ASSOCIATION NEWS

5 / 2020 Volume I

Dear CERBA Members,

As our respective countries find their own way of what might

be the first wave of the COVID19 pandemic, I would like to

reiterate the hope that you, your family and your friends are

staying healthy in every possible way.

The novelty and highly contagious nature of COVID19 have

very quickly taken the global discussion first beyond the

confines of biological science and then of public health pol

icy. As public health considerations imposed a drastic

reduction of normal economic activity in most countries,

governments had to devise economic stimulus and social

protection programs, each according to its own prevailing

traditions. It could not be long before the debate turned into

a political confrontation both at the international level and

within certain countries where the imposition of coercive

public health measures can still be seen in some quarters as

a threat to fundamental freedom.

In the context of this multilayered global debate and the

unusually complex tasks facing all governments, we at

CERBA quickly acknowledged that, given the new econom

ic challenges, we have a contribution to make. Our main

task, the promotion of greater international trade and invest

ment, will be even more important as countries struggle to

bring their economies back to prepandemic growth levels.

As a result of the pandemic, it would seem that we will not

necessarily see a surge of protectionism or a reversal of

globalization, but we will most likely see a greater concern

about vulnerability. This could apply to governments that will

probably review their practices in terms of stockpiling strate

gic medical equipment, among others, and may also

encourage the emergence of local suppliers. For the large

manufacturing entities with an international supply chain,

there will be a temptation to shorten that supply chain or at

least replace the elements that might appear vulnerable to

possible future disruption. Although these developments at

the first glance might seem to create additional obstacles to

many of our members that aim to expand their business

overseas, in fact, there are as many business opportunities

for such companies now as there were in preCOVID 19

world. Thus one of the main tasks of CERBA leadership and

staff nowadays is to educate members of our community on

where to look for these opportunities.

From the point of view of international trade and investment,

even before the pandemic is under control, there will be pres

sure to do more and to do it more intelligently, to reduce vul

nerability. It is worth recalling that the Canadian government's

trade diversification policy, which we consistently supported,

was primarily based on the idea of reducing the vulnerability

to a single market. The pandemic has not discredited the

idea. Instead, it is compelling us to refine it further.

The emergence of a consensus over the need to diversify

international trade and investment may well be the easy

part. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways that might allow us

to actively contribute to implementing such a policy event in

the context of social distancing and drastically reduced

international travel. From the start of the pandemic, CERBA

has been experimenting with various formats of online

events, as well as different event concepts and methods of

provision of the material. We have also expanded our mem

bership package by several new services currently in

demand, such as matchmaking during online events, regu

lar info updates on the situation in our mandate countries,

and other services.

In general, CERBA transition from reallife meetings to on

line ones has been swift and effective. Paradoxically, it has

even improved our capacity to reach out to some areas

where we could not so easily travel as well as to engage in

useful conversation with individuals that might not have

been available before. Our stakeholders, partners and staff

have so espoused the new ways, that our main task is to

optimise our calendar of online events. Whatever happens

next, online activities have now become an essential part of

our tool kit.

Whereas online events allow us to maintain and expand

contacts, they also have become effective ways of creating

business. Until exporters can meet again with their cus

tomers, we will have to perfect them so that they can truly

sustain and expand the actual business.

At the outset of the pandemic, we were hoping to help our

stakeholders navigate a difficult period. We see our main

objective as to return to our traditional role as a facilitator of

business cooperation between Canada and the Eurasian

countries, helping our membercompanies to maintain and

expand their business, and find the most efficient ways to

achieve this target in the context of the current geopolitical

situation. As long as the pandemic conditions will last, we

will continue developing new creative ways of promoting

international trade and investment. We count on your sup

port in addressing these new challenges.

In January 2020, En+ Group (LSE:

ENPL; MOEX: ENPG) participated

at Davos World Economic Forum

to discuss how the corporate sec

tor can lead on reducing carbon

emissions.

Speaking at Shaping the Future of Energy and Materials

panel Lord Barker, Executive Chairman of En+ Group and

former UK Energy and Climate Change Minister, noted that

En+ Group is fully committed to supporting energy transition

and advocating for greater transparency in GHG reporting.

