Two Florida colleges — Indian River State College (IRSC) and Miami Dade College (MDC) — have been named the 2019 winners of the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.

The colleges will share $700,000 of the total $1 million award. This is the second time the Aspen Prize was shared by two colleges.

"Our mantra is 'Student success is the most important thing at Indian River," President Edwin Massey said at the awards ceremony Tuesday hosted by the Aspen Institute. "That statement is on all our publications, it's the major focus of every conversation we have."

5/17/2019 Two Florida colleges share Aspen Prize — Community College Daily

Massey, who has been president at IRSC for three decades, said he believes when students feel important, they are motivated to complete, graduate and move on to jobs with good salaries.

IRSC, which was an Aspen Prize finalist in 2015 and a finalist-with-distinction in 2017, has a 56 percent transfer rate, which is far above the national average of 32 percent. Among students who transfer, 52 percent attain a bachelor's degree, beating the national average of 42 percent. In addition, IRSC alumni earn an average salary of $41,492 five years after graduation, compared to $38,717 for all employees in the region.

Serving the community MDC, the largest community college in the country, was lauded for providing a clear path to economic and social mobility for its diverse student population. The college has a 43 percent graduation and transfer rate for students of color, and a 47 percent bachelor's attainment rate for transfer students. MDC was an Aspen Prize finalist-with-distinction in 2011.

"Open access and academic excellence go hand in hand," said Eduardo Padron, who plans to retire this year after serving as the college's president for a quarter of a century. "The future of America is extrinsically linked to what we do," he said, calling community colleges "true factories of this nation" and "great equalizers."

Strong outcomes The Aspen Institute recognized three colleges with Rising Star awards and each receive $100,000:

■ Odessa College (Texas) was noted for its innovative strategies to help students stay in college, including eight-week semesters.

■ Pierce College Fort Stellacoom (Washington) eliminated "micro-barriers" to student success by providing emergency aid, transit passes and childcare and eliminating unnecessary fees and arbitrary deadlines.

■ Palo Alto College (Texas) has a strong guided pathways program and greatly increased the number of advisors.

Another five colleges were Aspen Award finalists: Broward College (Florida), Kingsborough Community College (New York), Mitchell Technical Institute (South Dakota), Pasadena City College (California) and San Jacinto College (Texas).

5/17/2019 Two Florida colleges share Aspen Prize — Community College Daily

The Aspen Prize review committee looked at more than 1,000 community colleges and invited 150 to apply.

In selecting the winners, the reviewers looked at completion, labor market outcomes, equity, and what colleges "are doing intentionally to deliver high-quality student learning," said Josh Wyner of the Aspen Institute. "And we asked students, 'What is the college doing to ensure you succeed?"

Common threads The 10 finalists are achieving strong success rates, including graduation rates of 60 to 70 percent, Wyner said. They are also adopting the pathways model, creating clear course sequences and providing plenty of advising.

But all that isn't enough, Wyner said. Excellent colleges work hard on closing equity gaps, improving teaching practices and giving students "a sense of belonging in the classroom."

In addition to their roles as preparing students to transfer and providing job training, they are important for knowledge creation and for being "anchors in their community," Wyner said.

AL DIAZ [email protected] Silver Knight winner Marissa Manley, from Dr. Michael M. Krop High School, receives her award from Aminda Marques Gonzalez, publisher and executive editor of the Miami Herald Media Company, and Rick Hirsch, Miami Herald managing editor, at Miami's James L. Knight Center on Thursday.

Winners tried to help Parkland BY COLLEEN WRIGHT [email protected]

From one of the darkest moments in Florida history, this year's 2019 Silver Knights lit their own path forward.

When the deadliest school shoot-ing in state history ravaged her school, Ashley Paseltiner organized a

Not-So-Scary Halloween Party to show kids in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High community that it was OK to feel joy. Stacey Gringauz at nearby North Broward Preparatory School raised $150,000 by making custom bracelets so she could give the proceeds to the families of the 17 killed and the 17 recovering from

gunshot wounds. The teens were among

30 winners recognized Thursday night at the 61st annual Miami Herald Sil-ver Knight awards at the James L. Knight Center. They shined among 639 nominees from 109 schools, with winners picked in 15 categories in both Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The categories included art, athletics, science, mathe-matics, speech, world languages, and other ar-eas.

