During Driver Drowsiness
Muhammad Ali
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology
Abstract: The safety is very critical in the automotive industry and it would be a vigorous proposition
to have an innovative safety feature that would prevent the driver from falling asleep while driving. With
the aid of today’s technology, photographic equipment can be used to recognize when the driver’s eye
lid proceeds to mantle and Sclera/Pupil are no longer defined. The TTL serial camera module with
NTSC video output will use the Raspberry pi to send a signal to the driver seat. An unbalanced impeller
could be utilized to receive the output data signal emerging from the microcontroller, which is wired to
the data input of the impeller and output. The signal input will activate the impeller to vibrate the seat
and the output will activate the alarm and start to sprinkle the water on the driver along with the hazardous
light on so the vehicle coming from behind or from side should be alert also. Therefore, the driver is
alert of the situation. This process can continue to be implemented until the eyes are recognized as opened
again. Python will be used as a source code for programming, then the program will be implemented on
Raspberry pi. This innovation will be essential when concerned about safety and will decrease the rate
of accidents due to the lack of contemplation. The FYP is in final stages of its completion. I will try to
complete it as early as possible.

Hexapod (Robotics)
Qaim Raza, Usama Younas
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Abstract: In the rapidly advancing field of modern robotics, researchers continue to look for design
inspiration in nature. Hexapod robot is a mechanical vehicle that walks on six legs. Since a robot can be
statically stable on three or more legs, a hexapod robot has a great deal of flexibility in how it can
move. Now, when transporting a payload, one could always come in contact with uneven terrain and as
wheeled robots are optimal for plain surfaces, legged robots are optimal for uneven terrains.
Hence, it is of high priority to investigate ways to improve stability and locomotion in that particular
area. Hence, varying the gait style of Tri-pedal gait for uniform terrain to a set of 2-2 FBM (Front-
Back-Middle), the gait system can be selected depending upon the circumstances. The results were
obtained by using a software that allowed us to investigate the motion of model in a straight path as
well as on uneven terrain (Staircase scenario). The results showed that while Tri-pedal gait style is
best form of motion on straight or uniform path, the 2-2 FBM motion style is best in climbing the
stairs.
Keywords: Robotics, Hexapod, Uneven terrain, Tri-Pedal, 2-2 FBM
Specialized Tools: VREP software was used to simulate the real-time movement of the model with
plain surface and with uneven terrain to show 6 DOF motion of the payload. ANSYS was used to
determine the stresses and deformation in various joints during walking or standing on uneven as well
as plain terrain.

Design and Fabrication of Solar Electric Bike

Abstract: One of the largest sources of air pollution in urban areas is exhaust from the vehicles. Air
pollutants have numerous dangerous effects on the human health, climate, ecosystems, and built
environment. This is due certain flue gases emitting from the vehicle due to burning of fossil fuel. The
reduction in emission of harmful gases is possible in two ways; by making more efficient engines or by
utilizing the renewable, environment friendly energy source. Globally, researchers are working on both
sides, they are making system more efficient and utilizing the renewable energy resources. In this project,
we want to utilize the solar energy to run the electric bike (e-bike), which is an alternative to the
conventional bike. The term electrical bike or (e-bike) refers to all two-wheeled electric vehicles. We
will design and manufacture the e-bike. This bike will be powered by a battery using an electric motor.
As battery power is not always available due to cyclic nature of solar energy and battery needs to be
recharged so wo will provide 2 types of charging methods; electricity and solar energy. Recharging of
battery with electrical energy required the bike to stop and electricity plug is attached to a fast charger
with charging controller. While, the charging through solar energy can be carried out even when bike is
moving. Solar energy is captured using solar cells. A solar charging system is not complete without a
charge controller. The charge controller takes the energy from the solar cells and converts the voltage
so it's suitable for battery charging. Bike will also have its engine for critical circumstances in case if
there is any electrical failure or user want to travel at night or if there is insufficient battery power and
user have to travel long distance. Therefore, engine is also installed to avoid any inconvenience during
travel.

Abstract: This project mainly focusses on the basics of refrigerator evaporator working that extracts
heat from certain region by evaporating the fluid used for cooling purpose and how it absorbs heat from
surrounding and changes its phase to refrigerant vapor, thus creating cooling effect. With each passing
days the research is conducted on components of energy consuming devices to find out the possibility
of any optimization. Similarly, various techniques from time to time find out to look for the easiest
optimization. The main purpose of our project was to carry out a research on evaporator designs with
different fins configurations on pipes. The simplest possible designs were selected for easiness in
research work and then comparison was made. For the working of refrigerant within an evaporator we
analyzed how it was going to evaporate at certain temperature through volume of fluid (VOF) method
and with basic preliminary analysis. The design with minimum temperature difference and better
convective heat transfer was taken as best suited one and its data will be used for prototyping and
experimental purpose.