Lord Barker commented: "Transparency is needed for alu

minium sector. We want to see carbon content of the metals

traded".

Earlier WEF teamed up with Energy Transitions Commission

where En+ Group is a member, and built "Mission Possible

Platform" to deliver on what is possible. Within Mission

Possible Platform En+ Group is leading Aluminium for

Climate initiative. It aims at increasing stakeholder knowl

edge on steps for the industry to reach netzero emissions

and to meet demand of low carbon aluminium.

En+ Group also joined the Business Ambition for 1.5°C

movement and committed to sciencebased emissions

reduction targets to drive the aluminium industry to a net

zero future. En+ Group responded to a calltoaction to limit

global temperature increase to 1.5°C and avert the worst

impacts of climate change.

In December 2019, En+ Group published its Level 1 carbon

emissions figures (based on International Aluminium Institute

classification). Average emissions for all EN+ aluminium are

2.6 tCO2/tAl compared to 12.6 tCO2/tAl world average and

show strong progress in transition to net zero. En+ Group

calls for Level 1 carbon emissions to be stated on all war

rants for LME traded aluminium as a practical step for the

industry to meet Paris Agreement Targets.

Participating at UN Climate Change Conference COP 25 in

Madrid, En+ Group emphasized the necessity to drive full

carbon transparency across the aluminium sector.

In Kazakhstan, new infectious centers for patients with coro

navirus, built in record time, have started working. They

were placed at the disposal of doctors at the end of last

week. Now the first patients are being treated in these med

ical institutions.

The decision to build hospitals in two of the country's largest

cities NurSultan and Almaty was made by the Kazakh

authorities in connection with the COVID19 pandemic.

These infection centers will expand the capabilities of doc

tors and will help to provide prompt assistance to patients.

Unlike prebuilt hospitals in other countries, both Kazakhstan

hospitals are designed for decades of operation.

The project was implemented by BI Group under the con

stant supervision of the Minister of health Elzhan Birtanov

and the city authorities. Construction work was carried out

around the clock in any weather. Hospitals are equipped

with modern biochemical laboratories, xray and computed

tomography rooms. For the first time in the country, the sep

aration of flows of people and materials according to the

degree of cleanliness is provided, zones for quarantine and

an intensive care unit are defined.

In NurSultan (the capital of Kazakhstan), a hospital with 200

beds, including 20 for intensive care, was built in just thirteen

days. The hospital has an area of 7006 square meters, it is

built of modular reinforced concrete structures made of

expanded clay concrete, manufactured using German tech

nology at the ModeX plant and is designed for a service life

of up to 50 years.

A similar hospital in Almaty was built in 18 days. Its area was

5,850 square meters. The twostory building is constructed

from building modules with sandwich panels. It has 98

wards with a total capacity of 280 beds, including 28 inten

sive care wards.

During the construction of medical complexes, all the latest

WHO (World Health Organization) requirements for infectious

diseases hospitals were taken into account, including those

adopted during construction. Hospitals are equipped with

special sewerage and ventilation systems. The latter pro

vides negative pressure in the wards thus, the air from them

does not penetrate outside even when the door is ajar. In

addition, the ventilation system is equipped with a cleaning

and disinfection system, which ensures the destruction of

99.99% of microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses.

All these measures can significantly reduce the risks to oth

ers, especially doctors working in the hospital. Recall that, as

of April 27, more than 2.7 thousand cases of coronavirus

infection were detected in Kazakhstan, about a third of them

were medical workers. 25 people died and 682 were cured.

According to preliminary calculations, the cost of construc

tion of one square meter of the capital's hospital in the final

finish was 694 dollars. In general, one bed with equipment

cost 64 thousand dollars, which is comparable or cheaper

than similar medical institutions abroad. BI Group

announced that it will operate at its cost without profit. This

repair was supported by dozens of contractors. Company

Deloitte will conduct an independent analysis of the con

struction cost.