"After everything that happened, people in our community felt so uncom-fortable coming to our school," said Paseltiner, the Broward winner in the drama category. "It means so much to me to just be able to welcome people back to my school and make it our home again."

Silver Knights like her and Gringauz identify problems in their commu-nities and beyond and work to solve them, some-times under the grimmest of circumstances. On top of being star students with impressive résumés both in and outside of the class-room, they take on service projects. They commit to an intense, sometimes years-long application process to be nominated by their schools for the Silver Knight awards and undergo interviews by a panel of judges.

"The accomplishments you've made and the aca-demic success you've achieved are beyond ex-ceptional," said Aminda Marques Gonzalez, exec-utive editor and publisher of the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald. "They've made each and every one

of you a winner, and we hope that you cherish the memory of this special moment for the rest of your lives."

The winners join an exclusive group of Silver Knights who have made a lasting mark in the South Florida community and beyond. Notable alumni include Amazon founder and magnate Jeff Bezos, "Rocky" composer Bill Conti, artist Xavier Corta-da, and Frances Dee Cook, the former ambassador to Burundi, Catheroon, and Oman.

They take home some sweet rewards, too: a Sil-ver Knight statuette, $2,000, and 25,000 American Airlines Ad-vantage miles. An addi-tional 90 students — 45 in each county — were named Honorable Men-tions, receiving a plaque, and $500. There are three honorable mentions for each category in each county.

Often, the Silver Knights' service projects hit close to home.

A first-gener-ation American, Adyant Khanna traveled to his family's native India every sum-mer, where he would play cricket with his friend,' Jammu. He real-ized in his fresh-man year that Jammu's village didn't have clean Ashley drinking water, so Paseltin the Miami Palmet-to Senior High student raised $25,000 to install a low-cost, water-supply infrastructure to help thou-sands of people.

Those villagers now have fewer illnesses and improved productivity, and Khanna hopes to help more people.

"It's inspired me to do more and help others and expand my project," said

Khanna, who won in the gen-eral-scholarship category.

Sick of the gun violence in her community, Aiyana Edwards rallied 500 stu-dents from Dil-lard 6-12 to walk out to the Urban League of Bro-ward County to advocate for victims of gun violence and to

raise awareness of er the issue.

And as Vene-zuela continues to decline under political and eco-nomic pressures, Sofia Alvarado, at Coral Reef Senior High, and Natalie Chevrel, at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, both mobilized to send supplies home to their native coun-try.

"After leaving my coun-try and leaving everybody behind, after that I've just

tried to do everything to make up for the sacrifices my parents have made," said Alvarado, who is the business winner in Miami-Dade and left Venezuela in 2010. "I hope this is some-thing to show... how much they've helped me so I wanted to give that back."

In some cases, Silver Knights overcome obsta-cles and help others do the same.

Jazmin Neadle was placed in a foster home before she was adopted in sixth grade. She rallied nonprofits, businesses, and radio celebrities to host memorable Quinceanera and Sweet 16 parties for 65 girls at Children's Home Society & Family Resource Center.

"It means a lot because it proves to me that your past doesn't define you, you define your future," said Neadle, who attends South Miami Senior High and won in the category of music and dance.

Two banners — each marking Indian River State College's journey to excelling in student achievement

and performance — hung from a balcony inside the Kight Center for Emerging Technologies for several

years.

One banner represents IRSC's milestone in being named a top 10 finalist in 2015 for the national Aspen

Prize for Community College Excellence (https://highered.aspeninstitute.org/aspen-prize/?

_ga=2.142002993.220430797.1558047158-1343789170.1558047158), a prestigious award sought out

by colleges nationwide, officials said. The college advanced further, placing as a top 3 finalist 2017, a

fact displayed on the second banner.

Now, the hard work of educators and faculty paid off in April, when the school was named as a top

winner of the Aspen Prize (https://highered.aspeninstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/2019-Aspen-

Prize-National-Releasefinal.pdf).

Thursday, a third banner was hung inside the Kight Center, recognizing the 29,000 student college for its

achievement. More than 100 spectators, including students, educators and legislators, cheered as the

banner was unveiled, followed by the release of confetti.

"We're inspired by how IRSC has worked with students," Aspen Institute Vice-President and College

Excellence Program Founder Josh Wyner said through a video message. "Students are graduating at

higher rates, they are successful in labor markets. Data shows IRSC is deserving of the Aspen Prize."

