Name of Grouping: Cherokee Apartment Houses
Common name: Commodore Apartments

Parcel Number: 5547-004-018
Legal Description: Hollywood Ocean View Tract lot 11, block I
Present Owner: Helen J. Riach Tr h20 N. McCadden PI, Los Angeles, CA 9000h
Architectural Style: Mediterranean
Description: Very similiar to the Admiral Apartments next door to the north, the Commodore is a five story building with Mediterranean decora- tive elements. The brick structure presents a plastered facade to the street. Quoining frames the bays to either side of the central entrance on the ground floor. Altered, the entry now projects from thefacade'in the shape of a cut-out cube. A molded cornice bands the building above the first floor. The second through fifth levels contain tripartite casement windows in the raised end bays and three double-hung sash windows in the slightly recessed central bay. Simple entablatures top the second and fifth story and bay openings, and corbeled balconets further embellish those on the fifth floor. The central bay on the upper floor is distinguished by roundheaded casements set above a course of arched corbeling. A heavily orna- mented frieze of medallions, garlands, cornucopia and brackets wrapps the roofline, above which a parapet correction has erased the original roof design. In addition to the entry and roof al- terations two lower story arched openings have been enclosed and a few windows have been re-glazed.

Present Owner: Shalom Ben-Levy, et a1 9025 Wilshire Blvd., #320, Beverly Hills, CA 90211
Architectural Style: Mediterranean Revival
Description: A selection of decorative elements associated with the Mediterranean Revival has been incorporated into the design of this five story apartment building. Built of brick, the structure has severely utilitarian side and rear elevations and a stuccoed west facade. It is symmetrical in composition and topped by a flat roof. A typical three-part design is observed. The base or ground floor is framed by quoins, topped by a stringcourse, and contains a central entry flanked by engaged, spiraled, columnettes. Four bays of paired one-over-one sash and a central bay of single windowsogebimg onto a fire escape comprise the second through fourth floor facade. Plain entablatures embellish each pair of windows. Above a string- course, the fifth floor and parapet are the focus for most of the decorative elements of the design. Pilasters patterned with urns and scrollwork separate the bays, and shields, festoons, and diamond- shaped plasterwork appear in the parapet. Metal awnings have been added toseveral upper story windows. Rising up from Cherokee with only a marginal setback, the building appears to have had no major alterations.

This is a "rare" Mission Revival house which was originally located on Highland Ave. near Hollywood Blvd. Once part of the Hollywood Blvd residential neighborhood, the house was moved in 1923 by prominent local architect, Arthur Kelly to accomodate the growing commercialization of Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave. . This house from the early days of Hollywood, stands with the Victorian Janes house as the last remnants of early Hollywood Blvd. This is one of two known Mission Revival structures remaining in the community. The house fills a prominent Vista at the end of Citrus Ave. and is a well known architectural landmark in this residential neighborhood.

Residential development in the tracts north of Hollywood Boulevard began in the early years of the 20th century. By 1910, when this Craftsman home was constructed, the area contained a mixture of Mission Revival, Mediterranean, Victorian, and Craftsman domociles. For the most part, the western section of the foothills between La Brea and Highland was characterized by substantial dwellings surrounded by gardens. The unaltered structure at 1754 is a remnant from that era. Its setback and mature land- scaping enhance the whimsical design. Although the context of the house has been eroded the quality of the design and the decorative elements used has made the building a sig- nificant representative of its time period.

DESCRIPTION 7a. Architectural nyle: ~ ~ d i ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ 7b. Briefly describethe prbrent physical desrription of the site or structure and dewribe any major alterations from its
ori~in*mndition: Located at the northeast corner sf El Cerrito and Franklin, this is a two story, U-shaped apartment court. Mediterranean influences are suggested by the highly textured stucco siding, the generous use of arched openings, and the rusticated base of the buildings on the street. The rear building is the focal point of the composition. Three large arched apertures define three bays on the lower story. Iron and glass lanterns flank the central entry. On the upper level each bay contains paired casements with balconets. Attenuated, twisted columns frame the flat-headed windows in the central bay and separate the round- headed openings in the side bays. Above a stringcourse, the parapet is accented by decorative plasterwork swags and urns, and a central, triangular pediment. The side buildings are simpler in detail, with corbeled balconets and tiled hoods embellishing some of the windows. The interior of the court is landscaped with lawns, small trees, and shurbs, and is reached by a short flight of stairs up from the sidewalk. No alterations were observed.