At the start of the year 2020

GazpromneftOrenburg Well

Construction Unit (GPNO)

has launched its key project

in the area of increasing efficiency "The Full Cycle of Well

Construction". Global Performance Improvement Inc. (GPI)

team was selected as a consulting firm and started the col

laborative project to reduce the time of construction from

the start of drilling to commissioning.

The success of this project is highly valuable for GPNO, since

the duration of the well construction directly impacts well's

economics, which in its turn affects annual oil production.

Teams goal is to gradually reduce the cycle time by finding

and eliminating losses in waiting time between work stages

and optimizing individual processes.

GPI team has collected and analyzed data coming from all

of the relevant processes, developed a concept for the

implementation of the project, and initiated a formation of

the full cycle working group. An offsite working session was

organized with the participation of Gazpromneft to create a

collaborative value stream map. Due to the current situation

with the Covid19 pandemic, the working groups and meet

ing are carried remotely.

On April 12th, 2020, Global Performance Improvement Inc.

The first IMAX® theatre in

the city of Khabarovsk

opened on November, 14,

2019, becoming the third IMAX® theatre in the Russian Far

East joining two already operating in Vladivostok and the

53rd in Russia overall.

The new IMAX theatre with 299 seats, is located in BROSCO

MALL, the newest and the largest shopping center in the

city, built on the bank of the Amur river.

Right from the Day One the IMAX Khabarovsk topped the

box office list of IMAX theaters across Russia and the CIS. It

became No 1 in the IMAX format in titles "Ford V Ferrari",

"Frozen II", "Jumanji: The Next Level"; and No 4 in a title "Star

Wars. The Rise of Skywalker". It also topped the list by total

revenues during the 2020 New Year season.

John Schreiner, Senior Vice President, Theatre Deve

lopment, Russia, CIS, Middle East and South Asia comment

ed upon the opening: "IMAX has built a solid reputation in the

Russian Far East, and we were confident that the new IMAX

Theatre would be warmly welcomed in the city of

Khabarovsk and its 600 thousand inhabitants. The outstand

ing attendance to the IMAX in this market has exceeded my

expectations. I think this is a perfect example of how success

can be found outside of the two big cities in Russia and that

it is worth pursuing opportunities outside of the capital cities."

On March, 27, 2020 the Russian Association of Movie

Theater Owners, Russian NEVAFILM RESEARCH Company

and IMAX Corporation, together with the Bulletinkino, went

online to broadcast a discussion panel entitled "GUIDE

LINES FOR MOVIE THEATERS: QUARANTINE IN FIVE

STEPS. How movie theaters can survive the quarantine,

keeping their business and mind sane."

As most movie theaters in Russia and globally have shut

down to prevent the spread of the Corona virus, some of the

top players in the Russian cinema business NEVAFILM CEO

Oleg Berezin, IMAX Russia & CIS Marketing Director Olga

Pilnikova, Metropolitan Media CEO Maria Voght (Bulletin

kino), expert Yuri Kirillov shared their vision on how movie

theaters could navigate the rough times and keep their busi

ness with Russian theater topmanagers and owners.

They discussed some of the most difficult challenges which

Russian film distribution system is increasingly facing now,

and possible solutions which movie theaters in Russia

could use, including several, successfully applied by their

The largest international fi

nancial institution of the U.S.

government is interested in

expanding investment coope

ration with Kazakhstan. This was reported during the nego

tiations organized by KAZAKH INVEST with the leadership of

the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation

(DFC) and the topmanagement of the AIFC, Kazakhstan

Investment Development Fund (KIDF), Kazakh Tourism and

the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the USA. The

main subject of negotiations was the prospects for cooper

ation in the field of financing investment projects in the

Republic of Kazakhstan.

The Chairman of KAZAKH INVEST Baurzhan Sartbayev

informed the participants about the threetier system of

investors' support in Kazakhstan, which includes foreign institu

tions of the Republic of Kazakhstan, central national level and

local executive bodies. "KAZAKH INVEST plays an active role

at all three levels. This has become possible largely thanks to

the network of our foreign and regional representatives. Along

with this, we have established close interaction with the indus

try associations and domestic entrepreneurs. 24/7 service sup

port is available for active and potential investors, and today

KAZAKH INVEST provides a full range of services to support

investment projects from initiative to implementation and post

investment stages," noted Baurzhan Sartbayev.