=isi...rsiormerriar

Dr. Edwin Massey, president of the college, passionately spoke about the school's achievement about 4

p.m. Thursday at the Kight Center in Fort Pierce. Massey said he was extremely proud of the college's

employees to be operating at such a high level.

"The 2019 Aspen Prize is a credit to the people of Indian River State College and the outstanding

communities we serve," Massey said in a statement. "IRSC is enriched with some of the most incredible

people supporting our college mission, and this distinct honor validates their commitment on a national

level. Bringing home the Aspen Prize is truly a celebration of their hard work."

Legislators in attendance, including state Sen. Gayle Harrell and Representative Toby Overdorf,

presented IRSC with resolutions congratulating the institution on its achievement.

"It's phenomenal," Harrell said. This would not have happened without community effort and everybody

working together to make this the number one college in the country."

IRSC, which has five campuses on the Treasure Coast and in Okeechobee county, shared the top honor

with Miami-Dade College, officials said. Three other colleges received the "Rising Star" award for

improvement — Odessa College and Palo Alto College in Texas, and Pierce College at Fort Steilacoom

in Washington.

The program at Aspen Institute has given awards every two years since 2011, officials said. The prize is

funded by ECMC Foundation, Joyce Foundation, The Kresge Foundation and the Siemens Foundation.

This years prize — $1 million — will be split among the five colleges, officials said.

The program facilitators conduct a selection process from a pool of more than 1,000 community colleges

nationwide.

Facilitators focus on four areas — learning, degree completion, graduation and labor market success,

success in transfer to four-year institutions, and fairness in access and success for low-income and

minority students.

For IRSC, facilitators reviewed the school's transfer rate, percentage of students who go on to pursue

Bachelors degrees, alumni salaries five years after graduation, affordability and other factors, all of

which were above average.

"This is no overnight experience," Massey said. "We are proud to bring the award back to the Treasure

Coast and Okeechobee county."

TWO FLORIDA SCHOOLS WIN 2019 ASPEN PRIZE FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGE EXCELLENCE Apr 5, 2019 I News

The $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence is the nation's signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America's community colleges.

The winners of the 2019 prize, which were selected from an original. pool. of more than 1,000 community colleges nationwide, both come from the Sunshine State.

Indian River State College and Miami Dade College were recently named winners of the 2019 Aspen Prize, which assesses institutional performance in four areas: student learning, certificate and degree completion, success after graduation in the labor market and in transfer to four-year institutions, and equity in access and success for students of color and low-income students.

"Indian River has among the strongest graduation rates for both associate degrees and bachelor's degrees in the nation. Miami Dade works tirelessly on reforms that have improved the graduation rate and virtually erased the achievement gap for students of

color," said Josh Wyner, executive director of the College Excellence Program and an Aspen Institute vice president, in a press release. "Most importantly, the data make clear both community colleges do a great job of preparing students for what comes next, whether that be pursuit of a bachelor's degree or landing a good job."

Each winner will receive $350,000. Additionally, Odessa College (Odessa, Texas), Palo

Alto College (San Antonio, Texas), and Pierce College at Fort Steilacoom (Lakewood, Washington), were awarded the "Rising Star" prize for their strong record of improvement and $100,000 each. Broward College in Fort Lauderdale was among this year's 10 finalists.

The Aspen Prize was established in 2011 and is awarded every two years.

Indian River State College (IRSC) — which was cited as an Aspen Prize "Finalist with Distinction" in 2017 and awarded $100,000 — is located in Fort Pierce and has an enrollment of 24,300 students. The school was recognized this year for providing "strong guidance that allowed students to develop academic plans clearly mapping a path to transfer without losing time or credits," per the report. IRSC was also praised for building 17 of its own bachelor's degree programs to create educational opportunities beyond two-year degrees for its students; the nearest four-year university is more than 60 miles away.

More than half of all IRSC students transfer into a bachelor's program, and more than half of those earn their degree.

"The 2019 Aspen Prize is a credit to the people of Indian River State College and the outstanding communities we serve," said Dr. Edwin Massey, President of IRSC, in a statement. "From our Trustees, to our community partners, to our employees, to our dedicated students, IRSC is enriched with some of the most incredible people supporting our college mission, and this distinct honor validates their commitment on a national level. Bringing home the Aspen Prize is truly a celebration of their hard work."