Design and Fabrication of Prosthetic Hand
Moaaz Asghar, Muhammad Haris Zaman

Abstract: Amputations have caused a large number of people to become social outcasts, and this state
makes people dependent on others for common tasks. Active prostheses allow people to perform
common daily tasks, helping them to improve their lifestyle. This dissertation describes the designing
of a feasible and economical prosthetic hand involving mechanical design and analysis, Finite Element
Analysis (FEA) simulations, and fabrication of a 3D printed actively controlled prosthetic hand. Four
bar mechanisms are used to control the fingers and the thumb of the prosthetic hand. Linear actuators
are used to actuate the four fingers which function with the help of four bar mechanisms. The four-bar
mechanism is actuated by an intermediate slider-crank mechanism to perform the flexion-extension
motion. The thumb performs flexion-extension along with circumduction with the help of two actuators.
The actuators use a slider-crank mechanism to initiate and control both motions of the thumb. The
mechanism is designed and analyzed using 2D- mechanism design software and 3D modeling CAD
software. The links are designed using graphical methods and then their motion is analyzed and
modified using kinematic diagrams in 2D-design software. The CAD software is used to model all the
required components of the prosthetic hand and simulate the motion of the prosthetic hand to ensure
that the mechanism performs all the required motions to achieve daily tasks. The design is then
modified again multiple times to attain the required clearance and alignment for the hand to function.
The hand is fabricated using Fused Deposition Method (FDM) 3D printing technology and tested for
the simulated motion. The design provides a simple and practical approach for making an
anthropomorphic prosthesis and the use of rapid prototyping also reduced the cost of manufacturing.

Design and Fabrication of Prosthetic Knee
Muhammad Arsal Naeem, Faizan Asif

[email protected], [email protected]
Abstract: Prosthetic knee is the replacement of the actual knee that is either lost due to disease,
trauma, accident or condition present at birth. Lots of technological advancements have been
made in the field of prosthetics in the recent years. Human locomotion is controlled by complex
neurological patterns. These patterns activate and synchronize the musculoskeletal system to
enable efficient and graceful ambulation. A limb amputation results in a partial loss of the
complex structure needed for human locomotion. Various prosthetic devices have been created
as substitutes, however they have simply been unable to match the human nervous systems
ability to move and orient the body in a smooth, efficient and intuitive manner. It is therefore
logical to utilize the existing control of the nervous system and capitalize upon its enormous
ability. The aim of this project is to design, fabricate and analyze a prosthetic knee which can
be either controlled passively or actively using hybrid control systems. The motion of human
knee is quite complex; it does not only perform rotational motion but also performs translational
motion i.e. general planar motion. The design is basically a four bar mechanism, commonly
known as polycentric knee. It will be connected with 1 linear actuator. Actuator will be
connected to Arduino and Arduino will receive signals from EMG electrodes. Surface EMG
electrodes are embedded in upper limb socket, which receives the signals from the contraction
activity of muscles. Design comprises of a four bar mechanism, EMG electrodes, Arduino,
Servo motors, linear actuator and upper limb socket. 3D assembled model was made using
solidworks and structural analysis was done using Ansys Workbench.

Study of PCM for Energy Storage
Irfan Shabbir, Atif Arif
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad
[email protected], [email protected],
Abstract: In this inquisition, twisted fin designs for the enhancement of the melting and solidification
process are used for phase change material (PCM) in a latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) unit
which is horizontal configuration. Phase change material (PCM) is Stearic acid while the heat transfer
fluid (HTF) is water. The mathematical model equations are numerically solved for the 3D geometries
using commercial CFD package ANSYS Fluent. The numerical solution procedure for the 2D planar
straight finned geometry is validated against the results from literature. According to literature, Y-
oriented fin design with orientation of 30 degrees is better than other orientation angles so it is used as
the validation geometry and the setup is validated against the Y-arrangement. Then the twisted
geometries are introduced for the same boundary conditions. The twist angles which were induced in
the geometries as Case-1, Case-2, Case-3, Case-4 and Case-5 are 90 ◦, 135 ◦, 180 ◦, 270 ◦ and 360 ◦
respectively. For shell material, steel is used but analysis of the effects of thermophysical properties of
fin and tube materials from literature reveals copper to be the best available option. The study revealed
that all these five designs with twist angles are better in terms of performance than the design with
straight fins as in base case. Melting time, heat storage rate and the total heat storage are the concerned
parameters to enhanced and the five cases proved to better than base case. Percentage enhancement
ratio and percentage time saving show that Case-5 with the twist angle 360 ◦ is the best among all the
five twist designs due to more exposed area of fin which improved heat transfer.