The Vice President Garrett

Marquis, the Managing

Director Eric Jones and

the Director for Interna

tional Project Finance Tara

Blake participated in the

negotiations on behalf of

the DFC. The DFC repre

sentatives noted that the organization is interested in cooperation

with Kazakhstan due to the country's high investment attractive

ness, particularly in such sectors as infrastructure, energy and

telecommunications. In the new format the DFC budget has

been increased to $60 billion, and the range of instruments has

been expanded, which now includes not only debt, but also equi

ty financing. In addition, the organization provides political risk

insurance services and technical development.

"Relations between the USA and Kazakhstan are character

ized as an enhanced strategic partnership. The United States

is one of the largest investors in the economy of Kazakhstan.

Since 1992, total investment of American companies has

exceeded $45 billion. In addition to the oil and gas sector,

American companies demonstrate strong interest in imple

menting joint projects in agriculture, ICT and mechanical engi

neering. The interaction and longterm partnership between

the countries resulted in establishment of more than 400 com

panies in Kazakhstan with participation of the American capi

tal," noted Zhandos Temirgali, the Advisor to the Chairman of

KAZAKH INVEST, who moderated the negotiations.

Notably, KAZAKH INVEST has been developing cooperation

with DFC (previously withOPIC) since 2017. Thus, in 2018, the

two organizations signed a memorandum on infrastructure

investments. Joint events are being implemented, including

seminars for the Kazakh financial institutions and entrepreneurs.

The Deputy CEO of AIFC and the CEO of the AIFC Business

Connect James Martin informed about the main activities of the

AIFC, which include assistance in attracting investments into

the country's economy, creating an attractive investment envi

ronment in the financial services field, developing the local

securities market and facilitating its integration with internation

al capital markets. It is important to highlight that such American

financial giants as NASDAQ and Goldman Sachs played the

leading role in establishment of the AIFC. The AIFC, regulated

by English law, is a platform for investment in the region's

assets and opportunities. Today, the AIFC platform comprises

about 450 residents, including the American companies.

Public equity investments in projects from the priority indus

tries of Kazakhstan's economy made by KIDF were

explained by its CEO Asset Abdygapparov. To date, the

fund considers projects involving both sectoral and institu

tional investors, such as the DFC. KIDF partners with the

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan and

KAZAKH INVEST in searching and selecting of new invest

ment projects for equity financing.

In addition, the Chairman of Kazakh Tourism Yerzhan

Yerkinbayev informed the participants regarding the invest

ment potential and opportunities of the tourism industry.

Currently, the most attractive tourism sectors include eco

tourism and ski mountain tourism. According to Yerzhan

Yerkinbayev, the Turgen ski resort development project and a

number of regional projects aimed at the development of eco

tourism and related infrastructure have great prospects.

According to Rauan Tleulin, the MinisterCounselor of the

Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the United States,

considering the current crisis conditions, multinational com

panies have been reviewing international supply chains. This

creates additional opportunities for Kazakhstan to develop

not only the manufacturing sector, but also to establish and

develop new transcontinental transport and logistics centers.

The parties emphasized strategic importance of the negotia

tions designed to launch productive cooperation between

DFC and the Republic of Kazakhstan and significantly

strengthen investment and economic relations between the

countries. During the negotiations KAZAKH INVEST proposed

to DFC specific investment projects in such sectors as energy,

petrochemistry, agriculture, mining and metallurgy, healthcare,

tourism as well as transportation and logistics infrastructure.

For reference: The U.S. International Development Finance

Corporation (DFC) was established through the merger of

Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and

Development Credit Authority (a former division of USAID).

DFC partners with the private sector to finance solutions to the

most critical challenges facing the developing world today.

DFC invests in various sectors globally, including energy,

healthcare, infrastructure development, agriculture, innovation

and financial services. DFC also provides financing for small

businesses and women entrepreneurs in order to create jobs in

the emerging markets DFC's work takes a Triple Aim approach

focusing on impactful global development, advancing U.S. for

eign policy, and generating returns for American taxpayers.

