NO DECOM JOB TOO... The Port of Cromarty Firth is one of the leading ports in the UK with the laydown space and water depth to accommodate some of the world’s largest structures and vessels.
The Port of Cromarty Firth has the necessary heavy-lifting capability and water depth to accept the largest structures and the latest heavy-lift vessels, including the Pioneering Spirit’s barge, the Iron Lady.
The Port offers an uncluttered wide entrance well-marked by two prominent headlands
Its channel is half a mile wide with water depths ranging from 15m to 26m at chart datum (reaching up to 50m within the Firth)
The Port is well known for its deep sheltered waters which are open all year round
Port of Cromarty Firth offers flexibility with a choice of three berths/quaysides suitable for decommissioning activity, ensuring a quick turnaround:
Berth 4 offers a quayside length of 133m with 14m depth at chart datum
Queens Dock is a sheltered berth with 12m depth at chart datum and a quayside of 150m, enabling underwater work with no impact from currents
Berth 5 (NEW) has a depth of 13.5m at chart datum along the centre, shallowing to 12m at either end of the 154m quayside length
A new 154m quayside with 44,000sqm of laydown space opened in December 2015. It was part-funded with help from Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the European Regional Development Fund.
The Port’s additional capacity has led to it’s inclusion in the recently updated “Decommissioning Action Plan” (Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise). They identify it as one of the main Scottish ports able to carry out decommissioning work.
Laydown areas:
Berth 5 offers a laydown area of 44,000sqm
Berth 4 offers access to a 10,000sqm laydown area
Queens Dock has a laydown area of 26,000sqm
Ground load-bearing of these areas is capable of accommodating some of the largest structures in the North Sea
The Port offers the services of an established, proven, highly-skilled and locally sourced supply chain, capable of handling:
NORM and asbestos decontamination
Hazardous waste management
Dismantling recovery, reuse and recycling
All the necessary lifting capabilities

Unlike other ports, the Port of Cromarty Firth has an “open port” philosophy. This allows oil & gas operators and contractors to use the Port’s decommissioning permits. The Port will ensure that all dismantling activities at the Invergordon Service Base are carried out to the highest standard, with the aim of achieving the highest level (98%) of recovery, reuse or recycling.
This multi-user approach gives customers choice and ensures competition for the best cost outcome. In addition, as a Trust Port, 100% of profits are reinvested in the Port’s future development for the benefit of its stakeholders. This approach ensures you receive excellent infrastructure and facilities that adapt to your needs and contribute towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
OPEN PORT PHILOSOPHY
MOOR UP WITHOUT BEING TIED IN At the Port of Cromarty Firth you’re 100% free to choose the best contractor partners for the job when you bring your next decommissioning project here.

WASTE AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
The John Lawrie Group has been successfully carrying out decommissioning projects involving the dismantling of large oilfield and subsea structures for more than two decades.
Our primary objective is to maximise reuse and recycling, and minimise disposal. To this end, our processing methods result in high recovery and recycling rates for a wide range of materials, in most cases up to 100%.
It’s all about sustainability and, with legislation growing progressively tighter along with the increasing development of zero waste strategies, the need for a smarter approach to decommissioning is unequivocal.