While a number of apartment buildings of this period were constructed in Hollywood, this example appears to be particularly well designed and remarkably intact. The fusion of Moderne and Colonial Revial Minimal Traditional elements makes this resource a snapshot of this period of development in Hollywood, and that architectural character and it's level of integrity render it eligible for the California Register under Criterion 3 as a superlative example of its style.

Parcel Number: 5537-002-006
Legal Description: North Park Tract lot 9, block A
Present Owner: Lawrence Ramberg 5h38 1/2 Fountain Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90029
Architectural Style: Mediterranean
Description: Extremely simple in design, this one story bungalow court suggests the Mediterranean style in its detailing. It is U-shaped and composed of five buildings. Stucco clad, the court's major design element is a broad arch topped hy a raised parapet which spans the narrow central walk- way. Wound-headed arches front the paths around the perim- eter of the court. The flat roof is fronted by a stepped parapet which echoes the arch motif at regular intervals. Casement windows are set into the walls with no decorative elaboration while the entries are flanked by arrow-tipped wrought iron awning supports. Neatly pruned hedges border the court and its interior path. The symmetrical design is unaltered.

Three one story duplexes line each side of a narrow central path anchored by a two sLory unit in the rear. A broad arch spans the path at the front of the court, Linking the two sides. Smooth stucco walls art: unornamented, accented only' by the red tile coping of the flat roofs and the small tiled hoods . over the entrances along the interior of the court. The bui ldingshnvr had no major alterations, although aluminum awnings do shade some windows.

P3a. Description: (Describe resource and its major elements. Include design, materials, condition, alterations, size, setting, and boundaries.)
Resource is a five story minimally Renaissance Revival style apartment buildin composed in three bays, with a smaller recessed center entry bay. The upper three stories are relatively unadorned masonry, with cornice composed of a flat double course studded with classical cartouches in varying sizes and styles, on the upper course divided by narrow ornamented raised panels. The upper portion of the first story repeats this detail above a faqade of scored concrete "blocks". The resource's fenestration is largely composed of regularly arranged four-pane casement windows, which are topped by heavy lintels embellished with heavy "capstone" details on the second floor, and marked on the third floor with a small under-window ledge which runs the length of the outer bays. Cost $80,000.

Resource is a one-story restrained Art Deco garage composed in three bays. The primary defining architectural features of the building are the four pilasters marking the bays, which terminate in stepped elements above the corniceline. The cornice is marked on its lower edge by sawtooth banding, and topped with simple geometric elements on the end bays. It appears that the original truss system is visible on the interior of the structure.

Structure appears to be relatively intact, and is an excellent, if restrained, example of Art Deco garage architecture. Historic auto-related structures are disappearing in the HoUywood area, especially those that retain the integrity to communicate both their original style and function. Therefore, this structure appears eligible for the California Register under Criterion 3 for its architectural quality.

oripinalc~nditi~n: The 1300 block of Grace has retained a cohesive visual identity due to its develnnm~nt with revival styled apartment com- nlexes from the 1920s - 1940s. No intrusions cmgromise the integri- tv of the street, which contains nine two story Spanish and Medi- terranean apartments of note (the ninth, 1832-50 Grace, is docu- mented senarately). Because of a fortuitous combination of peopra- ~ h i c character and street cnnfiguration, the block is experienced almost as a cul-de-sac atop a small rise. Common set backs are boserved, further enhancing the unitv of the streetscape. Occasion- allv lush lands can in^ complements the buildings. which are mostly well-maintained.