Foreign aircraft manufacturers presented a number of air

craft, which had not been previously demonstrated in

Russia.

For the first time, MAKS organized special expositions and

sections on generalpurpose aviation, which demonstrated

about 50 light and ultralight aircraft, on unmanned aerial

systems, with the participation of developers and manufac

turers of unmanned aerial vehicles and operators of

unmanned aerial systems. Collective expositions of the

Republic of Tatarstan, Samara and Ulyanovsk Regions, and

Perm Krai were formed in the "Aviation Regions of Russia"

pavilion.

The show would not be a success without implication of

Rosoboronexport, TsAGI, VIAM, GosNIIAS, the Eurasian

Aerospace Congress, Novikombank, the Eurasian

Aerospace Cluster Partnership and the Government of

Samara Region.

CERBA organized a meeting with highlevel representatives

of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade (Minpromtorg)

for all Canadian participants attending MAKS. Minpromtorg

oversees the whole Russian aerospace sector as the vast

majority of the industry is government owned.

MAKS is an important event not only for the Russian aviation

industry and the Commonwealth of Independent States but

the global aviation and space industries as well due to the

fact that the prospects of aircraft building largely depend on

the wide international cooperation, on the close integration

of developments of designers, scientists, efficient use of

production facilities.

"Having a national pavilion at MAKS is of critical importance

because Russian clients read this as dedication to working

on the Russian market. We have Canadian companies who

have invested a lot in this market through decades of work

in some cases, so we have to keep supporting them"

explained Sebastien Dakin, former Regional Director of

CERBA MontrealOttawa and organizer of the pavilion.

range of projects aimed on industrial and business profile of

this part of Russia to be matched with the advanced level of

technical and infrastructural development that would be

expected in the modern world.

This Forum was attended by over 8000 delegates from 65

countries. The most substantial delegations came from

Singapore, Vietnam, Great Britain, and Malaysia. Following

the profile of one of the most prominent events in Pacific

Asia region serving the purpose of toplevel platform for

exchange of professional opinion and strengthening inter

government and B2B relations, many delegations were led

by Presidents or government executives.

The Forum hosted over 100 panel discussions, roundtables,

The Forum was also attended by the Head of the Russian

Trade Mission to Canada, Valerii Maximov, whose continu

ous support of CanadaRussia trade and active collabora

tion with CERBA made a visible impact discovering new

business opportunities matching Canadian technological

capabilities and Russian needs in innovations and growth in

some vitally important industry sectors in the Far East

regions.

It was a second time since the first CERBA delegation to

EEF in 2017, when the group was joint by the representa

tives of Canadian Embassy to Moscow, Stephane Jobin

(Stephane Jobin is Charge d'affaires a.i. of Canada in the

Russian Federation) and his colleague from the Commercial

Section, Heather Bystryk (Trade Commissioner at the

Canadian Embassy to Russian Federation).

Canadian West Coast interests were represented by Viking Air,

the manufacturer of famous Twin Otters, already opened a

door in the Russian market, where outdated park of small air

crafts for general aviation is open for joint business solutions.

CERBA was also honored to welcome on the mission the

two major mining stakeholders KINROSS Gold Corp. and

Silver Bear successfully working and expanding activities in

the vast Russia territories from Sakha Yakutia to Khabarovsk

regions. Important role in the group was taken also by

Founder and CEO of SCHNEIDER GROUP, Mr. Ulf Schneider

who spoke at one of the EEF sessions, and his colleague

Miriam Danne both visited from Moscow.

The mission was led by the Head of Moscow Chapter and

Founder of CERBA, Nathan Hunt.

As usual, Roscongress Foundation provided exceptional

support helping CERBA to organize a successful trip and

resolve most of related needs from providing timely infor

mation and navigation to logistical support on the ground.

The delegation participated at all events and activities

according to the needs and interests of its members, includ

ing the selfcoordinated informal dinner.

One of the most important outcomes of the EEF2019 is

more effective interactions between Roscongress founda

tion and CERBA that over time grown into productive rela

tionships helping each organization fulfill its mandate for the

benefit of CanadaRussia business dialogue.