Miami Dade College (MDC), a "Finalist with Distinction" in 2011, is the nation's largest community college, with more than 95,000 students enrolled annually. MDC was praised for playing "a critical and inspirational role in providing an on-ramp to higher education for students who may otherwise have never found one." The vast majority of MDC students come from low-income households and are the first in their families to attend college, according to the report. Nearly 75% of its students are Hispanic and 16% are Black. The college also enrolls more than 17,000 immigrant students each year from more than 150 countries.

The college has a 43% graduation and transfer rate for students of color, compared to the national average of 35%. Earlier this year, FCAN highlighted MDC's mix of math academic supports designed to help students succeed in credit-earning courses.

"This award is an affirmation of what we've been aspiring to for so many years at MDC, mainly to ensure open access and academic excellence can go hand-in-hand," said Dr. Eduardo J. Padron, MDC's president, in a statement.

Journalist and Author Alex Newman Speaks in Columbia Event: "Rescuing Our Children"

By April Few 0 MI Published: 16 May 2019

Columbia, SC — There is a reason the Deep State globalists sound so confident about the success of their agenda - they have a secret weapon: More than 85% of American children are being indoctrinated by radicalized government schools. In this explosive talk, Alex Newman exposes the insanity that has taken over the public school system. From the sexualization of children and the re-shaping of values to deliberate dumbing down, Newman shows how dangerous this threat is — not just to our children -- but to the future of faith, family, and freedom. More iiffiftelemiknbor§rwftirliat you and every American can do about it.

He is available for media interviews.

"Rescuing Our Children" begins at 7pm on Wednesday May 22nd at the Columbia Evangelical Church, 1013 Bamwell St., Columbia. Light refreshments will be served following the event and ADMISSION IS FREE. PLEASE REGISTER AT USPIE.ORG TO ENSURE YOUR SEAT!

The event is sponsored by Exodus Mandate and United States Parents Involved in Education (USPIE) and its local chapter SC Parents Involved in Education.

Exodus Mandate is a Christian ministry to encourage and assist Christian families to leave Pharaoh's school system (i.e. government schools) for the Promised Land of Christian schools or home schooling. It is our prayer and hope that a fresh obedience by Christian families in educating their children according to Biblical mandates will prove to be a key for the revival of our families, our churches and our nation.

USPIE is a nonprofit, nationwide coalition of state leaders focused on returning control of education to parents and local communities by eradicating federal intrusion. State leaders from around the country who are fed up with being ignored on education policy have joined forces to abolish the US Education Department and put an end to all federal education mandates.

"Rescuing Our Children - and Our Nation"

Journalist and author Mr. Alex Newman exposes the socialist indoctrination and globalist agenda in the government school system. Alex is on a four month National Education Tour promoting Biblical Christian education, giving 44 presentations in 22 states over the next four months. Alex's ministry has been so well embraced that he has had to decline numerous requests as his schedule is completely full.

Four Events in Virginia! — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — There is a reason the Deep State globalists sound so confident about the success of their agenda - they have a secret weapon: More than 85% of American children are being indoctrinated in our atheist/humanist/Marxist government schools. In this explosive talk, Alex Newman exposes the insanity that has taken over the public school system. From the sexualization of children and the re-shaping of values to deliberate dumbing down, Newman shows how dangerous this threat is -- not just to our children -- but to the future of faith, family, and freedom. More importantly, he shares what you and every American can do about it.

"Rescuing Our Children" begins at 7:00 on May 27, at New Covenant Church, 1079 Big Bethel Rd., 23666, on May 29, StoneBridge School, 1629 Jolliff Road, Chesapeake, 23321, on May 30, Grove Avenue Baptist Church, 8701 Ridge Rd, 23229, and June 4, 6:30pm, Harvest Moon Restaurant, 7260 Arlington Blvd., 22042 . Admission and other details: https://face.net/rescuing-our-children/

Alex has a B.S. in journalism from the University of Florida with an emphasis on economics and international relations, as well as an A.A. in foreign languages from Miami-Dade College. He is co-author of the book Crimes of the Educators, and currently serves as foreign correspondent for The New American magazine and Advanced Economics teacher at FreedomProject Academy. He is available for media interviews.

