Test: Laminar Flow simulation with COMSOL Multiphysics on VisCluster, HLRS, Uni Stuttgart, thanks to Dr. Uwe Wössner
01_2013_version_1 / S. 7
First steps in HPC: Commercial CFD software used by Optima pharma
benefit: convenience GUI modeler
drawback: bad scaling, bad mesh, bad convergence, License expenses

Test: Laminar Flow simulation with OpenFOAM on Laki Cluster, HLRS, Uni Stuttgart, thanks to Dr. Uwe Wössner (COVISE visualization) and Bärbel Große-Wöhrmann (setup Laki config)
First steps in HPC: opensource CFD software (will be) used by Optima pharma
benefit: good scaling, good mesh, good convergence, no License expenses
drawback: no GUI modeler

• ooops - HPC available for SME's ??? We think, only research institutes and large companies and defense can make use of it?
• where can we find HPC partners? How does it work and is it affordable for us? One hour calculations on a supercomputer = 1 Mio $ ???
• We are afraid to use HPC, because these alien machines make us weird
• Where can we get knowledge how to handle a supercomputer, where can we get support? What expenses are coming up?
• Can we ruin our company by sending a wrong command to a supercomputer? Crash hardware or software?

Our first questions (bad shots) and requirements as typical SME's

• I was lucky to know some people at HLRS, and felt free to ask them, but others???

First impressions looking up a HPC website
Are we welcome here?
We are medium
size SME.....
hmmm...
we are not sure ?!

• more promotion of HPC access for SME's in media also known by SME's, i.e. "VDI Nachrichten" - not in the "The Journal of Supercomputing"
• promotion by government administration
• consulting on use of opensource software
• guidelines to HPC consultants (academic and commercial)
• specific help on obstacles regarding usage of HPC environment
• more public HPC introduction by seminars and conferences (like PRACE events)