Although current circumstances and economic uncertainty

caused by global pandemic in 2020 are pushing everyone

to some relevant changes in business plans, it is foreseen

that CERBA will continue working with Roscongress on pur

suing opportunities for Canadian companies and organiza

tions in the Russian Far East. Untapped opportunities are

considered for aviation and airspace, forestry and wood

processing, transportations and logistics, construction and

infrastructure, education and tourism, fisheries, environment

protection and sustainable development. And if travel plans

and live events will still be temporary suspended in the time

of EEF2020 beginning September, there are already dis

cussed plans on conducting online events and B2B bridges

allowing to build up remote connections that will easily be

activated once the limitations are gone.

The X Vancouver Mining Conference on the margins of AME

BC Roundup is scheduled for January 2021 and although

COVID19 interrupted many activities in unprecedented and

harsh manner, we are confident to gather mining profes

sionals for this anniversary event in Vancouver again and

looking forward to reconnect with all interested participants.

18 / 2020 Volume I

The Conference took place on January 22nd, 2020 at

Dentons conference center in a very hard of Vancouver

Downtown, just steps away of the famous Canada Place.

This was the most substantial mining event that the

Vancouver Chapter organized since 2011, when the Mining

conference became our traditional annual gathering in col

laboration with Association of Mineral Exploration BC. The

Roundup is one of Canadian oldest venue for mining pro

fessionals to come together, display industrial achieve

ments, share experience, and establish new contacts.

CERBA is the only organization partnered with AME BC to

bring on board mining and investment professionals to facil

itate collaboration and trade deals. Along with Roundup

itself the CERBAVancouver Mining conference has grown

from a round table seminar to almost a full day international

conference, that incorporates three panels of the most

prominent speakers, representing international government

and business stakeholders coming together to discuss chal

lenges and opportunities in the mining industry and talk

about future forecasts and mitigation risks in the global eco

nomic landscape.

For the first time the Conference was attended by the sub

stantial international delegation included companies from

Mongolia, Russia and Kazakhstan. For this group the

Conference was just a oneday event smoothly incorporat

ed into their 7day program coorganized in collaboration

with OKTAN Knowledge Exchange Partnership, among B2B

meetings, presentations at the BC Provincial Government,

round table discussions with mining professionals, financial

institutions and leading scientists.

The content of event was focused on subjects actively dis

cussed by many public and private groups.

The panels of speakers at the Conference included

Ambassador of the Russian Federation, H.E. Alexander

Darchiev, VicePresident of KINROSS Gold Corp., Stanislav

Borodyuk, President of the Economic Geologists Asso

ciation of Mongolia, EnkhAmgalan Chuluunkhuu, Minister

Councelor of the Embassy of Kazakhstan, Murat Rustemov,

On December 11, 2019, CERBA jointly with Vladislav

Tretiak's Charitable Foundation held CERBA 18th Annual

Charity Auction with Vladislav Tretiak at the legendary GUM

Demonstration Hall with its breathtaking interiors. CERBA

Charity Auction has been organized in Moscow every year

since 2002 to raise money to help orphans, improve schools,

sporting facilities and provide equipment to hospitals in vari

ous Russian regions like Ulyanovsk, Saratov, Irkutsk and the

North of Russia.

This year the event received strong support from the

Canadian, Russian and international business communities,

and was attended by more than 250 businessmen, civil ser

vants, diplomats, media representatives, and wellknown cul

tural and public figures from the Russian and Canadian

sides, as well as the Embassy of Canada in Moscow.

The festive evening featured a spectacular entertainment

program, live auction, silent auction with lots ranging from art

CERBAVancouver had traditionally active and constructive

relations with the Republic of Belarus. Since 2017, when

Belarus became an attractive destination for the Canadian

importers and suppliers visits of Embassy representatives as

well as business delegations were quite regular, therefore the

first outreach visit of the new Head of Belarus Diplomatic mis

sion to Canada, Mr. Evgeny Russak attracted lots of interest

from both government organizations and business community.

The Round table with Mr. Russak took place at the Miller

Thomson LLP main boardroom on November 7 gathering

representatives of BC based companies eager to learn

about current developments and updates on Belarus busi

ness climate and proposals for cooperation from the com

panies interested in exploring Canadian market.

