PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As Term 2 comes to a close we have an opportunity to reflect on a plethora of activities that have taken place this term from the Colour Fun Run, ANZAC Day Service, National Simultaneous Story Time, Pirate Day, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, debating, public speaking, cross country, dance, PSSA, excursion to Kurnell, to the Indigenous incursion. We have embraced these rich learning opportunities for our students but have also been thrilled to have parents and carers on site and engaging in their children’s education. Student reports will be sent home next Thursday, 24 June. Parent-Carer/Teacher/Student interviews will occur in Week 1 of Term 3, Wednesday, 14 July. A three- way conversation enables teachers, students and parents/carers to reflect on progress and set future goals and targets. Research undertaken by John Hattie suggests that the most significant indicator linked to raising student achievement is the ability of students to self-report on their learning. This is also supported by Dylan Williams, he claims students must be able to reflect and articulate if their learning is to be enhanced. A three-way interview promotes student voice, it places the student at the centre of the assessment and reporting process and it strengthens school home partnerships. Prepare your child by using the following prompts: - What have you been learning about? - How do you think you are doing? - How do you know? - How could you improve? - What could you set as your next learning goal? TEACHER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

Aligned with the School Improvement Plan 2021-2024

Semester 1 has seen a focus on building and

nurturing a collaborative learning culture to enhance

teacher quality. There has been an emphasis on

inquiring to understand the present, innovating to

create new ways of improving learning and inspiring

shared responsibility and purposeful engagement in

evidence informed practice. Staff work together in

cycles of co-planning, co-teaching and co-evaluating

to observe and refine practice in order to address an

identified learning need, a pedagogical challenge or

complex learning problem. The process is supported by Spirals of Inquiry supporting teachers to

analyse and reflect, practice analysis conversations and peer coaching.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS

We would like to congratulate the many parents/carers who ensure their children attend school regularly and are therefore benefiting fully from their education. We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education

begin with students coming to school each and every day. If students miss school regularly, they

miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of

school. There is no safe number of days for missing school. Each day a student misses puts them

behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Each missed day is associated with

progressively lower achievement in numeracy, writing and reading.

Attendance patterns are established early. Hence, a child regularly missing days in Kindergarten or in the early years of primary school will often continue to miss classes in the later years. This can impact their academic results when compared to classmates who attend school regularly. It’s vital that students attend school every day, even in the early years of primary school. Being on time daily is also of vital importance as it sets up students for a successful day ahead. When students are a few minutes late they miss out on instructions, routines and do not have the opportunity to build strong friendships and social contacts.

Parents of children from Kindergarten to Year 12 must ensure their children attend school every day. If on occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:

• being sick or having an infectious disease • having an unavoidable medical appointment • being required to attend a recognised religious holiday • exceptional or urgent family circumstances e.g. attending a funeral.

Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unjustified on the student's record.

EXCURSION TO KAMAY BAY KURNELL

On 24 and 31 May, Stage 2 students travelled to Kamay Bay, Kurnell. As part of our history unit this term, students are learning about the original inhabitants of Australia, the early European explorers of Australia and Captain Cook’s landing in Botany Bay in 1770.

At Kamay Bay, students visited the exact landing place of Captain Cook and learnt about his crew’s first interaction with Aboriginal people. Students viewed the stream where Captain Cook took fresh drinking water for the crew of the Endeavour as well as the monument to Sir Joseph Banks, the botanist after whom the city of Bankstown was named.

Students completed a bush tucker trail walk through Australian native bushlands and learnt about the different plants that were eaten and used for medical purposes by Aboriginal people. Students also learnt about how Aboriginal people survived in their environment and the tools they made to gather food and water.

The students thoroughly enjoyed exploring the Kamay Bay site and participating in this exciting and informative excursion.

4W DEVELOPING THEIR MULTIPLICATIVE THINKING

Students in 4W have been developing their multiplicative thinking. They have been working to develop strategies such as doubling, halving, halving plus one more group and using known facts to assist them in determining unknown multiplication facts. To further extend their thinking, students have been playing a game called Multiplication Toss. This game requires students to use the abovenamed strategies, as well as partition multiplication questions to create a block that will fit on their game board. This is a fun game to play at home with your child / children.

MULTIPLICATION TOSS You will need: A spinner. 1 paperclip A 10 x 10 grid piece of paper. GAME INSTRUCTIONS

• Players take turns to spin the spinner.

• Each player may only have 10 turns each.

• Each player spins twice. If a 3 and 6 are spun, players can draw a block representing 3 rows of 6 (3 sixes) or 6 rows of 3 (6 threes).

• The game continues with no overlapping areas.

• If you cannot go, you must still record your go on a piece of paper and write “cannot go”.

• The winner is the player with the largest area blocked out after their 10 turns.

• Eventually the space left on the grid paper becomes small.

• Students need to think:

- What if my 3 sixes won’t fit as 3 sixes or 6 threes?

- Players can then partition the multiplication. For example, I can rename 3 sixes as 2 sixes and

1 six (if it helps me to fit the block into my game board).

Since the successful handover of our new uniforms being provided by MUE, all issues regarding stock need to be directly raised with MUE as the P&C have officially completed their part in this process. Moving forward MUE have asked parents who may be waiting on stock, to leave their name and number with them directly. They will contact you when the items become available. Also please be aware COVID-19 has impacted supply lines worldwide. This is a constant issue that MUE are aware of and are trying to rectify. Please be patient, needless to say that COVID-19 implications are still being felt across multiple industries. Panania Public School P&C Clothing Pool In light of the above, the Panania Public School P&C Uniform Shop has been officially renamed. We are now the P&C Clothing Pool. This is a great service for our school community, as it benefits parents and helps fundraise for the P&C. The clothing pool is located in A block Hall. Opening Days: The Clothing Pool will be open between 8.50am -9.50am on the dates below: Term 2 Friday, 25 June Term 3 Friday, 16 July Friday, 6 August Friday, 27 August Friday, 17 September (social distancing rules apply) The clothing pool is a great place where families can purchase pre-loved good quality school uniforms and brand new school bags (old style) at the discounted price of only $13.75. All other clothing pool items are reasonably priced at $2 or $5 per item. We have cash or EFTPOS facilities on hand with no minimum purchase. DONATE NOW! If your child has outgrown his/her school uniform, you may like to donate any good quality items to the Clothing Pool. You will be helping raise important funds for the school. We appreciate all donations made. Items can be dropped off at the office during school hours. Thank you for your continued support of the P&C Clothing Pool.

Thank you to the Panania Community who supported our Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday, 3 June. A wonderful $1,780 was raised for the Cancer Council which goes towards vital cancer research, support services, prevention programs, and advocacy.

Pirate Day was another great success with many activities organised by our SRC students to raise funds for childhood brain cancer. An amazing $1,445 was raised on the day. Congratulations to the Panania PS community for raising an amazing amount for the above worthwhile charities.

STEWART HOUSE DONATION DRIVE Thank you to all the Panania PS

families who donated to this worthy cause. We raised $190 for Stewart

House.

All funds raised go towards operating the Stewart House

program.

The winner of the $4,000 travel voucher was a lucky student from

Bathurst Public School.

THE FATHERING PROJECT Dear Fathers and Father figures, On behalf of the Fathering Project, you and your children are invited to our Board Games and Books on Thursday, 24 June from 5.00pm – 6.00pm in the School Library. We will be looking at different games and books that you can play and read with your kids over the holidays with minimal resources!
