Basketball Hoop upgrade
Greenwich PS students have been focussing on their health and well-being with daily physical activity as part of
the Premier’s Sporting Challenge. To help get students moving and playing team games, we have upgraded the
basketball hoops and backboards using some of the grant associated with this program. They have already proved
very popular!

Disco Fever – Saturday 22 August
I am looking forward to seeing all the fancy dance moves at
the School Disco this Saturday. Don’t forget to get your tickets
on flexischools and dress up as something beginning with G,P or S!
Greenwich Hospital Request
We have been contacted by Greenwich Hospital to raise awareness about parking issues and student and patient
safety. Please do not park in the grounds of the hospital as unfortunately hospital staff members have been
‘parked in’ and have been unable to leave at the end of their shift. Also, students have been walking through the
hospital grounds as a short cut, which raises safety concerns for both the students and patients. Please be
considerate of this request.
Head Lice, Sickness and Personal Hygiene
Illnesses at school at the moment include coughs, colds, flus and a vomiting bug. Please keep your children at
home if they are unwell as not only are they unable to learn but other children’s learning can be impacted if the
illnesses spread. We have reminded children about good handwashing habits after toileting and before eating and
coughing into their elbow etc to try to reduce the spread of disease. Hand sanitiser is available in all classrooms. It
would be appreciated if you could also reinforce these messages with your children. Thank you.
Head lice are active at the moment so please check your child’s hair and treat appropriately. Don’t forget the bed
linen!
Road Safety Colouring Competition – Lane Cove Council
Lane Cove Council is conducting a Road Safety poster competition for all students K-6 in the area. A flyer can be
found elsewhere in this newsletter. The poster must be completed on the official entry form available at both
offices and is due at Lane Cove Council by 23 October. Posters must be completed using pencils, pens, crayons,
paints, pastels etc but no clip art or photographs are allowed.
A Beautiful View
Outside my office window I get to enjoy the flowering port wine magnolia. This
lovely tree offers a stunning entry into our school administration building.
Enjoy it for the short time that this tree is in flower.

TEN CYBERSAFETY TIPS EVERY PARENT SHOULD KNOW
Keeping your kids safe online is easy with a few simple precautions.
1. Nothing replaces parental supervision and education for kids about cybersafety.
2. Set a technology curfew.
3. Remind your child to never give out identifying information such as your home address, school name or telephone number in a public message such as chat or newsgroups.
4. If your child posts photos online, use privacy settings to limit access to people they know well.
5. Remind your child that people don't always tell the truth online, and they can't take anything at face value.
6. Reassure your child that they can tell you anything, without fear of losing the laptop or internet access.
7. If they get a message or email that's threatening or rude, they should 'STOP, BLOCK, TELL'. First step is to tell your child to stop responding to the abuse and then block those people sending threatening or rude messages if they continue. Let your child know that if they are being bullied, or know someone else who is, they should tell a trusted adult.
8. Never click on any links that are contained in emails from people they don't know. As well as sexual content, they could contain a computer virus.
9. If you suspect your child has been contacted by a predator, try to save a copy of the chat log (or whatever form the contact takes) for evidence. Call Crime Stoppers 24-hour line 1800 333 000 to make a formal complaint.
10. Your child will be using computers and the technology for the rest of their lives – you're in the great position of being able to get them off to a safe, positive start.

FROM THE OFFICE
Online Payments
Thank you to everyone who trialled our new on-line system through the school website. However, there is a
glitch. The letter explaining how to use it said that information needed to be put into the ‘Ref. or Invoice Number’
field but an error message is displayed. Please do not put any information in there but go to the end ‘Payment
Options’, Excursions and enter the information from the Term 3 fees there.
Hopefully this doesn’t put you off using the system as from the Office point of view it works really well. Thanks for
your co-operation.

PERFORMING ARTS NEWS
Ryde Eisteddfod 2015
Our Greenwich Primary String Ensemble competed in the Ryde Eisteddfod last Thursday 13 August.
13 of our Yr2 - 6 students, combined their talents at the violin and cello to perform 2 wonderful songs: “Alouette”, a French folk song and “Eidelweiss”, a memorable tune from the Sound of Music.
Our conductor, Anita Crawford, was very pleased with how well our students performed. Their hard work in school rehearsals, practice at home and a lead-up performance at the K/1 site shone through. They received a complimentary report from the competition adjudicator, who particularly liked their tone.
There were many schools competing and the competition was fierce. Our students enjoyed the experience, despite some logistical difficulties… and they were wowed by some of the more experienced performing groups.
A big thank you to Anita for all the work she put in to get our Ensemble ready and to our school and parents for supporting these efforts.

P&C NEWS School Disco - Saturday 22 August Only 3 more sleeps until the School Disco!! See the attached flyer & order form for details about the night and
ordering information. Children can come dressed as anything beginning with G, P or S! Just a reminder that this is
a "kiss & drop" event although K-2 parents are most welcome to stay if their child is a little bit shy, however we
request that no siblings are brought along & parents who stay must remain inside the hall. Please also remind
your child that they are not to leave the hall during the disco, this is for supervision & child protection purposes.
Once each disco session has concluded, students will be kept inside the hall until they are collected by a parent.
Please, please, please book your tickets as soon as possible so we can make sure that there are enough treat bags
for everyone on the night!! We also need some more parent helpers for the Yr 3 - 6 disco session. If you're able to
stay & help please email [email protected]. Many thanks!
Commonwealth Bank School Banking Update – Please Read
Concerns have been raised regarding the ‘Cosmic Light Beam Torch’ reward item due to the inclusion of four
button batteries that can be accessed by unscrewing the back of the torch.
Whilst this reward has been independently tested and deemed to meet relevant product standards the
Commonwealth Bank have made the decision to proactively withdraw this item from the School Banking Rewards
Program.
Parents/Guardians are requested to dispose of any ‘Cosmic Light Beam Torches’ their child may have already
received as part of the Rewards Program. Students who have previously received a ‘Cosmic Light Beam Torch’ are
welcome to redeem an alternative reward item.