Two years ago, CERBAMontreal Chapter organized a suc

cessful business mission to Belarus. The outcomes were

broad information on where we can focus resources to get

the most of that market for Canadian businesses and good

working contacts that helped Quebec companies to build

up on established economic ties. Belarus is a modern East

European country with vast resources and lots of products

that may be of interest in the Canadian market. It is also

open for Canadian suppliers and industrial technologies, so

the twoway economic relations are open for all interested

public and private groups. The latest information on the

country presented by Mr. Russak was well received and

called for lots of questions from over 25 people audience.

The meeting was going in participative atmosphere of mutu

al understanding and after official presentation turned into

the friendly interactive roundtable and exchange of con

tacts, remarks and opinions. Nice final touch was warm wel

coming of the new member Alexander Kavaliou, President

& CEO of European Natural Solutions Inc. into the CERBA

community and handing over a membership certificate.

We anticipate continuing developing contacts with Belarus

Embassy and planning another business mission now

more focused on the West Coast market priorities.

This is the second project organized by CERBAVancouver

Chapter in collaboration with OKTAN Knowledge Exchange

Partnership and the Executive MBA Program of the Moscow

State University (Faculty of Economy). The 25 people dele

gation representing business and management leaders

from broad range of Russian regions and industry sectors

arrived in Vancouver for the 10days business program on

November 19.

The main objective of the program was to help Russian

industrial professionals to better understand tools and

approaches common in Canada for facilitation and main

taining effective international business and trade. While

CERBA aim in this project was to build new business con

tacts and promote professional expertise of its members

and partners. The program of this visit included workshops,

meetings with federal and provincial government, visits to

the local companies, educational and financial institutions,

and interactive round tables. In the due course of the pro

gram our guests became also better aware of such impor

tant Canadian values as environment protection and gro

wing sustainable human habitat, equality and respect to all

members of the versatile community.

Speakers at the seminars and meetings were representa

tives of leading BC and international organizations, such as

Viking Air, HSBC, University of British Columbia, Capilano

University, Miller Thomson LLP, Globe Foundation, AFEX,

Sensei Technologies, ME Elecmetal and many others. The

group was received also by the BC Ministry of Jobs, Trade

and Technology and the Vancouver regional office of Global

Affairs Canada. One of the program highlights was meeting

with H.E. John Sloan, the former Ambassador of Canada to

Russia, Armenia and Uzbekistan.

The group received warm welcome from all Canadian part

ners and had unique experience visiting such hard to get in

places as the TRIUMF research center with cyclotron nuclear

facilities opened for conducting scientific studies by the

researchers from around the world; cinema studios, pavilions

and craft shops of the Cinematography Faculty in Capilano

University. They have also were given a special presentation

on climate change mitigation programs and sustainable

development by Globe Foundation of Canada and a number

of hands on seminars from business professionals and inter

national trade advisors. A very unexpected surprise was at

the meeting with the BC provincial government where a for

mal 30minutes introductory session turned into over two

hours open minded discussion on many aspects of Russian

and Canadian realities and what could be done to allow

closer and more effective business relations.

A special touch prepared for the delegates was the program

completion ceremony celebrated at the posh Women's Club

at Hycroft Manor the heritage building erected in 1911 by

McRae family in the very heart of Old Vancouver.

The outcomes of this program have not been long in com

ing: one of the most prominent delegates the international

corporation FINCOM Group (Russia) became CERBA mem

ber soon after returning back home, and we are currently in

the middle of a substantial joint project aimed to promotion

of education in British Columbia to the Russian Federation

and CIS. Another big project is about to commence in the

near future is focused on sustainable technologies in con

struction and resource industry.

CERBAVancouver is planning to continue working with the

Moscow State University and expect more visits of their

MBA Program Alumni, given their interest and comprehen

sive approach to all sides of our cooperation.

We are grateful to OKTAN Knowledge Exchange Partnership

for the continuous support and fruitful collaboration allowing

to build up closer connections between the Canadian and

Russian educational and industrial professionals.