Design, Analysis and Fabrication of Water Turbine for Slow Moving Water
Muaz Adnan, Muhammad Ausaf Tahir

Abstract: Hydrokinetic energy the most readily and free source of energy available, could be extracted
to overcome the energy crisis in this era to provide basic electricity need to remote and urban areas with
low cost. The kinetic energy of flowing water at low speed could be extracted effectively by designing
an appropriate design of blade, as turbine’s performance is dependent upon the shape of its blade. In
this case, the wind turbine model with some modifications was used to design the blade. The Horizontal
Axis turbine model with propeller type configuration was selected for higher efficiency. The optimum
airfoil was selected and designed with optimal twist angle for maximum energy extraction process. The
model was designed in 3D modelling software SOLIDWORKS, and then the power analysis was carried
out through numerical simulations using commercial CFD package ANSYS Fluent. The power was
analyzed with different number of blades, and performance curves were generated for the most efficient
system. The calculations shows that for 1.5m/s rated speed of water the rotor diameter of 2 ft provides
the rated power of approximately 100 Watts at 70 RPM’s. The power curve of the turbine was analyzed
for the selection of efficient Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator, and direct drive system was
preferred to reduce the weight and losses due to gear system. The prototype was 3D printed for the
testing of the proposed model. This study shows that the optimum design of hydrokinetic turbines could
be integrated in series to provide the electricity energy to remote areas where the construction of Dams
and other resources are not available.

Development of a 3D Printed Lightweight Model Aircraft
Asad Sajjad, Ibrahim Humayun Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology
[email protected], [email protected]
Abstract: This project involves the development of a 3D printed lightweight model aircraft. 3D printing
has opened a wide range of opportunities for researchers to manufacture different complex structures
where conventional manufacturing techniques fail. It has many advantages over conventional methods
of manufacturing aircraft parts. Different plastics are used for 3D printing like PLA and ABS. In this
model, PLA was used for the 3D printing of aircraft parts. Analytical calculations were performed
to calculate design parameters using reference data from the literature. The design was optimized by
comparing. SOLIDWORKS was used for modeling geometry. Aerodynamic analysis of airfoil and
wing was performed on JAVAFOIL and ANSYS. Velocity and pressure contours were obtained using
SOLIDWORKS Simulations and results were verified. Propulsion analysis was performed on eCalc
software and required thrust at different aircraft speeds was estimated for the design parameters. The
performance curve was obtained through eCalc software. Endurance, minimum, and maximum speed
of aircraft were obtained from this curve. Topology optimization was applied using SOLIDWORKS to
further reduce the weight of the aircraft. Using this technique one can reduce the weight of different
structures without affecting their strength. About 40 percent weight was reduced using this technique.
Improved and optimized design was converted into STL files and then parts were printed using a 3D
printer. All the 3D-printed parts were assembled using Cyanoacrylate superglue. A fully functioned
lightweight 3D printed model of aircraft was developed and tested successfully.

Development of Tubulanes Inspired 3D Printed Structures for High Compressive
Strength Applications
Abdullah Imran, Zain-ul-Islam
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology
[email protected], [email protected]
Abstract: Tubulanes are hollow tube hypothetical structures of cross-linked carbon nanotubes. The
evolution process has allowed naturally occurring materials to optimize their molecular shape
according to their environment. Some of these materials exhibit excellent structural and mechanical
properties. Many different configurations of the Carbon atom such as diamonds, C60 Bucky Ball
structure and graphene are only some examples. Mimicking the atomic structure of these materials and
projecting those shapes macroscopically in the form of 3D printed structures and analyzing the
relationship between truss configuration and structural strength has been a key research area for
engineers for some time now. A decade ago, the difficulty of fabricating such structures limited the
research. However, with the advent of additive manufacturing, fabrication of such structures has become
comparatively much easier. in this project five different tubulane structures were studied which are
architecturally analogous to bio-materials like fullerenes, graphene and carbon nanotubes. Once
fabricated, the samples will be subjected to compressive and impact loading tests; and results will be
compared with the results of computer simulations.
Keywords: Tubulanes, 3D printing, compressive strength, ABAQUS simulations.
Specialized Tools: SOLIDWORKS and ABAQUS have been used to design 3d models of different
configurations and ABAQUS was used to run compressive strength and impact testing simulations.

Design and Fabrication of Solar-Powered Atmospheric Water Extraction
Mechanism
Jawaad Hassan, Muhammad Anas Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology
[email protected], [email protected]
Abstract: The problem of water scarcity has become a global issue nowadays. However, in highly humid
areas, moisture content can be collected from atmosphere in the form of water by the condensation
process. For this purpose, a working prototype of a solar-powered atmospheric water extraction
mechanism which involves peltier effect for cooling was designed and fabricated. A systematic design
approach was followed to use the thermo- electric cooling effect and photo-voltaic effect together for the
extraction of moisture content from air. Initially, mathematical modelling approach was used to analyse
the working of the system under different ambient temperatures and relative humidity levels. Designing
softwares were used for practical investigation of the system. The fabricated final prototype was used to
experimentally analyse the working of system and water generation rates under different humidity levels.
This study helps us in having an idea about the efficiency and practical significance of the system and
it's comparison with several different types of AWGs.
Keywords: Solar, Atmospheric water generator, Humidity, Sustainability
Specialized Tools: Solidworks and Ansys were used in our project in the designing phase. In
fabrication phase, welding, cutting, drilling and other such fabrication tools were used.