KC selected as one-of-20 colleges nationwide for Guided Pathways project 05.16.19 - 07:20 pm

KC selected as one-of-20 colleges nationwide for Guided Pathways project

The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) announced this week that Kilgore College was one of 20 institutions selected nationwide to participate in a new two-year project, "Strengthening Guided Pathways and Career Success by Ensuring Students Are Learning."

The Guided Pathways project is designed to build institutional capacity to ensure students are learning.

KC was one of only seven colleges from Texas chosen for the project through a highly competitive selection process.

"AAC&U is thrilled to partner with the selected Guided Pathways institutions to promote student success and demonstrate the ways in which community colleges are vital to our nation's strength—serving as engines of discovery, innovation, and social mobility," said AAC&U President Lynn Pasquerella.

As the leading national association focused on quality in undergraduate education, AAC&U, in collaboration with the Center for Community College Student Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin, will work with the 20 institutional participants to strengthen designs of project-based and applied learning experiences.

The institutions will corroborate to assess student achievement of learning outcomes to advance equity and student success goals along guided pathways.

The Guided Pathways framework is composed of four main practice areas: (1) mapping pathways to student end goals; (2) helping students choose and enter a

program pathway; (3) keeping students on path; and (4) ensuring that students are learning.

The following institutions will participate in the project:

Amarillo College

Chattanooga State Community College

Community College of Baltimore County Foundation, Inc.

Crafton Hills College

Finger Lakes Community College

Houston Community College

Indian River State College

Kapi'olani Community College

Kilgore College

Miami Dade College

Middlesex Community College

Monroe Community College

Northeast Wisconsin Technical College

Palo Alto College

Salt Lake Community College

San Antonio College

San Jacinto College

South Texas College

St. Petersburg College

Waubonsee Community College

Four additional institutions that responded to the call for proposals received honorable mentions:

Community College of Philadelphia

St. Philip's College

Stanly Community College

SUNY Rockland Community College

"If we, as a nation, are going to close equity gaps in student outcomes, we must engage in collaborative and comprehensive efforts to help institutions that serve our most diverse students enhance their existing structures and practices to fully prepare students for success," said Tia Brown McNair, AAC&U Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Student Success. "One goal of this effort is to learn from the work of these twenty institutions to inform the learning processes at many other institutions to ensure that learning and completion remain equal priorities."

AAC&U is looking forward to partnering with the Pathways Collaborative on this effort and will convene an advisory group of leading experts to fully realize the project goals. The project is supported by funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Ascendium Education Group.

Exhibition Artists Manuel Perez at Miami Dade College West Campus 1O/May/2019

Miami, Florida

Miami Dade College's (MDC) West Campus presents Manuel Perez's exhibition, Different for Good, in collaboration with Contemporary Art Projects USA, opening Tuesday, April 18, at 11:30 a.m., free and open to the public, on display through Thursday, June 20, 2019.

Manuel Perez, born in Cuba, resides in Miami, FL. He discovered his artistic talent early in life and became a self-made ceramic sculptor. Attracted by nature, geography, history, landscapes and architecture, he conceived his own new vision to create soft or colorful ceramics, some as full-bodied three-dimensional sculptures, others as flat elements. Mariavelia Savino, curator, considered three key points about Manuel Perez's mastership in ceramic sculpture: His ability to control the permanence of time by creating something in his own 'unique forever' artistic dimension; his versatility to manage and merge any theme in his art, such as varied subjects, diverse shapes, created colors, that by his hands become unique artworks; and third, his technical ability in the use of his ceramic media to reach the highest results visually and intellectually.

The MDC exhibition, Different for Good, includes: five installations, one artwork entitled The Four Elements, two self-standing sculptures, a Roman Warrior Guardian and a Chinese Warrior Guardian, both masterly made as dark brown ceramic pieces. The display symbolizes Human Kind with its beauty and drama, from love to war, from destruction to redemption, declaring art as a path to illuminate and teach humanity towards peace and positive action. The exhibit addresses as a concept the idea to think positive to creatively build Art and uplift Life in every sense and field, from feelings to concrete action.

Alley by alley, street by street, parking lot by parking lot, the city commission is giving away Miami Beach's

municipal treasures.

Dear Miami Beach Resident,

This past Wednesday I was driving along and decided to tune in to the Miami Beach Commission meeting.Thank goodness I did, because what I heard shocked me.

The commission was discussing an open bid on the Byron Carlyle theater. For those of you unfamiliar with it, the Byron Carlyle is a city-owned theater on 71st Street, currently housing the 0 Cinema. The theater is built at a low elevation, has flooded in the past, and few would argue that its current state is its "highest and best use".

It is prime real estate located in the new "Town Center" dense area, and worth around $10-12 million.

No one questions the fact that the Byron Carlyle facility is in bad shape and falling apart. What is questionable however, is this new bid by city officials. When the Byron Carlyle was initially put out to bid, it was meant for a public institution. Miami Beach wanted to attract an educational

institution like FIU or Miami Dade College, or maybe MDC earns prestigious Lumina a culinary outpost of Johnson & Wales— something that would benefit everyone, attract good jobs, and Foundation Education Innovation

included in it would be a theater. Judges Choice Prize

This latest bid however, has the city giving away this valuable asset, and the only requirement is an unspecified "cultural component" with a 10k square foot minimum. As if this weren't enough, one commissioner was pushing to redo the bid and throw in an extra city parking lot on the adjacent street. Heck, once the commission gives away the theater and the parking lot, why not give away the street between them? After all, it's only a street, they will say.

This deal stinks. The city is going to give away millions of dollars in assets with no money up front, and the result will likely be another hotel or building full of micro-units (yes, we are beginning to change zoning and build tons of these across the city) that will offer no real public benefit apart from the 0 Cinema.

Gotten • &wawa.. • Nom. Inpro.m.r.t • Ftmou end Mon

If the Byron Carlyle is developed, it should be something that benefits the public, way beyond one small cultural component. The Byron Carlyle is in the north end, but don't think this doesn't set a dangerous precedent for government -owned properties in the mid and south end too.

I assure you that as your commissioner, I will fight for positive developments that benefit everyone, not just a select few. I want to keep our city properties for you, the residents of Miami Beach.

Your Friend,

Kristen

LB Wallace, Chatt Valley play today for Southeastern District title, JUCO berth

By SENTINEL STAFF

One team had to win a play-in game just to get into the district tournament. Another is attempting to return to the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series after its coach was forced

to resign for health reasons.

The Southeastern District junior college baseball tournament is down to two teams, Lurleen B. Wallace Community College and Chattahoochee Valley Community College. Wallace held off Marion Military Institute in a single-elimination play-in round.

The Saints lost their first-round game to Wallace-Dothan 13-6, but won three straight games to reach today's championship game against Chatt Valley. The Pirates are undefeated in the district, including a 5-4, 10-inning nail biter over Lawson State to reach the title game.

Chatt Valley's affable coach, Adam Thomas, had to step down after 19 years because of blood

clots in his lungs.

Defending JUCO World Series champion Chipola College (Fla.) is one win away from a third straight trip to Grand Junction after a 10-0 rout of State College of Florida to remain undefeated in the Gulf District tournament.

Fourth-ranked Northwest Florida, which eliminated Miami Dade College 5-2, must beat No. 16 Chipola twice today to win the district title.

Navarro College has reached tonight's championship game in the Southern District tournament at Lamar University. The Bulldogs await the winner of today's elimination game between Panola College and Blinn College. Blinn eliminated Angelina College 7-6 on Tuesday night on a misplayed fly ball in the bottom of the ninth that allowed the winning run to score.

Barring weather issues, half of the field will be determined by the end of today, with the final

five districts opening play this week.

Monroe College (NY) won the Eastern District and New Mexico Junior College the Southwestern District earlier this week.

Top-ranked Wabash Valley College (Ill.) is hosting the Northern District starting Friday. Ninth-ranked Iowa Western Community College, Triton College (Ill.) and Rend Lake Community College (Ill.) are in the field.

Perhaps the best matchup of any district tournaments will happen in the East Central starting today, with No. 3 Walters State College (Tenn.) hosting No. 2 Gordon State College (Ga.) in a best-of-three series.

Lamar Community College is the host team in the Western District, playing Central Arizona College on Thursday afternoon, with Trinidad State College facing the College of Southern Nevada in the other first-round game. The championship game is at noon Saturday.

The eight-team Central District tournament opens this morning in Wichita, Kansas, with No. 12 Cowley College and No. 13 Johnson County Community College the top-ranked teams in

the field.

No. 10 Crowder College (Mo.) is hosting the South Central District starting Friday, with Delgado Community College (La.) and No. 19 Connors State.
